Ok, I have little experience with slings. I have a maya ring sling. I do like it, but neither of my boys liked it much, other than to nap when we were out. It just never felt very comfortable. I'd love to look into other styles. Since I have to little to buy this time around, I think I could sneak in some sling money :lol

Someone mentioned a polor fleece one? Is that just warm and fuzzy, or are there other reasons for the fleece?

What other ones do you guys like?

kangaroo korner adjustable fleece is by far my (and DH) favorite! DS still will take it to bed with him (he's almost 4)!

Super warm, cuddly...Im going to have to get another one for this babe!

Okay, I think a fleece sling would just be way too hot here. So, I'm good with my monkeybums sling. :) My son totally loved it!

I'll probably get a Moby Wrap or a Gypsy Mama Wrap for this babe. :wink

Wraps are best for newborns, imo. They are soooo comfy for the mama and the baby is kinda snuggled and swaddled in there. I don't think I've put a wrap on a mama with a newborn that did not end up getting it.

I have a New Native Sling that I like. I have a Moby Wrap that I LOVE! It's so nice to have the weight distributed over both shoulders instead of one, and I feel like they are much more secure in there.

Check out http://www.peppermint.com/

Lindsey - never seen the both shoulders one - looks cool though.

Moby Wrap -- I have seen these and i THINK I want one.............

1. how easy is it to get on and off -- looks COMPLEX

2. how long can you wear it, i assume it is too strechy for a tot? I think i heard a mom at our birth class reunion comment on that, it streches too much with her DD in it now ---- not THAT it matters, it would be a while

3. they LOOK like you could wear them in water -- yes or no?

Aimee - that "how complex" to get on and off concerned me too. I think I'll go down to the local retailer later and check it out in person. That should be able to help. Also, I read on one website that it's good for up to 35 lbs. Then one of them can even accommodate twins.

Moby Wraps are great for all ages, but they tend to stretch out as the baby gets heavier. I switch to woven wraps (like Didymos) when they get hefty.

My favorite newborn sling is the Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch (a.k.a. KKAFP). It's so snuggly. I even wear it in the summer, in air conditioning or in the shade. It's super supportive.

I have a ton of slings, lots of different types, so if anyone has a question, just ask!

Check out TheBabyWearer.com (http://www.thebabywearer.com/) for tons of info and friendly, helpful people!

Wraps do have a bit of a learning curve, but it's not that hard. The moby wrap website has instructions on it for different carries.

The moby wrap isn't made for water.

My DD is 21 pounds (peanut) and I still wear her in it. Not too stretched out at all. I agree with a PP in that a knitted wrap would probably be better for when they are heavier, though.

I think I want to try a moby wrap type one but I would like to make my own to save money anyone know of a site with free directions on making one? I just learned to make ring sling and I love these too. They are no stores in my area that sell this kind of stuff.

I'm a carrier addict and have tried just about everything that's out there :lol

I think a stretchy wrap (such as Moby, HotMama) is fantastic for a newborn, and though there is a learning curve, it's a minor hurdle with MAJOR benefits.

I teach babywearing classes and lead a local NINO group so I'm happy to answer questions about specific brands!

I second the recommendation for thebabywearer.com It's my "home" on the web and is full of the nicest, most helpful people and TONS of pictures of every sling imaginable, including tips on making your own.

Also, Attached To Baby (http://store.attachedtobaby.com/) has a fantastic selection.

Can I come visit??? I'd love to be somewhere where its too hot for fleece!!

Today it was in the single digits for a high, below zero with windchill. Horrid. And we had to go out!!

I've used my Hotsling since dd2 was one week old. She layed in the pouch and I could go everywhere with her and she was snug and contented next to me. I've traveled by plane with her in it. Sometimes they made me take her out going through security but not always. She is now 27 mos old and I still use it to hip carry her in stores, etc. SHe likes to be up high to see whats going on and and she falls asleep when she needs to.
Needless to say, I would HIGHLY recommend a hotslings.

according to TSA this just changed -- legally -- by TSA regs -- you NO LONGER have to remove a child from a SOFT carrier to go though security.

My OTSBH has plastic rings, so i don't have to take it off now......

which is soooooooooooooo nice ......

(this is, of course, untill something else happnes -- and can change at anytime :) )

I second wishing to be where its to warm. Our high today was 9, this is just crazy

Another question. Does the Moby get warm easily? I overheat really easily, and so far our boys have also. Looking at it, it looks like there would be layers over baby, so I'm just wondering. Thanks, back to looking at all the links :p

There are lots of different weights of stretchy wraps- Most, like the Moby, hug-a-bub, etc are similar to t-shirt material. There are different ways to tie them so that there are fewer layers. One of my favorite features of a wrap is that if you are just hanging out around the house, there's no need for a shirt! ;) Baby is skin to skin, easy BFing, and you are covered in case someone rings the doorbell :D

The HotMama (http://hyenacart.com/momandmecreations/index.php?c=9) wraps are a little heavier weight but they are beyond gorgeous and so comfortable. And WAHM made :D

Gypsy Mama Bali Baby Stretch (http://gypsymama.com/shop/stretch.htm) wraps are a nice weight. I wore DD at 18 months old around a VERY hot Irish festival last summer and we stayed comfy. The Bali Baby Breeze (http://gypsymama.com/shop/breeze.htm) gauze wraps are even cooler, but IMO are not quite as comfy and squishy for a newborn. All the GypsyMama wraps are SO pretty. She also usually has water wraps but they're out of stock at the moment.

Also, if you join the forums at thebabywearer.com you can get amazing deals on used carriers- I have bought the majority of mine 2nd hand for way less than they'd cost new!

Yowza on the cold! Yikes. If we had a high of 69 here, we'd all be bundled up. I don't know how you guys handle it. I heard once that it's better for boys to be born in the summer because male babies are weaker at birth? So they have a harder time than girls being born in the winter. Okay, off topic, but just thought I'd share the thought that popped into my head.

Back to discussing slings...

this is the water sling i looked at with DS that I WANT for this baby. DS loves water, so we have baths, pools and my showers to think about. DS will only be turning 2, it is unfair of me to think i can ask him to leave the baby alone -- ie baby sitting in bouncy in the shower like he did, while i shower and he runs around......and i do not want dhand i to have to take turns sitting out and miss the pool fun with him either, that would not be fair to DS or us......

We have a Maya Wrap ring sling (swore by this w/ both my kids), a fleece hotsling, a Kozy mei tei, and a Kangaroo Korner solarveil ring sling. I'm hoping to be able to use all of them w/ this new babe and to make a wrap for the nb stage to make chasing 2 toddlers easier:lol

I never even thought of a water one!

You guys have given me lots of ideas. And oddly enough, our local babywearing class teaching mama was talking about another class soon. I'm just not announcing this lil one yet, so haven't spoken up, to many members in that group shop where my mom works, so have to wait a bit.

Thanks for all the info and opinions. I think I'm going to see who has what locally that I can play with while I'm deciding, once the cat is out of the bag

I had a polar fleece sling custom made for me by a lady (http://stores.ebay.com/KIMZKREATIONS-Baby-Slings_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm) on eBay. I had bought one of her other ring slings and loved it, so I emailed her to ask about the PF. I am going to be using a convertible carseat from the beginning, and I wanted to have something warm and snuggly to put the baby in for carrying in/out of stores, the house, etc.
I also found a wrap at a consignment store, and have a third ring sling that I made when dd was a baby. Hopefully 4 carriers will get the job done, but I may buy an Ergo in the future...they look so cool for bigger babies & toddlers.

I loved my Mom and Me pouch, and my Sutemi as DS got older. Think this time I may get a Hotsling or a KKAFP, since its cold here and the baby will be born in the winter..

I'm thinking I might like to get a wrap this time....with a 3 year old to run around after, I'd like to have something where I could get the baby fairly secure. Any one know where I could find a good explanation of the different types of wraps?

Are you looking for a brand comparison or a discussion of stretchy vs. woven vs. fleece etc?

If I was only going to have one I'd get a woven- Ellaroo or Didymos or Storchenweige. They are tough and will be just as supportive for a big toddler as they are cozy for a tiny newborn.

Here's a comparison chart of some popular brands/styles of wraps and other carriers: http://www.peppermint.com/comparison.html

Back with more info later- DD yanking on my arm :)

I have a New Native on the way, and I want to get a moby and a mei tei. I know my husband will be most open to wearing the mei tei, he always notices when daddies have their babies in slings.

I guess both ;) Any and all info on wraps is much appreciated! There seem to be about 15 different brands, so I'm also trying to figure out the difference between all the stretchy brands and the woven brands.
