I am contemplating starting clomid. The only thing I am really really concerned with is how it will mess with my emotions.
I get severe PMS (moodiness) will clomid make my moodiness worse??
Is that one of the side effects?

First month...nothing.
Second Month...Crazy crazy
Third month....a little moody.
All of these onlly during the time I was taking the meds.
And the hot flashes were MAJOR!!!!!
I have problems on the birth control pill....and I figured I would have problems with Clomid. It think that is the case for a lot of people.
As for PMS,
First month....boobs started hurting immediately after O....no other noticeabley worse PMS.
Second month....Nothing really...sore boobs about a week before perriod.
third month...Nothing so far and af is due on Friday!

I was on 3 cycles of it--50mg, 100mg, and 150mg. I didn't O during any of those cycles. The only side effects that I had from the first 2 cycles was headaches. With the 150mg cycle, I also had an HCG trigger and progesterone supplements. That was a weird cycle for me because I just knew that I was pg. I wasn't, but it really messed with my emotions, especially when it caused AF to be one week late.
I'm not real sure if PMS symtoms are a side effect, but I guess it's possible. Pg symtoms can also be similar to PMS. It affects people differently. Just do some research to see if it's right for you. Good luck with your decision.

I took clomid 50 mg for two cycles a year ago. I had every possible symptom--including twins!!--and felt absolutely insane while taking it. Supposedly, there is only a 5% chance of most of the symptoms. The headaches, hot flashes, and emotional aspects were the worst for me. I was like a different person and it was horrible. The first few months of pregnancy were *nothing* compared to the hormonal changes clomid brought out in me. BUT, it worked! I got pg! And I have two beautiful babies whom I most likely would not have if it weren't for clomid.
Here is a quote from "The Essential Guide to Lesbian Conception, Pregnancy, and Birth:"
Each woman responds differently to the drug. Although some women don't experience mood shifts when taking clomiphene, many experience depression, uncontrollable rage, paranoia, and hysterical crying. These common side effects are usually downplayed, if mentioned at all, when clomiphene is prescribed.
I had all of the above mentioned.
Good luck!

i just started my third cycle...first was 50mg, second was 100mg, this one is 150mg.
overall, i have had LESS side effects than i expected--especially less emotional side effects. my biggest complaint is that i get a headache right after i take my dose. also, i wake up every night i am taking clomid with at least one night sweat.
i am hoping this one will be the cycle for me, though...the side effects will seem so insignificant if i can conceive.

Ask your doctor what effect it will have on your unborn child.
There is evidence that clomid can cause infertility in a female child that will obviously not show up for another generation, similar to the DES adenosis and abnormalities of the reproductive tract that appeared in the 1960's-1970's in daughters of mothers who were given DES in the 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, to 1971.
The sons of these DES mothers had cancerous tumors in their testicles.
Check the prescribing information. Clomid has been around for a long time, and there should be studies with information about second generation problems available.
Unless of course the doctors do not care.

applejuice, can you give me any references? I did a search on Clomid and found nothing that talked about infertility in daughters conceived on Clomid. I checked the insert that came with my prescription, but it also said nothing about it.
Thanks!

I had no side effects on clomid... i was on it for 2 cycles...
Applejuice, are you referring to a child in utero when the mother takes clomid?

I was definatly more touchy, but I am not sure if it is because of Clomid *persay*, or the fact that I was so emotional over the IF and knowing there is a time limit on Clomid (although I was on it for double the recommended time, if I remember right)
My worst symptom, which I haven't really seen mentioned, was extreme nausousness (sp?). I literally threw up almost every day of the month the entire time I took it...completely overwhelmed by smells. Frankly, it was worse than morning sickeness for me.

I only did one cycle but didn't have any mood swing issues. And I was fully expecting them with my temperment & history of depression.

I did one cycle, and got pregnant right away. I did have crazy hot flashes after I finished the Clomid, but it was all worth it because I have a lovely 3-year-old.

CLOMID IS VERY SAFE.
You don't actually take clomid while you are pregnant, only at the beginning of the cycle. Taking clomid during pregnany is a bad idea, and it is most likely teratogenic (causing birth defects) in that case, but our doctors should rule out pregnancy before allowing clomid to start. Taking clomid before pregnancy (the way it is prescribed to us) is safe.
Clomid has been in use for at least 35 years. I think that is enough time to see any ill effects in daughters of clomid users. I have not been able to find any evidence in the medical literature for this. Applejuice, I find your tone about doctors not caring very unnecessary. Many of us have wonderful doctors who do care very much about their patients. If there are not enough studies done, I would blame the Bush administration for slashing NIH funding (which pays for those kinds of studies).
Clomid acts on estrogen receptors in your body (and the fetus's body if you are pregnant). However, the estrogen receptors necessary for interaction with clomid are not present until the fetal stage of pregnancy (56 days post-conception) (Cunha et al., 1987)
applejuice, I think it was really irresponsible of you to make that kind of statement without any references or any evidence. Please let us know where you are getting your information, ok? Those of us dealing with infertility have enough worries without having totally unfounded suggestions and claims of birth defects thrown at us.
