Risks of unnecessary internal exams..

Does anyone have a link to information that validates the fact that unnecessary internal exams to check dilation at 34+ weeks can do things like introduce infection?

I'm trying to find out why a woman in an uneventful pregnancy would subject herself to these procedures when there's no practical information to be gained from how dilated you are at 34 weeks...

Some might question the source of this article (http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/interventions/a/vaginalexam.htm)(about.com) but, while not a doctor, the author does seem to have some credible qualifications.
