We will have a MW attended hospital birth. If it works out as it did last time, I'll be home 4 hrs after labour. We live 1+ hours from the hospital, so I don't want to take any chances. I'd love a home birth!

I had a beautiful idyllic (though looooong! 50 hours prodromal, 20 hours active!) homebirth with Sydney. This time around something inside of me says a homebirth just isn't right. I'm afraid my luck will run out, you know? My husband is shocked & thinks it's just nerves & is planning for our homebirth anyway. Who knows! He might be right. Regardless I'll have the same midwife I had last time... she is amazing (& has very small hands :lol)

I'm planning a hospital birth, though I'm not super psyched about it. I would really, really love to do a homebirth, but, as I think I posted somewhere else in this forum, my insurance won't cover any of the costs. I know that it's not that expensive in the grand scheme of things, but I used donor sperm to get pregnant, and incurred a significant amount of debt during that process. I just don't have the money to hire an independent midwife, and don't feel like I can responsibly take on more debt right now, you know?
It's ironic, since it would actually cost my insurance company a lot LESS to pay for a homebirth. :irked:
Oh well. I am planning a natural childbirth with a midwife who comes highly recommended.

We are planning a home birth this time around. We had our dd at a free standing birth center and I pretty much delivered my dd myself because the midwife somehow wasn't prepared for how quickly my active labor went. So...this time I'd rather be at home. The hospital is less than 5 minutes away so I'm not worried about complications. There are great midwives where we live now and I've got an appointment for next week to start things off. Plus...I really want another water birth. I loved being the in the water and it really helped because of how intense active labor was for me. I was pushing for about 20-25 minutes, and went from 4 cm dilated to 10 in about 1/2 an hour after around 30 hours of slow contractions. So if the next one is the same or more faster (as they say) I'd rather go through that at home than at the hospital if I can.

Well, I guess I'm the odd one out so far--I think (but it's such early days!) I will have another hospital birth. Everything went well for us last time, it felt supportive, and didn't have any interventions or meds. If there was a nice birthing center available, I would definitely go for that, but there's not. One thing I have to say I liked about being in the hospital overnight is that someone else did the laundry and the food (although yes, it was bad but I didn't really care! I was HUNGRY afterwards, lol). And they have cloth diapers and onsite lactation consultants and a place where my dp could sleep in the room with dd and me. So, worked out ok here last time.

I applaud all those so ambitious to do home birthing. It seems quite the popular thing nowadays.
Our hospital and my doc are really great though, and don't push any unnecessary medical intervention so I am confident in doing another hospital birth. We also have genetic abnormality concerns (clefting) which would require special feeding and a doctor referral after.

We will be birthing at a birth center. I don't think know if it is considered "free standing" because it is part of a hospital system but is it's own center, own building, not even on the same side of town as the actual hospital. Someone will have to let me know!
It is the same place where I had my daughter and I was very happy with the care. My midwife is AWESOME and since she does not do homebirths, she is one of the reason I am going with the center again. They offer epidurals and you can even go over to the day surgery center if for some reason you need a c-section. They have hospital beds and the fetal monitor machines as well. So in those ways it is "hospitaly". But on the plus side, they don't even have a nursery and your baby stays with you from the time it is born until the time it leaves...everything is done in room.
I would like a home birth but I live waaaay out in the country and am just not comfortable being this far away. My son's birth (my first child) was very, very traumatic. I think I still have that in my mind. Maybe if this one goes well (as did my daughter's, my second child) then I will consider it for the next one. It takes my brain a while to wrap around things, lol.

A lot of the midwives I know do payment plans and are willing to barter, if you haven't thought of that :) I know what you mean about the insurance - it's so stupid. When I had Henry I could have had a $50 cesarean through insurance but they wouldnt give me a dime towards my $3600 homebirth :bang

We used to live on Bainbridge Island I always wondered about being in labor on the ferry. At least it would be a scenic place to walk on the deck while in labor---and August you'd have good weather to! I just hope you don't miss the last one of the night!

right now, the plan is at home. But I'm realizing we might have some issues. we live in an apt, and have hard wood floors so we can't have a birth pool - we can't even have an aquarium! My friend birthed at a FSBC in sept, and it was great, so I might end up going there.

Ooooh, LiamsMommy, freaky.
Do you mean the hemorrhage was caused by the OB? If so, wouldn't an OB-free birth seem safer? No doubt you see where I'm going with this.

We had my 2nd at home and I don't think I could ever go back to a hospital birth. So we're planning a homebirth this time, too. What makes it complicated is that the nearest midwife is about 2 hours away so we will have a lot of driving to do as far as the appts are concerned. But for me, it's definitely worth it...

Well, I feel really in the minority here. My first birth was a natural labor at the hospital with midwives (quite long), 3 to 4 hours of pushing in many positions, culminating with a c-section. (No details because only happy birth stories for pg women!!!) My second was a natural 16 hour labor in and out of the birthing tub, with a great vbac midwife and a great doula. Also culminated in a c-section. Again, details wouldn't be helpful.
Finding someone to attempt a vba2c, with no history of a successful vaginal birth, is surprisingly hard. Plus the aftermaths of the births were stressful for me (in the first one I wasn't able to meet my baby for 9 hours, in the second, for more than 3). So part of me is resigning myself to csection again, this time with a detailed birth plan that would allow me to hold and nurse my baby while being "repaired" and other requests like a pillow and having my arms not strapped down. Part of me is thinking about joining ican and trying to find a situation were a vba2c could occur. I'm really struggling with this. Due to my particular set of circumstances (and because it is quite illegal in my state) a homebirth vba2c is probably not an option. So it will be a hosptial. I wish I could feel more hopeful and positive about my prospects.

third birth but only the second one at home :(
dh actually asked me if I wanted to UC this time! I told him I didn't think so. It might come to that. I do like the assurance of having my very hands off midwife there. She can recognize a problem and deal with it asap. While having a previous c-section doesn't normally trouble me it does make me more comfortable to think of having the midwife there.

Hey ladies, just found out I'm preggers yesterday morning! :bgbounce: I haven't missed a period yet, but am just about 4 weeks, so I think I'll be due Aug. 31. I guess that counts to be here in the August due section! Lol. We are planning to have it in a hospital because I only have one kidney due to high blood pressure 4 1/2 years ago now. It and that side artery were too small and causing hypertension, so they removed it and I'm fine now, reg BP. So, I want to do it in hospital so that they can monitor my one and only kidney. Its kind of an important thing to have working you know! Ha. But otherwise I might have chose a home birth with midwife. My first OB Appt. is Jan. 23 so keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hospital.
I work there as an RN (ICU step down) and the man works there as a mid-level in the ED. My doctor is very flexible and nice so the man will be catching the baby.
Since I know the policy/procedures in the hospital (manual is easy to get to on any facility computer) I'm sure I'll be a complete pain in the ass. When nurses try to tell me what to do. :wink

I think right now I'm still debating between a birthing center and a homebirth. Since there's no midwife available in my network in a 50 mile radius I was informed that I can find any midwife I want as long as I get her approved. And they will still pay 100% as if I were giving birth in a hospital so YAY for that.

i had quite a traumatic birth experience with my son. it was an attempted homebirth, but he became obstructed, which ended in a transfer, during which he had a very, very low heartrate so the midwife had to tickle his head to keep him with us. it was so scary for me, and i don't think my little guy liked it too much either. all in all, i ended with a flippin c-section, but i still worry about how he was affected by it all.
so this time, i think it will be hospital, and i haven't decided if i will just get a c-section, or if i will try a vbac. i think i will make an appointment with a midwife to discuss it, but the fear from my last birth really colours my confidence about if i would do a vbac or not.

Another hospital birth here. I am just not comfortable doing a VBAC at home, even with having a successful one with DS. I know it is done all the time, but it isn't for me. My hospital birth with DS went very well and I may even opt to not get the epidural this time (it was recommended because of the VBAC) since it only took on one side and that SUCKED!
I had a birth center birth for #1, an amazing mw ass'td homebirth for #2, and am planning a mw ass'td homebirth for #3. I am just praying my mw is available.

I chose free standing birth center, but we're undecided. We may do hospital with our OBs who are super super anti-unnecessary csection and a doula. My last birth wasn't bad except for a few things I'd change. BUT I'd love to have a water birth at the birthing center, it just has horrible hours for office visits and I work full time.

I am still undecided. I am just too nervous to do a homebirth although I think it would be lovely. With my first baby I had a hospital birth and I hated it, mostly because I was tethered to the moniter and could hardly move and was so uncomfortable. I'm going to research the new hospital significantly and if they require constant heart monitering I'm definitely opting for the birthing center.

With our last baby I was out of the hospital within 24 hrs., I like to go home right away, I love home! But I feel more comfortable in the hospital for the birth .... just incase this one decides to try and break the record and be a ten pounder!! :dropjaw
With my largest baby, I only gained 28 pounds. It's just our genetics I guess, my husband was 10 pounds at birth, and so was my Grandmother who was a tiny little woman.

I am planning to have a homebirth, but I still have a little convincing to do to DH. He doesn't exactly think it is worth the money. The way I see it, there is no way that I am giving birth in our hospital ever again and if he doesn't want to spend the money, then we will be having an unassisted birth.

Unassisted at home.
I had my 3rd at home with a midwife, and my 4th at home unassisted. I tried so hard to hire a midwife but there were none to be had. It is the same this time and honestly, I can't see why I need one. Not to mention, if I ever found one, she would be at least a 4 hour car drive away, and I had my last in 4 hours 15 mins, from the time I woke until he was born...

I am planning a homebirth with the same mw that caught my ds. I was "unassisted" in my first birth until 9 cm dilation (first check by midwife) and she pretty much just helped me catch him so I pretty much had an unassisted homebirth with a midwife present last time. ;) I hope to do the same this time but we are in the process of finishing building a house so if it isn't done and we sell our current house I am not sure where we will be living...in that case we may move to a freestanding birth center not far away that my mw catches babies in too. Can't wait!

I live in Wyoming. There are very FEW choices for midwives here- as in 2 or 3. Most who were practicing are now not practicing at all because there was a midwife that was prosecuted this year. :( So... that leaves us with very few choices. On one hand an epidural sounds great but on the other hand, that feeling of snuggling up in my own bed after the baby comes is unforgettable also. We will probably end up going UC with a doula (I did manage to find one who will attend and support at UC) and some close homebirth supporting friends. I don't like feeling like I have limited choices. :( Ideally I would have a midwife here at home to help, but...

We finally decided on a homebirth with a midwife (or two). This will be my first homebirth and a VBAC. When I first started thinking of birthing at home I felt completely at ease about the birth, but now that I've committed to it and have begun reading about natural birth at home I'm feeling more nervous. I think I need to get the facts and read fewer stories. All things said both dh :love and I are totally excited about a homebirth. We live 5 minutes from a hospital so if we need to we can go there. Also, we met with the most fabulous midwife team. Our primary midwife is very calm and listens well, while the secondary midwife (who will also be at the birth) is very knowledgeable about intervening when needed. Meeting the midwives if what changed dh's mind from frightened about homebirthing to excited about it. I'm glad to see so many others choosing homebirthing, it's nice to have people in the same boat, but I also understand about wanting a hospital birth, that's where my first two were born.

After much soul searching and finacial crunching, we are again going with a homebirth. I'm so excited as it's what I wanted from the start but was worried it wouldn't be possible this time around. Woohoo!

Hey Amanda,
And you never know, you could labor at home "too" long and end up with a hb. oops :wink

Well this will most likely be a repeat c-section...or what some peps call elective. I've had 3 already...I've wanted to have a water birth so bad, but I would be so terrified if something went wrong and trying VBA3C...plus I had a m/c in September...so I'm a little on edge.
Hi Forsythia,
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you to get that waterbirth or vab3c or csection that makes you both happy and healthy. No matter what, I wish you a gentle birth experience. You and I both have the same timeline going. Our dc were lost in Sept and our new dc are due in Aug. I totally understand your nervousness. I'll be holding your hand online, will you hold mine?

I will definitely be holding your hand! How thoughtful for you to think of me. Looks like we both have toddlers too! My youngest was born 6/06...:love I'm so sorry for your loss in Sept. Hugs!

We are going to have a hospital birth with a midwife. We are new in town so I have heard diff. stories about the hospital and the midwife. Pros and cons. I'd love a homebirth but the midwife won't accept my insurance b/c they pay next to nothing for the HB. So, we are going to be at the hospital. I had my first in a hospital and everything went alright w/o interventions or meds. It should go fine, I feel more confident b/c it's baby number 2 and so I really am going to stay home very long...I don't want to be at the hospital any longer than I need to.

I am doing it at home with a midwife, but my midwife is just going to be there to 'watch'. I want to deliver my baby MYSELF! My midwife is such a good sport, I can't wait! :love

I'm planning a home birth with a midwife. Will also set up for waterbirth as I really like to labor in the water. My first birth was in the hospital with a midwife.

We'll be having our baby at the Mountain Midwifery Center in Denver. I'd love to do a homebirth, but DH isn't entirely comfortable with that, so this is a nice compromise. Midwives, and a hospital nearby that they use for back-up in case something goes wrong. Non-interventionist care, and they let labor progress as it's going to.

I'm planning a homebirth (my husband's sister homebirthed 16yrs ago, so he's already broke in!). I'll have my Naturopath, who is also a midwive, her friend, a CNM, and a wonderful doula, as I can't doula myself!
I've very excited and everything is falling into place!

We are having a hospital birth. No birthing centers nearby and Dh is not ready (yet) for a homebirth. I would LOVE a homebirth though.

No birthing centers around, and even though midwives are illegal here, I'm going for a homebirth with my wonderful mw!
Ends up that a homebirth is a LOT cheaper than a hospital birth here, too!

We actually ended up having a financial emergency and couldn't pay our MW so we're stuck going to the hospital now.
Although we might end up unassisted HBing.
