Hi,
I met a woman who made her own baby sling out of simple fabric and I asked her how she did it. She just said to buy three yards of fabric and sew it together.
She was able to put her cute baby in all sorts of positions and the baby looked very comfortable.
Does anybody know of any good sites to show me how to position the fabric to achieve those positions and how to make the sling? It looked like a very simple design but I've never done anything like that before.
Thanks,
Caring Touch :hippie

I use the pleating method described in the last link posted and REALLY like the resulting sling. It's comfortable, spreads over your shoulder well, and looks pretty. The other ones, where they say to fold the fabric accordian style, or what have you, are more uncomfortable and not as adjustable, IMO.
I use the medium rings from www.slingrings.com and LOVE them. They're large enough that they adjust really easily, but still hold baby securely.
I buy 2 yards of 45" fabric (just a standard woven, as long as it doesn't have an obvious "wrong" side), cut it into two one yard pieces, sew the selveges together (so you have a piece of fabric 36" by 90", hem the ends and edges, and then pleat one end and sew the rings on. All told, it takes about 30 minutes to make one!!

Charmie981 (or anyone else :D )
What size sling rings do you buy? I was just looking around on slingrings.com and I want to order some but I'm not sure what size. I'm just using regular ol' woven cotton to make my slings...if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

I personally prefer the large rings from slingrings.com - easier to thread the fabric through them.

I use the medium and like that size. It's much larger than on my OTSBH or NoJo slings and since I leave the tail open, the sling is so much easier to adjust than the other two were. I :love it for the price I paid (I think it was like $10 between the rings and the fabric!!). Can't belive I didn't do it sooner!!

Excellent information and a super nice mdc mama at www.peppermint.com. See the links.
I got an EllaRoo baby carrier and sewed some spares for myself. Harder to make than I thought, but they work. And my EllaRoo is like a work of art!

This is a very simple pocket sling to make. I have made 4 of them. One modification I have made is on the bottom edge I put about a 2" round (compressed to about 1-1.5") padding so the fabric doesn't cut into babes chubby thighs, he prefers the hip carry. It is super easy!
