Araceli Jane was very reluctant to come out into this great big world, until she was given a little push ( ha, ha ) then she made her appearance very quickly.

I was 13 days past my due date on 7/23/03, so we had decided to go ahead with the pitocin inducement. We got to the hospital at 6:30 am, filled out all the paperwork and were monitored for a while. I was contractng on my own about every 10 to 15 minutes, but they were not painful contractions, just the same thing that I had been experiencing for 2 weeks. The midwife checked me at about 8:45 and said I was just about 3 cm and 90% effaced. They went ahead and started the pitocin at 9:00 am. The pitocin was gradually increased throughout the morning, and I found it interesting to see how with each increase how the contractions changed and how I had to change how I dealt with them. The midwife told me that she was going to home to lunch and that she would call to check in around noon, as she didn't anticipate much to be happening until around that time. At 12:10 my water broke!! It was really cool to know that something was going on to go along with the now painful contractions. The nurse called my midwife and she said she be in to check me soon. They cranked the pitocin back to half of what they had been giving me. She arrived and announced that the water was perfectly clear, yeah! She said she was going to check me, I figured that I was probably 4-5 cm, as I didn't feel like it had been that long or hard to get to where we were. She checked me and said " you're 8 cm! " she was surprised as well!! This was at about 1:00pm. She decided to get ready and have all the things brought in. This caused my dh to wisper to me, " I think they're getting a bit ahead of themselves. " To which I had no reply because at this time the only way I could get through the contractions was to groan and moan very loudly. At 1:45 I had the urge to push and was given the go ahead. It took me a couple of contractions to get into the swing of things, but on the third or fourth contraction that I pushed Araceli was completely born, from in the birth canal, to crowning, to shoulders out to born!!! It was so fast! I was the first person to shout " it's a girl!! " ( We hadn't known the sex ). She had the cord wrapped around both of her anknles in a figure eight, she cried once then started turning blue, so they cut the cord and gave her some oxygen. She started crying and was doing great. She weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19" long.

My sister brought our dd, Maria, 2 1/2 years old, to meet her new sister and she gave her kisses and asked me when she could hold her. Araceli latched on like a pro and has been nursing like crazy since. Maria is handling her new sibling much as I anticipated, liking to help with things, but getting jealous at how much time baby gets held by me.

It really was an awesome experience, and I felt like I had much more control over things this time around. The midwife was great and I am so very pleased!

Congratulations!! Wonderful story. I just had to say, that the very first picture I got in my head when you described the umbilical cord around your baby's ankles, is that she was bunjee jumping!:D Maybe you have a born thrill-seeker!:) Blessings to you all!
