Hi all
Wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with PCOS and is still on metformin/glucophage during your pregnancy.
I am, but my OB (not the one who diagnosed me or prescribed the metformin) wants to to stop taking it. I am a bit concerned and want a second opinion. I'm 17 wks.
Anyone been through anything similar? Did your doctor recommend you stop to metformin? What did you do?
While I take the metformin for my PCOS, I am worried that stopping it will adversely affect my blood sugar. But my doctor didnt seem to make that connection.
Thanks for any responses.

I chose to keep taking it for most of my first pregnayc.
I am choosing not to take it this time...my body NEVER got used to it in several YEARS of use, i ALWAYS had the really bad GI symtoms/side effects, and it was making me miserable.....
but, I *thought* i would take it, so now i have a buttload of it sitting here, LOL! I get mine from medsmex.com, its super cheap, no script needed!

I stopped taking it at 12 weeks too. Didn't cause me any problems at all. My body seems to function so much better when I'm pregnant!

I have taken it all the way through my pg (I am almost 36 wks) - I was taking it for IR before and I don't know why that would go away just being pg - I wanted to avoid GD. Anyway, I did the research and concluded that there is no evidence of harm to the baby and it has been used for a long time so if there were going to be problems they would have shown up by now. I just basically told my MW I wanted to keep taking it and she said ok. Most other PCOSers I know go off at the end of the 1st trimester, but I also think a lot of them are just put on it for TTC in the first place. So my pg has been perfectly normal, perfect GTTs at 18 and 28 wks, perfect BPs, baby always measures right on, etc. I am going to keep taking it during BF too. Thats my experience...
If I were you I would try to pull up some literature about it and present it to your doctor and have a conversation about it. A great place to start is PubMed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?DB=pubmed, but you might have to go to a university or medical school library to get a hold of the full articles...

I agree with hollydlr. I have 36 weeks pregnant and have been on met the whole time. I did the research and felt like for me, it was the best choice. I was originally put on met for TTC, but I can really tell a difference in the way I feel if I am on it or not.
While it really is a personal choice, I would evaluate why you were put on it in the first place, if it helped, and what the result would be if you came off of it.

Thank you for all the responses and esp for the article link, Hollydlr.
I, too, am worried about my GTT next week and it makes no sense for me to go off the metformin now, esp if it can potentially help me avoid being diagnosed with GD. I think I'll do some more research before I go off it.
You guys are great, as always.

I'm 16 1/2w and still on the met. One of the OB's in the practice I go to wanted to take me off of it at 12w and I said I wasn't comfortable doing that. He said it was fine to wait. Another dr wants me on it the whole time. It does help ward off GD. I'm probably going to take it until a couple of weeks before my due date!
