Hi there. I am 7 weeks pregnant with my 4th baby. I have been having a bad asthma attack for the last 2 weeks. This does happen to me usually during this time of year when the furnace comes on and the animals are in the house more. This time though it doesn't want to let up. I was given Pulmicort (corticosteroid) this time and it didn't work. It actually makes my symptoms worse. The Doctor put me back on a low dose of Flovent. What I am wondering is, has anyone out there used flovent through the first trimester? And if so were there any negative effects on their Babes? I am seriously freaking out. I should also say that I am having to use my ventolin at least once if not more a day. It has been 2 weeks now. I am so scared that I am damaging this Baby. If anyone can offer me some insight I would really appreciate it.

I was told that ventolin is safe during pregnancy, and the larger risk is to not get your asthma under control since when you're deprived of oxygen, baby is too. If you have to use your ventolin that often, I'd definitely check with your hcp about maybe a different kind of rescue med or even getting on a preventative one at least until your "bad" season for attacks is over.

Is flovent albuterol? My hcp said is absolutely safe to take. I quit taking my preventative (inhaled steroid) while ttc and luckily have it under control, but I'm pretty sure I was told certain preventatives are ok too. Def talk to a hcp as soon as you can. Oh, and a lot of times I'll look up stuff on Hale's. Yes, he's the b'feeding expert but his site (just google Hale and b'feeding) has charts as to what's safe both for pregnancy and b'f, and I think Kellymom does too. HTH!

I was also told that the risk of being without oxygen is greater than the risk of the medicine. I used albuterol during my 1st trimester and I worried about it too. The oral medication Singulair helped me a lot. I only took it for a month to get past Spring hayfever season but it allowed me to use my inhaler a LOT less. Singulair is pregnancy category B - you may want to ask your doc about it. Hope you feel better soon!

My DH is not into natural medicine, and Singulair also helped his asthma. His asthma is similar to yours - seasonal and not willing to go away with breathing treatments.
I am very into natural medicines, and insist on it for DD, whose asthma is much more severe than DH's. I refused to put her on any steroids, but we used the albuterol during really bad episodes (didn't seem to help.) We've gone doctor hopping and tried all sorts of natural therapies. The best help we've gotten is from our constitutional homeopath. DD's asthma is just about non-existant anymore. She had amazing improvement right from the start.
