Why don't we have an ongoing thread?
I'd love to hear about what everyone is doing.
It was hard to get out of bed today with the cold temps.
I have to get dd to get dressed and eat so we can start our homeschool activities for the day. We've taken some time off because I've been sick but her vacation is over! :lol

Yay for a Kansas thread!
We drove into Topeka for DS1's Kindermusik class and then did some shopping. I'm almost done with my Christmas shopping, which is unheard of for me!
I'm planning to check out your homeschool blog... I'm very interested in HSing the kiddos but I haven't won over DH on that one yet. :shrug

It's warmed up a bit here too. Dd and I took our doggie out and played in some leaves. I don't know who had more fun crunching through the pile. :lol
I haven't started any Christmas shopping. I've started thinking about it at least.
I have some things to sew that I should start on.
I just added an entry to my blog yesterday.

Hi Kansas mamas!
Kim, I've always wondered, where in ne ks are you?
We're in Lenexa :Puke right now, but hoping to be in Lawrence soon. (Sorry, I just don't like Jo-co.)
I like the weather. Lived in Phoenix, and I missed this chilliness a lot. I'm so ill-prepared though. Need to find my sweaters and scarves!

Gumby- We are about a 15 minute drive from the Kansas- Nebraska border in Brown County.
What's everyone planning for the weekend?
We're not doing much because dh has had to be in KC most of the week for work and he's tired of driving. Lately we've had a lot of visitors so I'm glad not to have guests this weekend.

Hey another Kansan here
I have been pretty busy so far this fall. I caught a baby a couple of weeks ago and have another due any day now. So, been doing lots of prenatals and such. I am working on a business plan right now too. A friend of mine and I are attempting to open an American style bakery in the City Market...that's been keeping me on my toes. I have been missing play groups a lot lately and have been feeling the desire to hang out and sip coffee with my girl friends :)

Oh, I am in Wichita, so really I don't have that much to complain about.:p
I think it would be great to have a Wichita/Lawrence meet up or something like that.
Maybe we could meet at the giant ball of string.

I am ashamed to say that I've never seen the giant ball of string. I'm a baaad Kansan.:lol Next spring/summer I'm thinking I really want to take the kids traveling through Kansas, there really is a lot to see. It isn't the boring place people make it out to be. If I can line up some art/craft shows along the way, that would help fund the trip. Are there any good ones in Wichita or the surrounding area? Aren't there some other mamas in Wichita? I know I've seen some around here somewhere...
I think it would be fun to have a weekend campout (with cabins for the not-so-outdoorsy folks) meetup when it gets warm again. There are so many people within a 2-3 hour radius of Lawrence, but it's so hard to get everyone together. Probably all of us would have a bit of a drive, so imo, it would be worth it to make it a weekend deal. At the moment though, I'm cold and very commited to my spot on the sofa under my blanket. I'm hibernating. :p

There are some really awesome looking camp places in MO, I was looking at them back when it was warm but we never went. :irked:
There are caves and natural springs, we don't have as many places like that in Kansas. :lol

I haven't actually seen the giant ball of twine either, but I have always wanted to. I would love to get together and camp or something. I don't think I would be willing to drive to MO to camp, but somewhere in KS would be fine. I have heard really great things about the childrens museum in Kansas City, so maybe that would be an option as well.
I agree, cold weather, couch, knitting or a good book. Too bad ds wants to run around and be outside so much. I like my hibernating. :)

The museums and fun stuff for kids in KC are great, there are so many. Science City, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Fine Art, The Toy and Miniature Museum, The Kansas City Museum, Harry Truman's old house (actually in Independence I think). I know there are more, but that's just off the top of my head. I'm originally from KCMO, so I'm a little biased.:o
Does anybody here ever get to the festivals like Winfield or Wakarusa?

Aww, I didn't realize she moved away! That's too bad! I met her at the KS LLL conference last year and thought she was a sweetheart.
Thanks for your comments about my blog. We go to the Wichita Down Syndrome Society meetings every month, so maybe I have met your friend there! I was also on the Buddy Walk planning committee. There isn't a meeting in Dec, so we won't be at one until January.
I've been hearing radio ads about the Botanicals christmas lights events and mentioned it to my husband. That might be a fun thing to meet up at! I have been to the Botanicals yet. I heard about that on NPR the other day! They had a whole story about how the old roadside stop/attractions are going out of business because people have dvd players and ipods to keep their kids busy on trips now, so they don't need to stop to see concrete prairie dogs anymore :( how sad

Hi all! We just moved to Kansas from the East Coast back in May. We are in Lenexa right on the DeSoto line. I LOVE Lawrence. There is a great restaurant there, Zen Zero that has really good Tom Yam soup. :wink I wish we had moved to Lawrence but it would have made my husband's commute considerably longer (he works in Olathe). I grew up in a college town and I love the diversity.
I see there is another mama here in Lenexa. I am desperately seeking playmates for my 2 year old DD (and truth be told, friends for myself!). I contacted LLL when I first arrived thinking that would be a good avenue for meeting other AP mamas but we ended up weaning in July and I never made it to a meeting. Maybe I will get going with LLL when this new baby arrives in a couple months.
We have also been going to the Lenexa Community Center on Wednesday mornings for the gym play and we do the library a lot, Shawnee Mission Park and the Lenexa park complex a lot. Any other recommendations on where to go for fun activities for a toddler? Oh, we also were visiting Deanna Rose weekly while it was open for the season.

I'm in Lenexa too, Also moved here this summer from a college town in the east (Tallahassee). I'm going out of town Friday with the two little ones but when I get back I'm going to focus on making some kind of get-together/play date happen for me and my 3 girls.

I love that the dairy uses glass bottles. We buy milk from a farm in Yoder, but they package in plastic jugs and it always drives me crazy. When I lived in California I bought Strauss Family Farms dairy and it came in glass also. You just return the bottle, when you get more milk.
Stay safe with the ice storm everyone. Post here if you need anything or have an issue so maybe we can help one another out.

Of course, as I was falling, my first thought was "Oh no! The baby!" I am 4 wks pg. Then I thought, "thank God I am not carrying one of the boys down the steps."

A big tree just crashed down on our driveway. It just missed the house and garage. Fortunately dh parked in the garage. I think we are stuck for awhile. Our power was out for about 1 1/2 hours last night. Trees are losing a lot of branches and it is very creepy hearing the crack & smash all night.

Wichita didn't get hit very hard at all. It is funny too, the south side of a main street where I live didn't have much ice at all, and then I dropped by a friend's house on the north side and she was totally iced, with a big flood puddle on her street that is now a giant ice slick.
Anyhow, I had no idea it was so much worse in N. Kansas. Stay warm and safe.:cold:

I have not been there, but we can buy their milk at the Hy-Vee store we shop at. That is the kind of milk we've been buying since the first time we tried it. It is hard to imagine that it will melt so fast, but I hope so. My car is completely buried. I am glad I don't have any mamas due right now, it would be pretty hard to get to their births.

Yeah, I have been there. It is upstairs from the natural foods store and next door to the bookstore. I know they sell Bumkins and a couple of other more common brands. They also have slings and wraps and lots of more naturally minded toys. They have a great play area for kids so you can shop while they are occupied.
The natural foods store below is small, but really great and they have delicious deli foods. I really like Newton, dh and I have thought about moving up there.

We moved to KS from the east coast in the late Spring. We are in Lenexa, south of Kansas City.
I have a couple questions that I hope some of you can help me with:
1) Is there any sort of veggie co-op program in my area? I've searched the national database and none is listed. A goal for 2008 is to eat more local, in season foods.
2) Are there any community gardening programs in Johnson Co.? My HOA is really picky about what you can and cannot do in your yard :irked: and I would like a space in which I can grow my own veggies in the summer. This year I did a bit of container gardening and I will do so again but I would like more space.
3) Are there any active moms groups, NINO groups, etc.? I only know a few people here in the area, most of the moms work and I have actually enrolled my DD in preschool because she needs social interaction with other kids. I would love to cultivate more friendships with other moms in the area, even get into child-care swapping so I can go see the dentist, get my haircut, etc. without having to take my DD (and soon to be born DS).
Thanks in advance!

JEB2005, Lenexa has community gardening space at the park just off of 87th and...... Lackman? The park with the barn, you can see the lake from 87th, if you keep going west from there, there's an entrance to the park with a skate park on the left. Follow that drive around, past the pool, and the drive ends with a playground on one side and a field on the other. At the end of the field is a garden. It's apparently open to Lenexa residents, but not sure how to get in on it. We rented in Lenexa before we bought our house and moved elsewhere in the metro. There's prolly a parks and rec number somewhere.
For number 3, check out www.kcapfamilies.com . Another message board, but more a planning spot for get-togethers than just a message board. Playgroups and whatnot. :)

Hi, just catching up on this thread. We lived in KCK near KU Med and just moved to Prairie Village. I grew up in JoCo, so I can handle it (ha ha), but I was going to say to the transplant to Lenexa to check out the Plaza/Brookside LLL (they meet the 1st Thurs each month) because that's where I met a lot of compatible mommas.
Also, there is a lot of food coops but you kind of have to look for them. . .there's a 39th St. Farmer's Market and most people there have some sort of arrangement you can use. I have an email for Kim Wells I will try to post it here for you--she arranges the market. Also have another friend who is involved with that, she's also in the LLL.
I just started work part-time in Lawrence, and I'm looking for AP child care if anyone wants to weigh in.
I also just lost my awesome pediatrician to a hospital in Topeka, and we're looking for someone new. Any suggestions in Joco/KC?

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
I have found a family doctor practice in Olathe that has a more natural, AP friendly approach, Dr. Douglas Brooks at Covenant Health care off of Strang Line. He isn't taking new patients but his colleagues are and I have been very happy with them. They are the only practice I have found that promotes extended breastfeeding and are happy to selective/delay or even omit vaxes in infants and kids. I've only been twice since May but both experiences were positive.

Thanks for the info! We vax, but I want to separate out the MMR and my 9-month old is getting ready for those so I need to find someone who will do it that way. I also am interested in seeing a naturopath or complementary physician, since the only thing I see the Dr. for is vax, we have no other health needs/problems. I usually lie about co-sleeping and downplay the BF (my son has't totally taken to solids yet) because I know what they will say (cry it out and wean) and I'm not interested! I just want someplace to go if he does get sick and I have questions.
We got a really bad bug this winter with puking/diarrhea. Everyone we know got sick too. Then our friend said HER Dr. said it was Rotavirus. But Charlie got 3 doses of the vaccine for this!? Does anyone know about that? Maybe I should check out the vaccine board. . .
Anyway, PV isn't bad, or as I call it, "Scary Village"! I certainly love our house:) I am putting together a mommies do-it-yourself music class on Monday or Tuesday afternoon if you're close enough to come. Rather than pay huge amounts of money for kindermusic. My friends all have great musical talents on guitar, piano, etc. So we are doing it our own way. Feel free to join us!
Here's the info for Kim Wells--they do organic beef, but she has an email list about the market. Go up to someone at the market and ask if they have a co-op/if you can join. This is a good time of year but it's hard to get in because there is really limited shares in most of them. Also check out http://www.kcfoodcircle.org/ if you haven't already been. Contact individual growers to see if they have a CSA or whatnot that you can join. But your best bet is to go tot he market and talk to people.

We have been in Olathe now for two months. We bought our first house here to be closer to DH's work and I love my neighbors, I swear I moved to the best cul-de-sac in town! There are 3-4 home schooling families out of 14 or so, and everyone is super nice and friendly, they have helped us take a big branch down from our tree and one actually helped us unload our moving truck. Olathe gets five stars from me. I was a little wary growing up on the missouri side as JOCO has a bad reputation of being, well snobby, but I beg to differ now. any time we are outside at least one of our neighbors says hi. I have never had such a great sense of community any other place I lived in my life aside from the neighborhood of my youth. Way to go Olathe!

First, thanks for the info. regarding Kim Wells, I will be contacting her for more info. Second, the music class sounds great but I have zero music talent, can't even sing! So, not sure I could add to the group in any particular way. And I am due to have another baby in a month so that is sort of limiting our scheduled activities. I would love to get to know other moms in the area (I am on the Olathe, Lenexa, DeSoto border in a subdivision called Arbor Lake, off of K10 highway) because I really want my DD to have some playmates and for me to have a bit of a social network. It has been a little lonely since we moved and I am extroverted!
As for the naturopath, contact Dr. Jena Kittle at Balanced Care Chiropractic. I don't have her number off hand but she is right off of Strang Line near the Target and she is a chiro, acupuncturist and doula and she has great contacts for alternative medical resources. She is the one who gave me Dr. Brooks name.

Thanks for your comments about my blog. We go to the Wichita Down Syndrome Society meetings every month, so maybe I have met your friend there! I was also on the Buddy Walk planning committee. There isn't a meeting in Dec, so we won't be at one until January..
I clicked on the link for the DSS and recognized some of the people and the background, since it seems like Heartsprings is our second home sometimes. Do you go there for therapies by any chance? We don't live too far from there if you ever want to meet up.

Hi ladies, just thought I would drop in. I never seem to post on MDC anymore, but I live in KS now so I thought I would say "hi".
Is there anyone that lives down in the southern part of the state. I am so jealous of the Dr. that ya'll have been able to find up in the KC area! I live south of Wichita, practically in OK (15 miles) in a very rural very small town.
Anyway, hello to all! and yes, we were enjoying the warmer weather yesterday...........praying for spring over here!

Hi! I'm new here (to the MDC tribal areas, anyway, not quite so new to Kansas. I've spent most of my life in one KS town or another.) I'm currently settled in Goddard, just outside of Wichita. We're closing on our new home in 3 weeks, actually, so I guess I'm really settled here now.
Anyone else in this area, or are almost all of you more northerly and easterly?
And yes, I'm enjoying the somewhat warmer weather, though it's not nearly warm enough for me yet. I'm itching to garden in my new back yard. :D
Anyway, hi! It's good to see I'm not the only one on here from KS.

A potluck sounds fun, but I'm sort of homebound right now. I don't drive, and DH is working up in Topeka area until April. :( Not much chance of going anywhere that I can't walk to on my own two feet.

Are there any events or places to go in your area that you are excited about for summer?

As far as events we are looking foward too...
Well we've got softball, and girl scout camp for my youngest. She's going to church camp for the first time now that she's a big 3rd grader she's finally old enuff to GO!
My older two are looking foward to summer school (not)
but both have mission trips.
my son's trip is local bc he is in jr. high. As a reward they do an obstacle course and Oceans of Fun. both were suprises to him.
They will stay in dorms at a local University.
The jr. high used to go to St. Louis but parents decided to keep the jr. high kids local this yr.
My high schooler is going on a mission trip to Minneapolis put on my a big group that organizes youth work trips.
They also love to go to the pools. Esp Tomahawk Ridge to the "Beach." I think they are all too old to play in the sandbox there now. LOL But I'm sure they will try.

Youngest is doing Survival Camp through the nature center and taking fencing lessons. Oldest is babysitting, doing youth theater and taking tennis lessons. Both will continue music lessons, and probably spend a chunk of every day at the pool.
We might go to New Mexico for a family vacation. Gas prices might encourage us to stay home.
What we are really looking forward to is the Fiddlin and Picking championships at the end of summer and then, right after school starts, WINFIELD! WOOT!! WOOT!!

We were going to go to Las Vegas, NM; some close friends of ours live there. Now they are moving at the end of summer, and gas prices are so high, and Lawrence is so much fun in the summer anyway. We might just stay home.
My youngest dtr and I take fencing lessons through Lawrence Parks and Recreation classes. You have to be 14 to take them, but they let her sign up (she started this spring, when she was 9) if I agreed to take them with her. The instructor is a goof, he's great with kids, and it is really laid back. He also give private lessons, and we've done that, too. The class fee includes fencing gear (though you don't get to take it home), and we used that for a while, but we just bought our own gear since it appears she wants to do this for a while.

A poster from car-seat.org recommend I come here to find some like minded mommies in my area. Here's hoping so! I get strange looks and comments whenever I open my mouth, it seems, these days. :) I live in Shawnee, and I gotta say I was somewhat surprised by the dissing of JoCo, lol. I've lived on both the KS and MO sides, though my mother demanded we live in on the KS side as soon as I was schoolage so I wouldn't fall prey to the KCMO school district. Go mom. lol But having lived part time in Independence with my dad, and seen other relatives homes throughout the KCMO area, I thank God (and mom, lol) we're in JoCo. Anyways - so is there any actual meeting stuff set up yet? I'd love to get more involved with a mom's group at church, but oddly enough, church is one of the main places where my AP ideas get stomped on as spoiling my child. I'm a single mom which further puts me in a minority, lol.

Welcome Angelfire! I live pretty close to you.
My job takes me into a lot of schools, including KCMO, LS, and Ind. Districts.
If things don't change with my son's school we may move over. SMSD is noted to be great on academics but as far as special needs they are notorious for being tough to get services from.
Thanks for the info on fencing. I've seen it offerered thru our county parks and rec and ds wants to do it very badly. Haven't ever known anyone who has done it though, so the info is appreciated.
Does anyone know a good vet in JOCO? I have a sick puppy. 9 weeks old and hasn't had her shots yet (because of wanting to research what is minimally necessary and $.) Like everyone else, waiting on our stimulus check. LOL. Anyhow. I need a vet who is not going to scream at me as the one I found last night for having a puppy who is not yet vaccinated and not going to go a more natural route.

I had no idea! I knew the academics were good, and I know the schools I went to always had special needs kids, but I must say I didn't see them much, I did used to work in the learning center in elementary school, though.

Absolutely! Fairway Animal Clinic. No - they're not the cheapest around, but every last one of the Dr.s knows their stuff. And around here it seems you really do have to be careful - a friend recently lost their dog b/c a vet failed to diagnose it correctly and kept treating it a wrong way despite obvious symptoms they weren't doing what they should. Our dog just had some major problems (trigeminal neuropathy, horner's syndrome) and they were great - even giving us bandaging to use at home and not charging for every single one of the umpteen visits we had to make on a weekly basis for a month. They're awesome. We like Dr. White best, but are happy to see any of them. As for the natual stuff, I can't tell ya there - we do all the vax for the pets. Thanks for the happy welcome. :)
Another note on the schools, its rather ironic to me that my mom moved to JoCo specifically for the skills when I was a kid, but even having access to them, I hope to homeschool my son, who's almost 4.

I definitely hear you there. I grew up in Tonganoxie, going to Lawrence for anything and everything...now I live in Meriden (this place really sucks) and we go to Topeka for groceries, etc. Topeka is so much less clean and less friendly than Lawrence!
What part of Topeka do you live in? Some parts are better than others...Unfortunately, it's the less-good parts that are more affordable to live in. I never would have believed you could buy a whole house for less than $30k! However, Topeka is just too full of drugs and gangs and bad roads and unfriendly people for me to ever move there, no matter how cheap the living can be.
Have you found any particular places you like to shop in Topeka? I've been watching for someplace like The Merc but haven't really seen anything, so we travel back to Lawrence once per month for my shampoo and whatnot.

also i was thinking... in the ap sector there are a few ap minded moms who dont post on ap maillists because their kids arent babies or toddlers. and ive heard it a few times said that people wish that there were moms with older kids that could offer guidance esspecially for people who question thier decision.
i see alot of moms turn around and go mainstream on thier kids once theyre weaned and out of diapers because they dont know what else to do. theres no one leading the way and they feel lost.
i for one would love to see how one ap parents an 8 year old.

Um, if that was me, sorry. :bag: :o Glad you're here, there are quite a few of us in this neck of the woods who aren't going to give you strange looks or comments when you open your mouth. :) In the post you made after this one, you mentioned that you're planning on hs'ing your son. We are in Hiawatha. We like some things about it and some things we don't like. It's a small town. Some people have an attitude about those who weren't born here that surprises me.
My sister lives on a farm in IA and has turned pretty conservative. When she said she started going to church and I asked what kind she was shocked. We were raised Lutheran so that's what she has to be for life. I guess I'm more open minded.
I hope you have a good move. It's nice to live independently.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I live in Topeka and have been looking for other homeschooling holistic living moms in my area. I have two kids, Matt, 15, and Meghan, 10. Matt is bi-polar. I would love to hear if anyone else out there struggles with teens with brain disorders. He goes to public high school and Meghan is homeschooled. I am married to Jeff. I am a nurse at St Francis. That's the basics. I am new to forums and internet abbreviations so please bear with me if I ask dumb questions.

I live in OP. Where are you moving from? What would you like to know? Feel free to PM me. We moved here in 2002 from Arizona and it was a big adjustment for this big city girl to move to the midwest. One lady I knew from another board actually went and scoped out the duplex we moved into for us and the neighborhood because we couldn't make a trip out to KS from where we were at for dh's relocation. LOL. I'd be honored to help you learn about the area.
I see you have a dog. We take ours to Stoll Park where they have a nice fenced dog run. (119th St and Quirvira)
There's also two community centers that we use for swimming and gyms for reasonable price and Johnson County Parks and Rec has been wonderful in terms of a wide variety of activities that the kids have enjoyed.
