View Full Version : where are you?
the elyse 10-04-2007, 09:55 PM so, it's been really fun getting to know all of you, and it's really cool that we're all doing this together.
so, where do you sit (or lay) when you're on mdc? do you get on at 3:00 in the morning when the baby kicks you awake or are on while your toddler is napping?
here's me:
we have a little nook with a desk and bookcase in our living room. our emac (that i'm in love with) barely fits under the first shelf, but it works. my mouse is on a makeshift "tray"...it's really a drawer with a mouse pad on top of a couple checkbook boxes. :lol the paint is rubbed off the drawer front where my wrist sits. there's a picture of my and my husband on our wedding day on a fire truck and i have a great view of the tv, i mean, my daughter when she's playing in the living room. :D i've got the complete works of van gogh on the top shelf and a box set of the lord of the rings that my dh is always teasing me about. my favorite item is the little piggy bank dd painted and gave to me just because.
isra1986 10-04-2007, 10:02 PM I am either in my living room at the computer desk on my desktop with my cell phone and house phone beside me.
Or, as I am right now, on the couch on my Sony Vaio that DH bought me to do my school work on (Yeah, I am slacking right now!)
I have my feet propped up on my coffee table, watching Law and Order and I have a view of my kitchen.
Sorry mine is not as descriptive as yours. I am sleepy!
LoveChild421 10-05-2007, 05:36 AM our computer is in the kitchen in a little nook. I'm soooo happy we got a wireless mouse because I'm a leftie and I love being able to use my left hand to work the mouse!
I usually get on MDC in the morning before work for a few minutes (when I'm in that transitional phase between sleep and awake), for a few minutes on my lunch break (I live about 5 minutes from work so I usually come home for lunch).
Teenytoona 10-05-2007, 06:03 AM I'm at work most of the time... Sometimes I post from home in a bedroom that is a would be kids room/office, until we get everything sorted out.
bloominmamas 10-05-2007, 06:32 AM I am on the futon in the early morning while my kids eat breakfast and play before we get ready for the day. Otherwise same place throughout the day if I am around. Been lurking the last fews days...
AlwaysByMySide 10-05-2007, 07:59 PM Usually, I'm on the couch using wireless on my laptop (either on the recliner with my feet up, or the chaise section with my feet up). I'm also sometimes (more rarely) in bed, and hop on after I've tried to get to sleep and don't feel like reading books anymore.
I'm usually on later at night, but I do pop on from time to time during the day if I'm home.
nausicaamom 10-05-2007, 08:08 PM I'm either on our desktop upstairs in our back room or using the laptop downstairs perched on a tray table. I pop on several times a day, but my big times are usually in the morning and during Michael's nap (when I should be sleeping).
I'm at my very cluttered desk, I have my camera in front of me, a dictionary, a glass of water and many other misc. items. Organized chaos!
I come on several times of day. I am often at the computer, popping in during the day as I putter around the house. I check my facebook, (to play scrabble with my friends) and then check here.
noordinaryspider 10-05-2007, 08:57 PM I am lying on my bed. No, it's not a laptop. I have my monitor on my bedside table and my keyboard in my lap. There's just barely enough room for a mouse pad on the bedside table, but no brushes, mirrors, cosmetics, bedtime books, lamps or other normal things for bedside tables and lots of miscellaneous clutter (glasses case, nail files, chapstick, KVM switch, pens and pencils, small screwdriver, used Q-tip) to navigate the mouse around.
This is my "best" computer, circa 2002, with my 500 gig external drive plugged into it at the moment. It runs Slackware 11.0 and has my complete set of bookmarks. The machine at my desk is mostly for downloading "stuff". It's an old celeron, supposedly equivalent to a P III but painfully slow and with a lousy video card, but it DOES have a functioning DVD drive. It and the living room computer both run DSLinux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org).
The living room computer, which I post from during the day at odd moments, is a 400 Mhz Pentium II, but it's by no means my oldest or slowest machine. That honour goes to my 166 Mhz PII and yes, I still take it online sometimes. It was my smoothwall for the longest time until I FINALLY was able to afford DSL and the only DSL modem I could find the night my service was switched on had a built in (albeit crummy) router and I never have been able to switch back to the smoothwall.
I guess I'm more than a bit of a subversive, low-budget geek; I never thought that information and education were things that should be bought and sold. I like to find the back doors and share them with other folks who don't have the same advantages I do, but my communication skills are under construction.
Sometimes I post from work, which is why I can appear to be online a ridiculous amount of time, but right now none of my jobs involve computers. It's nice and cozy here and my cat is curled up at my feet purring. My dinner is getting cold. ;)
Writerbird 10-05-2007, 09:29 PM In Virginia, in order for something to be called a "bedroom" in a real estate ad, it must have a closet, a window, and a door. The code says nothing about there needing to be four walls. So we chose to make this bedroom our office, because it's really more like a loft overlooking the living room.
My mate and I have matching desks, and we're usually near each other. My desk has my desktop, my work laptop, a Star Trek: Generations mousepad, and a map from the Old Forest (a zone in a game my husband and I are playing together once a week or so). I also have a huge stuffed carrot and a stuffed dragon. There is a bottle of water shaped like a miniature... you know, one of those big barrels of water you upend onto a dispenser. The water bottle filled and consumed twice a day is how much I'm supposed to drink. My better half is always watching to make sure the contents are cold. Finally, my external hard drive is here, because I back up all my photos once a month. I'm a scrapbooker, though not the scary kind, and my pictures are the part of my heart that isn't taken up by my husband and my not-born son.
I had an old bathrobe I loved and I wore out the elbows and the collar. That left a lot of lovely flannel fabric. I used an old pair of jeans for a base, the flannel for tops and sides, and used an old "eggshell" mattress topper as the cushion, and made matching dog beds. There is a flannel dog bed under each desk, and each dog bed is occupied by a beagle. They just had dinner, so they are both snoring.
This is the only part of the house where computer things are permitted. The room with the TV is set up with his drafting table and my sewing and scrapbooking stuff, to keep us from being online 24/7 :)
Writerbird I envy that you can enforce a room where the computers live. I have one in the office (where I am) along with a TV and an Xbox, then in the living room DH has his laptop generally perched on the arm of the sofa, and we have our DVR which is a regular computer with a microsoft media center program. So DH is always on a computer, if I am on this one then he's on another in the other room, or on the Xbox or the Xbox 360. However the only room in the house without a TV or computer is my scrapbooking room... hee hee... although there are plenty of boxes with lots of misc. wires.
flapjack 10-06-2007, 12:15 AM I alternate. Normally I use our old computer (built by my DH, in the style of NOS, standing up in the incredibly messy bedroom of doom) but since we got laptops, I've been spending more time posting, as I do now, sitting in an armchair with the puter perched on the arm. TV is on as the 7yo boy tries to get himself into sentience (asthma attack, this is no time to make an issue), porridge is on the hob and the knitting is in my lap as well.

That's so funny, I have a big old Websters next to me and my camera is sitting in front of me too! And I pop in through out the day, I hate it when MDC is down, it makes me realize what an addict I am! I am in the Sun room/Front room/Learning room, whatever we refer to it, everyone knows which room it is! THis is the room where we do our structured HS on a (good cheap) futon we bought at Ikea and I have this great old fashioned mission style black desk and a matching black swivel chair , and I only mention this for two reasons. First, my laptop is not working and I never really used this computer anymore, but now I am here all of the time and I love the setting, it's comfy. I don't remember the 2nd reason! Then I have this painting of me, huge, of when I was prego with DD#1 and while I love the colors, the artist who was a neighbor at the time, made my nose look awful. It hangs over my desk. I need to replace it. Oh I forgot to mention the jungle of plants in here that I am really bad about watering because I am soooo far from the kitchen.... but please don't ask me how far, :o
smokeylo 10-06-2007, 08:38 AM Anyone else SICK of the database problems MDC is having?? :irked:
I sit in a red armchair in the corner of my living room. There's a side table next to me with a lamp and usually a mug of tea. I watch the tv as I type on my beloved iBook that has to be mailed in for repair this week :crying
I don't have kids yet, just cats, so I have lots of time to spend avoiding homework and housework on MDC!:o
eilonwy 10-06-2007, 06:16 PM I'm usually in the bedroom/living room these days, using my laptop. Sometimes I'm in the kitchen (cooking!) or even the bathtub... :o We have no furniture to speak of, though, so if I'm not sitting in the tub I'm sitting in bed.
Gunter 10-06-2007, 07:10 PM usually on the deck off of our bedroom, overlooking rice patties and trying desperately to balance the laptop on the ledge or my knees so i can pick up a decent internet signal from the midwive's house across the field. :lol
writerbird- i grew up in richmond. dh and i lived in nova but are not fond of our time spent there so much. and, i went to college for a year in lynchburg where dh and i met.
StrawberryFields 10-07-2007, 10:01 AM I only have a laptop and it has a dead battery so it has to stay plugged in. That means I am always sitting in the living room on the couch or recliner because the laptop stays plugged in on a table that sits between the two!
I have to get better about sitting on the recliner in my last trimester because last time I wasn't so careful and ds was malpositioned. That made a long, tiring labor even more long and tiring!!
MommyHammy 10-07-2007, 02:45 PM As I post this, I am sitting at a coffee shop called "The Magic Bean" with my hubby and 2 best friends, drinking a steamed milk and eating a krispy treat. This or another coffee shop called the "Morning Emporium" is where I spend about 25% of my online time. Another 25% of the time I am sitting at the oak office desk that my father made about 20 years ago. The remainder of the time I spend on the internet is when I am sitting in my insanely comfortable Lay-Z-Boy that I bought at a garage sale for $10.
StrawberryFields - is there something wrong with sitting in a recliner or is it a good thing? I spend a lot of time (2-3 hours a day sometimes more) sitting in mine?

I wish it was a good thing! But it's not :( Reclining and semi-reclining encourages the baby into a bad position that can make labor long and difficult.
ScarletBegonias 10-08-2007, 01:16 AM i use three different computers right now:lol
dh's is in our "walk-in closet":rolleyes it is spacious, and he has a brand new computer chair (his first one ever!), but i am surrounded by guitar equipment, beer bottles and sunflower seeds. it's a pretty nice computer though and i have a view into our bathroom and bedroom to keep an eye on dd.
my sisters computer is a pain in the a** to use because she doesn't allow dd in her room. her room is very pretty, decorated with dried flowers, john william waterhouse paintings, fancy pillows and plants. i don't blame her for not wanting dd in there.
i can't disclose the whereabouts of the third computer, :hide: as the results could be devastating. it's a laptop and it sucks ergonomically.
next october i will be buying my very own computer! :carrot my car will finally be paid off and by then i'll really need one for midwifery school.
