I'm only TTC but am a big planner. So I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences with public birthing hospitals in Rome.

I've heard good things about San Camillo from an Italian friend who had 2 kids there. I've also heard good things about Fatebenefratelli but apparently the good reputation means that there are often overcrowding problems.

I know this is probably asking a lot for Italy but I'd like it if the hospital had progressive attitudes towards pain management (ie epidurals are available if needed), allowed women to labour in various positions, water birth, rooming in, not sharing a room with 4 people (and hopefully a private room during labour) and breastfeeding help.

Any recommendations?

Ciao Piccolina!

Good luck with TTC!

I researched this because I wanted a great birth experience, and I found FABIA MATER. The answer to my prayers! Only 2 to a room; 24 hour rooming in; The only birthing tub in Roma, (besides private clinics); and the hospital is new. The midwives were great. The doctors' bedside manner left a lot to be desired, especially for this California Girl, but that is a small negative considering the rest of the experience. (Besides, I only remember midwives helping with the birth.) I didn't have one, but epidurals are available. There is not a private room for labor, but for me, it was worth the trade-off for rooming in with my baby. I also must say that I kind of liked having a room-mate rather than a private room. It made me feel less alone.

I could go on and on, but basically I just want to recommend FABIA MATER. I highly recommend taking their birthing classes too.

Feel free to email me if you want any more information. :)
