Oops, I typed this out as a new thread instead of a response to your post:
Definitely read the Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer. THat one is great for any pregnant women, not just for VBACs.
I would also get onto the ICAN email list. You can go to their website and from there get onto the list. ICAN is the International Cesarean Awareness Network. Likely someone there will be from your area and may know better about hospitals, OBs and midwives who are supportive of VBACs. It is high traffic, but worth its weight in gold a hundred times over, in my opinion. I couldn't have done it without the support and info I got from that list.
I definitely think you are right in finding someone who doesn't require CFM, but also find out about things like their policies and practices if you are having a big baby, are post-dates, have ruptured membranes, etc. You don't want any surprises later.
Good luck! I had a great homebirth VBAC last summer and it was wonderful. Have you considered homebirth? I knew that if I went to the hospital, I was so much more likely to have a cesarean, only because I had one before, so the hospital was the last place I wanted to be.
Take care,
Joanna
