View Full Version : Punkie punk punk
I noticed the thread on progressive 80's music and was wondering if there were any fellow punksters out there? I got some Dead Kennedys on vinyl............. some Social D maybe or some Misfits??? Any takers? Moshing optional but pogoing is encouraged.
Ms. Mom 05-08-2003, 08:25 PM I'm game! No moshing for me - I'm only 5 foot tall and I tend to get squashed!
How about some Sex Pistols? Not very creative tonight, but it does the trick when you're feeling naughty:D
mamapixie 05-08-2003, 09:19 PM *raising hand* Even at 5'1, I ventured into the mosh pit occassionally(it helped that I only did it when DH's brother was on stage, so if I was having a problem, I could jump onstage and get away). And Sex Pistols are great for classic punk(is there even such a thing? LOL)same with The Ramones. Um, let's see, Rancid, some of the neo-punk stuff(Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41, etc...)isn't too bad.
Ms. Mom 05-09-2003, 08:02 AM LOL ds LOVES Sum 41!
Yeah, I think there's a 'Classic Punk'. Some of the new stuff is more machine generated than the old thrashy, raw stuff.
mamapixie 05-09-2003, 08:46 AM Ben loves Blink 182 and Green Day, and has since he was a toddler!! We're so afraid that when he gets older, he'll rebel with his musical style, and get into dance music :gross or something like that.

Aaahhh, same here. If only I actually LIKED bands who were against moshing as it is an act of violence (in their opinion, Fugazi, for example), then I would be safe! Ian MacKaye is a great talent, though. Even with the big turnaround he did from Minor Threat to Fugazi.
Black Flag anyone?
My DP LOVES and had always loved 7Seconds and the Descendents, though he finds that growing up has strained how passionately he feels their music.
When I was younger I used to be into (classic) punk for the message that some bands preached (the good messages, not the sex drugs n' rock n' roll ;) )...now I find I just love the sound. I love it HARD, FAST and with lots of YELLING! When the music makes me want to scream, present my middle finger while pogo'ing away, I'm there!
.....and, yes, I love Blink 182. What can I say - they're catchy and fun!
bionicsquirrel 05-09-2003, 11:56 AM I was/am more of a Nations of Ulysses, Bikini Kill punk, but I did see the Vandals play back in the day and for all you PNW punks, who could forget The Wipers. I'm glad there is such a variety of moms here.
I just made t-shirts that say
Punk= Function over Fashion
and
Punk is a Mom in Jeans and a T-shirt.
ainsleyx 05-09-2003, 12:49 PM Social Distortion, Fear, The Vandals, The Ramones, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedy's,NOFX........all of these have found their way into my car stereo lately. I think I'm reliving my childhood!:D

That is ALL I wear, very occasionally I'll put a nice shirt on, or a dress, but it's rare.
Oh yeah, and usually on my feet is a pair of athletic shoes, Converse all-stars, or Airwalks(I need a new pair though, but I want the old style, and I can't find them anywhere)
mmmmmmmm Black Flag and Bikini Kill. Dd is becoming quite the fan of the Ramones but not so much with the Clash.
My last mosh pit experience was not so good. I am all of 5 ft 1 myself and this brick wall of a chicka introduced her steele toe to my nose. *Ouch* Well Suicidal Tendencies sound better at the back of the venue anyway.
mamapixie 05-09-2003, 02:03 PM Okay, I'm seeing a trend here, short punksters! LOL I only ever moshed at small clubs, and then, like I said, when DH's brother was on stage so I could save myself.
When I went to a Violent Femmes concert, at a civic center(it was during their Viva La Wisconsin tour, they were nice enough to come to Fargo for that tour) there was a mosh pit!! Weirded the group out, Gordon even made a few comments about it.
I'm realizing thru reading here that I really need to find some of these groups CD's again...I had most of them at one time(Dead Milkmen, Descendants, Fugazi) but they've disappeared over the years.

But, he's sweet and has a gentle soul :love. He thinks its great that his momma was wild at one time and LOVES my music! Recently, he stole my Ministry CD's and took them it to his guitar teacher so he could learn to play Theives and Burnin':eek.
However, he REALLY likes Justin Timberlake:huh I keep telling myself "be nice, he has his own taste, it's OK, remember how you felt when your mother put YOUR music down".
Well, I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls, so, go figure:jaw The recent mixed CD I burned has Ministry, Bauhause, Sex Pistols, Goo Goo Dolls, Mission UK, Ann Clark, The Dead Milkmen, Skinny Puppy, The Smiths, The Cure, Caberet Voltair, Beastie Boys and Cocteau Twins - now if that isn't messed up :bouncy
Gosh I miss Simonee when we talk music :( Settle in soon Simonee - I miss you :crying
bionicsquirrel 05-09-2003, 02:54 PM Oh, I forgot about Fugazi and how much I love them. The best part is that All my favorite bands are becoming parents too and writing music about it. All these years and I can still relate to them.
Dh and I always joke about ds growing up and being in a boy band. We'll have to go to his shows and cheer him on and look at his picture on the front of Teen Beat Mag.
Hilary Briss 05-09-2003, 03:50 PM Marg and I were into punk in the early to mid 1980's. We were the first punk wedding in Madison, and, as far as I know, have outlasted all of the punkers that got married after us.
I've seen a few punk bands listed above, and plenty of non-punk bands mentioned too; however, I think I've outgrown screaming "poseur" at all of the wannabes, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.
I like to believe that my punk roots helped make me what I am today... which may help explain why I rub so many people the wrong way. :D In fact, whenever someone here mentions "MDC", I always think for a split-second of that great early 80' hardcore band Millions of Dead Cops, that later morphed into Multi Death Corporations.
Ms. Mom 05-10-2003, 07:02 AM OMG!!! Hilary Briss, you got me thinking.
I went downstairs and dug through my old vinyl collection. I TOTALLY forgot I had some of this stuff!!! Alien Sex Fiend, Revolting Cox, Skinny Puppy, The Dammed, Sex Pistols, Vicious Pink, Dead Kennedy's. I've GOT to get this stuff to CD!!! I'm so excited!!
I took a small stack up to show to ds and he wants to hear it ALL. I broke out into "God Save the Queen" and he laughed and said "you remember all that stuff?" :LOL Ok, I'm going to corrupt my child.
Why do I now have the urge to spike my hair and wear army boots? :scratch
Hilary Briss 05-10-2003, 08:41 PM I was at a bookstore tonight, and I saw a guy wearing a coat with a Rudimentary Peni design on the back. For those of you that don't know, RP was an extremely political English punk band, kind of like Crass, from about 20 years ago. I was impressed that anyone still knows about them.
Revolting cocks!!!!!!! Man, I have to go back to Vegas and get my records back from my parents. I am seriously in need. I am torn on the punk or not so punk issue........ I came to the lifestyle in the 90s and was influenced mainly by the Dks and Bad Religion and grew from there but I have a hard time with Blink 182 or Good Charolette or Avril Levigne (sp?)..... don't remember where I was going with that I shall return to it later.
Ms. Mom 05-11-2003, 03:38 PM HB - Rudimentary Peni dosn't ring a bell? Now I'm going to have to go searching!
I actually never considered Blink 182, Sum 41 or Good Charlot to be Punk. I always think back to the older stuff (guess I'm showing my age:rolleyes: ).
Avril Leveign? Punk? Really? My son loves her. I don't find her totally annoying, so she's ok. Now Missy Elliot is giving my head a pounding! But, I refuse to say anything. I keep remembering how my parents insulted my taste in music.
Yeah, ds keeps saying "can we play that song by the Revolting 'word I can't say'"? :LOL
I consider Ministry and Revolting Cocks more Industrial than Punk, but I like it non-the-less! Alaen Jeorgonson writes amazing lyrics! There was another band he had, what was that one again? Now I've got to look it up.
Hilary Briss 05-11-2003, 06:59 PM Actually, I did a search on Rudimentary Peni, and found out that they did put some records out in the mid 90's, so it's not quite a stretch to see someone wearing a jacket with their artwork on it.
I always really liked "Foetus", as in Scraping Foetus off the Wheel, and You've got Foetus on your Breath. I never considered Foetus to be punk, per se, but it's pretty wild stuff, and got progressively rawer as he went on. Any other Foetus fans here?
bionicsquirrel 05-11-2003, 10:32 PM My crowd always considered Rudimentary Peni and Foetus to be "Crust Punk" as in Crusty Punks/Gutter Punks. The bands Filth, Blatz and Naked Aggression fall in that category too. Politically motivated punk.
This is making me think of all the great Hard Core bands I listened to when I was in highschool. Anyone here an old Man is the Bastard fan? Or Rorshach? I miss being a punker, but I don't miss dumpster diving and hitchhiking. I like where I am now and I never want to be a teenager again.
Avril Lavigne is NOT punk. She is the new generation of Mtv rebel teen marketing. This is like when RollingStone magazine put a picture of Green Day on the cover and titled it "The Year Punk Broke". That was the end true, underground punk. Now punk can be purchased as a look at the mall. You don't have to have the punk spirit to look the punk part, kwim?
GothicWiccan 05-13-2003, 08:31 PM I LOVE punk! I just got 3 tickets to the Good Charolette and Newfound Glory concert for my B-day. True...GC isn't exactly true punk, but their close enough. And Bionic-I agree! Avril is TOTALLY NOT PUNK! She can fake it, but try as she might, she is still a little pop princess:shake
-Sky:nut
The Cramps are coming here next week............ I have been in a mama haze or something; I didn't even know they were still touring.
ainsleyx 05-14-2003, 10:52 AM I had tickets to go see them Sunday night(supposed to be my Mother's Day present), but I was sick and couldn't go.:crying

we live the life everyday.
the 7inches never get dusty.
i am all about youth brigade, dag nasty, op ivy, nofx (oh my their new war on terror one kicks a$$), pnk lincolns, pennywise, nobodys, parasites, vindictives, weazel, dropkick murpheys, lars fred and bastards, jugheads revenge, pinhead gunpowder, queers, face to face, propaghandi, guttermouth, sloppy seconds, afi, tsol, bouncing souls, subhumans, lagwagon, vandals, and soooooooo many more.
that said, I am the pert looking mom in my capris and sandals.
;)
whateverdidiwants 05-15-2003, 09:29 AM Another punk mama checking in. It's been a while since I was in a mosh pit, but that's ok. I catch myself singing "Punk Rock Girl" to my 13 month dd all the time and buying her kick-ass baby clothes from Dookiewear. I particularly love the sweats that say "Anarchy in the Pre-K". :D
Favorites are NOFX, Descendents, Screeching Weasel, Propagandhi, Bad Religion, Tilt, Lagwagon, Big Drill Car. Just dusted off my Hagfish CDs a few days ago as well.
I can give or take all of the new corporate pop-punk stuff. Sure t's catchy, but there's still that little voice in my head saying "this is so fricking commericialized! Those darn kids today have everything handed to them. No more getting copies of copies of copies of tapes from friends or camping out overnight for tickets. I can't imagine seeing a punk band play in an arena. It's just WRONG!":
:OT My little beastie has some stuff from Dookiewear as well...... we got her a "My mother wears combat boots" shirt and an "Already a feminist" one as well. I heart that site.
And oh yeah Ms. Mom........ I would have been at the show no matter what strange things my body was doing. But these days not so much.
ainsleyx 05-15-2003, 10:21 AM But these days not so much
Ahh, the good old days....I think I would've gone if I would have the opportunity to sleep it off the next day, but a Sunday night show id "iffy" to start with.:zzz
Mothernature 05-16-2003, 06:24 AM How did I miss this thread? I never really considered Dag Nasty punk, but I get the point. Anyone remember Pitbulls on Crack or NOTA? I noticed some skinhead music listed here... Was it Mssisko that mentioned Minor Threat (I know not really skin head because they were not biggots and they had an anti-drug message.)
I remember in the 9th grade the movie Sid and Nancy came out and my best friend and I got my dad to tell the movie theater worker we had permission to watch it (he was a little miffed later.) We later rented it more than I care to admit. Gary Oldman made a great Sid Vicious. I used to try to dress like that and once I died my spiky hair hot pink with coolaid (again Dad was pissed.)
:LOL I did the kool aid treatment once.. smelled like fruit punch for a week.:LOL

I remember in the 9th grade the movie Sid and Nancy came out :eek I'm so OLD!!! I was in COLLEGE!!! We went to see it at some artsy fartsy movie house and I was so depressed afterword I made my friends take me home. Yeah, Gary Oldman was REALLY good at blowing snot vomit out his nose (now where's that Icky smilie:scratch ):gross
Food coloring was interesting- it NEVER came out! And Rit Dye dried my hair out really bad - KoolAid was fun!
I found a pair of 0-6 months pants at a garage sale, they were black and had skulls on them. I used to put them on the kiddies all the time with a white or black t-shirt. Oh, the comments I got! Funny, both the kids are REALLY into skulls and punk-like stuff.
Dd draws pictures for ds's guitar teacher every week and this week he came out and gave her a sucker - SHAPED LIKE A SKULL! She said "mom, how did he know I love Skulls?" :LOL Only my kids...
I am not going to say how old I was when Sid and Nancy came out but I also dug SLC Punk. Cool movie with a seriously kick ass soundtrack.
My little woman wants me to dye her hair red......... what to do what to do?
Ms. Mom 05-17-2003, 03:23 PM Go for it! Get some Manic Panic and go for it!
sadie_sabot 05-20-2003, 01:08 AM OMG!!! the Dead Milkmen!!! For some unknown reason, the song watching scotty die has been going through my head for seriously months!!! "I've got a kid his name is scott, he's going blind and his blood just will not clot..." I have to stop myself from singing it to my babe.
We still listen to a bit of punk around here but we're all into political punk. Current fave is Submission Hold from Canada, they are so good, and thier politics are so good, and they're really nice, and two of them just had a baby...
(edited to correct some embarassing spelling)
I am going to go ahead with River's hair and hope that no one calls child services.

LoL - my mamushka dyed my hair bright red for me while I was still in grammar school (6or7 maybe?). When I was 13 I dyed my hair purple and my father was ticked. So my mom took what was left in the bottle and put it on the grey streaks she had that were right around her face. My dad couldn't say anything about it anymore and I was off the hook! My mother is my angel! :love Your babe will some day worship you like I do my mother (not just for the hair though ;) )!
I'm still a huge Op Ivy fan. Lately Dh and I have been listening to a lot of Dropkick Murphys, Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Rancid, the Business, and the Clash.
I was a punk in high school, but in college got really into hip-hop (still love the Wu Tang) and techno. But now Dh and I think that both of those genres have gotten kind of stagnant, so we started listening to punk again.
When our cat was still a kitten, we used to trim his hair into a tiny mohawk and dye it with Kool-aid. He was so cute then.
I haven't found much 'newer' punk that I like, though. The Distillers aren't too bad.
Mamapixie: Did you go to the Violent Femmes in Fargo, ND? I went to that concert.
mamapixie 05-21-2003, 12:45 PM Yep, that's the one I went too! DH and I were both so excited that a decent band was coming to Fargo, there was no way we would've missed that concert.
I really need to go buy "Viva La Wisconsin" again, I still can't believe someone stole it out of DH's car.
I sprayed her hair green when she was one for Halloween and it stayed that way for a good two months.LOL I got some interesting looks from that lemmetellya.
Ms. Sisko..... I totally understand. My dp and I were just talking about my mom last night. You see, in the environment I grew up in everybody was modified in some way or another so I didn't even know it was supposed to be a fringe thing until I was a teenager. (by then it was all the rage and made me wonder what life must have been like for my mom) Just thought I would shar. Sounds like our moms could go bowling together. ;)
A friend's husband saw a really cute long sleeve black infant tee shirt and got it for us because "they're the only ones who'll get it!
It says (in the same typeface as God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols) "Anarchy in the Pre-K"
:D

ainsleyx 05-23-2003, 10:58 AM :crying Why couldn't I find such cool apparel when mine were little? They're 10 and 5, now. Oh well, those ages have their own advantages.:D
Okay I have decided that you guys rock... party at my house. I will provide the PBRs. ;)
Ms. Sisko 05-23-2003, 11:08 AM :jammin
ainsleyx 05-23-2003, 11:28 AM I will provide the PBRs.
I'll be happy to help you drink them! It sucks that most of the people I'd love to hang out with our on the west coast though!:p :D
Is anyone else in love with the movie SLC Punk? I totally heart what the character Brandy has to say about the "punk" uniform.
mamapixie 06-03-2003, 07:35 PM Speaking of punk clothes, I'm getting Jonny a couple of these http://stink-bombs.netfirms.com/stinkbombs_002.htm, DH has requested the Anarchy one, and I'm going to get the Alien baby, and punk smiley too.
He's also got a pair of Converse all-stars just waiting for him to need a size 5.
