View Full Version : OK dandruff. out of mind. what have I not tried eden/averymum 03-31-2007, 11:22 AM I've been doing no poo for two weeks now with no luck. I've tried not using baking soda at all. I have tried massaging in a good organic conditioner. what else can I do. Spastica 03-31-2007, 11:53 AM Massage in full strength apple cider vinegar onto your scalp and hair. Leave this on as long as you can stand it - do housework or something and keep a towel around your neck or make a turban. When you finally shower, no poo as usual. Perhaps I can help tweak your no poo method. What are you doing currently and what kind of dandruff do you have - white little snowy flakes that can be seen on your black tshirt, or severely itchy head, smells bad, could be yellowish and the goop can be scratched under your nails? What kind of hair do you have, curly/straight/wavy/african-american? Oily/Dry scalp or Oily/Dry hair? eden/averymum 03-31-2007, 07:01 PM ok I had, befor no pooing scaley patches, itching on and off, could be yellowish, but no odour. now it;s more like light flakes all the time. I have normal hair, not dry or oily and dry dry scalp. and it's wavey and long and thick. my hair is very nice with the no-poo but my scalp is the issue eden/averymum 03-31-2007, 07:01 PM how frequently should I do the ACV thing? Spastica 03-31-2007, 07:15 PM You can do the ACV trick as long as your scalp feels itchy and has dandruff. When it goes away, you can stop doing it. Sometimes it takes a week or so. If your hair is wavy and thick and your scalp is dry, you'll need to mix baking soda with lightweight conditioner to cleanse. This will keep your scalp from getting so dry. I bet you get even better waves that way too. Try also using less baking soda. I mix a little baking soda with Suave Tropical Coconut (no silicones in it), and fill the rest of my container with water. I squirt all this on my scalp and use my fingers to scrub. Rinse thoroughly with water, then I spray diluted ACV from ears down and put a little heavier conditioner (I'm really liking the cheap, but really good Mane & Tail horse conditioner, $3 at Walmart and other places, suitable for humans too. No silicones) on the bottom ends of my hair. I rinse again. If this is your first year of no-poo, I remember having the thicker dandruff oily problem, and then closer to spring and summer I got little flakes too. I had to adjust my no poo routine for the season and for how my scalp and hair was reacting. The no poo process is different throughout the year and how your body changes with it. I have a different routine now during winter than I do hotter months. I can't use much baking soda in winter, or else I get flat, staticky hair. eden/averymum 04-01-2007, 09:41 AM ok thanks. I'm doing the acv thing now. man did it burn in the first 10 minutes but it's stopped now so, just waiting it out :) Spastica 04-01-2007, 11:21 AM If it's burning, you probably have open wounds on your scalp, either from scratching or you have sebhorrheic dandruff, which you said you had before (the oily dandruff). It's pretty much a yeast issue on your head and it starts getting itchy and scabby. Once it heals, no amount of ACV would sting your scalp. FluffiB 04-01-2007, 01:35 PM I just wanted to mention that full-strength ACV might make your hair brittle (it happened to me when I accidentally used ACV without diluting it). I've been no-pooing for 1.5 years now, and just this winter, I noticed dandruff. I read that TTO helps, so I now add that into my diluted lemon juice rinse, and make sure to massage it into my scalp. It's helping. (I just prefer lemon juice over ACV) Because I have LOTS of thick, thick hair, and natural-bristle brushes don't penetrate to my scalp, I use a plastic hair brush and brush my scalp before shower and before I go to bed. This helps to exfoliate. I used to leave BS in my hair for a few minutes in the shower, but I don't anymore. I think it was drying out my scalp too much. I have to no-poo every 2-3 days now versus every 3-4, but it's much better than having embarassing dandruff! prairiechild 04-01-2007, 02:39 PM I wash my hair with shikakai whenever my dandruff gets bad. It is an Indian hair washing herb. I mix a teaspoon with two ounces of water in a pointed hair color bottle. Apply to wet scalp in shower. Let rest five minutes and rinse out. Fabulous. I buy mine locally but www.gardenofwisdom.com usually carries it too. |
