Got a midwife!

I have my first appt. in March. So, what should I know? What will happen, what should I ask?

So right after I heard from them, I had an already-scheduled appt. with my fam. doc. just to confirm, and maybe get a referral to my OB if I needed it -- I told them on the phone when I made the appt. I wanted a pregnancy test. I showed up a few minutes early, hoping I could be in and out quicker if she happened to be free. Wrong! I waited until 1/2 hour after my original appt. then finally said to the receptionsist, I can't wait any longer, I have to go pick up my son at daycare. So she says, why are you here -- oh, a pregnancy test? I didn't know that, here's a bottle, give us a sample and we'll know in a minute. I could have peed in a bottle a half hour earlier and been at the daycare already! GRRRR!

So by the time I came back from the bathroom, the doc was free so she did the test (which was positive of course), asked if I wanted to see the same OB, and I explained I was going the midwife route. So really, I didn't need to be there at all, and it cost me $9 in parking to see the doc for less than 5 minutes!

In my experience, they will have you pee on a strip to find out how much... uh... protein? sugar? I think sugar... is in your urine and weigh yourself. The first appointment is 45 mins to an hour; they go over your medical history, past pgs and labour/births, ask if you want home or hospital, and talk about the kind of care you want to receive during pg and during labour. I don't remember if they do blood work at that appointment or not, and I don't think they ask about scheduling an ultrasound yet, either. So if you have any questions or concerns, this is a great appointment to bring them up, since it will be the longest. Oh, they talk about nutrition, too, I think.

I am interviewing my midwife today! I am so excited!

I am glad you have found a midwife. We have such typical dr's around here. I used the same ob for my dd's and it was not my idea of good care. I think the midwife will be great.
