DM-- very cute!!
Well, my big news.... I lost my favorite piercing. My vert tragus is no more! I wompedit pretty good about 3 weeks after having it done. It started growing out after that. I took it out 3 days ago. the next morning I was cleaning it and the rest of the skin ripped off. So, it would have ripped out in a matter of days :(
No my bigger news... At this very moment my firsttatis being drawn up!!! I took it to a guy on Friday. Dh and are getting tats that are a set but not matching. This guy is really good. He not only tatted the rapper Xzibit, he did the lead singer of Bush AND Eddie Munster!
The whole shop he is at is awesome! Everyone there is so talented. He is giving us a deal on the tats. Both for 350. I'mexcited! Plus, I talked to him about my whole back piece and he is excited about that too! I explainedto himwhatI wanted on the phone with my trinity. He seemed remotely interested UNTIL Ishowed him whatI had drawn up myself. He is basically doing colors and style changes. The design remains the same. For those who looked at the links I gave... I combined a couple tog etthe desired look. I can't wait to post pics!!!

Did that hurt?? It seems like it would.
What does a tat feel like? I want to prepare myself.

tickles - buzzing numbness - different for different people and different parts of the body. My husband's was inside his upper arm and after he had it done the artist said, "Man, I have never seen someone sit so still to have that done [there]. Most people cry and scream." And my dh replied, "Geeze, I thought I was being a baby so I just sucked it up." Tough guy...

I always think it feels REALLY hot--like someone scratching at me with a bad sunburn--only worse. Different parts hurt differently. Shoulder blades were ok. Kidneys and love handles nearly made me cry.
And the first jolt of pain is not how if feels the whole way through...don't panic. Your body starts to cope after a few minutes.
Make sure you eat beforehand and have something to sip on. Keep your blood sugar up, so you don't pass out or feel woozy.

art4babies-- thanks for making me feel confident :D
Thanks for the advice monkey. I figure I've lived through and recovered from 2 c/bs. I haven't met pain like that yet. I also typically have a high tolerance to pain. We'll see how it goes!

DM pretty fairy! I love her hair :D
Megan, to me, it feels like someone taking a thumbtack and scraping it across your skin, VERY hard, repeatively. It is painful, but its more annoying unless you hit a sensitive spot (for me shoulder blades were a piece of cake, for others big ow, so who knows!)
art4babies, when I had the inside of my arm done (armband) the guy doing it was like: "Doesn't it hurt?? You're brave!" LOL! It wasn't the tattooing that hurt, it was my arm brusing and being swollen after that SUCKED (that also happened on my Orion piece where it comes into the underside in *solid* color). Dh got a tattoo at the same time as my armband (mine is hieroglyphics of Dh's name, his is my name in binary... got done a month before I got pregnant with Orion), and we both kept ice packs under our arms for a few days after!
And man I am itching for a new tattoo!! Since I have no $ to put towards them I have to live vicariously though all of you guys and just keep working on ideas! I think I get like 5 ideas for every 1 tattoo I eventually get! LOL!

lip didnt hurt at all, seriously. i didnt even know he had started.
but armband hurt like ...well it hurt alot. upper arm not at all, near the shin bone hurt quiet alot. my friend got his ribs done and we had to hold him down to keep him from knocking out the artist. everybodies body is different and will hurt differently. \
good luck.

We are getting a deal on getting ours done together. It'll be intersting!
We live with my parents right now and they are totally opposed to them, except my mom wants dad to get one. :shrug
Anyway, we'll have to hide them for who knows how long. I'm sure someday they'll see them. Dh is planning on keeping his secret for forever. I just don't see it happening...
No one has noticed my web piercing yet. I'm surprised since I've gotten lazy about hiding it.
I can't wait to get my tat done. Today we were mall rats and walking around...I have a hankering for a new piercing. I want my chest pierced, where the breast comes away from teh body on each side. NOt a surface piercing but actually through the tissue...make sense?

Hmm, been a while!
I finally had the spare cash to order a bigger bead for my lip stud :D I like it a lot. It shows up much better. I'm still itching to pierce something new tho. Maybe a traditional labret, right below my lip stud. I pressed a bead there till it stuck :LOL and it looked pretty good. Still thinking about a nostril stud too. I won't do both, though, I don't want my face to look "cluttered".
Also set a goal time for my first tat! Right now I'm working on growing my hair out. My first goal is waist, which I expect to reach in November, and I'll celebrate by dying my hair fuschia. My big goal, though, is tailbone. I'll probably reach that next July or August. At which point I'll reward myself for my patience by getting the small of my back inked! Still working on the design (a sprig of 3 leaves in black & grayscale). I love the idea of my very own tat peeking out from between the strands of my hair.
OK, question time. I'm going to have oral surgery soon. I wouldn't be surprised if they insist I remove my lip barbell. I don't want to leave the hole open because I paid $60 and went through the nerves before the piercing, the actual procedure and 2 days of really annoying swelling & soreness afterwards to have that piercing, I'm not going to risk having it close on me! Anyone know how much those clear plastic retaining "bones" are? I'm just a 16gauge. Thanks!
StarMama
09-27-2004, 07:24 PM
Kristin, cool goal with the hair!! Mine is just past "classic length" (it just barely hits the back of my thighs)... I wish I could dye it though!! My hair doesn't do well with dye and being long...
I like the idea of getting a labret with your lip stud! I think the line the piercings would make would look neat! Maybe I'm biased because I REALLY want a labret piercing! :LOL
I don't know about any clear retaining "bones", but if they are bones like they have nose studs they are BAD for your piercing!! The ones I'm talking about are the ones shaped, well sorta like a bone! With a ball at each end, non removable. Shoving them through your piercing can tear up tissue...
its_our_family
09-27-2004, 09:46 PM
I think the clear studs are cheap. They are plastic and have removeable ends. I saw a gal putting onein her tongue. So, I know they have them all sizes.
Well, tentatively my first tat happens on FRIDAY!!!! I have to call and confirm time and such. He has had the design and hopefully will have it drawn up by friday. Dh will get his done that day too :)
I'm nervous about what it will feel like. I'm excited too! I hope it isn't bad because I'm so excited baout my future tats that I don't wantto fear getting them. kwim?
They are all my design as well....exciting!!!

OK...........more tattoo questions from a newbie to this "body decorating" thing......................
I'm wanting to get a tat on the spot just above where my thigh meets my body ~ hip bone area, I guess. Not too large, maybe the size of when your middle finger makes a circle with your thumb. Anyone have a tattoo in this area? I'm just assuming it's going to hurt *a lot* because it's in the area of a bone. Am I right?
Also, I'm nursing a toddler ~ are there any risks (infection wise) that would make this a bad time to get it done?

Oh Megan it won't be so bad you'll see :D I don't think I've EVER heard of anyone who's gotten one tattoo and it hurt so much to them they didn't go back for more! Its really not so horrible ;) I remember my best friend getting her first tattoo (we were supposed to get matching ones, I got mine first and she chickened out of the one we were SUPPOSED to get and got a tiny itty bitty one instead) and she was SO freaked out. But she's got 2 more now and more plans! Awesome about friday!! You must be excited/nervous! It'll be great :) You dealt with 2 c-secs and say you have a high pain threshold, you'll do great!
China White, the risks would be if you contracted Hep B, you could give it to your babe. Or if you had a bad infection it could be passed on. But if you pick a shop carefully, and take care of your new tattoo, it really is such a *remote* possibility.

my 2 cents on the pain factor with tats...
its_our_family...I have a fairly big yin-yang symbol with 2 dolphins around it on the back of my shoulder and it really wasn't very painful. Really, the only time it started to hurt was from all the shading on the black side of the yin-yang--started to get sore and that's when I was having that thumbtack dragging feeling that Lisa described. In hind sight, I now know the artist wasn't that great though (this was 12 years ago) so that could have contributed to the pain. My dh fell asleep while he was getting the back of his shoulder done--seriously, the tattoo artist had to keep bumping him to keep him awake. :D I'm sure you'll have no trouble.
China...my first tat was right about where you are describing--sort of low bikini line. It did not hurt at all really. My problem with it was that that is a very ticklish spot for me and with the vibration of the gun, it was hard to stay still. I will say though that had I known then what a pregnancy would do to that tat, I would not have gotten it there. It is my dh's name and with my first pregnancy, I earned stretch marks right through it so you can't really tell what it says anymore. Which is really okay because he's the only one that sees it and he knows what it says :love
you guys are making me exceedingly envious of the work you are getting done! I've been dying for new ink, but we just don't have the $ right now. Still debating the belly piercing....

China, I have one in the spot I think you'r describing. It did hurt more than my arm one, but the "worst" part (as one mom mentioned) was the tickiling from the vibrating gun. It was by no means unbearable. Also--A good artist will check with you to see if you need a break or anything.

Um... I would be wary of any artist that wants to tattoo over your scar tissue.
Scar tissue is so unpredictable, when going in, you dont know whether it will turn out fine, blow out or bleed under.
Most scar tissue wont even hold ink at all...
I try to avoid it at all costs.

It looks like it is really going to happen!!!
Yeah, I wanteda tat abovemy c/b scar. I have enormous stretchmarks and suich so I can't get it tatted. I'm plan a tummy tuck in the next fews year but the makrs will still be there since they go up to just under my breasts.
Which raises the question. Will I be ableto get the tat on my breast I want. I have strtchmarks there too. I gues it would have to be more on my chest and less on my breast.

Hi! I have some tattoos and piercings, too. I have one professional tattoo on my back of a crescent moon and a shooting star, one homemade one on my hand of a lady bug, one homemade one on my thigh of the letter T, and another homemade one on my ankle of another crescent moon.
I used to have my nose and labret pierced too, but now I just have my tongue.
Does anyone else gague their ears? My left ear is at a 4 gague and as soon as I can afford to I'm going lower to a 00 or so.

Now it feels kinda like a sunburn. Its just kinda stiff and buns a bit when I move.
He drew the first line and said he'd stop so I could get a feel for it. He said that would probably be the worst since I didn't know what to expect. He lied! :LOL He told dh the same thing (he went after me) and I told dh not to believe a word he said. Sean, the tattoo guy, was like..Hey your abnormal:D He was a hoot, kinda weird but funny. He was listening to Halloweenmusic to celebrate the 1st if October :eyesroll
Anyway, the black outline was no big deal. It kinda pulled in places but felt good in others. The coloring he used a different type of needle. There were more needles spread out wider. He said it would feel different and most said it was better than the black. Again, he lied! That was the worst part. It took very very little time but it hurt like heck! A friend of ours went with us and he has 3 tats, pretty big ones, and he had never had that type of needle used.
The weird thing was thta as soon as he moved the needle the pain was instantly gone! He took one break inbetween the black and color to reset. I was his first tat of the day so he was a tad scattered, which appears to be normal for him. That break was about 10 minutes then I took a break during the color for about 3 or 4 minutes.
How was it compared to how I anticipated? I can't really say. I didn't have a lot of expectations. I think it was about how I thought it would feel.
The other guy in the shop is named Jamie Edwards. He was featured in Tattoo Mag in March of 2003. The article is called riding the tornado. His work is really good. They call him the portrai king! I think I might go with him for my back work.
I'm already trying to decide what to get next. I want something on my left shoulder.arm...where the 2 meet. But I don't know of what.
Its as addicting as the piercing... I'm rady for another one and this one hasn't even healed!

Yayyyyyy Megan! :bgbounce That is very pretty. It's so great you sound so thrilled with it! It makes me excited to get my own.
So talk about the specific sensations here. Particularly the outline, since my design doesn't have any color. Tingly? Stingy? Burning? Pricking? How long did it take to complete that outline? Spill, spill! :D
its_our_family
10-02-2004, 03:38 PM
To me the outline felt like cat scratches. I think that is the best thing I've expereinced before that I can compare it to. SOmeone said a scratching tack. That was close but I'd say cat scratches.
The good thing was that as soon as the needle was pulled away there was no more pain!
I can still feel that same feeling in some places today. I describe today as feeling like a sunburn.
Gotta run...baby hungry :D
StarMama
10-02-2004, 05:31 PM
Yeah Megan, usually it is the outline that hurts the worst (for me, and for others who's experiences I've read or talked to in person) because the single needle for some reason feels "sharper" than the multiple shader needles... It holds true for me, and when he artist did the shading for my armpiece he used a 15needle configuration! :eek And I've seen a photo of someone getting a sea scene done on their *ENTIRE* back, and they were shading the ocean with one that had 50!! at once!
I've had other tattoos colored in with the single needle too, and I really think (at least personally and with Dh's one tattoo done only with one needle) the color isn't as even and seems "spotty" sometimes... (his needs a touchup badly).
The scratching tack anology I think fits in more for the fill (for me)... but guess you felt it differently ;)
its_our_family
10-02-2004, 07:58 PM
The shading was the most painfl for me. It felt like someone was putting a needle under my skin and pulling it out weird...which is what it was :LOL
I can't wait for my next one! It was definetely bearable and you forget the pain after you see it done... just like childbirth!

Its a shoulder peice, of my daughter with fairy wings, and her name in cursive... that hurt.. 2 sessions.. total 5 hrs! I will learn how to post a pic of it.. its beatiful blue and purple. My DH just got a cover up.. (his ex wifes name), that was last tax season.. So it is my turn next (we decided to alternate since it is so $$$). As for peircings.. I have my ear "nub" done. I found the sign at the shop we wentto. Their shop rateis 100 per hour 60 minimum. ur friendJeffwentwith us. He has 3 tats by 3different artists. He said his next tat is done by the guy who did ours.
The couple things I like about the shop we went tois:
1. It used to be a dentist ora dr's office. So, it has the indiidual rooms for each artist, not just a booth. So, its a lot moer private than an open room.
2. They have signs all over the place that say things about ..if you see this/or dont' see this at anther shop rethink where you are" "Make sure you see a portfolio before you get work done. If they don't have one maybe you should rethink where you are" NOthing says "come here instead" but it says what you shouldsee and shouldn't see in a reputable shop.
3. They have a female piercer. So, I'll have somewhereto go to get a VCH :D
Anyway, I can't wait to go back!

I just saw your new tat... thats very nice.. Im trying to find the page that has my tat on it.. to show you all. I think my next one will wait until we have another baby (hopefully soon), so that I can get something done with the baby's name. I don't know what.. But I figure i have a whole shoulder to work with :) For me the shading hurt the worst. But I don't know if that is because I did it in 2 sessions? I had the outlining done, and started going into shock after a little over 2 hrs. Then I went back a couple weeks later for the coloring, and went into shock after just over a couple hours again. I was going to have more lighter tones put in.. BUT... I decided not too cause the pain was getting far too intense for me. If i can ever find the guy who did it.. I may go in again since it has been a year and the pain isnt soooo fresh! LOL.

Hey thanks for both compliments!!
:bawl No I don't have my baby girl anymore. I sold her this spring. For a couple different reasons. She wasnt so practical anymore with my growing family. And when we moved on base, I didnt have any place to store her. I sold her to some dudes that I could tell where very mechanical and very into nice rides (yes I researched before i sold her..LOL)... they got a good deal. 2500$. She did have some minor problems I never got around to fixing, due to lack of knowledge and lack of funds (Im no tranny expert).
:love On the bright side, my husband said once we get things in order $$$ wise, and get our new orders and get settled in.. I can start building another one. I want to buy my ex's pick up, which is almost the same as my old one. But then I want to build a Jeep also.. LOL Maybe a streetrod... Who knows..! I will definately keep a "blog" of my journey tho :)
Ohh yeah.. as for my tat.. the orriginal design came out of the "Good Fairy/Bad Fairy" book... it just happened that the "Fairy of Pure Joy" was an exact match to my daughter.. all the way to the fat rolls!!

I already have my left nostril, which I wear a hoop in and my labret is already done too so I thought if I got my lip done and wore a hoop in that it would be pretty funky! I think that's the last thing I would do on my face though.... I think :eyesroll
Anyway I say go for it! Do both... I wish I could post a picture of myself so you could get a preview of what you might look like minus the lip :wink I don't have a scanner or digital cam though... bummer.
To everyone else!!
I've been away for a bit so I wanted to say hi and it looks like I have lots of cool pictures to catch up on. Hope you've all been well :D

Im so excited, I go at 5 to get my back finished, we should be done by 9 and home by 10... Ill post a pic tonight! :D
Most tattoo artists wont tell you this kind of stuff, but I just personaly don't like the "secret society" feel of traditional tattooing. I believe that an informed customer is a good customer!
i can't wait to see it!!!
My artist answered every question I had. I watched what I could watch. It was on my shoulder blade so I only saw the one corneer. I asked about the needles and how they worked and everything. He chucked and said I sounded like him when he got his first tat.
Mine is almost healed. The sab is about 75-85% gone. It is itching so I'm glad the scab is finally falling away! I was afraid of color when I went to get it done. I'm thinking the color of mine is a robin egg blue and a little darker for shading. I told dh now I wished it had been a brighter blue! My next one will be all black but tis just going to be one word on my shoulder...where the shoulder and arm meet... but I'm ot ure what word...and maybe I'll get a color! I'm already iching for my next one and I only had mine done 6 days ago. By about day 3 I was ready for another! I can't even remember the pain!
Did I mention i was a bleeder. I took a break o look at it and it was red. I said, I thought it was going to be blue? He chuckled again and said, Thats your blood. Oh, yuck! It seeped for aabout 24 hours...

I didn't know that about type O blood. Yup I'm O+.
I love the back piece! Which part is new?? I can't tell by the photo.
Apprenticing!! That is so awesome! I don't know how tattooists do it. I would love to body pierce though. Dh and I have talked about it but not sure if I ever will. I would have to have tons of practice getting the jewelry in. I thikn its lack of proper tools. I can't even get my own in!

Hey speaking of ITCHY tatoos and healing times.. Have any of you used "Tatoo Goo"?? I used it on my shoulder peice after both sessions.. and it made it SOO less itchy, and it didnt scab nearly as bad or puffy! After my tat was healed I used it for my face.. It felt good.. didnt break me out.. or leave my skin irritated as most lotions do! I LOVED this stuff! One tube was more than enough to heal my tat after both sessions and keep my face smooth for about a month! I think it was 10$ or something!

I haven't had a real problem with itching...luckily! I've been ok with just lotion. I hear the goo is good :D

IOF your tattoo is BEAUTIFUL! I love the lettering. I can't wait to see a picture of it completely healed.
I havn't been comming to this thread lately because I'm DYING for some new ink and I just can't justify it right now :crying I keep seeing my artist around town and he keeps asking when I'm comming in. He's excited about the gears and vines idea. I am too - I can completely visualize it around my wrist.
Andrea, your back piece is amazing! After my wrist, I want to start on my back. I want to cover it in fairies.

Hi, I don't think I've posted here before..
My name is Iris and I'm common law married to a Tattoo Artist..he's been in the tattoo industry for about 8 yrs now...I met him getting a tattoo..which by the way he didn't do..and I only have 3 tattoos..and a nose peircing..which I've peirced about 4x now..diamonds keep falling out..as soon as I take it out it closes..anyways..I'm itching for another tattoo but DH insists I wait..I peirced my cartilage about 3x..and always either got infected..done with a percing gun :eyesroll ..Haven't tried it again..
I had to remove my tongue ring a coule of yrs ago..I kept chipping my teeth..a total of 6 have chipped..the two front ones arent really noticeable..since they chipped towards the inside..and swallowed two studs too..so I gave it up!
I still haven't got my two kids names...but soon will :exclaim

I am hoping someone in this tribe can answer my question. My baby is due in March 2005 :bgbounce and I am eager to be a successful breastfeeding mom. I have both my nipples pierced. I have had the piercings for around a year, they are healed very well, and I love them. Can anyone give me adivce on breastfeeding and keeping my piercings. The jewelry I have now is the standard ring with the suspended ball. I am assuming the jewelry will have to be changed because it seems the balls could be a choking hazard, but I was wondering what the best removable jewelry would be. Anyone who has experience breastfeeding and keeping their piercings I would greatly appreciate your reply. So far, Everywhere I have looked people are either totally without an answer for me or they have let their piercings heal back up. There has to be someone out there who like I hope to nursed and kept their piercings!!! HELP!!!! :1praying:

Hey all!
I've had my nose pierced 3x...first time with a gun (stupid, stupid!!) and it got infected so I took it out. Second time with a needle on the other side b/c of scarring, which fell out and closed. Third time lucky...
DYING for a tat for years on the small of my back, but didn't b/c of 'epidural fears' (in my much younger days)

Thanks for the advice re: hip area. Unfortunately, my husband (who is opposed to this idea entirely) has asked me if I would..............refrain from putting it on the front of my body :irked: The area I wanted it on (hip/groin region) is my husbands favorite part of a womans body (TMI, I know :eyesroll ) and he likes it just the way it is.
My personal thought is it would make the area that much more attractive, but................:shrug
We have gone over & over, this and while he knows it's my body to do with what I wish, I have *grudingly* agreed to change the location. Now, I'm trying to decide between the small of my back, or my neck , which would be covered by my hair unless I decide to put my hair up. I'm OK with this, but I'm thinking the neck would really hurt, due to the proximity of the bones to the surface of the skin.
Anyone else out there have a tattoo on the back of their neck? did it hurt like he!!? Oh, and to the mama who said it's possible to contract Hep B, how likely is this? What things do I need to watch for in regards to safe practices? This shop (the only one in town, I might add...........) makes their own needles, autoclaves them first, and then disposes of them after one use. Does this sound about right?
Thanks in advance for your advice ~ you guys are terrific!! :thumb

maya :) There are so many unknowns when its comes to the bodies of women!
I told dh I was thinking about sleeves and eh said he would rather I didn't. I probably won't. I want my tats to be something that can be completely concealed or shown off. Dh is thinking about going back into ministry and it may be harder to find a job with a tatted wife! They can't say much if they can't see them. Not to mention I can keep them covered and not hear whining from my mom... am I an adult?? Its hardto tell from that post :wink
I had talked abotu getting one word done on the top of my arm/shoulder. I want the color to be such a dark purple it is almost black but def purple. I'm thinking of the words
Beautiful
Journey
I AM
one of those.
I saw "Beautiful" on a low back tat on bmezine.com ( http://www.molokosynthemesc.com/search/srch2004.exe?pic=tattoo/A40810/high/dsc000101.jpg&tsect=tattoo/let001.html&desc=Beautiful+tattoo%3Cbr%3E%3Cfont+size%3D-1%3E)
I thought it was awesome... other than that I can't find a word I like... I'm thinking of making my back piece my life story (so far) and have the tats I have be ones that have meaning and not just cause I like that tat (cause there are some I like but they don't seem to fit me). I already have the names of the boys. I like the music flowing idea that I shared before because music has always been and will always be. Its like a center theme with me...hence down my back and such. The song I'mgoing to have in the tat is the old hymn "It Is Well"

Think of drawing on a balloon. Then, inflate the balloon.
This is what will happpen to any tattoos on any area that will grow significantly during pregnancy. Some will shrink back to normal, some never will.
If you happen to get a stretch mark through a tattoo, it will really mess it up.
I would advise on waiting until you are done having kids before you tattoo the area.

hey, i havent posted here before, but i can offer some help.
that sounds just like what happened to me, a keloid. there really is nothing you can do about it. you can try what my piercer suggests, a paste of asprin and water put over the keloid, let it sit for 5 min and then gently rise away.
the theory is this. a keloid is a scar, built up from irratation. the irratant is the jewelry. sometimes you can eat away at the scar with the asprin paste, but speaking from experience...it doesnt always work. for me, it did not despite persistance. you might have to resign to the fact that you are one of many people unable to wear jewelry in your nostril.
i tried not to sugar coat this, because that is the response i got from a lot of very pierced friends who were sure it would go away on its own, in good time, with a little help, etc. in the end i just had to suck it up and take it out :irked: i think mine keloided because i always slept on my stomach, and the pressure from sleeping on the fresh peircing caused it to go awry.
btw, i have 2 tattoos on my inner left forearm, both stars, hard to describe, but tribal-esque. i have had my piercings, but still have 9/16th in lobes and 10ga behind that. wow, it seems like so little when i put it in writing lol

Hey there, mind if I totally barge in and announce myself?! I totally happened on this thread by luck, I wouldn't have ever thought of looking for other tattooed mamas!!
My name is Julie, I have a 2yr old son named Connor and a daughter named Justice that will be one on Saturday!
As far as tats, I have a really big indian tribal on my lower back, needs A LOT of work. It's got about 4 1/2+ hours in it, and only cost me $90. After two babies and 7 years, it looks like I got what I paid for, LOL! I also have a fairy on my right shoulderblade, she's a silhouette but has color in her butterfly wings. I had another fairy picked out for the other shoulder but she's pretty plain and I think when I take the plunge I'm going to get my bluebell instead. Once upon a time I had that Fairy book, I don't remember what it's called, anyway - it's like an encyclopedia of fairies and stuff, with awesome art. One of them was bluebell, and she's gorgeous but I thought it might be too much detail to capture well. Turns out you only need a good artist! Anyhow, once I have that done then I'll have my 'wings' and I have an intricate celtic knot design selected that I want to put the kid's initials inside. I'm planning for the center of my back, not right between the shoulder blades, but just a bit lower - my tribal is pretty big but I think it will fit. The knot and the tribal were both just flash - no real originality there, but I like them!
I have no idea what the tribal means or if it's just a cool design. I've decided that it means luck in love, because I got it before I met my dh, and he has the same tattoo in a smaller version on his calf!!
Piercings - I have 6 regular piercings in my left ear, one in the right. No stretched holes or conch (is that what it's referred to as, the little part inside your ear by your cheek?) I always joke that I have to have one side of my head that I can do stuff with, like sleep and talk on the phone! I have designs for at least two more holes on that left ear, totally fill it up all the way around. I have my tongue pierced and have had it for 7 yrs, I just love it! It's just for me and whenever my stupid barbell breaks I feel naked as I race to the nearest inkstore to get a replacement! I had my navel pierced but took it out for babies, and now my poor tummy is like a roadmap and I'll never willingly show it to anyone, piercing artist or no!! I've never been willing to visibly pierce my face, although if I did I'd go for a little labret stud, maybe one day when I can figure out how to get out of this mainstream profession!!
So that's me - I'm off to lose myself in your other 28 pages of posting! I thought I had better introduce myself before I got lost in the other posts!!
I also wanted to ask a question, I'm still BF my daughter several times a day (actually usually in the evening and all night!) and I'd really love to start getting my tribal piece fixed. What are your views on tats while BF? Should I wait until we're totally weaned, or could I go ahead and find a good artist to do my other stuff? My tribal is the biggest thing, it needs to be totally reworked, and then some of the spikey parts need to be lengthened in certain spots to help balance it back out - I dunno if the guy did it crooked or if I've stretched it funny, LOL! But I hate it right now, and it used to be my favorite thing!
Thanks for any advice, I look forward to hanging around here if you'll have me!!

I'm prone to keloids and hypertrophic scars. It sucks. If you are bfing it supposedly increases the chances. You should see the keloid under my tongue from my web...its really gross!
Dh should find out about his job this week. If he gets it I'm getting my next tat...still don't know about location :splat I just can't decide!

Hi magentamamma-- We meet again :) (dyed black tribe)
I'm relly hoping dh gets this job...not only because he needs a job but because I get my next tat. I'm still not sure where but I was thinking on the front of my shoulder almost chest but not chest. Not sure if I'll get "I AM" or a symbol of some kind.
Dh has decided on a pheonix as a whole back tat. He is pretty excited.
I've also decided not to get anything else pierced till B weans. I seem to develop keloids and scars super easy and I wonder if it is causing the problem :(
So, as a celebration the next thing I get pierced is my nips!!

:LOL thanks for that link!
I do like the way it looks but I've never had any real desire to get my nipples pierced but I have joked to my sis (who does want hers pierced) that if I did it would be so that I could hook chains from them to my ears so they would sit more like they did before 10 years of pregnancy weight gain and breastfeeding....kinda like suspenders, ya know? :D
okay, okay, not very funny, I know...
I will be a long while before I can get another tat but man I am wanting one. I can't decide what it will be but I think i have decided it will be on my right arm either upper arm/shoulder area or I've been thinking about something on my wrist. My sis has a piece on her wrist though that has not worn well at all. Granted, it wasn't very well done in the first place but it is difficult even to tell what it is at this point from fading and blurring of the lines. She doesn't wear a watch or jewelry there or anything like that. I wonder how much of this has to do with the fact that it is on her wrist? Anyone else have any thoughts or have a piece on their wrist that has done well?
ian'smommaya
11-29-2004, 03:54 PM
i know palms of hands or bottoms of feet dont turn out well and fade alot. but i've seen wrist work done well that lasted. maybe check out what the artists work looks like now when it was done ten or so years ago.
ard do it do it do it do it do it do it.
it'll be fun.

hey all,
i have a small tat on my lower back, and i fully plan on expanding it into a large piece that stretches across my lower back. i went to get my nose pierced right after i found out i was pregnant, and they refused because i was pregnant.... the piercer said that they weren't allowed to pierce or tattoo any pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the risk of infection.... what do you say to this? now that i am no longer pregnant i am *itching* to expand my back piece, and perhaps pierce a thing or two. when i lose my belly flab, i plan on repiercing my navel, too :wink
also, any thoughts on tatoos on back hips stretching during pregnancy?
ian'smommaya
11-30-2004, 07:25 AM
we just talked about this. i wanted my lower back hips and tummy tatt'ed but it seemed the concenious here was skip the tummy til no more kiddos, cos of streaching. someone pointed out to think of a balloon, color on it then deflate it, soem of it still looks really good some looks streached out and weird.
we didnt talk about hips though.

Auriel Rene, I just had my tattoo done (link to pics on bottom of last page), and I am breastfeeding. My dd is 7m/o (today!) and still almost exclusively nursing. You may have to skim the thread to find it, but in several places some very good info has been posted about risks etc. of getting a tattoo while bf. Sorry I can't go looking for it for you, but I'm a bit pressed for time today (read: shouldn't be here in the first place! :LOL ). Personally, I didn't see any persuasive reasons not to-- the biggest risk seems to be the possibility of an adverse reaction to the ink, which can't really be assessed until, well, it happens. ;)
Piercing is a little different, I think, because of the open "wound" and greater risk of infection afterwards. Others here can probably give you better info. Best of luck to you!
AurielRene
11-30-2004, 03:03 PM
thanks for the info ladies....
i've been skimming around this thread and have picked up some good links and info, my only regret is that a lot of the links for ladies' tattoos are expired! :( the descriptions sounded really pretty, especially some of the ones describing stars and constellations. i guess now that i've asked a question i can introduce myself... :wink
my name's auriel. i have 3 sets of holes in my lobes that wer sized to a 14, but i let them go and they shrunk back... haven't worn earrings much lately, sincu utopia likes to pull on my hair, i can just imagine her tugging my earrings :crap i'd like to get some of the "twister" type rings for all three, and size them back up.... i said i didn't really wanna go larger than 10, but i like the tribal type earrings and most of them are a 6 or a 4..... so we'll see! i have a cartlige piercing in my upper left ear that i did myself when i was 16, with a sewing needle - guess i got lucky, 'cause it healed really well, and 4 years later it's happy at a size 12. i wear a long tongue rod in it, but now that my hair is a lot longer it gets caught a lot, so i want a twister for that, too, until i can turn it into an industrial. used to have my navel pierced but i had to take it out at 5 months prego, now it's all closed up - not too sad about that, though, since the guy pierced it crooked! :angry i'm not sure if i'll pierce that again or not, i may wat until i'm done having kids, but there will be a few years between them..... i want to get my right nostril pierced and i would like more ear piercings.
as for my one lonely tat, it's pretty tame. i got it while i was visiting saskatchewan a couple years ago. it's a small green maple leaf, divided by peace sign lines that are just skin, and it says 'devots' over it to commemorate the trip my partner and i take to canada every year. it's in the middle of my lower back, and around it i'd like to get a realistic looking lizard, curled in a circle, as a symbol for listening to dreams and intuition.then i think i'd like to get something around that, maybe a flamey sun or a crescet moon, i'm not sure. then below the whole thing, i want a silly tribal piece. i like a lot of the celtic knotwork type pieces, with spirals and the like. somewhere i'd like to have an oroborus or infinity sign, a lotus, something to commemorate my daughter and then subsequent children....oh, and when my partner and i "tie the knot" we're going to get matching celtic knotwork wedding bands on our ring fingers - his idea :love he wants to get a big tribal scorpion on his calf, too.... i always thought it would be cool to have a tat around my navel, but i definitely get the balloon analogy- after seeing how much it stretched during pregnancy i'll wait until i'm definitely done breeding!!
so there it is! glad i found this thread.

I now have a lady bug behind my ear and a floral/tribal piece down my side on my ribs. I also I had my DP pierce my outer labia :) Can't wait to get my hood pierced and then I'm going for 2 pinups on my thigh, my backpiece finished and a sister piece on my other side on my ribs :) I'll try to get some pics.

Ok, what is the site that has the bfing stuff??
I've had all my piercings and my tat done while bfing. None of my srtists have ever even asked. Just don't offer the info. The "infection" is kinda just hooey. You are more likely to develop keloids and scars though because you produce more colagen while bfing.

Anybody care to share experiences breastfeeding after nipple piercing? I had one for a year and took it out a about 4 yrs ago. That nipple (the right one, for what it's worth) is larger than the other now, and it seems to let down faster and leak more, but for some reason my 1 month cherub doesn't like it. She prefers the left, and it's been kind of tough getting her to take the right one too. I think we're finally getting there.
13moons
12-02-2004, 01:08 AM
hmm, well I don't have my nipple(s) pierced, richella, so I can't speak to whether that's common with the piercing or not, but I did have similar experiences without it. I am sure that one side would always let down faster and leak more (although I can't remember which one) and I know that dd#2 always did prefer one breast to the other and my ds would go through periods where he would prefer to nurse on the left more and then switch to the right for a couple months and so on. They would continue to nurse on the other side also ,just not as much and they would always go to the preferred side first. I did know a woman whose toddler eventually stopped nursing on the right side all together and she only nursed on the left for over a year. So maybe it has nothing to do with the nipple piercing you had... :)

Richella, I've also had similar experience as 13moons and her friend(s), and no nipple piercings. My left side has always been the better producer, bigger nipple, leaked more, etc. although my babies seem to prefer *that* side. HTH!

richella
12-02-2004, 02:14 PM
thanks for replying everybody, it's nice to know others have had similar experiences. I didn't know if it was related to the piercing or not, but I know the nipple is bigger than it was before. So now all I have to do is get used to the left breast being 2 cup sizes bigger than the right!

I have 2 holes in each ear, industrial, and tongue. I had an eyebrow, and anti-eyebrow, but both of those [unfortunately] grew out. I have plans to get the anti-eyebrow redone, and I also want.... conch, and maybe my lip. Maybe my nipples, too? :D
I also have a purple star on the back of my left arm, right above my elbow. I have plans for a few more tattoos... I'd like to get a small string of stars [about 3] on the side of my breast [kind of difficult to describe].... and some other stuff, but I'm not sure what yet.
So yeah, HI. :D
Also... am I hearing that some of you have gotten tattoos while you're breastfeeding? I've been going so crazy being unable to get any piercings / tattoos while pregnant... it was about time for a new one when I found out I was pregnant, so that was a little disappointing! I really hope I don't have to wait 1+ years until I'm done breastfeeding too. :bawl

pinkersmommy--if you can deal with it, I'd keep trying. when I first started taking mine out I had a REALLY hard time getting it back in, but I kept working at it and finally it went. My nostril was pretty sore for at least a day or so but at least I didn't have to get it repierced. I've never posted on this thread before, since I only have one loney tat (chinese dragon on the small of my back) and one lonely piercing that has been out for a few months now (belly ring) even though I'm hoping to put it back it in sometime soon. Anyway, I have a question for you all. Do your tattoos itch, when your hormones change? Everytime I am about to start my period, or when I first get pregnant, it starts to itch. Am I alone in this problem? Any ideas why it would happen? I'd love to get another tat but I don't want lots of itchy spots all over my body once a month. What do you think?

Although now that I am expecting another babe, no more tattoos for awhile. I am dying to get my arm finished. It was started before dd was born, and I am a lagger. It is easy to procrastinate getting it finsihed, when your boy does it. I have no piercings though, I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to that. We are actually traveling for the next few weekends so DP can do some "tattoo parties". They are pretty contagious, and once one person in a circle gets one, everyone else wants one too. Hi I have never posted here. I am pregnant for the first time...due in 2 weeks. My partner and I are both pierced and tattoed. I wanted to comment on the hood piercing posts...For me it was painless and for many of my friends as well. The healing time is really short. The triangle clitoris piercing is a different story though.
Currently I am living in Germany...at 6 months pregnancy I removed all of my nipple piercings because I kept seeing visions of a breast milk sprinkler system. I suppose that is just a silly new mother daydream. I would like to have them redone in the future. I am interested in knowing about breast feeding with nipple piercings though...any experience here??

ROTFLMAO @ breastmilk sprinkler system!! Welcome to the tribe, AmazoniaBelly! :w
I think I'm almost ready to go back for the rest of my hummingbird tat (got the bird & flower for my birthday in late Nov-- was that only a month ago? LOL). I've designed my own Celtic-ey vine design to frame the lower back/upper buttocks underneath the original bird/flower. Wish I could link to it (the file for the design), but hubby just nuked my hard drive and it's gone. :( You can view the tat HERE (http://www.ofoto.com/PhotoView.jsp?&collid=557303078105&photoid=808403078105).
The vine will be one continuous strand starting at the stem of the flower, wrapping around (looping over and under in various places in a Celtic style) with several loop-style triquetras (don't know the technical term for those) and creating the basic outline of a heart. It ends at the top right of the stem, where it curls up in the letter "C". When the whole thing is done, I don't plan on getting any more tattoos, but for the size/complexity of this "one", I think it's all I'll ever need.
<laughs at self> Before I went in to get the first part done, I'd intended to do the whole thing in one fell swoop. :rotflmao Then, for a few days after the bird and flower were done, I was sure I'd *never* go back in for the vine... ;) So we'll see if I'm really "done" once this is complete... :LOL

Ask StarMama...Orion's mom (isn't that her ID) She has nip piercings and bfs. There are a lot of women around here who have. As long as the piercings are healed (as in new piercings)you shouldn't have a problem. I think StartMama takes her jewelry out when she bfs and then just puts it back in when Orion is done...bu I could be wrong on that :)
Welcome!!

Ooh sorry for missing the breastfeeding with nipple piercing post!
I just removed my piercing right before the first time I nursed Orion, and haven't had any problems with it, except the hole is getting smaller and smaller, since I only put the piercing back IN about once a month for a few hours or so (its just too much of a pain in the behind to remember...). But as long as your piercings are well healed, if you take the time to put the jewlery back in, I wouldn't see a problem with keeping them. Heck, I think I'll be ok with mine, but I may have to have it tapered back open more at some point...
I did try to nurse Orion with the jewlery in, and it was REALLY uncomfortable, and I was worried about that being in his mouth, messing up his palate... that was when he was a newborn anyways, he's tried to nurse again with it in when he was older and wouldn't do it.
LMK if I can help anymore :)
Ooooh! So the reason I came here today anyways! I got a new tattoo yesterday!! Or 2 new tattoos, however you want to count them! I don't have photos yet, will get those soon :D But its 2 stars, one on each side of my chest, up high (one tip of each star hits my collarbone, the only part that really hurt much at all, and THAT part DID hurt. Luckily its only a tiny bit on the bone... was interesting to feel my throat vibrate when he did those spots). They are blue, going into baby blue, and the outsides have these little baby blue swirlies that are hard to describe, but it looks like script text from far away going around the stars.

How cute!! I can't wait to see pics!
I'm thinking of getting butterfly on my shoulder like where you are talking about but I'm struggling with the design. I want a coccoon and a butterfly but I don't want it big but I'm afraid without size youwon't see detail...
StarMama
01-09-2005, 09:35 AM
Yeah I was struggling with size too. I actually had a more detailed version (the "swirlies") but when I shrunk it down it was WAY too busy. And I really went back and forth on the total size, because I discovered when I got my arm tattoo that its better (for me at least) to get pieces that really fit the space they are going into, instead of just itty pictures here and there, yk? (like my back shoulder tattoos, which I really love the tattoos, but they'd be SO much better if they 'fit' the space), and then Dh was very 'are you *sure* you want those there??' and 'can they be smaller?' because he's concerned about me being able to hide them in "low cut shirts", but I told him that if I was wearing a low cut shirt, I wouldn't really be concerned about tattoos showing! Like I'd be wearing some sexy low cut thing to church, or a job interview, or similar, yk?
I'll take photos when I've got the tape marks off (I saran wrap them for sleeping the first two days, less sticking to things, less pain while sleeping, and its supposed to help keep more color in...) and get up and dressed! LOL! Waiting for Dh to get up so I can leave baby with him to take a nap! We've been up since 5am!

Hi, mamas!
ETA: everytime i mention this people look at me like a big freak, so maybe I really am alone in this problem :irked:
Huh! My tattos itch periodically, I've never noticed where it is in my cycle when it happens, but I'm going to try to nitce next time it happens. Mine get itchy and bumpy for an hour or two here and there.

Hi everyone new here, I hope its not too late to join in the tribe. I have my nose, eyebrow, tongue, belly, and labret pierced and I have a two tats one on my back, and one above my outer labia. My question is about the tat that I have by my labia, I have had it for a few months and it seems to have faded a bit, I was wondering if anyone else has one in the same area and if they have found that it has faded a lot over a long period of time. I also have a sort of embarassing question :bag: what is the best was to remove hair, without ruing the tat, and trying to avoid ingrown hairs. Now that I a have thoroughly made a fool of myself i will :bolt. Thanks in advance!
Arduinna

I don't have a tat that far down, but the ink is under the skin so method of hair removal shouldn't effect the tat. I personally prefer shaving for that area.

Lisa, they're beautiful! My kids think they're REALLY COOL too!!
The place I go for tatt's closed because the owner want's to travel and do tatts. I don't know where my artist went and I'm really :crying Don't know where to go now.....
StarMama
01-12-2005, 03:53 PM
Aw thanks Jacque! I was :crying too because the guy who did my big Orion piece left for Mexico! But the other guy at the shop got what I wanted, and did the colors SO perfect! I'm really happy, I didn't realize he made the blending from light to dark in the star shape too, and it looks so cool! Just barely noticable (*really* barely noticable right now, I've got BAD scabs from this one... maybe its how much the area moves when I move? Dunno).
And wow, this was a breeze to get, but its OWIE now. I can just constantly feel it, sore, tender. I think, because like I said, all the movement. I got it done saturday, and I guess I figured it wouldn't HURT this long. It still looks fine though, some serious scabs, but the reddness is gone, so I know nothing *wrong* is going on... Just not a fun tat to heal I suppose. Oh well, this will pass soon and I love love LOVE the design :D When its healed, I'll post another pic or two, maybe a closeup so you can see the colors better...

The site finally put something up about them closing. Someone said they lost their lease - but at least now I know where to find him - emailed him today!
This is some of his work http://www.eskustoms.com/jefftatpics.htm He's really awesome - he did some work on Gothmom (who I don't think posts here anymore) and I LOVED the work.
I'm concerned that it's hurting so much? I've never heard of that happening - keep a good eye on it and call the shop you notice anything else or the pain is still there this weekend - they are beautiful!

Those are some sweet tats!! You look amazing too :LOL
I'm ready for ink, metla...i just need SOMETHING :LOL
Maybe this weekend... I'm actually a ad nervus and I don't know why!
Oh, and I was wondering, what about scratches or cuts on a tattoo? You know if you bump it, after its healed of course. Can you damage a tat that way?
As for the labia tat...did that hurt?? I thought about having one maybe but thought it sounded too silly to do :LOL I would think shaing would be fine. What do women, or even men, do when they shave their legs?? Their tats are fine. :) I shave. The thought of waxing just makes me cringe; eyebrows yes, tender bits...NO! We tried that Nair stuff...I ended up with chemical burn!

I'm keeping a close eye on it, Jacque. I think the difference is, my last tattoo (the big Orion piece) I saran wrapped for 48 hours (changing it to clean it so it stayed realitivly dry), and this one only overnight because the tape REALLY irritated my skin. It doesn't hurt more than a nasty sunburn, its just the owwww is lasting longer than I anticipated... it *looks* fine, just scabby...
Never scratched a tattoo, so I wouldn't know about that...

hey neat thread. i have 2 tatoos, armband on forearm and one on the back of the neck. i have a clitoral hood piercing too and a question. did anyone else who may have had a hospital birth have them cut the damn thing off? they saidthey had to but i think i remember my ob saying i could leave it alone beforehand. hmmm...is there a reason for this? anyone else have that happen? dp was great and went and got another so we put it back right away (whew! i dont know if i could do it again :bag: ) ok, sorry if that's a totally random overshare or if its already been discussed. i skimmed but there are like 100 pages of posts now. :)
ok, did a search found a post on it. so is that why? they think it will tear? they think your clit will tear? i guess i should have fought that one.
oh well, while i'm editing does anyone have any tatoos in white ink? i want some white ink. i've heard it looks very different on different skin tones. any pictures? anyone want to enlighten me?

Just popping in to let you guys know I'm ok! (after working Ms.Mom like that!). I've lost some of the color in my stars, but will get a touch up, just waiting for the skin to not feel so dry and new before that, but overall they look pretty good! I think the extra pain was because this is the 2nd tat I've gotten that was really in a spot that *moved* and I remember the other one (butterfly, on back hip, *almost* on butt) hurt a ton while it healed too, and was scabby as heck!
Sorry I have no idea where to get noserings in that area, but how about online? And no experience whatsoever with surface piercing, so I'm no help in those two areas.
However, bratmobile, I think your doc was full of, well, you know. I had mine in for birth (as well as my nipple ring, and tounge stud, and nose stud, and all my ear piercings 4x side) and never had an issue at all. I mean really, come on, if you're going to tear **so** badly its going to rip your clitoris (and I have heard of it happening eeeek ow ow ow! :eek) what is the jewerly going to do? Make it worse? How? I think it was your ob's comfort in mind, not yours. (which hey, not saying *my* ob was great either, what with the medicating me up, down, and sideways for pre-eclampsia I didn't have!) I do get you on the embarrasement though! I had to have Dh help me take out my nipple jewlery to nurse Orion for the first time, with my MIL, FIL, and SIL in the room!
Oh, and white ink. I don't have any that stands alone, but in my Orion tattoo, I have the constilation outlined in white ink, and on me, it actually makes the white area *darker*, if that makes any sence. Sort of a light mocha coffee color (on my pale pale white skin). I've always thought it would be neat to have some white work (like maybe a star outline on the inside of my wrist), but it would be SUPER neat to have it done in blacklight white! But I hesitate, because blacklight ink has had so many problems. However, I did find one manufacture (don't remember the name of it now, sorry) that makes blacklight ink, where the stuff that's blacklight reactive is encased in itty bitty little cells (talking microcopic) so that technically it doesn't interact with your body at all. I tried discussing it with the guy who did the orion tattoo, but he wasn't really interested in looking into it. But the idea is darn cool, and if I *knew* the ink was safe, I'd go for it! (maybe not on the wrists yet, because even white ink might be too noticable in a very hard to hide spot like that, but somewhere else, to see how it looked healed for noticablity)

thanks StarMama. you know i was busy being upset at all the other things i ended up not liking about my hospital birth that i kind of forgot about that. now that i think about it, well :angry . what's messed up is that my ob (who did not end up delivering ds) said no biggie beforehand and then when i got there they said "its going to have to come out." oh well, if i could turn back time. and i've never heard of blacklight ink. i assume it glows under black light? the girl i saw was really pale and said it would show whiter on darker skin. im neither super dark or light, i guess i'll be on the lookout to see how it is on different folks. and what problems has blacklight ink had? just curious. :)

I have some white ink on a tattoo I got about 9-10 years ago, it's mostly faded. It was just some accenting on my flower tattoo. You can one spot where it still is. It actually shows up quite well on my very pale skin (it's on my breast).
Hi all! 3 tats and a tongue piercing here. I'm working on my next one but a bit stumped on what I want for the finished product.
Right now I have my sons' name and birthday arching across my back. I want to get a tattoo somewhat representing mother and children, and then have my daughters name underneath arching the other way so that it sort of makes an oval.
They very VERY basic idea I have is this (http://www.metalmom.com/tattoo%20copy.png).
It's the Celtic tree of life with the ogham for the month's my children and I were born colored the same as our birthstones.
Now, that's only the shape I want the tree. I have basically zero artistic skills and no clue how I want to make it look anyway (shaded in black and grays or more realistic) nor have I figured out how to work in the ogham, though I think I want them on the trunk.
Any suggestions?

Yup uv tattoos: http://www.bmezine.com/tattoo/uv001.html
I think the basic problem with most uv inks is that it can be REALLY irritating after its in your skin, and of course since its IN your skin, really hard to remove if you have reactions.
Here's the faq on the supposedly "safe" ink. http://www.blacklightworld.com/FAQ%20Tatoo%20Ink.htm
Oh and as far as white ink, I've always been told (and seems true from looking at tattoos on the bme site) that white is going to show up best on *pale* skin. Consider this: Ink is going to show up from *thru* your skin. So whatever color your skin is, is going to affect how you see the ink. If you have very dark skin, its going to mask the ink, or discolor it. Course I don't know how that accounts for th cool lizard tattoo then! hehehehehe
Xie, I think an all black tree would look nice, or brown trying to keep it realistic looking (mostly) if its a big enough design :)

Hello all.
I've just joined today and was very happy to see all these people with at least some similarity!
I've got 11 piercings
- 9 in my ears starting at the age of 12
- my nose which I had done at the age of 16
- my tongue which I had done at the age of 27
I've got 2 tattoo's
- 1st one I had done at 22 and it is a Sun with moon & Stars inside of it that I designed. It is on one of my shoulder blades (I can never remember which one...~laugh~
- my 2nd tattoo I had done last year and is a line drawing of an elephants head, that I also designed. It is my totem animal (animal spirit guide). It's on my low middle back.

Anyone have a tat on the inside of their bottom lip??? I want to get "I AM" done somewhere and thought it might be neat but not sure how it'll hold up.

Hey I think if you want your nose pierced, get it pierced. Worst case scenario: you find it doesn't suit you or your image, take it out and let it heal. I love mine. And they have really very tiny, pretty stones that you can wear after it's healed for a much "softer" look if you want it.
Really, I have found that people think much less about a nose piercing now that it is not uncommon for people to have jewelry pretty much anyplace else in their face. Not the case when I first had it done 16 years ago :eyesroll Even so, I tutor high school students, usually in their homes, and I will generally take it out until I know if the family will be bothered by it or not. I don't mind removing it out of respect for a parent who might be upset for whatever reason. (I do not take out my 12 earrings though :D )
Xie-- I like your tat idea...the Celtic tree of life is very high up on my list of tattoos to get but I haven't decided the exact design yet. I like the all black but I've thought about a real dark green too.

Yes nose rings are not a big deal (at least the small and delicate ones). I've never gotten anyone looking at me strangely for it, except my older brother when I got it done when I was 16 (so like almost 11 year ago now! EEEK! I'm OLD!).
I'd agree, go for it! :) Maybe get one of those magnetic or stick on ones first to see how you like it?

I had my nose pierced at the age of 17 and wore a hoop until I was 25 (I'm now 29) as I found it much more comfortable then studs. Now I have found a nose "pin" that I really like (a nose pin has a ball at the end of the stem that goes inside your nose to keep it there so it won't fall out). It took me a while to figure out how to get it in, but once it was in I was good. It's just a tiny silver ball that is barely noticible. A lot of people however never even noticed my nose was pierced, even when I had my hoop in... ~laugh~

I have a tattoo opinion question. I thought this might be the place to ask. I have 6 already. My smaller ones took about 2 hours & my largest took about 8, to give you a size idea.
Do any of you have tattoos on your forearms? How or why did you decide to go there?
Edited to add: Just being nosy, what did you get and why?

Just a thought around tattoo's on forearms. I only have 2 tattoo's myself and don't have any on my forearms but my brother has a ton more tattoo's then myself. The lowest he's gone is elbow as he wants to be able to wear a short (elbow length) dress shirt to work without too much poking out. I would probably do the same, but it depends where you work sometimes I guess. I don't know if that helped at all...~laugh~

I personally don't have any on my forearms..just back and chest..but I wouldn't mind getting any there..I'm actually thinking about it :mischief If I can get DH to even tattoo me again! :eyesroll
DH is a Tattoo Artist (has been for 8 yrs) and he doesn't even have any visible yet..except the one on his chest under his throat of my name..and our 2 kids one on each wrist..on the underside..but those aren't even visible..all his tattoos are still covered on his arms and legs..
It's weird becuase your typical Tattoo Artist if full of Tattoos..on the contrare..hubby doesn't have any on his forearm or neck Yet!!
I still think a tattoo on your forearm IS a big deal..and shouldn't be taken lightly! You can still get stereotyped by it even now that Tattoos are very common!

I specifically do not have forearm tattoos because of the visiblity issue. I plan on opening an at home childcare center for a few children in the future, and I think it could color the parent's perception of me. My upper arm tattoos specifically end about a 1/4 from my elbow so I can wear normal length tee shirts and cover them. And my chest stars, same thing. I really like showing them off though, and its very easy to do that as well.
I really do want a white outline of a star on the inside of my wrists, which wouldn't be *very* noticable, but I am still putting that off indefinately so I am employeeable (even though I just want to stay a SAHM! but you never know what the future will hold)

well, to be honest i think it would make a difference if you are a man or a woman.
the men i know with neck, hands, face or lower arms tattooed do better, job wise, than the women i know with the same tattoos. i know it's icky but the men i know get jobs like carpentry, masonry, tattoo artist, etc. the women with tattoo like forearms are hair stylist, office worker, etc.
one woman has had a hard time because she has an obvious political prisoner tattoo on her forearm, please remember were still here with a hand reaching out of prison bars, she is a paralegal and feels she must cover it up for work. i would let someone with arm tat's childcare for me, but i have lots of tattoo's soo.....
do what you want, the rest will come.

ian'smommaya, that is so true and so sad! I remember working at a retail place and the male managment had large flames around both wrists, no problem. But if my ankle tattoo showed when I was wearing a calf length skirt it was an issue. GRRR. The ankle issue was prior the the management's employement, and the manager who told me to cover my tiny ankle tattoo was long gone before that. So, couldn't do much about it...
And I'm sure that most mama's on this thread wouldn't judge my character by my tattoos, if they were approaching me inquiring about child care, but we are not the majority, yk? Its sad that people can't just be ok with others wanting to decorate themselves. Its not like I have a naked lady on my arm, or curse words, just beautiful art.
And I SO want to make a statement with my tattoos, and NOT "care" about my employability, but I have to be rational first and make sure my family is taken care of.... so *sigh* I'll deal. I do think it would be really cute to have a tiny tattoo on a wrist you'd wear a watch over though! :LOL Cept I can't wear tight watches anymore, they hurt my wrists...
Awww Des! I love summer here because I can show off! :D But I have found that my chest stars show up a lot even in long sleeved shirts. I'm starting to collect scoop necked sweaters! And I have a lot already, because I want to be able to nurse over the TOP of my shirts when out and about, because I pop Orion in his kozy to nurse in public and then continue on my business while he nurses!
What are you planning on next?

Any experience? I'm wondering if there is too much "movement" for it to last. I was thinking of getting my I AM there.

Star mama,
It's really very sad. My mom just opened a really "with it" salon in a small town. She specialized in extreme hairdo's , especially with intense contrasting colors. She has a peircer who works there (my SIL) and her work is quickly becoming in demand as there is no one in town that peirces and normally people would have to go to the nearest bid city to get a peircing. My mom is very popular with the young people and no one else in town does that kind of hairstyles. The other shops are old lady cuts and perms. There are a few establishments in town now that have banned extreme hairdo's and visible peircings for their employees. Way to go mom! She is causing quite a stir in the town.

It most likely would be gone/blurred/illegible before the year is over.
Same deal with palms, fingerpads, bottoms of feet.

That is awesome! I wish we had someplace like that here. Well, we do but the cuts alone are about 75 and the color is about the same price. I just go and have a lady cut mine it looks oldish when she styles it but then I spike it out and color it. its black right now with bronze tips. I'm hopefully doing purple the next time I need a dye job but I'm not sure how to get bleached enough to color it purple...

I said most likely. ;) There are always exceptions to every rule, and that is totally awesome that yours has lasted so long :thumb
Ive heard that the inner lip heals extremly fast and well.
Is this true?
ian'smommaya

mine did. but all my other tat's healed well too except the first color ones that i didnt at all take care of. i miss understood what the artist said about care. i had really good luck with the rest though.

Now I wonder if I should chance it.... I really want it there.
I thought about my wrist but I'm afraid I couldn't cover it. I have a possible job oppurtunity in a church office so now I have to rethink my piercing/tat plans :( But I really want the job, hoping it branches into more what I want in the future.
I'll talk to my tat guy and see what he thinks.
ian's--What do you have tatted there???

Exactly--if you get it inside your lip and it fades, you are out the $$ you spent on the tat, which sucks, but otherwise, no harm done, right? Then you could choose another place for it, but if it doesn't fade then you've got your tat where you really want it. If you don't try, you won't know if it will work for you.... ;)
As for the wrist, you could always wear a fat watch--my sister has a tat on her wrist that she hides with a watch very well at work. Just a thought.
Nothing like a little good old-fashioned peer pressure, eh? :D
I'm with ian'smommaya--get it get it get it!!

Yeah, Id have to say, if you really want it there (and can deal with the possibility of a blur in the future) then go for it. Maybe thats where its supposed to be.
Such a small and simple tattoo shouldnt cost you much either.
But, you will HAVE to post a pic and let me know how it heals. Im totally curious about the inner lip. ;)

He quoted me 60 before the lip idea. I'll have to ask if that makes a difference.
I'm getting it!!!

60 seems like alot for three letters and how big could they be? check around and see what others say.

$60 seems normal actually.
Usually for something like that, shops either have an hourly rate or a minimum shop fee, which is used for anything under an hour and is usually from $50-$75.
For small tattoos, It is not the time that costs the shop money, but the supplies and set-up. I know that even though I am just beginning to learn, that if I charge under $30, it is not worth my time and money to do a tattoo.

andrea that makes sence. i didnt think of set up time etc. maybe it's our family could do two in one tattoo?

I'm not switching guys, thats for sure.
The shop hourly is 100 and the shop minimum is 60. From the way they talked they don't normally go as low as 60. But he likes us :)
Maybe I'll go next week.... or I should call him and find out first.

There are a lot of shops that also use their hourly rate as the minimum rate.
i.e. $120 an hour and $120 minimum.

Is anyone in this group in Seattle? I need a tat artist recommendation. My favorite tat guy moved to Iowa with his girlfriend a couple years ago and now I'm lost without him :angry - I have a tattoo for my oldest son and am ready to do one for my second (maybe now, maybe after I wean, depending on what I decide about the hep vax)
any referrals?

Oh hey, I am pierced. :D
I just got my belly button re-done, (first got it when I was 18 then took it out while pregnant) it was supposed to be my special 30th b-day present since I am a single mom and I was giving myself something (GREEDY!)
Well...I guess the hole hadn't closed all the way since I had had it so long so they didn't even charge me for it. :) (the girl who did it was HOT!! by the way..I am not into chicks and I thought she was hot)
So well..I am going to get a tatoo tomorrow with the belly button funds. :) (yes, I know it will be more expensive *L)
Anyone in Kansas City area I recommend Freaks on Broadway.

I'm sorry! We're supposed to get the snow tonight/tomorrow morning - just in time to take the kiddies to school!
Do you have any tattoos yet? It sounds cool - are you doing it in all black? Now I want a pic! Don't tell Hilary, she'll chew you out :LOL
I want a new tattoo SOOOO BAD!!!! - the city my artist was in finally succeeded in having them kicked out :angry so, I'm waiting for them to find a new place.
By the way - the Magic Carpet Ride has emerged :bag:

I might not do it all in black..it could have a little color and look neat but only one at most.
Oh...uh..ok I won't tell Hilary. :scared:
the city wanted the tattoo people kicked out? :( That blows. YOu can come and visit me and I can take you to a really great tattoo place.
I am going to go tomorrow and get it done/
