I know this is a natural parenting board (and I've been around here for years and years ;) ) but what are the thoughts on zofron? I've never really taken anything in the past but I do get violantly ill the first 14 wks or so (starting around 6 - 8 wks). I'm considering taking something this time. Last time I was literally in bed 24/7 for at least 6 wks. It was summer, though, and my youngest was quite a bit older than my baby is now. So, what are the thoughts? I've tried everything under the sun to get the morning sickness under control. All alternative remedies you can think up and then some. You can flame me if you want. I'm tough. ;)

I used it during my first pregnancy. (It's less interventionist than staying in the hospital on an IV, in my opinion, which was where I was at the time.) If you have hyperemesis, I strongly recommend you get a scrip ASAP and get on it. It's pricey (even with insurance--my copay was only 8 doses, not the normal "30 days worth"), but it is like a miracle. Within minutes of my first dose, I felt fine. I mean, totally fine.

It was a huge difference for me. I didn't take it every day but it let me keep functioning and working.

Hope you all don't mind me posting. This topic caught my attention.

Amy, there's a new generic Zofran that's cheaper than the original. So, it might help on the cost a bit. I agree, if you want to try it, start it right away & then gradually increase the dose if needed.

ETA: Oops! :blush I'm sorry I thought you were looking for other natural things to try. Really, if you think medication is the way to go, Zofran really is a good one. Also the Unisom-B6 combo. You can contact Motherisk to find out about dosing for Unisom/B6. They are SO helpful!!! http://motherisk.org/women/index.jsp

There are MANY hardcore natural herbs to try too. You may even find better relief here.

That's funny--I had such great luck with the Zofran but absolutely no luck with the Unisom/B6. (I tried everything. Even some drug or other that was in suppository form--and believe me, I had to be desperate to agree to that.)

Hi, I went through constant nausea and frequent vomiting from week 6 on before I got a prescription for Zofran at 16 weeks while on a trip home to the US. Like another poster wrote, I felt fine within minutes of taking it for the first time. I'd forgotten what it was like to feel normal! I didn't take it more than a handful of times (mostly due to cost, since I wasn't carrying US insurance at that point, but I was also concerned about safety) but just *knowing* I had it in my pocket helped, that there was a way out from the constant nausea if I needed it.

Additional safety studies have been done since I took it, and it's great that there's now a generic.

By the way, I'd also tried everything in the book from ginger to seabands to acupuncture, and was really ready to club anyone who (well-meaning as they were) suggested that maybe I should eat some crackers upon waking up to settle my stomach!:dizzy:

Hope you find some relief!

No kidding! I hated that so much. All I could think was, "I am throwing up 12 or 14 times a day! Do you really think I haven't considered the saving power of saltines?" It made me furious or at least it would have made me furious if I had the energy to be furious.

I was just given zofran for my nausea/vomiting that is caused by my pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation. Zofran is a Class B drug which means it is safe for pegnant women.
For me, I had to weigh my options 1) feel totally sick and not be able to keep any nutrients down and get depressed or 2) take a pill once and awhile and feel worlds better. I choose #2. If you don't feel comfortable doing it though, I would stay clear. Nothing is worse than guilt.
Hope you feel better.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant now, with severe HG--5 hospital stays in 4 weeks. Right now I have a PICC line and I'm doing Zofran and Phenergran both IV, and I am finally being able to hold down a little food and liquid. The oral kinds of both didn't touch my nausea, but other people say the oral was fine for them. Good luck!

I figure there's guilt either way. A) be depressed and sick and totally neglect my kids or B) take the pill and just pray it's OK. Of course if anything goes wrong in the pregnancy I'll blame myself but I would do that no matter what. This pill gives me hope that I can make it through the next few months.

Thanks everyone! :)

Thank you! I did read your link. I tried those things last time and while they helped it just wasn't enough. I was flat in bed still. I have the twinges of nausia already. I've never felt it this early. I'm hoping it's not a bad sign. :(

I am going to an herbalist on Saturday to check some things out there. I'll keep your recommendations in mind. Thank you!
