My dh and I have recently tried to make 1/3-1/2 of our investments in socially/environmentally conscious companies/mutual funds. Our others are in ones that fall right in the middle of things -- not ruining the world but not improving it either.

Our latest investment was in New Alternatives Fund -- an alternative energies mutual fund. We checked out Patagonia and Seventh Generation, but they aren't publicly traded. I'm looking into Citizens Fund http://www.efund.com/funds/index.htm but don't know much about it.

Anyone have suggestions for mutual funds or publicly traded companies that are socially/environmentally conscious?

Try googling the Calvert Group - they are an investment management firm that focuses on socially responsible investing.

Also - some of the mainstream mutual fund companies may have socially responsible index funds (I think Vanguard might have one, but I'm not sure.)

Different companies define "responsible" different ways, so you'll want to look carefully at holdings if you go that route.

Back when we could afford it, we invested in Pax World (http://www.paxworld.com/). I was pretty happy with them. Now that we're starting to get back on our feet, I'd also like to invest in some environmentally focused funds later this year or early next.
