View Full Version : I'm new, where do all the Colorado moms live?

I'm new to MDC and live in Longmont...I was just wondering where everyone else lives. I have a 5 month old baby girl and gladly stopped working full time to be at home with her.
I plan on breastfeeding her as long as possible and it's my favorite part of being a mother! We (eventually baby) are vegetarian, unvaccinated, co-sleep, cloth diaper and make our own cloth wipes. It's so nice to talk to other like minded mamas-sometimes I don't have much in common with the Babycenter crowd. I look forward to swapping ideas with everyone!

My kiddos are much older though, 16, 9 and 7 next month. I do know of a homebirth lodge in Boulder run by two great midwives if you need to connect with some RL like-minded mamas of new babies. You can PM for contact details if interested.

Hi - I'm close by in Fort Collins! I'm new (1-day old) to MDC and still trying to figure it all out. I love the magazine; read it cover to cover.

My Son's name is Vitali, he's a 6-month old chunk of burnin' love (21 lbs)! I quit my career to stay at home and raise him. We're a breastfeeding, co-sleeping, organic eating nature lovin' family. I just moved back to FC from LA- I graduated from CSU and loved the area so much that when I found out I was pregnant there was no other place I wanted to raise my children than Colorado!

We're very new to this lifestyle- I was raised conventionally and my family still doesn't understand why I co-sleep, and they always ask "is he STILL breastfeeding?"! :irked:

I think this forum will give me the support I need!

hey all- my husband and i are pregnant with our first due 3/9. we are very excited to venture into the world of natural parenting.

one question: does colorado have diapering services? if not, what's the best way to clean cloth diapers?

also, is there a vegetarian alternative to lanolin for nipple soreness?

we're having a homebirth and are very excited to be in the comfort of our home!!!

thanks:

Hi!
I used a product called nipple cream from Mother's love. It's entirely food based (olive oil and calendula). Worked great! I also use it for diaper rashes and cuts on my hand. I dropped a mirror on my hand :dizzy: and it helped nicely with the healing process.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Did you check your yellow pages for a diaper service? According to http://www.diapernet.com/locate.htm#Colorado, there are a few in the state. They don't list one in Denver.

I wash ours at home. Aside from build up issues that I am currently working through, it's worked fine for us. Here's a decent starting place for how to wash at home: http://www.diapersafari.com/diaperinfo/washandcare/ If you peruse the CD boards anywhere, you'll find a lot of different methods and advice.

Good luck to you!

Hi, I live in Boulder (moving soon though). We have been going to the Parenting Place on Pine for 4 years now with my soon to be 5 yr old and my 18 month old. It isn't specifically for AP Moms but there are PLENTY who go.
PP is a non-prof and is open to everyone, regardless of income parenting styles etc...however, being in Boulder you are going to find a great majority of crunchy types there. We have found it to be a god send for us and have made lifelong friends there. We usually go on Monday mornings playgroup it is now for 0-5 since most of us have had our seconds or thirds and also have bigger kids. There are some mom's who come on the earlier side with just younger ones (10 am ish).
http://www.boulderparenting.org/
They have many other play groups there as well. It is a suggested $3 donation for attending a playgroup but if you like it the year membership is a better way to go (sliding scale).
Anyway, you should check it out if you don't mind the drive. It has been a fantastic experience for our family.

Peace, Kelly Jo

Colorado does have diaper services. Since you're in the SW suburbs, you might check out Earth Smart (http://www.earthsmartdiaperservice.com)(located in Longmont, but I think they service the entire Denver Metro area) or The Changing Table (http://www.thechangingtable.net) (in Boulder, but I think also servicing the Denver Metro area).

And I have a 1, 2, 5, 7, and 9yo. We've done cloth all the way through and I make my own.

I didn't notice where you were but there is a diaper service in the springs. With our excellent water it's easy to washat home. I line dry 99% of the time too and it works great. You can't beat the savings:)

I'm a WAHM to a 21 month old and pg with #2 due in March! DH works in Longmont, so we are there often :) We cloth diaper and make/wash our own, but know of two diaper services in the area and used one for the first couple months after ds was born. Nice meeting you!

I am new to Colorado and to MDC. I registered when we moved here, but haven't had any luck really getting around the boards. We live in Fort Morgan, NE of Denver about an hour. We have a 6 y/o son, 19 mo. old son, and 7 mo. old daughter. (hence the lack of computer time! :) )

I would love to get more involved with other AP moms as we are still sort of new to it all. Both DH and I were raised in traditional homes, and so we are new to it all. We co-sleep, bf, cd, eat organic as much as possible, and live as green as I know how (learn new things every day). Hope to get to know more of you.

Just wondering if anyone else ever drives around, amazed at our beautiful and vast vistas, all the while living in a confined subdivison, suburban existence? I sometimes really want to drive my car off the road!!!!!! However, I have dear, sweet children and won't endanger them. It's just a weird juxtaposition. We live with such vastness and at the same time, I feel hemmed in by big houses.
Not complaining, just thinking!

I am also brand spanking new to this board, searching for other mommies and mommies to be in CO who aren't afraid to buck the system or ask questions! I live in Greeley, am due in April with an anonymous-donor-inseminated-created creature, and intend to waterbirth, breastfeed, cosleep, cloth diaper, not circumsize (if that's the gender), raise a vegetarian family, have no t.v., and generally live a pacifist and cooperative life. Unfortunately, it seems as though I have to constantly defend my choices, as if by living naturally I'm somehow a "weirdo" to most of mainstream culture--at least locally, that is. So until I can be free from this stifling town, I'm hoping to find some pals through this option and have some good reasons to get out of town with the new person coming.

I can't find myself! My family (me, husband and kids) have slowely over the past years gone more and more natural and organic. The babes were cloth diapered, breastfeed and homemade baby food. Doctors are now holistic and our food as organic as we can get it in such a small town. Great to know their is other mom's around like me. Hi:

I'm about 10 minutes to Longmont. New to the board and each week becoming more involved in natural living. I'd like to connect with some moms as well. My DS is nearly 3 1/2. We moved here 3 years ago from the East Coast and I still feel like the odd gal out in materialistic suburbia. Most of my acquaintances have to go to Wal-Mart & Target weekly if not daily and will drive 1/2 to get there but think the 25 minute drive to Boulder to hike is insane :) Needless to say they think making my own yogurt is pretty crazy as well :wink

I'm in Colorado Springs. Nice to see some other moms from the Springs on here. This is my first post so not 100% sure what I'm doing. We are parents of a wonderful 16 mo old girl, who is a joy to us. We breastfed for 13 months, made our own baby food and cloth diaper. My husband (mainly) stayed home with her until she was 14 months (GREAT dad). We now are having to use daycare part time.
I have two questions:
1) Does anyone have any suggestions of how to find someone who would come to our home to watch our daughter during the week? I'd prefer that she be at home and I am trying to see if I can work from home, but would still have to have child care in the home. I'm lost as to how to find someone.

2) Does anyone know how to remove musty/mildewy smells from cloth diapers? We use Fuzzibunz and wash every other day, but have found we have started to get a mildewy kind of smell once they are on her and she wets in them. They are in a dry diaper pail.

Thanks so much!!!!

Welcome!
My DH was also a SAHD at first.
I don't know where to find childcare, but I have an odd suggestion for the smell. I have heard that you can use a spray bottle and vodka. Just the really cheap kind will work. I have been meaning to try it on some things that were in storage before we moved, so if I get around to it I'll let you know. (don't count on that though, I've been meaning to for almost 6 mos. now). Another option might be either vinegar or baking soda prior to washing. I am big on baking soda as a deodorizer and cleaner. Good luck!

Hi, I'm new to the board (3 days). I don't think I fit in yet. I'm a mama to noone YET. I'm getting married in 2 weeks. I currently live in Missouri but will be moving to CO (near durango) in April! My DF is a chiropractor and will be working there. We are currently very excited to have kids and doing nothing to prevent it *wink* and would love to have one soon. But I do know I do not want to vax, breastfeed and be as natural as I can. Even though I don't have kids yet I already have opposition from the family. But I just wanted to say hi and meet similar minds where I'm going to be raising my family.

Hi!

I live in Boulder. I have a 5 year old son, and 15 month old daughter, so our daughters are just about the same age. I was living in Longmont, but moved to Boulder in October.

I cloth diaper, eat naturally. I'm on a big green kick, clearing my house of yucky plastics. I'm taking a sewing class and am learning to sew clothes. hehe. I'm an artist, and just very creative. My son goes to preschool, this is his last year and then kindergarten. I want to homeschool, but my son is just the type who wants to be out on public, with other kids and teachers. Way different then me as a kid. I don't want to send him to expensive waldorf schools, because the parents choosing those schools seem wealthy and kind of stuck up, and just not crunchy and laid back. So I don't know what to do! Any suggestions?

Oh, and I'm SINGLE! :thumb And have been for a year now.

:wave Hi, I am in Boulder too! As for schools, if you are looking into public schools, you should take at look at BCSIS (http://schools.bvsd.org/bcsis/), it is a Waldorf inspired arts focus school. The kindergarten is very Waldorf, but in the upper grades less so. You need to open enroll (http://bvsd.org/C18/Open%20Enrollment/default.aspx) for the school and I believe the open enrollement process is already underway. If you are open to private schools, there are other options than just the two Waldorf schools, my DS goes to Eastern Sun Academy (http://www.easternsunacademy.org/) and we just love it, the kindergarten teacher, Nora Murray is outstanding.

I don't want to send him to expensive waldorf schools, because the parents choosing those schools seem wealthy and kind of stuck up, and just not crunchy and laid back.

Hi, we send our kids to Waldorf schools and we're very crunchy and not wealthy or stuck up. But we're new to Boulder and new to going to school---so just give me some time--maybe I can work on it!:rotflmao
Just kidding. But really I have only found the Waldorf(and all the CO) parents around here to be friendly.

I've also heard good things about BCSIS.

We had been hsers since the beginning and had been using the Enki curriculum (which I totally recommend if you end up hsing and looking for a holistic curric.) and I'd always heard things that there was a school using Enki as it's base, but I couldn't find it before we moved---maybe you'll have more luck. The schools around here do seem to be so great. We just moved from NJ and there are so few alternative schools back there--in comparison people here are so lucky.

I've also heard that there is a strong hs community here. Even with a very social child I don't think you need school to provide an outlet for him. We hs'd and were always doing activities, having playdates with other hsers, taking cool classes just for hs'd kids, and doing interesting things. Hsing is not just hanging out inside doing school alone. See if you can find a hs group and go and check them out---it might be a nice surprise.

I also have a son who is around the same age as yours. Ds is very social and loves to meet new kids to play with---if you ever want a playdate pm me. :)

melamama is correct, if you choose to homeschool, there are tons of options, from hs co-ops, park days, Options (a one day a week homeschool program), a two day a week Waldorf inspired homeschool group run a lady called Sage Holloway in north Boulder, the Living School, where my DD goes part-time, offers part-time unschooling also, for starters.

As for the Enki school, there isn't one that uses the Enki curriculum, melamama, but Eastern Sun Academy is based on the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and is the only contemplative elementary school in the country, it is developing a model for other schools to follow. It has also been named one of Oprah's Ambassador schools (whatever that is). There are a few hs mamas who are using Enki and were planning on doing an Enki group two days a week, but I don't know if that ever got off the ground.

I wasn't sure if BCSIS was using some Enki materials as well as being Waldorf-inspired.
Eastern Sun looks so great, I've been a practicing (and practicing) Buddhist for almost 20 years so it totally appeals to me.
I also thought I heard about some Enki mamas closer to Denver getting something together.

I'm in Longmont. We moved here about 4.5 years ago; we love it. I was born/raised in So CA, left CA in '89 for OK, moved to CO in '03. SOOOOOOOOOO glad we got here. I wanted to live here my whole life, so it's my dream come true.

I'm a retired LLL Leader, just busy w/kids now (6 of them, ages four through seventeen). My "baby" started PreK this past fall, and my oldest is a senior in high school. They're all into art, music, computers, gaming, and various other things. Hubby and I are big into reading, cooking, baking, being in the mountains, and trying to learn how to relax. ;)

I've been reading "Mothering" magazine since 1990; still have a subscription. It's fun to read articles online, and to connect w/other moms.

Hi all, we are newish to Denver and expecting our first in April. We are looking for recommendations for a doula to help support our unmedicated birth plan in a hospital setting, and for a natural-minded pediatrician. Am I in the right place for suggestions? Thanks much!

Hi! We are also in Firestone. It's just 15 minutes east of Longmont. I'm also looking for like-minded families in this area. Our son is 7 months old - what a wonderful age! We cloth-diaper, co-sleep, breastfeed, partial organic food, etc. As you can see by all the responses, there are a lot of us in this area. We need to look, ask, and probably look into the many groups in the area.

The only birth center in CO is Mountain Midwifery. I'm in FC too. There are plenty of options for homebirth midwives.

http://coloradomidwives.net/zc-80528.aspx for a list.

I'd recommend any of them. Lynette Chambers, Beth Karberg, Janelle Boyington are all great!

One thing great about this area is that there are many wonderful midwives. My midwife is in Parker, so that wouldn't help you. I'm sure that if you found a local LLL group and started asking around, you could get a ton of suggestions! :thumb

Turbosab, The birth center that was mentioned is an excellent birthing center. I birthed my 2nd daughter there in January and it was an amazing experiance. I would do it all over again! The crappiest part was the long drive from Colo. Springs, but it was well worth it. The CNM's and nurses are very hands-off and the care they give during prenatal appts., during labor and birth, and post-pardum is outstanding! I highly recommend them.

I lived in Colorado for a lot of my younger years and nearly all of my family lives there. I lived in Pueblo, Beulah, Commerce City, Georgetown. We're going this week to Moab and taking I-70 and am excited to go see the mountains again! My Grandfather lives up near Delta, so I want to see him and my Mom grew up in Summity County and I'd like to see some of the places she lived. After that we're going to go down to Pueblo to see my Grandmother and a bunch of old friends and family that live there. I never liked Pueblo much, but I love my family there. ;) The mountains of Colorado are amazing though. So so beautiful. I really want to get up to see Bishops Castle! :thumb

Colorado is somewhere I always want to go when I visit the US. :)

Hi Colorado mamas! I am in AZ but we are deciding on a move...Fort Collins is at the top of our lists but I have never been there...only research and what others have said. Can you guys offer any feedback on the area? We have 2 children, one of which is autistic...it is really important to me that he has the available resources in CO that he has here in AZ (Occupational Therapy, Speech, Physical Therapy, Music Therapy...) We are looking into Riversong, but are unable to see the fee schedule...anyone familiar with that, please let meknow! My email off board is shanjen1@yahoo.com. Thanks so much!!!

Hi Everyone, I just registered with MDC a few days ago and have been reading Mothering for almost a year. Love it! Dh and I are expecting our first in April. We are planning on bf, co-sleeping, and I already started making cloth diapers. We are not going to circumcise (if it's a boy) and will do selective delayed vaccination. I would love to meet other like minded Moms in the Leadville area (BV, Salida, Summit county, Eagle county, etc.). We are still trying to pick a midwife and have found Julia Fritz in Salida. I would like to hear some opinions if anyone knows of her as a midwife. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can.:joy:

Hi, we'll be moving to Denver in a few months, and I need help! I'm hsing my 6 year old, have a two year old, and am expecting boy number 3 in May. Info that would help me greatly would be:

homeschooling groups

A good midwife/OB who'd be willing to take a woman at 6 months pregnant as a new patient

a pediatrician who'd be willing to delay vax

those are the top three, I guess, but I also need lots of specialist info (we're special people, what can i say)

pediatric gastroenterologist

colo-rectal surgeon

an inner ear specialist

and dentists for kids and adults.

I'm just throwing this out there. I don't even know where to start. my husband is losing his job next month, we're desperately trying to sell our house, and as I mentioned I'm pregnant and mothering. Life, I guess, but anything anybody can suggest would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.
