View Full Version : Question about early ultrasound

I've never had an early ultrasound, just one around 20 weeks or so. I am going to this time because of two chemical pregnancies and also because it sounds like this OB gives one to everyone at the first appointment. If you have an early one is it always transvaginal (is that the right word?)? If so, sorry to have to ask, but could someone explain to me what that is, is it uncomfortable? I like to know things in advance. Thanks!

On a side note, I'm looking forward to it, it is next Wednesday. I think I will not believe things are ok until I see it for myself, and even then I'm sure I will wonder.

I did, have one when I thought I may be pregnant (three out of 4 positive pregnancy tests!) And it turns out, I wasnt! :dizzy:

TBH, I found it uncomfortable.
She didn't even try the tummy, outside uterine ultrasound, just went straight for the vaginal wand. Whereas, with DS she did the external US.

It wasn't entirely horrible, but I would recommend asking for a external, if possible.

Or you could just opt out against any US, as I am.

Goodluck.

Oh yes: ETA:
Its a wand, (looks a bit like a skinny, uh, *clears throat* dildo.) She puts lubricant on it, and will go to the bottom of your cervix to see clearly into your uterus.
HTH.

OMG, now I'm probaby going to crack up when I see it. I am surprised this is the norm (early ultrasound) for this ob, but she sounds pretty good and since I actually want one it works. I will be 8 weeks, so I'm thinking they don't do abdominal yet, but I hope I'm wrong.

I had an u/s at 6 weeks with my DD (because of m/c hx) and it was NOT transvaginal...she plopped the doppler on my tummy and we picked up the baby instantly- saw and heard the HB, too. :)

That said, I've also had transvaginal u/s's with my previous pregnancies and I didn't find them uncomfortable.

Oops...sorry, I just realized this was in a DD board. :lol I saw it from the main index and just replied...didn't mean to intrude!!

I'm having an ultrasound at 12 weeks...so that will most likely be through the tummy? I never thought about it being any other way.

I had an exterior u/s with dd at about 7 weeks.

My early ones were transvaginal w/ dd. I had 3 due to bleeding. Starting around my 19th week all of them I had were the tummy type. The transvaginal aren't the most comfortable because you have a full bladder and well something plastic up there but they aren't horrible. Add to that the fact you are seeing your baby and you probably won't even notice.

Oh good, it sounds like maybe it will just be abdominal. If they can do it that way at 6 weeks, 8 should be fine.

(You definitely didn't intrude 1babysmon, thanks for the info).

When I was TTC for so long, they had to check my follies often and, therefore, I had to get wanded every time. It didn't really bother me much. I was way more focused on seeing just my ovaries, so I am not a bit nervous about having the wand again to see a heartbear. I didn't mind it at all.
Make it fun...lol...bring in a camera (or camera phone), and when they leave you in there to "dress down", grab a picture of you holding the dildo cam. I've got one in my memory box. :lol :lol :lol

We had one early....8 or 9 weeks I think...and just had abdominal. Hope that helps!

I always get an early one. It helps me due date wise, because by the time I get the 18 week one, my babies are measuring almost 2 weeks ahead. If I didn't have the early one they would change my due date, and no way do I want to be induced.

So for all three, I have had an abdominal us.

i had many, many transvag u/s last time to check cervical length. they wand is smaller than a er um, bob and they use lube and a condom. the first time i got one was over 15 yrs ago, no preamble, no explanation...i felt so violated!!!

this last pg, i got one at around 34 wks to check cervical length, and baby was still breech...the first thing the ob said was "OH, WOW, LOOK AT THAT COOCHIE"!!!:dizzy: :lol

i thought he was talking about my ginormous coochie...turns out, he was staring right at the baby's lol:shy

I've had quite a few wandings too - not that my ovaries ever looked like much. Trans/vag ultrasounds are no big deal. My hospital puts a condom on it, the ob uses a glove. I would have preferred a trans/vag last week just so I didn't have to drink water. I must say thought that having an abdominal one last week made me feel very "un-fertility patient" and very much "happy new mom"

I had one once - it was so early that we could barely see anything.
I did not find it uncomfortable IME (as long as they use a warm lubricant)

I had one at my first appointment with my first pregnancy and it was the transvaginal wand...but I am overweight so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been able to see much with an abdominal one. I don't remember it being uncomfortable, but I was transfixed by that little beating heart..so who really knows how it felt! I'm sure that I will have one this time too-same doc.

I had a transvag at 8 weeks w/ my dd. As long as you're comfortable with whoever's doing it it is not a big deal. They can get a better view that way.
