Once the baby is born, do you plan on using any disposables ( like when going out or at night?) I just started CDing my toddler, and I still use disposables when going out. I'm think i'll probably use disposables at night during the early months.

No, I won't use disposables. I bought some Tushies with my first baby but never needed to use them. I find that a good nighttime diaper and a wool cover work just fine at bedtime.

I agree with norajane... disposies are not tto touch the new baby... well, with one occasional exception... I use sposies when we air travel... I just can't fit enough diapers to last even a couple days in luggage for a plane. so, we are stuck doing sposies for that, since I really won't be able to do it with two in tow.

Than said, going out or even on long car trips there is no reason to do sposies.... cloth is so much nicer, and if you want easy for the road, go with AIOs or stuffed pockets... as for night, I have 2 solutions... 1, I make a special "nite" diaper with extra layers of terry through the full body... bulky, but it works, and he wears either a wool or a double layer fleece cover (we don't do PUL so far) or, I tried this last night and it worked no problem... he wore a fleece outer pocket, stuffed nice and thickly.

no issues.

I plan to CD. I won't use sposies part time coz it's too freaking confusing! If I decide to go out, I have to change the little bugger, even if I just changed them, so I'm not taking them out in a CD? No thanks! Seriously, I am that lazy. Newborn poopy dipes are so innocuous, I'll just take a wetbag and go.

I have found when cding my toddler that i do use disposables a night. I dont use them when going out, except when going to the gym, b/c the freaked out with cloth, not worth the hassle. we are also just starting to EC so maybe that will eliminate my disposable issues. When he was a NB i used only CD. Never changed at night either too lazy, and too tired. we use PF and bummis, with a few contour dipes mixed in. I have tried lots of other, and this is what i come back to every time.

No sig, b/c I have dial up and it takes to long....but we CD, BF, Co sleep, and plan to homeschool

I ended up needing to use preemie sposies with my last baby because he was born early and nothing fit him well and we leaked everywhere! But once we hit about a month old we transitioned to full time cloth :)

I'm going to use cloth too. DH is worried we'll be too busy and tired to clean them but I just said "hey! your mom did it we can do it!". I didnt cd my son until he was 3 months old so I'm really excited to start right away now!

We won't be using sposies on the newborn. We rarely use them on the 1yo. (Sometimes I take them to church because my bag is already stuffed with books and CDs take up so much space.)

I am looking for diaper suggestions. I have some mother-ease diapers that I LOVE...but mostly I have prefolds I bought at Wal-Mart. I'd love to try something new with the new baby. One of the things I like about the ME diapers is that they are made to fit from newborn to toddler...so I don't have to buy a whole bunch of different sizes (that I can't afford). Anyone else have faves?

I'm going to keep a stash of size-appropriate 'sposies around because our water is not consistently functional. Last year, right after our neighbors/friends/coworkers (a teaching couple) brough home their new baby (who they CD), we lost water to teacher housing for four days. Diapers are RIDICULOUSLY expensive at the village store, so I'll likely bring one box of each size with me. I won't have to worry about that until the kid is three months old, though, since we'll really only have a few weeks after aforementioned offspring is born before heading back to the Lower 48 for the summer.

We use CD's all the time and have since dd was about 3 months old--she was a preemie and we just weren't prepared. The only time we ever use disposables is when we're camping or traveling for an extended time.

I would like to use cloth from birth this time, although if I have another tiny one we'll probably use disposables until the babe can fit into what we already have.

Probably. I totally plan to CD at home and use sposies when we're out.

Hm. I suppose I should get on the CD wagon soon....I have like 4. LOL

Nope we 100% CD. I did bring trimmer dipes in the diaper bag (Bumkins AIOs) and had a size small bummis wet bag for dirty dipes.

I ended up using disposibles with my DD at night...but that was when she was about 18 months or so. I just could not keep up with the amount she peed or with her sensitive tush. She was getting too many rashes when left in cloth all night.

But...once again, that was when she got bigger. I'll just play it by ear with a newborn...

I will probably do sposies at the hospital for the meconium. I don't want those kinds of stains on my dipes.

I am doing a mixture of dipes, but all AIOs. I covet the softness of minkee, but have hard water so they can smell a bit. I don't want to spend a ton, so I am going to be making some too from the diaperkits lady. Love that she does all the hard work of cutting and pattern stuff and I just have to sew it together. I am even going to get some cute prints and water proof them so I can use them as outers for the AIO.

Very cool

We have used cloth exclusively on DS, even though well-meaning friends gave us disposables. The meconium didn't even stain! And we took a 2.5 month road trip last fall with a 10 mo baby and used only prefolds the whole way. :D We stayed at KOA's and did laundry at camp. Oh but if we take any other road trips I'll use this trick - put used diapers in a 5 gallon bucket with a tight-sealing lid, and soapy water. Put in trunk and drive all day. At night, the diapers are ready to be rinsed and hang-dried!

Hmm, well I didn't go cloth with dd until she was 10 months, so I need to do some research on NB CD'ing.

Currenly, -we use disposables at night and CD during the day. Prefer VB AIO's Bamboo. But, will probably do fitteds with NB until he/she fits in the M/L AIO's that I have a TON of gender neutral's!

I figure I got plenty of time to decide! :)

Me too. I need to convience my DH of this too. He really worries it's gonna be too much work. Our planet is sick and I'd know too much now to go back to disposables. I just wish I could get him on board.

OK maybe I'm not just going to read and maybe this should be a different thread but...
Should I start CD on my 16mo now before the NB comes. Which would be easier? Learning on a NB or a toddler? This is sort of on topic right?

Nate's Mama, I would start now on your 16 month old!! You can get a feel for what you like, then you don't have to play the guessing game for the new baby.

I cloth diapered in 2003-2004 and I like Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heinies (sold colors only), Bumkins AIOs, prefolds and Proraps diaper covers, kissaluv 0s for newborns, and thats it. I know some new kinds have came out since but I haven't tried them (like BumGenius). The Motherease one-size and Sandies system is pretty good too.
I tried tons of brands (including fancy expensive WAHM hyena dipes) and these triumphed as the tried and true for me. They are still in great condition to use for baby #3!! DD still wears M and L Fuzzi Bunz to bed.

Nates Mama you can definitely start on your 16 month old now. I just started CD about two months ago, and my son is 19 months old. I use mstly fitteds and prefolds. The fitteds are really nice ( I love motherease sandys ) but I bought a lot of prefolds initially because they were much cheaper. The first time I put a prefold on my son h looked so funny and it almost made me want to stop CDing. But then I learnt the bikini twist and now it's a sinch.

This is so funny to me. It's like you're speaking a different language.
Fitteds, AIO, bikini twist, prefolds - I haven't the first clue what you're talking about :lol

There's a seminar in my area given by a local CD retailer I'll be going there in the next month or two. I will learn the lingo!!

I so appreciate all the feedback. I don't personally know anyone that CD's!
Thx

My son is 15 months, and we've been CDing since he was 6 days old. Once the tar was out of his system we started and haven't quit. I don't use disposables for just going out, it's just as easy for a cloth to me. The only time I used disposables was on the day of a flight. Other than that, even hubby is a CD advocate. We now make them and are starting out own business. Good luck!

I will use some sposies in the early weeks and then change to cd when I feel rested enough to deal with the laundry...Although:D we EC and love it so whichever I use it will be a back up. With ds I ended up using only 0-3 diapers a day. Anyone else EC or thinking about it?

I've used cloth diapers from the very beginning with all of my kiddos. I use prefolds, various kinds of wraps, a snappy, and happy heinies for bedtime. Ds#2 and Ds#3 were both heavy wetters around 15-18 months old, and so I occasionally used disposables at night during that period. Ds#1 went through a similar phase, but it was earlier on, and so I could use two prefolds. There are ways to layer different materials for heavy wetting with a trimmer fit, but I've never checked them out.

I'm interested in doing a combination of ec and cloth this time around.

BTW, my husband was very skeptical about cloth back when I was pregnant with ds#1, but I was driven by environmental issues and health issues, and managed to convince him with the incredible cost savings. 'Course, when I started, it was right at the beginning of the huge boom of internet cd sales, so prefolds were the way to go, economically. When ds#1 was around 18 months old, you could get just about everything that you can get now, but I haven't switched.

I am usually given a packet or two of disposable nappies, so I will hang onto them for emergencies, but I don't plan to use them regularly.

I always end up freecycling half a packet because the baby has grown out of them. :lol

Nate'sMama - as a note of encouragement to you, some friends of mine adopted a toddler and although he'd been in disposables all his life, they used cloth on him. Soon he was carrying a (clean) prefold around the house and petting it. He loved how soft the cloth felt! :D

Nope, I'd never put a disposable on one of my dds.

What about disposables makes you think they'd be superior at night?

The smell of sposies after a whole night is one of the reasons we CD! Like a flowery litter box!

We do just fine with a double-stuffed FB at night on ds2. Ds1 uses the potty.

For a newborn, we used sposies until meconium was gone. Then Fuzzibunz. this time I may get some prefolds or fitteds.

For me they may very wll end up being superior at night. If it means I dont have to deal with rinsing a poopy diaper in the middle of the night when I'm dead tired, then yeah, I consider that superior at that particular time.

Well, I never even rinsed bf baby poo out of my diapers, so I never had that inconvenience. And now, if dd ever pooed in the middle of the night, I would leave it until morning to rinse! :shrug

I may end up doing CD at night, if I find that it's not that much extra work....but I have no qualms about using sposies the first few weeks if it helps me stay sane. We'll see when the time comes.

i expect to have 3 in cloth diapers.

i feel i should share my cloth diaper journey - seems like it'll come in handy.

i did disposables iwth baby#1. til baby#2 arrived. both are in disposables, wearing the same size diaper (yeah, baby #2 was THAT big). when baby #2 was 3 months old, I started rethinking the cloth diaper thing. Figured I could start transitioning just baby #2 into cloth and keep #1 in disposables. (#1 has HORRID stools. couldn't fathom cloth diapers and dealing with that.)

fast forward a few months. i've slowly built up a stash of cloth diapers and recycled fabrics around the house to have enough diapers for one child in diapers full time.

Now i'm starting to think about hmm, maybe i could save MORE money if I put baby #1 (who's 2 years old now) in cloth during the 'wet diaper' times of the day and when i expect him to have a bowel movement, keep him in disposables.

well, that worked well fora nother few weeks, but one day, i 'guessed' wrong on when he'd poop and he did a real icky. well, that wasn't so bad to deal with as i thought.

esp since i realized my washing machine does a GREAT job getting rid of the most unpleasant things in the prewash.

so, i slowly put baby #1 in full time cloth.

then i learned to sew. :) now i make all their diapers and have been working on a stash for the next baby.

i prefer cloth to disposables. it's really not so bad after a while. the icky stuff is minimal, and i learned my washer does a great job, so i'm pretty lazy.

it's so easy when the baby is breast fed exclusively. i NEVER toileted those diapers. the prewash was all that needed - no matter how much volume there was.

for on the go, i made individual diaper bags that i put a clean diaper in, 2 cloth wipes and that's it. i always have a water bottle, so that's my 'solution'. i pull out clean diaper, moisten the wipes, change diaper, put dirty diaper and wipes in the individual diaper bag (lined with pul), pull the drawstring, snap the snap and i'm done! :)

i keep 4 at all times attached to the car seat belt in my car. 2 per kid. :)

that's been enough for all my outings thus far - can cover up to 8 hours if needed that way. esp if one puts extra soaker on 'first' diaper of outing and changing when convenient. (if pooped, i never delay, but pee - after 6 months of age, yeah, i've been known to finish grocery shopping or errands or whatever and change him at home.)

i also do assembly line diaper changes. if one needs it, the other gets done, too.

gotten to the point where both boys know if one poops, they both get changed asap, (poop smells travel faster than pee smells, lol) so they'll lay down on the floor near the diaper station, lol.

(they're 18 months and 3 yrs old now).

i also do open diaper pail in diaper station area, closed diaper pail in bathrooms - for holding the dumped poopy diapers. . . .

if you keep the dipaer pail open for pee 'only' or breast milk 'only' diapers, there's no odor.

weird, but true. if you close the lid, the ammonia smell will knock you out.
