For some reason I have no m/s yet (I know, I'm counting my blessings) but I certainly am having odd cravings and aversions. I have always found my own cravings/aversions and those of other preggos fascinating...want to share? Extra credit if you think you know why you crave it!
For me:
Craving:
Anything spicy, especially hot sauce...
especially buffalo chicken wings (I am a vegetarian, and yes this happened last PG as well!)
Apples
Mineral water (last PG as well)--I assume I need more calcium/magnesium
Baked potatoes
Mexican food
French fries :bag: (One early sign of pg, even before I tested, was that I got an insane FF craving; I went out and bought a large fries from the Wendy's near my office, all the while feeling very suspicious of myself. I had never even been there before in all the time I've worked here.) I assume this is a calorie-need thing.
Yucko:
Oatmeal (??)
Luna Bars (I ate one yesterday and regretted it all day)
Anything excessively sweet

So far, nothing much going on here in this department. With my other successful pregnancies I had a lot more aversions and cravings right from the start. I also would gag when I brushed my teeth, occasionally even more than gagging.
In the past my main aversion would be eggs, which I normally love. Also, anything that I took time to cook would gross me out. I'd do a lot of crock pot meals, and things with very simple prep. so I wouldn't have to handle them much.
What's weird now, as in my other pregnancies is that I get VERY hungry. Sometimes I can eat a lot of food, sometimes I can eat only a few bites. Either way I get equally hungry. There is just no way to predict how much I'll be able to eat.

Craving: absolutely nothing. Only three things taste good: turmeric, cinnamon and nuts (not seeds) The smell of coffee beans.
Aversions: garlic, onions, lemon, gravy, potatoes, pasta, rice (even the smell is turning my stomach), anything fatty or greasy or fried in any way. Cake, cheesecake, custards, baked custards, chocolate, caramel, tea, coffee, herbal tea. Anything sweetened in any way. The smell of milk. Biscuits. Bacon, sausage, meats of all kind, especially the fatty ones. Oh, and tomatoes. And because everything I cook contains garlic, tomatoes or chocolate, I'm screwed :(
Fundamentally, I'm living off yorkshire puddings and vegetables at the moment, because nothing else tastes good :(

So far I am suddenly extremely adverse to Mexican. I had a mexican casserole in the freezer that I defrosted last night and it's been so hard to eat it. DH is going to have to finish it up. I think it's the beans which is bad because they are such good sources of protein.
I'm also having trouble drinking water...:p
I'm not allowed to be adverse to greasy food until after we move next week because I know we'll be eating our fair share of takeout and fast food while we don't have a kitchen. :bag:

nacho ice cream sundae....
tortilla chips, caramel praline ice cream, that gooey greasy cheese dip from convience stores, and jalapenos. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!
and I usually hate that fake cheese!

I have had no cravings so far, but am hating the smell of any kind of Seafood (I work next to a seafood resturant, so I don't know how I am going to get through the summer!)
And no morning sickness so far, which I am feeling very lucky!

Well no actual morning sickness yet, just days where I have that general yuckiness feeling. Craving today: potato salad. GOD WAS IT GOOD! And I'm completely living on fresh fruits and veggies. Mostly veggies. I'm a veggie-maniac!
No real yucko foods yet, but I usually have an insane sweet tooth and I"m totally not interested now. Just don't even think of the stuff.

Hooray! No m/s yet!
Cravings: Iced tea, lemon water, hot dogs :o , Dippin Dots ice cream, nachos
Hates: Meat (except Hebrew National hot dogs), eggs, everyday smells
I have never been able to eat eggs while pregnant. And handling raw meat just makes me cringe. Plus, my sense of smell is so acute that yesterday at church I could smell the breath of the people behind me as they were singing! YUCK!

I also would gag when I brushed my teeth, occasionally even more than gagging.
I've been having this problem. It's awful. As someone very focussed on oral hygiene, this is a nightmare. Dh and I bought some lemon flavored toothpaste for me to try.. No go. It still has a minty quality. Yech!

Me too exactly. I'm normally all about the sweets all the time. I used to eat at least a bite of chocolate every day. But I don't even care anymore. Just doesn't sound good.

I know what you mean! Smells! Everywhere! I smelled our roommate's towel from about a foot away and I almost yarfed. It stank like mildew so bad. And now I can smell the water when I turn on the faucet. Eew.

Cravings:
Tang (it's vile when I'm not pregnant, but when I am I can't get enough)
Meat of any kind, particularly bacon and lamb.
Brussels sprouts (once again, I HATE them when I'm not pregnant)
Citrus fruits
Aversions:
Coffee ( :bawl-- I can't get enough of it when I'm not pregnant)
Most sweets
Oddly enough, anything terribly high in simple carbs. Usually i love mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and cream of wheat during pregnancy but this time the idea fills me with foreboding... :shrug I think I just need more protein this pregnancy for some reason. Last night I ate about a pound of salmon and half a pound of brussels sprouts for dinner. :lol

Hey mama's who are coping well with toothpaste, what about the Tom's of Maine kids pastes? They have strawberry and grape. I know that the strawberry is pretty mild, not like the Crest kind (or whatever other Mainstream children's brands there are).

Everything sounds and smells good to me, and I am just craving all kinds of things, but when I eat I can barely force it down. I go to sleep hungry, wake up hungry, read a book hungry, etc. etc., but nothing tastes good enough to actually eat. And I keep thinking I smell cigarette smoke or a dirty diaper everywhere I go. I'm not sick to my stomach in the conventional way, I just feel off. :irked:

:) I am all about cravings and aversions at this stage (7 wks-ish). due to m/s my aversion list is longer than the cravings. :)
Cravings:
Salty things, like pretzels and salty soups (miso esp)
Cheese (but I can't have it due to ds's food allergies, I nurse him)
Watermelon (I had this last time too)
Aversions:
COFFEE (dh asked me what it smells like to me and the best description is "dirty acid" :) ) I LOVED coffee before too.
Salmon/fish
sweet things, particularly cookies and chocolate
meat
peppers and onions (we had them sauteed for dinner yesterday, ugh)
orange juice (my toddler wants it every morning for breakfast)

OK, my yorkshire puddings and nuts and seeds are gone now.
I'm now living off beetroot and vimto (a blackcurrant, redcurrant and raspberry flavoured fruit squash) and not much else. I swear, this baby is going to be born with purple hair at this rate...

I haven't had any really strong cravings or aversions like I did with my first pregnancy. With ds my strong cravings were apple and orange juice and I had an aversion to everything to the point where I could not do any food prep or grocery shopping at all.
So far I have developed a slight aversion to coffee. I am a big coffee drinker and planned on switching to decaf like I did last time. But suddenly this week the thought of drinking coffee leaves a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach so I haven't been making it. I wonder if I made it, would I be able to drink it? Or would the funny feeling persist so that I wouldn't be able to stomach it. I don't know.
The only little craving I can think of is that I haven't bought pickles since I was pregnant last (and I ate a lot of them during my last pregnancy) but before I took the test I was shopping and I thought, "You know what I haven't had in awhile? PICKLES." And bought two big jars. Dh laughed hysterically when he saw them and called, "You are SO pregnant." but I dismissed him saying, "I just LIKE pickles, that's all." Sure enough, BFP a few days later and both jars of pickles are loooong gone. :lol
I am also buying and drinking orange juice again but I'm not having the same desperate "I need orange juice now" feelings; I'm mostly using it because I learned last time that when I feel a little shaky or unwell a glass of OJ is a really quick way to turn things around.

I have been on a huge salad kick lately. The more vinegary the dressing, the better. Vinegar seems to settle my stomach. Also, bean burritos are the bomb. That's about it, though.
I was on ice cream for a week, but now any milk product grosses me out and amps up my MS. I am forcing down tea and have let my new Gaggia espresso machine collect dust as I just can't fathom its (normally) frothy goodness. I can finally understand why my husband thinks that coffee is disgusting. From this reference point, he is completely right!

Well, it FINALLY hit me last night. I don't have a TV at home and I've been off of work while the quadriplegic lady I take care of was in the hospital, but she got out last night and while I was helping her get into bed, there was this commercial where some guy said:
"Steak and bacon!"
I almost lost it right there. I'm vegan and had temporarily forgotten that such items exist and the tone of voice he used was just so ucky that I could almost SMELL those consumer products.
Appetite wasn't too good yesterday either, so my stomach was empty and that couldn't have helped much.
I remember salads being about the only thing I could keep down with Phoenix when it hit full force. It's a good thing I'll be getting my community supported agriculture boxes starting this week. I'm feeling okay this morning, I just don't want to eat anything and I know I have to.
Coffee and cigarette smoke are my classic aversions. Normally I love coffee and I was a fairly heavy smoker when I was in my 20s. Both of those substances were horrible to me long before I missed a period or passed a pregnancy test and it was torture to be in the same room with them, much less have to gag down a cup of coffee so exy wouldn't figure out I was pregnant before I was ready to tell him.
This has been the oddest pregnancy because I walked right past a smoker to buy my HPT and if anything, the second hand smoke smelled pleasant (it's an ex-smoker thang buyt it does NOT make me want to start smoking again) and yesterday my kids were trying to grind up the last coffee beans in the house with a hammer and it smelled so yummy I almost wanted a cup myself.

So I haven't been able to tolerate simple carbs; i managed to eat some cheese yesterday, and some salad (tasted PAINFULLY sweet).
Today I have a craving for sweet coffee. :shrug I don't know if I'd be able to tolerate it, but I really want one. I may beg my husband to get me a tall mocha on the way home. :lol

I have all day queasiness here so no cravings at all and I can't stomach cooking. I am finding pretty much any strong smells unpleasant. Yuck to eggs, tomatoes, fish, chinese food, porridge and fruit. Last time I was pregnant I didn't feel nearly so queasy - I hope the the first trimester passes quickly.
I forgot one more, normally I am big tea drinker but right now tea is so unappealing (weird)
noordinaryspider
06-16-2007, 07:59 PM
The queasiness was back today and I really had to force myself to eat (I'll have to do it again in another hour or so and I am NOT looking forward to it!) but I forgot how much ginger helps! I remember nibbling on crystalized ginger with one of the kids (helps get your blood sugar up, too) but what I did today was grate about 1 or 2 teaspoons of fresh ginger and make a sort of a tea with it with a squirt of lime and a dash of maple syrup (I was canning apricots this week and there isn't any sugar left in he house) and it totally settled my stomach all afternoon.
Just thought I'd pass that along.
It's also DELICIOUS and nothing else sounds like it would taste good to me today.
Oh well. Here we go again.

Fresh veggies (and fruit)! I can't get enough of them. The other night I just had to have tomatos so I went out to my garden at 10pm and was picking them by moonlight. I broiled some of them with parmesean cheese, salt and pepper, and snarfed them down. I can't stand anything greasy.
I get long bouts of queasyness, but nothing to speak of compared to what some women have to cope with. In all pregnancies I've only once or twice lost the contents of my stomache.

No ms but I rarely have it anyway.
No cravings yet either, but at 4 weeks I'm not expecting much.
My only aversion is shrimp. I cannot eat shrimp when I'm pregnant. Just can't do it. I did however eat crawfish enchiladas at a local cajun restaurant this evening and I was fine with that.
eilonwy
06-17-2007, 08:54 AM
Now you see, that's fascinating to me. Shrimp are highly allergenic (all shellfish, really). I could not tolerate peanut butter during my first two pregnancies-- another highly allergenic food. Today I have kids with few food allergies (though BooBah is lactose intolerant). It's been demonstrated that kids can develop antibodies to highly allergenic foods in utero-- they can become sensitive to them if their mothers eat a ton of them during pregnancy. My son can't eat too much citrus without getting eczema; I ate a ton of oranges and grapefruits while I was carrying him (I wanted Tang, but I told myself that the actual fruits were probably healthier and besides, I needed the fiber). Interesting, no? I love shrimp and seafood, and always crave it madly while I"m pregnant but I try to keep it to a minimum because I don't want the kids developing allergies to one of my favorite food groups. :lol Bluberries/tomatos (nightshade fruits) never have much appeal to me when I'm pregnant (the smell of blueberries is enough to make me :Puke), but if they did I'd keep them to a minimum as well. Strawberries, peanuts and tree nuts, and even soy-- I try not to eat massive quantities of any of them. :D
Not that I can eat massive quantities of anything right now. I've got to brush my teeth but the toothpaste always makes me gag... :gloomy:

I drank a ton of cow's milk (like a gallon a day if I could afford it) when I was pregnant with Jeanita and she came out with a very severe allergy. Her exczema would come back when exy would feed her Sun Chips, which contain only one dairy produst: whey, and it's very low down the list of ingredients.
I have a borderline peanut allergy and appreciate Eilonwy's reminder that I shouldn't eat it while I'm pregnant.
I don't think I could today anyway. Ugh. I need to go to a pancake breakfast for one of the places I volunteer and then go chop vegetables for Food Not Bombs today. Maybe I should bring along a ginger root just in case.
Still doing much better than any of my other pregnancies, though.

I'm not feeling particularly averse to anything yet, but before I knew I was pregnant I went on a major yogurt-buying kick -- should have been a clue. During my first pregnancy, for weeks all I could tolerate was white, creamy food: yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes, etc. So far this time I am eating pretty well, though nothing satisfies me for long before hunger kicks in. I'm only 5 weeks, though.
BUT, I am leaving for a long-planned and first-ever trip to Europe during weeks 7-9 and I am hoping to be able to eat. Crossing my fingers that m/s is minor or absent. On the up side, I won't have to do any food prep!
Thanks for the reminders about food allergies. None here or in dd but I have friends who have severely allergic babies -- I don't want to end up there.

I can't eat carbs - blech!
Despite my constant nausea, I am having cravings...but when I get what I crave it's REALLY difficult to eat it!
I'm majorly craving Indian food (anything REALLY spicy) and ice cream. I don't see having Indian food anytime soon, but I have some Ben & Jerry's in the freezer that I'll break out after the kids are in bed.
Food allergies - when I was pregnant with Z, I couldn't stand nuts (even the smell was HORRIBLE!), dairy or wheat bread/pasta. He had peanut, dairy and wheat intolerances until he was around a year old and continues to have issues with dairy.

The nausea is gone or much better now. I forgot to mention that I'm LOVING greens, like kale, collards, chard, etc. but I was even when I was TTC. I helped out with Food Not Bombs yesterday and their food is very pregnancy-friendly. We made a rice dish with summer squash and broccoli that was simply out of this world so I came home and made more of it for my kiddos and me.
Bean seems to approve.

I find that I get cravings for things and then eat them, but then afterwards think about it and feel nauseated. For instance I have been craving cashews for a few days, I had my DH pick some up for me today I ate a couple of big handfuls and now just typing about them makes me feel barfy!
I also always seem to have an aftertaste in my mouth that is very bothersome. I have been brushing my teeth more and chewing gum.
This stage of pregnancy is always such a challenge for me. Nothing really tastes that good, smells really bother me, and I feel so run down. My DH is a smoker and if he comes around after having a cig I just about lose it!

Eggs, cheese, cream cheese, chocolate milkshakes (so much for my recent attempts at Veganism..) peanut butter, pasta, sometimes super-healthy stuff like tofu salads and fruit, sometimes fries. Salt, salt, salt.
Red wine (not that I've had any!)

Red wine contains lots of good stuff for pregnant women (people in general, really). I bet 2-4 oz would satisfy your cravings and get all that good stuff into your bod. If you're really really tense about it, try to figure out what, precicely, you're craving and try to satisfy that need without the alcohol. Otherwise, I personally would have the wine. Your body knows what it needs; unless you've got serious issues with alcoholism, you won't get sloshed.

Can one survive on Indian food and ice cream? That (and a bit of my mom's lasagna) is all I've eaten for three days. Everything else just sounds horrible! I'm so glad Trader Joe's has the heat and eat Indian dishes - very handy!!!
I'm finding it very difficult to make food for my kids because if something doesn't sound good to me to eat, it nauseates me beyond belief! The poor kids are living off pb&j, fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, and whatever else I can scrounge. Hopefully I'll get on a cooking kick next week and cook and freeze a whole bunch of stuff to make life easier!

 Someone here had the signature "Pouring raw, organic milk over my cocoa puffs" for a long time. :lol You're not alone. Right now I could really go for some Silk over Capn' Crunch, which is noteworthy because simple carbs have just been yucky to me for a while now. :D
Except for Tang, of course. :lol
This is my first pregnancy and I am so clueless about everything. I didn't know that you could get cravings and aversions and yet I've been craving chicken soup all the time every day. And popscicles. That's all I want is chicken soup and popscicles. I thought I wanted the chicken soup because we were in Canada and Tim Hortons has the best chicken soup, but I still need it. Normally I love icecream and can't get enough, but now the idea of it makes me a little queasy.
Makes me happy to know that I *might* be normal.
Also I was intrested to read about your child's allergies in relation to what you ate when pregnant. Can anyone direct me to more information about that?

I'm entering the phase where I drive my husband crazy because nothing sounds good but I'm dying of hunger. I spend half of my mental energy trying to think of something I want to eat. Last night I finally figured out that vegetarian sushi would work (and I gobbled it down).

Just in the past day or two the queasiness has set in big time and the things I I normally eat sound horrible.
Aversions:
Any salads or greens
Beans, rice
Tofu
Water
Any kind of stir-fry
Basically most things healthy
Cravings (and I don't normally eat this way!):
Any kind of carb- spaghetti, white bread, lo mein noodles, etc. And forget the whole wheat pasta- I want the white stuff!
Juice or Gatorade
Pork chops, meat loaf, chicken and dumplings, ham and beans, smoked sausage and sauerkraut, etc. (basically the kind of food I grew up eating!)

I'm entering the phase where I drive my husband crazy because nothing sounds good but I'm dying of hunger. I spend half of my mental energy trying to think of something I want to eat. Last night I finally figured out that vegetarian sushi would work (and I gobbled it down).
This morning I had vanilla frozen yogurt and a glass of milk for breakfast. I don't even know when I last had a glass of milk!
Also, Indian food is one of the few things that sounds edible to me, too.
That happened to me last night at midnight. I woke up and DH was just coming to bed and I was dying for food, but nothing sounded good and a few things made me gag just at the thought. So heated me up a corn dog lol It wasn't exactl what I wanted, but it helped take the hunger away so I could go back to sleep.

Last night I laid awake wanting fried chicken. I couldn't let it go until dh promised me that soon we would get something like Banquet fried chicken. I told him we'd also have to pick up some instant mashed potatos so it would seem like KFC. I love how much I get whatever I want now. My dh is a wonderful sport about all of this.

My hot wings craving is back with a vengance. Pity, my appetite didn't return with it. I ate a hot wing and immediately regretted having put anything into my mouth. :gloomy: Spent most of the night remembering that I shouldn't be eating. :shake
