Does, or has, anybody else experienced Pubis Symphysis Dysfunction? I'm 28 weeks along, and I seriously fell like my pelvis is going to split right in half... Not a pleasant feeling, to say the least! I'm carrying pretty low with this pregnancy, which might have something to do with it, plus this is my 3rd baby in 4 years, so my ligaments are probably still all loopy from the others.

I've found a few results with Google searches, but stories and coping techniques from the trenches would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Kate and new baby

my midwife is trained in this technique:

and this took away 99 percent of the PSD pain I was experiencing after just 2 sessions. If you could find a practitioner in your area, I would highly, highly recommend getting this done.

I've had PSD with all three of my pgs, and it has gotten progressively worse each time, and started earlier each time. I'm about 12 weeks right now and I've already had a few twinges....just a foretaste of what's to come, I fear! I also have arthritis in my lower back, which agravates everything else, so not much fun in the last few weeks.

But the end result is worth it, lol! :love

What helped me (since staying off my feet is not an option, LOL!) is regular chiropractic adjustments. My chiro is a Bradley instructor, a doula, and a MW assistant, so she is quite knowlegeable about pregnant women, and comfortable with the appropriate adjustment techniques. I'd highly recommend that you ask around (your midwife, at LLL, or other natural childbirth-friendly locations) for the name of a chiro who has experience with pregnant women. Also, this article I found quite helpful (not just for overweight women): http://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm

Thank you both so much! I found an Arvigo massage specialist right around the corner-- who knew!-- so I might check her out, and I also found a chiropractor who specializes in the Webster technique... Both are pricey and not covered by my insurance (Medicaid will cover any allopathic provider the docs refer me to, but I'd get laughed off the caseload if I asked about for coverage of prenatal chiropractic!), but the money would be more than well spent if I can walk and get out of bed without my pelvis feeling like it was about to split...

My Perinatologist and the medwives in his office (high-risk OB practice due to my artificial heart valve) nod sympathetically but have pretty much dismissed my concerns about this pain, so I'll have an uphill battle, especially during delivery! I'll more than likely have an induction (issues with birth complications from a medication I'm on for the heart valve), so I'll be monitored 97 different ways and have an IV in my arm, so I have a feeling that too many position changes in labor will be discouraged... I'll start raising hell at my next visit, I think, since I have another couple months to go...

Happy pregnancies to all!

I had excrutiating pain in the two back joints of my pelvis with both pregnancies.

I was diagnosed with an unstable pelvis which is basically the same condition only affecting the back joints. The pubic joint was sore to touch but easy enough to avoid.

I wore a brace that was basically a wide piece of elastic, like 15-20cm thick, that velcroed up at the back. The physio said it would provide stability which would prevent the pain from the joints moving about and also prevent a dislocation. I understand this is more likely with the pubic joint. I wore it day and night for about 25 weeks with my second.

Good luck.

oh my gosh!! yes!! i had this at the end of my 3rd (last) pg. It was awful & it stuck around for a few weeks even after birth. I read you can get a support belt. I never did, but I would've gladly wore one if it would have helped.
What I had to do is make sure I had my knees together when turning over in bed. can't remember much else. I hope you find a way to manage it!
