I'm having a homebirth with a midwife, but I'm doing shadowcare too. I have an appointment with an OB (actually nurse practitioner) around 8 weeks with no ultrasound scheduled. What are they going to do/what should I expect? Will I be able to hear the heartbeat yet?

they will likely want to do pelvic w/ pap, urine sticks, bp, weight, and medical history stuff, as well as order labs. They might try to find hb w/ a doppler, but it is early for that.
Do they know they are shadow care or do they think you are delivering with them? If they know, you might be able to decline things, saying you'll do them with your m/w.

Midwives are currently illegal, so they won't know they're shadowcare.

My first appt is at 7 weeks, so not too mych before yours!
FYI....the ultrasound is INTERNAL, and they MAY be able to hear the heartbeat, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. It's usually to run bloodwork and such

'Shadowcare' sounds so covert and mysterious. You should wear a trenchcoat and talk like a detective in a noir film.

Ashley - they may be able to hear the hb but it also might be too soon. I saw you had a m/c and so did I. My mw told me to tell the nurse about my worries and if they don't hear a hb then she will pop me in for a quick u/s. I know they did this during ds's pregnancy also. So just be honest if you are worried and maybe you will get a quick peek. :wink

Paniscus: Thanks for that idea. I may do that.
And I know the u/s is internal, I had one after my miscarriage. It wasn't too bad.

Actually the one for my son wasn't internal and it was at 8 weeks. The ones for the m/c were probably around 7 weeks and they were internal. I don't know when the cut off is or how they choose but maybe you can get the regular (external?) one.
