so here it goes: Katarina Marie's Birth Story

The weekend before she was born, I started having false labor that was pretty painful at times, and that following monday I went into the doctors to be monitored. My midwife told me I was just having bh contractions and she checked me and said I was at a -1 station, 90% effaced and 2 cm, so she stripped my membranes. Well, during the week, not much happened, I would get some strong bhs here and there but nothing constant- on weds. I lost my mucus plug and hoped that ment that labor was starting, but nope! Friday night dh and I went to the local burger joint and I remember thinking this is our last meal, just the two of us. Well, indeed it was because I woke up dh at 2:45 saturday morning saying "I hurt." well, then I kept having to use the toilet and had a bunch of contractions on the toilet which really sucked. Dh called the midwife's office and I told her that the contractions were 4 minutes apart for 50 seconds. she said it still was early on and that I should try to get some sleep and have a snack. well, as soon as I hung up with her the contractions started coming back to back -- really fast. I crawled out to the living room floor and was yelling for dh to rub my back and to call the midwife back and call our doula. the pain in my back was sooo intense, I really had to have dh rub it- no choice! when I called back the midwife I told her that they were coming so fast I couldn't do anything and she said to come to the hospital then. But the contractions barely had a minute in between so it was really hard to get to the car. on the way to the hospital I threw up all over the car poor dh! When we got to the hospital the midwife checked me and said I was 98% effaced and 5 or 6 cm. the internal really hurt and the contractions were coming so fast and so strong that I couldn't keep up with them. Thank god my doula arrived and she started talking to me and calming me down. Her voice was so reassuring that it really helped me focus. The midwife and some of the nurses filled up the tub and I got in-- The tub felt awesome- and I stayed in the tub with my doula rubbing my back for most of the time. I had back labor and could not have a contraction without someone rubbing my back. my doula was so good at rubbing my back that when she tried to take a break and have dh take over I kept calling for her to come back. after a while I could start to feel the baby's head putting a lot of pressure on my cervix and I knew that it wouldn't be too long before I had to push but I was scared of it and I couldn't come to terms with the fact that I was going to push a baby out down there!! my midwife then told me to try and use the toilet so I got up but couldn't go... she then asked if I wanted to be checked and I said I guessed so. I moved to the bed and she checked me and said I was almost complete- just a small lip of cervix left. I was moaning very deeply--trying to match the noises that my doula was telling me to make, every time I moaned I could feel the baby's head move down. It was so intense- I asked my midwife if I could start pushing since the head felt like it was in my vagina- she said if I felt like pushing I should, but that pushing was hard work and I should be sure I was ready. but I never got the urge to push really, so I just tried it and it made the contractions pretty much go away, but the pressure and the difficultly of pushing took over. Dh was standing in front of me and I kept looking at him and telling him I loved him. By this time the baby's heart rate was dropping really low-- to 48 at one point -- probably because I wasn't having any breaks in the contractions-- so they put me on oxygen and put an internal monitor on and they kept trying to get me to push to get her out becuase they were worried. I was nervous cause they were so concerned and I just kept pushing with all my might. Her head crowned just about the size of a silver dollar for sooo many pushes and then in one big push half her head was born. I tore a lot because it was so quick. then in the next push her whole head came out and my midwife pulled her shoulders out and it hurt so bad that I screamed really loud. when she was out they had to take her right away and suction her and I was so worried that she was ok, and I kept bleeding so the midwife had to give me an iv of pitocin and deliver the placenta really fast. The end of the delivery was really intense because I was bleeding so much and the baby was in distress. The midwife looked really concerned about my bleeding and I was so freaked out about her concern and also about the baby. but the baby was fine after a bit of suctioning and they gave her to dh while they tried to get me sorted out. Since I had torn so much my midwife had to call another midwife in to help stitch me up. and cause of the bleeding they had to keep giving me shots. It took them 2 and a half hours to suture me-- that was hell- I was so relieved when they were done and I could just hold the baby and talk to dh. So that is how our miss katarina was born-- it was a wild ride! 6 hours of labor and 45 minutes of pushing and all natural! no drugs! with back labor! it could not have been possible without my amazing doula. But the whole time I kept thinking that this isn't as bad as people make it seem, and I never once felt like I couldn't do it or felt the urge to curse or anything. The worst part was when she was actually being born- the pain "down there" was just horrible otherwise the labor wasn't so bad- and I even had piggy back contractions and back labor- the worst!

so that's our story!

she was born at 9:03 am on her due date-- 6 lbs 14 oz, 18.5 inches and she is such a cutie pie! (except when she wants to be fed all night.. haha )
