Oliver born 6/9/03!
Hi! Oliver was born at 12:30am on June 9th at my home after some 30 or so hours of labor! LOL! Yeah, I am the one who has had two previous 3-4 hour labors!!
Well it was slow and pretty tough. I was never lucky enough to slip off into "laborland" as I did with my second child. I had a cervix lip that didnt want to pull back and I pulled it myself, my water would not break so when I was positive it needed to be done I broke it myself. I think there was some back labor going on and the midwives were great at doing the counterpressure moves. And I when it came time to push I was feeling with my hands what was going on and I pulled and pushed the muscles open with my hands to get ready and I guess it really did a great deal to help. He was born 9 pounds, perfect head and I never even had to use the squirt bottle to pee and did not tear at all! While it was more um... scarry and and painfull (sorry I am trying to find some other words but they are not comming) I think if I had drifted off into the wonderfull laborland I experienced with my second birth I would not have been so active in the things that needed to be done.
It was also slowed down by my children distracting me but there were no other alternatives. I would have been more stressed by having them off with someone I dont know well enough, or against their will. They were in and out of the labor pool and Ian wanted to nurse a lot (which a few times really helped the contractions pick back up). My daughter Cassidy (shes 4) was up for the actual birth and I am so glad she was!! She was so excited to witness it and not freaked out at all, she stayed very calm even when it was slow and also never was scared when I was obviously working hard!!
Immediatley after I also had a tough time with the contractions. They were definatly one of the hardest parts of the whole labor. One side of my pelvis and all down my leg was hurting so bad. I think maybe that was the side the back of his head emerged. The bleeding was not too bad though, so I did not accept any pitocin.
Oliver didnt cry except for a few short yells but never neded any oxygen. He immediatly took to nursing and is opening his eyes brighter every day!
Despite, and maybe because of, my less than blissful story I am so greatfull for the oportunity to have had a midwife at home, especially one who respected my desire to have her as hands off as possible. I can only imagine the things they may have wanted to do to me in a hospital given the way my labor progressed this time! And in turn what little Ollie could have had to endure as a result of interventions!! Yikes!!
