I'm so excited cause my partner has finally agreed to our baby (due October) having my name as the last name. His last name will be the baby's 2nd middle name. I've always felt that the baby shouldn't have the man's last name *just because* -- to me it stirs up that whole wife & children as possessions. It was quite a heated discussion the first time I brought it up, but he's finally on board with it!!! I'm so happy as I also have two older daughters who both have my last name and it was important to me for that reason also.
Also, he's agreed to Finlay for a first name if it's a boy, Fin for short! I'm so thrilled with that also cause I love the name!!!
Neither of us can come up with any girls names though... *sigh*
Thanks for listening (reading!)...

This is very exciting. We actually were just at a party where someone was arguing passionately for giving children the mother's last name. I considered it very seriously, then sort of let it drop (I already have the connection to the baby; I'd like to give him some sort of connection, etc), but I'm starting to get excited about the idea again.
It's great that your partner came around to your way of thinking!

Awesome! This was a big issue for us too. I was keen to hyphenate or combine into a new name, but dh thought those were terrible ideas. So we compromised: ds has dh's last name (my last name as a second middle name); #2 will have my last name (and dh's as a second middle name). We know some other people that have gone this route too.
Oh and Finlay's a fabulous name. Lucky baby!

I made a big ol' stink about this, too!
So our son has my last name. When DF and I get married and both change our last names to a mutually agreed upon new last name, DS's middle name will be my current last name and his last name will be changed to match ours.
DF's daughter has a hyphenated last name, and he abhors that.I think part of him agreeing was just to avoid another hyphen.

Yay for dh coming on board! I love the name Finlay too. I'd love it for our boy but it doesn't sound too great with his (hyphenated, lol) last name.

I wish! My husbands last name is terrible. I didn't take it. Where I come from culturally, that's very common. Your father gives you your last name, he's raised you, your dh didn't. (Still very male dominated, but not neccesarily possession like)
It's funny, because I wanted my dd to have my FATHERS last name! Which doesn't make sense in that line of reasoning. But was more than that for me. I am the last person in my family with my last name. There are no boys to pass it on. Also, my husband has no respect for his dad's side of the family. He thinks they're all awful people, so why would you want to give your children the name they gave to you? I even told him he should take my last name, but I guess he's just too traditional.
