DH kind of encountered and got sucked into a conversation at work on breastfeeding. The two women that he was talking to both breastfed for a "short" amount of time (I don't know exact, but it was definitely less than a year, maybe less than six months). Here is a paraphrase of the conversation as relayed to me by DH:

Co-Worker 1: Breastfeeding for a little while is OK, but (said in a whisper) I know someone who breastfed for THREE years.
DH: Well, it is perfectly normal to breastfeed for four years. (Co-worker 1 gives him a dirty look) Kristen is still breastfeeding our two year old.
Co-worker 1: Well, I don't like it when they pull up your shirt and unlatch your bra in public, that is just too much.
DH: Well, DD doesn't do that much anymore, Kristen has worked on stopping that (i.e. nursing manners) and when she does nurse in public, you can't see anything.
Co-worker 2: Well have you started weaning at all?
DH: Well, we have started the weaning process (because solids have been introduced), and we have set a "drop dead" date.
Co-worker 1: When is that?
DH: Prom night.
Co-worker 2: (while laughing) I don't think her prom date would like it very much if she was still nursing!

My hubby is very much the same. Isn't great when DH is a lactavist!

We need a lactivist husband hall of fame. It is so great when husbands are supportive of bf, and doubly great when they toot the horn of extended bf!

Ok, now what on earth is so horrible about nursing at the prom? Well, maybe not AT the prom but at home before and after?

Why would you push your daughter into weaning before she's ready, just because she's past puberty and is all dressed up for a fancy dance and will probably want to lose her virginity that night?

I know lots of women who openly stand up for BF, but I find it a bit rare for a man to stand up for them with the same passion :( I truly feel like it makes so much more of an impact when they do, though. I wish more men were like your DH!!!

DH was just standing over my shoulder, as I was reading him the responses, and he really liked this one "Look at that!" (pointing at the :bow smilie)
Although he did say, "It's all for my benefit though." One of his big selling points (with his male friends expecting babies) is that breastfeeding allows the dad to sleep through the night more often.

I also think that he is easily annoyed by one of these coworkers (#1), so while defending extended bfing, he found some secret pleasure in freaking her out.
