Hey there pierced mamas- I only have my ears pierced, and never wear earrings, so can't really join you here, but I posted a question on childhood years about getting dd's ears pierced, if you don't mind coming over and giving some input. http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=471097
Thanks!!

Hey mama's~
Im pierced and tattooed also. I have 5 tattoos, but one is a cover-up so only 4 showing. Both shoulder blades, right is a sun w/ yin/yang in the center, left shoulder is a native american dream catcher, my left ankle has a large "Coop Devil" (an old comic book character, usually has a cigar in his mouth, I had them take the cigar out) and my lower back is a very large tribal. I love my tattoo's and would love to get another on my right ankle and even thinking about one on my upper arm. I have 6 piercings, ears, nose, and belly button, and had my tongue done, but took it out for a job about 4yrs ago and it closed up:( really regret taking that one out!

hey mamas, i have a quick question for you. dha nad i each have 3 tats, the 3rd being done last saturday. here's the deal, a friend suggested we see a friend of his that was giving away tats for free because shes trying to build a portfolio, well, we've both been wanting a new piece so we took up the offer, needless to say they both turned out less than great. and we were basically lied to about her abilities, we're both kicking ourselves because the guy we normally see is amazing.
so here's the q: dh new tat is really dark, it looks terrible and doesnt look like him at all, is there a way to lighten up a black filled in tat? sorry if this is a no brainer... but i've been freaking out because its right on his forearm and I have to look at it and I hate the way it turned out. TIA. Peace.

laser surgery. you can't cover up a color with a lighter color. it is much cheaper to just pay for a good tattoo that pay to fix a cheap/free tattoo. good luck to you guys. around here you can get a tattoo lasered for $150 for four square inches (per session).

Go to your good artist and ask him if he can fix it. I've seen some amazing covers out there. Depending on how big it is and what exact color it is you could put something over it. My dad had a big dark green dragon he got turned into a dragon on his arm. And I got an anarchy sign turned into a spider...Good Luck!

Yeah, that's often about all you can do.
I also second defectgrrrl's recommendation of seeing what your other tattoo artist can do to help. It's going to cost you, but it will be less than the laser surgery!
Hello everyone- can anyone recommend a reputable website that sells body jewelry. I want a nose ring that is a teeny-tiny silver ball. I need 18 gauge but want something small so it simply looks like a tiny twinkle in my nose. My piercer didn't really have anything (his stuff is more industrial and I'm looking for more feminine)... Any help is greatly appreciated!

Mine had that. I alternated from leaving it the hell alone (lol) and putting some sea salt water on it--no stronger than tears.
It's all better and a-okay. This was about a month ago. Took about 2 days to see improvement, 7 days for 100% improvement and I've been good since.
Also look into titanium jewlery.
I'm no expert, but the mamas here are, and this is what they told me and it worked!

Greetings tattooed/pierced mamas! I would love to join this tribe! I currently have 2 tattoos~ a cluster of berries that represent all of my "dogberries", and a trinity symbol with DH, DD & my name circling it.
I'm currently not-so-patiently waiting for my upcoming appointment in OCTOBER (man is that a long way off, lol!) with Jennifer Moore of Sanctuary Tattoo in Portland, Maine. Check out her work, I think it's just amazing!! www.sanctuarytattoo.com Her waiting list is like forever long... and since we'll be driving up from CT~ October is the first chance we got to see her. I am so exited, as this will be my first really big piece!!
Hopefully hanging out here a bit will make the wait easier, lol!:wink
Lunasmommy~ so glad you'll be able to be fixed up~! What a nightmare!

Good!
We are in a similar boat except we did go to a good tat guy and paid good money for sh**** tats. They totally suck and we HATE them!!! The guy scarred us so bad it isn't even funny. His work on skin and off skin looked great. His portfolio was good. We watched him tat first and saw tats of his in all different stages in person. (We spent a lot of time with him) and he butchered us. We hadn't seen any bad work of his. No on had ever heard of him doing bad work.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr..............can you tell it hacks me off!

Haven't been on this thread for a while - just got my tragus pierced today - actually I forgot all about it until a moment ago when I thought there was a mosquito flying past my ear and went to brush it away OUCH!
I had bought this pretty little stud for my nostril last year actually. It's a four-pointed star, with a little diamond in the center. Actually it's an eight-pointed star but four of the points are long and the other four are really little. Anyway, I like my nose stud to lie really flat up against my nose, but the way my nose is shaped, it wasn't working out - first I went back and asked him to readjust it because it was sticking out too much, and then had to go again and have him extract it (very painfully!) because it was sticking in too much. Regretfully I went back to my small silver ball, and put the star in a baggie for another time. (Couldn't deal with any more pain right then.)
So today I finally got around to having it put in. I had a lot of medical stuff going on over the last few months etc. and didn't want to do it because it wasn't a good time - plus I wasn't sure where I'd stashed it, which was too bad because it was $$$$ and I really like it, but last week I got the all-clear healthwise (no more MRI's for a while) and last night I found it! It did hurt quite a bit, but only for a minute (and then again just now :dizzy: when I smashed into it trying to brush away the mosquito that probably got away).

Hey there Mamas. I was just looking through this thread. I actually have 7 tattoos and 7 piercings. On my right shoulder blade I have my little dragon protecting me. It was my first tattoo. On my left shoulder blade I have a celtic cross with my youngest son's name, on my entire lower back is a huge tribal with my oldest son's name. Also, on my right shoulder is a monkey smoking a cigar with U.S.N. under it. It was my dad's tattoo, he got it in the navy. On my right calf is my tiger with the chinese symbols for my name. On my left wrist is a little bit of tribal with the word 4Es hidden in it (the bar that I've worked at forever) and on the top of my left foot is the molecular structure for caffeine.

Welcome.....I love that all of your tats have significance. I think some people don't understand that having a lot of tattoos can be like a living map to your history, a map that only you understand. It is much different that having a tattoo because it's "cute". Sometimes just the act of getting a tattoo (or piercing) is significant if it's during a certain part of your life (like a break-up or just a new mental/emotional breakthough).
Did you all see the article in the new Mothering about teen navel piercing. I was slightly annoyed they called it "belly" piercing and not navel, but was glad to see that they gave a section to talk about the APP and their recommendations. I didn't actually read the article yet, as I read it in line at the store (couldn't afford it...magazine or food?...FOOD!)

Hi, I'm just stopping by to ask some questions! I'm not pierced or tattooed....yet, but seriously considering it. I always like the idea of both, but was scared of the pain. :lol Now I'm older and wiser and have decided the pain will definitely be worth it.
I want to get a tat for my DS. Having a child is the most significant thing I've ever done in my life and I want to always, always remember how I feel right now, when he's still just a little guy. I'm not very creative and all I can think of is maybe his newborn footprint? My sister said they can scan the pic, print it on a temp tat and ink it on that way. True? Where on my body would be a good place to put it? I was thinking on the back of my shoulder, where I'm not likely to get any stretchmarks (I'm very, very prone to stretchmarks).
And the piercing...well I want it in a very personal place. :wink My sister has her hood pierced and says it's very, very good for extra-curricular activities. :lol Can anyone share their personal experience? (I'm blushing just thinking about this) I don't want gory details :duck:, just a simple explanation of what it does to make the experience better will do.
Thanks!

Some of my tattoos hurt, some didn't hurt so much. I think it depends on location (part of the body) but it's not a pain that bothers me either.
Shaunam - I saw a lady (a stranger getting something from an icecream vendor) with her dcs' newborn footprints on the side of her calf once. There were more than one - I think maybe three. It looked beautiful. I also know someone who has her child's baby handprint on her upper arm/shoulder. Not newborn size, exactly, but definitely definitely cool looking.

When I got mine about 10 years ago, everyone was telling me that the ankle was one of the most painful places to get a tattoo because the needle was hammering right over the bone.
But I could have taken a nap through my tattooing. Towards the end it got a bit tender, but other than that it was fine.

getting my ribs/stomach tattooed killed! i think the more common spots are pretty painless.
SleepyMamaBear
07-03-2006, 04:25 PM
IME the closer you get to a "pit" of an area the more it hurts, like close to the armpit, the elbow pit, the knee pit, etc...
my Pumpkin on my forearm was comfy until he got close to my elbow pit, then it went from a-ok, to "ok are you finished yet?"
and my dahlias on the backs of my calves were fine , but not near the knee pits, that area killed!
also some people have different sensitive areas. one mama i know LOVES getting her ribs tattooed and said it was soothing for her (i think she is nuts!) but HATES getting her arms inked, says it KILLS.
everyone is different. and every tattoo is different

Yeah, it's a fun one. It took a while to decide between estrogen and caffeine. But, in the end...I can't really move in the morning if I don't have coffee. But I'm still thinking about getting the estrogen anyway. My DP and I went and got them a few years back. He got the molecular structure for testosterone. :p

Tatts hurt but it is a tolerable pain. I've read a book while I got every one of mine.
Though I must admit the worst was the back of my neck. I think it was bad because not only is it boney but I had to have my head bent forward the whole time. And the needle was like shaking my brain.
Next tattoo up is a sleeve on my right arm. I wanted something AR but not too uhhh..gross or anything. So I found a girl to design me some sool animals. Here are links to the pics that are done so far. Tell me what you think!

Wow that hurt:dizzy: bad. Some areas weren't bad at all, I could hardly feel them, others make my foot jump (hitting nerves) and I could feel the bone and toes vibrating. Weird feeling. The by far worst of all worst was the lowest part, down on the foot, and the swirls around the ankle bone. And the ver last line of the swirls at the back of my ankle. Hole crap. Ah well, it's done, and pretty, and only took an hour and 45 minutes. With a break!
I will get a pic today and post it. I also need to get new pics of me in general online, because I dyed my hair black and it has grown about 3-4 inches since my wedding last year, which the most recent photo I have online...

As of now, I'm kinda boring. I have one on my right shoulder blade, it's a moon and stars. But I am working up the cash for a new one. My husband designed it for me, it has some symbolism in it that is important to me, plus is really pretty. Hopefully I will have it by the end of the month. I am planning on a few others eventually, but really like to put a lot of thought into them, so who knows how long it will take me. I also plan on a belly button piercing as soon as I have lost a bit more weight.:o

Bella Babe, I think Abilene is about 2 hours (less if you drive like my husband) south west of DFW. If I remember correctly, you just follow I20. My family and I drove through DFW on the way here. I haven't really been any other place in TX. I heard Austin is pretty nice. Have you ever been there?
NaturalWoman, thanks for the info. To be honost, I've never heard of Stillwater but I'll look it up.
~Any of you guys watch Miami Ink? Well, a guy I know (the dad of one of my daughters school friends) said that he had an appointment to get a portrit of his two kids on his arm by that chick (sorry don't remember her name) on that show. Too bad I have to wait till school starts again to see it. Any of you have a picture of your kids on ya? A good friend of mine got her newborn son's footprints on her lower back. It looks AWSOME! :thumb

The footprint idea is neat. I am not a huge fan of portrait tats. Maybe for other people but not for me. that is why I went with a crescent moon and two stars for my two kiddos! I can add on as I birth more...:lol
Well, you probably don't want to drive 2.5 hours for your tattoo, eh, Gildson? The wonderful, awesomely talented and kind man who did mine is in Denton. About 30 minutes NORTH of Dallas. He is my best friends brother and really very talented. He also is the most communicative tat artist I have known.
But 2.5 hours away.
Austin is very cool. I am actually going down with my sisters and some friends for my sister bachoelorette party in Sept. We'll be good. Promise!

I actually came to this thread looking for advice/info on body art during nursing (which I found in the early pages of the thread). Forgive me for not reading the entire thing through . . . but 40 pages! :eek This is a lively thread!
I have one tattoo, which I got when I was 18 and have been wanting to cover since I was 18 1/2. :lol Ahh, the impetuousness of youth!
I've been a much bigger piercing afficionado over the years, partly because of personal preference and partly because of finances (the tats I have envisioned would be PRICEY, and I've been on a shoestring budget for ages!). At the height of my pierced glory I had: ten holes in my ears (four in each lobe and two cartilage piercings in my right ear), my nostril, 8ga in my tongue, my navel, both nipples, and a horizontal hood piecing. I LOVED all of my jewelry!
The navel piercing started migrating about 5 years after it was done, after I changed the jewelry and added a charm that created too much downward pull. I took out the tongue and hood piercings on the advice of my acpuncturist, who was concerned that the metal intersecting my conception vessel meridian might create problems in my (then-first-trimester) pregnancy. (Considering that I got pregnant through birth control, I probably didn't need to worry . . . but figured that it was no big deal to take them out; I can always have the tongue re-done when I am done having kids . . . and I was never happy with the hood piercing anyway; should've gotten a vertical instead of horizontal.) The nipple piercings I removed the day before I gave birth, and I definitely plan on re-piercing after my breastfeeding days are done (figuring child-led weaning with 3-4 children, that is probably 12-15 years away!:lol).
I am currently working on stretching my lobe piercings (I've got the bottom hole up to a 4ga eyelet, which I LOVE . . . and am planning on getting gradually smaller eyelets into the next three holes), and planning for my next tattoo. My birthday is next week and I have $350 in credit at a tattoo/piercing shop (did some bartering while I was still pregnant) . . . I just have to (a) find out if the artist is willing to work on a nursing mama (DD is 4 months old), and (b) decide whether I want to spend the money on a new tat or a bunch of new jewelry.
Glad to meet you all . . . and rest assured, I will be back! ;)
ETA: Called the tattoo artist, and he will work on me. So now I just have to select between the few designs I have been playing with in my head for years, and make the appointment! :jumpers:

Hello there Birth Junky. It is so cool that you will be getting some art. Sorry I don't know much about getting tatts while nursing however I do have some advice.... It is ALWAYS important to take proper care of you tatt.... the last thing you would want is for an infection of any kind while breast feeding. Which leads me to another point... pay the money to have a good artist do a good job (I learned the hard way). A tattoo done "properly" along with good after care, should heal fast and look great.
Have fun and let us know what you decied to get. :thumb

I DID IT!!!
Went last night and had the first part of my new tattoo done--the outline and shading. Motherhood Star (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d70/BirthJunky/P1010008.jpg)
I am still working out EXACTLY what I'm going to do with it next . . . unsure yet whether I want to color in the inner space on the triquetras and/or star, or leave it all as is. And there is still the matter of the names; I was planning on (current and future) baby names around the inside of the star in small, tight print . . . but the tattoo artist suggested maybe putting the names around the outside of the design, in swirling script that connects between names. So, I am thinking it over--I still have some credit left with him, and I also scheduled an appointment next week to go back and start doing massage again, now that DD is old enough to be left with her dad for an hour or two. And good thing, too; when we got home, DH started sketching, and now has the design figured out for his FIRST tattoo! :D So, we've got a few projects in mind for the future . . .

Okay, this is my first post on here. I just found this site. This is one long thread. I have to admit I didn't read all 79 pages. I have 7 tattoos and all my piercings are in my head. :p Um, I have both ears pierced 3 times and my ears are gaged to 1/2 inch. My tragus onthe right side is pierced and my rook on the left. My labret is done and I have a nose stud- although here in the next few days I am going to take out my labret and get a small ring on the right side of my bottom lip instead. Some of my tattoos are cheesy- looking back I should have put a tad more thought into them. I am eventually going to have sleeves, but as of right now I only have a half sleeve on my left arm. On a side note I have a 2 year old and 4 month old- both st. patricks day babies!

I've been planning my tattoo for awhile but this is my problem. I live in the Upstate of South Carolina where up until recently it was illegal to tattoo in the state. I don't want to go to any of the parlors that are opening here because I'm not familiar with the artists. (Actually, I am not familiar with any artists but that is why I'm asking questions here!!!) Does anyone know of a reputable tattoo parlor within about 2 hours driving distance of Greenville, SC? I know alot of people go to Ashville, NC and there are some that go to the Atlanta, GA area. Both are places that I could travel to easily.
Thanks in advance for the info....

No new tat, or actually fixed tat, for me this year :( I cann't tell you how sad I am.
Wanna know why??
We have to replace the engine in dh's car. EVERYTHING we have in savings is almost gone. So, the work we both spent all winter/spring saving for is going into his car.
Makes me glad we had a savings but sad to see it all go :(

I'm planning on getting a large back piece and have also set my mind to losing weight as well. I've waited a long time to get this back piece, and I don't want to delay it due to my lack of losing weight.
so, what do you think? If it's going to look bad, then I will wait until I lose the weight, but if it'll be ok, then I'm planning to get it in September.

Where on your back? I have tatts on my upper back and have gained and lost 50 pounds with pregnancy and they look fine. I think it depends on where you carry your weight and how much you want to lose. If your going to eventually lose a lot of weight your carrying in the place you want to get tattooed I'd wait.

I also have my belly button pierced and 4 holes in my left ear, as well as 3 at the top and 5 holes in the right ear. And I love every single one of them. So far my tattoos haven't been distorted by my pregnancy... Fingers crossed!

Hi
I need some advice :)
After years of wanting to pierce my nose I finally made up my mind to do it and made an appointment for next week (when I will have the funds:p ) :banana
So here's my question. I want to get a thin hoop, because I like the look of them and I have heard the heal faster. However, I am concerned that it will be too big of a 'target' for my 20 month old son. I can just imagine him wanting to play with that pretty shiny thing in mama's face :lol
Anybody get a facial piercing done with toddlers in the picture? Did you have a hard time teaching them that it's off limits? Or should I go with a stud untill he is older?
TIA

07-27-2006, 12:46 PM
lilylove--I got my nostril pierced when I had a toddler around. I only remember having one grabbing incident but he pretty quickly got used to seeing it there and ignored it. Plus it is hard for them to launch a sneak attack on your face so generally you will see it coming if they go to grab for it and can stop it before it is a problem.;) I didn't think it was a big deal. That said, I must add that I had a stud in mine. I don't know that it would make a difference though. Something shiny is something shiny.

I really don't think that you will have a problem with your little one once he is use to it. I have a hoop in my nose. I think that hoops are better when first getting something pierced cause you can clean it better. If you do get a hoop, see if you can find a continous (sorry about spelling) hoop. They have been hard for me to find but are way better cause you don't have that ball.

heather, it should be long enough now that you can just take it out and try it. i'd say do an hour at first and see if it feels tight going back in. after a few more tries, see if you can go longer. if you ever get "stuck" and don't think it's gonna make it back in, you can always go to a pro and get them to put it back in for you.

Hi! I've really been enjoying reading this thread! I have one small tattoo of a henna design on my foot and have had my nose and navel pierced, but no longer wear those piercings.
I have a question for those of you experienced with tattoos. I'm getting a fairly large tattoo of a tree on my back this weekend. I'm also being treated for really resistant thrush and am taking diflucan. Do you think there's any reason I shouldn't go ahead with the tattoo? Obviously I'm nursing, but I know the place I'm going to is very clean and the equipment being used is sterile, so I'm no more worried about contracting a blood-born disease than I would be going to a doctor. Maybe this is silly, but I guess I'm just a bit worried about the thrush spreading to the tattoo? Or my healing being compromised since my immune system is being taxed? I'm not really sure, but I thought I'd ask!
TIA!

it is something that you should ask your artist. a lot of those decisions are artist specific, they would probably know best. how big of a tattoo are you getting? one of mine is as big as a dinner plate and took 3.5 hours, it is amazing, but i never see it. lol.

Howdy, tribal tribe!
I've got four tattoos: a 12-year old 3" daisy just below my belly button (it grew to HUGE proportions during pregnancy yet managed to keep its integrity postpartum :p ), a 10 YO 18" fairy (Brian Froud's stray sod) on my left calf, an 8 YO 8" chameleon (from Leo Leonni's A Color of His Own) on my ribcage, and a 3 YO 6" jellyfish (from Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms In Nature) on my left shoulder. I've got self-pierced ears (doubles) and have my eyebrow pierced but don't wear jewelry in it anymore.
DH has five tatts: a shoulderblade dragon, an ankle flower (done by a buddy with a homemade tattoo gun), a right shoulder sun/moon, a left shoulder tarot card "the star", and a jellyfish on his forearm. He's got piercings in both nipples, tongue, nose, his ear gauged and a prince albert.
We haven't noticed any increase in strange looks since we've become parents... but then again we haven't gone out to too many places with DD yet.
Pleased to meet you all!

Drat! I accidentally knocked out my new tragus piercing (with a towel, drying my hair) over the weekend. Well, it was sort of new, I got it about a month ago. I tried calling the piercing shop to see if the piercer was there, but only got the machine a few times, I kept calling back because I was thinking everyone (his wife is a tattoo artist, and so is the only other guy who works there) was too busy to pick up. But I've also known them to close early occasionally so I couldn't tell if they were there - usually someone does answer the phone.
I couldn't risk just getting in the car and going there because it was too far to make it there and back before I had to pick up ds. And I tried putting the jewelry back in, but it wouldn't go. Sure did make it bleed with the efforts, though. Since then, I haven't been able to find the time to go there, and he's going to have to re-pierce it anyway so it doesn't matter when I go.
Oh well, just venting. It looked so pretty! And I really didn't anticipate it hurting as much as it did to get it pierced - WAY more than any of my tattoos, that's for sure. Although, much quicker - but still. I almost don't want to go get it re-done (thinking of the pain - am I really such a coward?) but I love the jewelry and really liked how it looked. Phooey.

Geez, how have I not seen this thread for so long? I guess you find something new everyday on MDC :lol
I wanted to see who all has posted on here, but this thread is just too long for me to read.
I have a few tatt's. I have a little bumble bee on my wrist (which was my first tatt), I have a nice, somewhat scrolly (slightly tribal) tatt that covers most of my upper arm on the right. On my left I have a "Blue Headed Raven Goddess" that I found on a goddess calendar. It was all original work and it is really awesome. Her body is black and "white" striped and she is squatting. She has great breasts that hang down. People comment on it all the time because it really pops with all the color and it is so original. I used it to cover a tattoo I didn't like, which was a chinese character that was supposed to mean strength but instead turned out to mean "small rodent" (ya, you heard me) :irked:
I have a small dolphin over a moon on the top of my lower arm. I don't like it because it is too cutesy. I got it way back in the day.
On the inside of my right forearm I have a native american style Raven. Raven is my daughter's name.
I have an ankle bracelet that is just black and a bit scrolly and has a tribal influence.
I think that's it :)
I have had a labret (sp?) peircing, but I am so horrible with any peircings healing. I had it for 6 months or so and then gave up and took it out. I also had a nose ring two different times. I had those for years and they still never healed. I say screw it, but I would like to have a dang perircing somewhere. I guess I'll stick with my 2 holes (one in each) in my ears.
Oh well.

I had an eyebrow piercing in college took it out a week later, pierced my left nipple and took it out before a trip to visit the in-laws, then pierce both nipples...stretched them up a few gages then took them out...they were too big for work...I got a little self-concious...now I want them back...and a few more tats...I was thinking a big surfboard lengthwise down my back...
I've removed most of my piercings too... want to get a couple in my ears redone and am thinking about a hoop in my nose again.
Still looking for the "right" antique compass rose for my first tattoo (forearm). Depending on that experience we'll see about some of my other ideas.

Who here is superstitous about putting names of loved ones on your body?
I'm one of them for sure.
My daughter's name is raven and I do have a Raven on my fore arm. I would never put her name on me though.

I used it to cover a tattoo I didn't like, which was a chinese character that was supposed to mean strength but instead turned out to mean "small rodent" (ya, you heard me) :irked:

I'm sorry, but this made me crack up!!! :duck:

[QUOTE=judejude]Who here is superstitous about putting names of loved ones on your body?
I'm not. One of my favorite tattoos is on the inside of my upper left arm. It is a heart with a banner with a old school swallow on top with a few flowers around the heart and on the banner it has my hubbie's name. It was by far the most painful area to get tattooed! :yikes: I love it though. I told my husband he had to get my name on his inner thigh so he would go through just as much pain as I did. :mischief Eventually I will try to think of a way to get all of our kid's names put on me or atleast a way to symbolize them. We have 2 girls now and plan on having more so who knows how many I'll have to get.:p Both our girl's were born on St. Patrick's day so I might get a shamrock or horseshoe something or other for them.

I've never had a tattoo on my inner arm or thigh, but I can't imagine anymore pain than the one I got on my...um...lower waist...it hurt way more than my 3 nipple piercing put together...*warning* its a little bit graffic so you might not want to click... New here!
I have three tats (one on each ankle and one on my upper right thigh) and two piercings (eyebrow and nipple). I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with nipple piercings and breastfeeding. Did the piercing hole close up quickly, or did you have any problems breastfeeding from that breast?
I finally designed my fourth tat, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get it (can you get a tat when you're pregnant?)

Welcome from another new person...
Don't know about breast feeding but my three closed up superfast seemed like overnight..might depend on the gage and how long you have had it...if I remember right mine were healed up in a few weeks and totally healed in a month...

Who here is superstitous about putting names of loved ones on your body?
I've avoided names, but have no problem with putting symbols for loved ones on my body.
DH and I have wedding tattoos: we each have a jellyfish done by a tattoo artist friend of ours as a gift. Jellyfish go way back in DH's and my relational mythology. There's no question that these tatts symbolize each other and what we have together. Neither of us wanted the other's name though.
I'm considering having a rowan tree done as my next tattoo, to symbolize my love for my daughter.
Not sure what my stigma against names is... I guess I think it makes the personal meaning too accessable to outsiders and cheapens the symbology in a way. My tatts are deeply personal, to the point where I have trouble talking about them when people ask me what they mean. Since putting them into words is really difficult for me, putting words into them makes no sense to me.
I really have no problem with others' tattoos of names though. In fact, I admire the bravery, the honest sentiment displayed in having them done.

I can't speak for the others, but it doesn't bother me to have a guy posting.:shrug I think a flaming half sun would work well, but that would require a lot of painful shading. I'm not sure I would do it completely above though, detached from the rest of the tat--I would join it together somehow, like rays coming off the letters somehow or something.

That's an interesting take there too. I've always just heard people say they thought it was bad luck to put names of loved ones on your body. FTR, that's not my experience as I've had my dh's name on mine for 14 years and we are still happily married.:D To be honest though, if I were to do it again, I probably would pick something symbolic and not just his name but at the time it didn't occur to me to be more creative. Also I would put it somehwere that it wouldn't have ended up with stretch marks through it.:lol

What do you mamas (and daddys) think about the mirror style ink on the front of your sholders kinda where your bra straps would be. Is that trendy? I like the fact that you can show them if you want or not. My grandmother passed just after I concieved my daughter and I was thinking about the circle of life (serpent biting its own tail) with a tropical flower on one side (my daughter was born in Florida) and a matching circle of life with a rose (my grandmother LOVED and grew roses) on the other side. Any thoughts? I have a fairly large tat on my lower lower abdomen and I would like to stay symetrical I think. I dont think I wanna do the whole lower back thing, I think it looks good but my husband call them "tramp stamps". Needless to say, he is ink-free.:o
SURFDADDY , you wanna be careful with sun or rays in general in that area of your body. Someone might think you intend to suggest the sun rises and sets over your crotch. HA!

eta: it's on this page (http://www.malutattoo.com/FAQ.htm), about 5 topics down i think....basically, shouldn't be a problem for the babe, but since your body is reduced immunity while pregnant, it can make healing worse, or lead to ink rejection, etc.

Three tats with plans for infinitely more. All kanji (all plans for kanji, I'm a themer). Green compassion on lower right abdomen (which has sadly died of stretchmarks and flub and must be removed, wah), blue love on left forearm, red courage on lower left back.
Used to have ears (still have one, other closed spontaneously after 20 years...it can happen!), lip, tragus, nose, nipple, and bellybutton piercings. All gone. May get nose re-pierced (for the 3rd time), but other than that no mas.

Caspians mama, I'll take some pics tomorrow! Is there anything in particular that you need/want? I've got kaos eyelets 6-00 gauge, a heap of nose screws and bones 22-18g, straight barbells, some claws 6-8g, 10 or 12g claws, some 14g tygon, 14g curved barbells, 4g pyrex spirals...a bunch of stuff!
SurfDaddy, I've got a ton of piercings :lol I currently have 5 lobe piercings, 1 ear cartilage, 1 nostril, 1 tongue, 1 navel and 1 vertical hood. I retired my nipple piercings when I was about 2 months prego-they were driving me nuts! Most of the excess jewelry comes from stretching my lobes. They are between 9/16th and 5/8ths of an inch at the moment. I think I want to go bigger, but I want to find some bitchin jewelry to put in 'em first :lol
Getting the barbell back in my navel wasn't too bad...I lubed up a 16g captive with some olive oil and it slid right in. After a few days I did the same to my favorite curved barbell and its as good as new!

schmaela, I'm surprised that you got your navel back. Mine was well over 8 months old and never healed, I took it out for a couple hours since it showed through the wedding dress and I retired it that day. I actually don't miss it because it always got in my way. How did the VCH do with childbirth?

My navel has been around for 5-6 years, I think thats why I got the jewelry back in. I don't think it was even completely healed by 8 months!
The hood was fine through childbirth, I took the barbell out right before I went to the hospital, and it went right back in a few days later (the doc recommended I take it out incase I needed a cesarian). As for the pain of the inital piercing-it was a sharp pinch. All of my other piercings except for my tongue hurt waaaaaay more. It was also the quickest to heal.

I have one tat on my right inner wrist that says "hope." I got it done over some scars from when I used to self-injure. I felt addicted and thought I'd always self-injure (over 5 years). But now I know you can stop so there's always hope (hence the fact it's a tat, not something temporary!)

I have my nose and belly button, along with 11 holes in my ears (three cartilege).

Great tat...especially with the meaning...a little off topic but regarding the self-injuring have you heard of DBT?

OoOo I wanna join!! I used to have a lot more piercings than I have now but I still have my ears, navel(took it out for my pregnancy thogh) and technically my tongue hasn't closed yet but I don't wear it anymore. I used to looove my nose piercing but got a weird infection or something..the skin literally grew OVER my piercing and I had to pop the skin to get the piercing out:sick I also had my labret pierced(was going for the old xtina look) but it totally made me look like a punk type chick and I'm totally girly girl:loveeyes: so it didn't mesh for me although I did like playing with it.
I only have one tattoo currently. It's on my lower back and is the symbol called AUM. I really liked how it felt getting the tattoo and I wouldn't say it hurt. I'm in the process of looking into my next tattoo but still undecided.

I don't know if this is already discussed somewhere in the thread, but what do you pierced mamas think about pre-teens getting piercings? I just have ears pierced but my son is asking for his eyebrow pierced. He's almost 12. He's very good about general hygiene stuff, more than most kids has age that I've known. What are the other concerns I should consider?
SleepyMamaBear

my personal stance on piercing is, if the child asks for it, can prove themselves cleanly, and responsible, and can earn the money for the piercing, jewlery and tip to the piercer, then they may be pierced.
however, no nipples, or genetalia before the age of 18.
and i would also talk to the child about how its body is still growing, and changing, and how their face will change as they grow. etc.
IMO eyebrow piercings are not that big of a deal, they do migrate alot tho, and are in my experience more of a temporary piercing (only a few years as opposed to a 10 year genital piercing, etc) and not anything to fret about.
when my daughter is old enough to ask for, pay for, and clean for her own piercings she will be allowed to pierce and stretch anything other than nipples and genitals, until she is 18. then again i know FANTASTIC piercers and body mod artists, so i dont have a worry about it being done in a shady shop yanno?
you might want to be the one that does the investigating and finding of the shop/s tho. at 12 he might be looking for cheapest, or closest, where as a parent you would be more likely to look for quality, experience, etc.
caspian's mama
08-27-2006, 05:08 PM
ditto that. i might add the tongue to the list of 18+, though. just like the nipples and genitals, it has the potential to be riskier than some of the other ones. jmho... :wink

Two tattoos (for now!) and only 2 remaining piercings, my earlobes.
I got my first tattoo and my nipple piercings within a month of getting to college (typical, eh?) :lol and my piercer was AMAZED that I was piercing my nipples first. I got lots of "wow...you're hardcore" comments. It was tons of fun while it lasted, which was about 3 years.
I got my second tattoo the summer after my freshman year.
The tattoo on my lower back (1st) is of a bouquet of snapdragons, which were my paternal grandfather's favorite flower, and a tribute to him. They're red, purple and light blue on pretty green stems. My hip tattoo (2nd) is of Healing Hands, and was drawn from my hands, which is really cool. Also glad it didn't stretch while pg with DD!
After this baby, I'll get another one to represent my kiddos...I'm going to get their birth flowers arranged in a bouquet, probably up at the top of my back between my shoulder blades. I have a thing for symmetry. :lol
Is tattooing dangerous during breastfeeding?
PancakeGoddess
08-27-2006, 06:36 PM
thanks, addys and caspian. What do I ask and look for specifically, when checking out a shop? My kid will have no say in where/who does it, but I think he could probably manage the physical care and expense, after he saves up.
Can you explain a little more about how the piercing migrates and what that means? It's a short-term thing because eventually it will just close up or be pushed out by the body? If he's not into ears or nose, would this be the next best choice for a young kid?
again, thanks a lot!

Sehbub, Here is a link that should help with your question on tattoos and breastfeeding. I am breastfeeding my 5 month old and itching for a tattoo myself. I waited to get another tattoo with my first daughter until she was 13 months old and only nursing 3 times a day. THis time around I probably won't wait as long- just until we can scrounge up some tattoo money. :wink Of course my husband is REALLY itching for another one so he'll probably get one first.

PancakeGoddess, migration is when a piercing is being rejected from the body. It tends to happen to surface piercings (including eyebrows), and navels the most. I would personally hold off on the eyebrow until your DS is a little older. He is still growing and I think that might hinder an eyebrow piercing. Other piercings like ears, nose, and maybe lips would be better.
When you are looking at shops, ask to see the autoclave and spore test results. If they can't show you either one of those-leave. Check to see that the shop is clean, well lit, and staffed by people who can answer your questions.
Finally, be sure to ask about the shop policies. Many shops won't work on anyone younger than 14, 16 or even 18 years old.

Oohhh -
Hope you don't mind if I jump in. ^^
I've got [currently] "18" piercings [although 12 of those are my ears, so I don't think that really "counts"]; other are located nipples x2, septum, lebret, navel, tongue.
Tattoos currently include two wrist pieces, two on my hips, one on my lower back, one on my left breast, one on my right shoulder-blade. I've done all my designs and have plans for at [i]least one more - my largest piece [which I've been designing for the past 5ish years. :lol] - a Phoenix that will start at my left thigh and work its way up to my armpit, with its wings spread under my [in the front] breast//shoulder-blade [in the back]. I'm excited. Just gotta get the design right. [;
As for piercings, I think I'm just about done with that. I haven't worn my jewelry since we conceived - and I don't honestly miss it all that much... except for my lebret. ^^
I'll be roaming this thread to see all of your ink! Very cool stuff. [:

Our dd, the toot, is 18 months now and is really fascinated by tattoos because of mine. One of my armbands is the parade scene from "Where The Wild Things Are", so she especially likes this one from reading the book. She says "tattoo" now and we have been buying her lots of temporary tattoos, which she generally puts in the same places I have mine. We think this is really, really cute. I'm interested in hearing other people's stories about their children at this age and their fascination with tattoos. This is one of the things I was really looking forward to with a child and it pleases me to no end! How do others feel? (I assume similarly since everyone here has a very positive/empowered attitude about body mod.)

My 2 yr old is OBSESSED with tattoos. It is so freaking adorable. Everytime he gets a hold of a pen he begs for his dad or I to give him a tattoo. Write now he has a sun like his daddy on his back and a skull with a banner that says "mamas boy" on his leg. And every one he meets he shows them. He walks up to strangers and says "Wewe tattoo" and holds out whichever tattoo is handiest for them to inspect :lol

my dh is covered from the neck down with tats and has 1/2inch labret, 1/2 sadhus, inch lobes, large uppers....it's her Papa and she thinks it the most normal thing. Both girls said "tattoo" as one of their first words. they have grown up and spend much time in dh's piercing studio. i love that tattoos and fine jewelry in not-so-mainstream places is "normal" to them. my 4 y.o. wants her labret pierced like papa, and when she draws pictures of the family she never forgets the large lobes and full sleeves. when she goes to work with my dh, she brings people water while they are on the piercing table, and tells them "it's okay...you should lie down..." if they get woosy.
we use rubber stamps and child-safe inkpads to do tatoos on them b/c i recently found out that the temporary tattoos have aluminum in them, which is what we avoid in anti-perspirant b/c it has been linked to alzheimers (sp?). marker are good choice, too.

I should be working here but I had to add my own funny kid-realted tattoo story. My two younger kids ( 9 and 6.5 y.o.) love to play tattoo parlor where we sit down with the markers and give each other "tattoos". Their favorite is for me to sit down and they ask me what I want done today and then they each take a leg and draw pretty much whatever they want all over my legs.:lol They work really hard and it is fun the things they come up with; I usually try and leave their art there for as long as I can. We play this game fairly frequently and about a month ago, I was all inked up in the afternoon and then a couple hours later needed to go to the grocery store. Forgetting that I had marker covering my legs from the knees down, I walked into the store in my shorts and didn't remember until people started staring at my legs.:lol I had "Led Zeppelin" written in big letters up the back of my right calf and I *heart* my kids on the other, suns and moons and random drawings and writings, flowers on my feet and my real tattoo on my ankle was all colored in in rainbow colors. It was hilarious!
So yeah, tattoos and piercings are considered very normal in our family. When they were younger they were super fascinated by tattoos and piercings, but now they aren't as enthralled unless it is new work.:lol My girls have their ears pierced (their choice when they were able to care for them) and my son (the 6.5 y.o.) has expressed curiosity about getting his ears pierced but hasn't actually asked and isn't ready yet. He does definitely want tattoos "when he grows up" though. Nobody has aksed yet for anything other than that first set of ear piercings. Wonder when that'll happen?
i recently found out that the temporary tattoos have aluminum in them
Thanks for that info! We rarely use them anyway, but I didn't know that. Good to know.:thumb

we went to a fair to try out different types of slings last year. someone had the foresight to set up a little face painting booth for the toddlers. casi completely monopolized it. after an hour or two, he was covered with face paint and tiny stamps. every time he got a new one he'd run over to show us, then head right back for more.
one evening i was cooking and he was being awfully well-behaved and quiet over in the corner. when i went to investigate later, he had scribbled with black ink all over his feet and shins. he also made a point to do each individual toenail- very thorough. :thumb

I like the stamp/ink pad idea. We also use markers, pens. While in a toy store here in Germany recently, we saw a play tattoo gun that uses some kind of ink to draw the pictures on. It has some templates, mostly of the tribal kind. Don't really think it is necessary to buy a special (plastic) toy, but I thought it was pretty cool and wonder if they sell them in the States.

while I'm not sure why, you are not supposed to get tattoos when you are pregnant, and I've heard that no reputable artist will tattoo a pregnant woman and sometimes even a nursing woman.

:yeah:
It has alot to do with the lymphatic and immune systems responses. Also the pigment in tattoo inks can run into the blood system in very much the same way antibotics can (and most doctors are very selective about giving pregnant women antibiotics for this same reason.) There is also a very real possibility of miscarriage. I strongly urge you to put this off until after you have given birth. It really isn't worth the risk. Every pregnancy is different and even if you had no issues with a past pregnancy and this matter before it does not mean that the risk involved lessens. :dizzy:

If there are moms who can link me to articles about the associated risks I would love to read them. the particulates that make the pigment in the inks can be transfered through the placenta, now for a grown human the pigments should be just fine, however there has been no testing (nor there should be) on the ill effects to fetus from these pigments. but the pigments do use metals like titanium oxide, and iron oxide. not something i would want to potentially harm my unborn child with.

Cool! That shading on the blue looks good (despite the flakiness!:D). The shading is what bothers me most too. Sounds like it might be worth trying benadryl when you go back for the rest.

the benadryl sounds like a good idea. mine did hurt the last time, but not crazily; it was alot to bear, but i was too focussed on not crying out loud, and it was just like a burning feeling. it wasn't excruciating. i HOPE it's worse than labour/birth, cos that means i'll get through that just fine.

Don't use lotion! A&D ointment is the best for them....yep the stuff you put on those babies behinds. From the website of the shop I got mine done at:
Your new tattoo will dry out around the third day. After gently cleaning your tattoo, pat dry and apply a small amount of A&D ointment.
--Scabbing is completely normal. It is your body's own defense mechanism meant to keep out bacteria while the new skin develops underneath. This is completely normal.
--Scabbing is not a sign of infection
--Do not pick or pull at scabs/skin flakes. This will pull out pigment from the new, under-developed skin.
--Healing time varies between 2-4 weeks.

I have a cross on my upper back, a magen avot on my left ankle, a Celtic trinity symbol on my left ankle, a burning bush design on my lower back, a butterfly on my right shoulder and a moon and stars on my left upper arm which will eventually (hopefully) become part of a naturescape half-sleeve with endangered animals on a tropical shoreline. I designed all of my tats, except for the moon and stars- since that is going to be a huge piece, I'm focusing on arranging the animals, the sky and the beach and letting an artist design the individual pieces. My goal is to have my half-sleeve completed by age 30. That gives me 5.5 years! :dizzy:
As for piercings, I have my right nostril, my septum and my labret pierced and my ears are stretched to a 2g. I had piercings all up my ears, but I took them out when I decided to up-gauge my bootom holes, and I have my bellybutton pierced, but I gained weight and got fairly unattractive, so I took it out.
I love reading this forum- its so interesting to hear what other people have inked on!

help! i got one of those nose stud piercings where they have the back and post in your nose and you can switch out the jewel, the post with the jewel goes in a hole in the post that stays in your nose... for a while it looked like my skin was trying to grow over the top of the outside, but with religious saltwater spraying, it calmed down and has been fine..
but when I went to get a new type of nosering today, they discovered that inside my nose, the skin had grown over my nosering.
I have to have it SURGICALLY removed.
WTF? *sigh*
Has anyone else dealt with this?
*giggle* I never saw this tribe before. I have 2 tattoos, but seeing as my brother's a tattoist (http://www.smilinricks.com/ian/ianmain.html), I doubt it will stop there.
I have sworn I won't get more, but I don't believe it. I think I'll save some space on my bod so that when my kids get old enough to want to get inked, we can go do it together.
I think I'll get my nose pierced when I'm done being pregnant.

Hi! I have 3 Tats and I think 14 peircings..... if you count my ears. I have a tribal across my chest a flame on my lower back and a black widow on my wrist. I want more tats, who else is with me? The only problem is that my Husband doesn't like Tattoos! :irked:

I'm new here & hope it is okay to just jump right in. Long time member, but never posted before now.
I have 24 piercings (lip, 2 in my nostril, tongue, 10 in each ear). I have a few that I need to have re-done (including my nipples after we wean) and have a few holes with nothing in them (like my septum). I also have 5 tattoos.
It surprises even me to count them all up!

Im with you, and my DH doesn't like them either. I find them incredibly sexy and meaningful, and my DH finds them weird and kinda gross... I hope to win him over though.
I have 4 tats atm, a moon and bouncing star on my right ankle I got done when I was 13, a celtic knot of life I got done over my heart when my mom died, a daisy losing a petal with my DHs name, that I am going to get altered, on my hip and a tribal sun on my neck/back I had done after my miscarriage.
I am atm drawing out my next tat, which will be a full backpiece with writing, pictures and fairy dust, to symbolize myself and my children. The tat I am going to get altered, what I had jeuvenilly done when I got engaged to DH, will focus on how I feel, and how I feel about him and our kids.
I had my nose pierced a couple of times, but since I am a heavy nose-sweatter and face toucher, I ripped it out a couple of times. I am planning on getting a labret soon though. Its the only area of my face I dont touch regularily..

No Not joking. Have never heard of any risks caused by tattooing during pregnancy. Am a little offended by the tone. I do not mind being educated, do mind being condescended too. If there are moms who can link me to articles about the associated risks I would love to read them. I have the desire for this tattoo for some personal reasons but will of course pu it off if there are risks. I am past the stage of miscarriage, so that would not be an issue in my case. Any kindly given advice is appreciated, snarkiness is not.
My first thought is, not while pregnant.
My second thought, I would think that the tat would be a tad disfigured put on a pg belly ad then "shrunk" down for a post pg belly.
You have a higher rejection rate for ink while pg and breastfeeding...gotta find a link....
