View Full Version : are you taking an ipod during labor/delivery?
I'm thinking of buying an ipod for when I labor/deliver (silly?). If you have one, which one do you have? Do you think the 8G nano is enough? or would you go with the 80g classic? I want to be able to store all my music, plus kids music. I figure I'd put speaker docks in the baby's room as well... Will you also take portable speakers with you when you deliver? or just the ear phones? I figured if I end up with another c, it might be nice to have speakers if I'm there for a few extra days...

i have an 80g and that one can hold a TON. I have about 800 songs and maybe like 8 videos or so and its not even 1/4 full yet. If you are a big mp3 user then in the long run 80g might be better but if your not into the mp3 thing or if its just for labor I would get a smaller one.

If you want to sotre ALL of your music, plus kid music, I'd get the 80G one.
I'd take the speakers to the hospital :)

I got my first iPod to use during my son's birth. :lol I used one again with speakers during DD's birth. I agree about taking the speakers in case you don't want to wear the headphones. During DS' hospital birth I wore it on an armband and listened with headphones, during DD's homebirth I used the speakers.

My first was a hospital birth (C-section) and I was there for 4 days. I took my iPod with me with the intention of listening to it, but never did.

The 80g is really huge. I have 1500 songs on mine and it's barely a fraction full. If you're planning on storing a lot of videos it will fill up faster, though. I'm not planning to put any videos or pics on mine, so I doubt I will ever fill it. With just music on it an 80g will hold 20,000 songs.

I have the teeny tiny ipod Shuffle, 1G and it holds PLENTY of songs, you can change the songs via your computer...last time we just brought our laptop and played music, but this time i think i'll have my ipod so i can move easier and focus on the music IN my ears, as well as have a portable speaker. I found that having music on IN the room (via laptop) was too hard to focus on, so maybe in ear speakers will help be more distractable...
i know that's a lot smaller than you were thinking but i feel its plenty.

I personally love music, but not when I'm in pain. I used to get the most horrible menstrual cramps, and listening to music while trying to relax through them made the pain worse, so I figure I wont want music while I'm laboring.

I loved mine for my first birth (hospital). This time i'm planning a homebirth but i'll still have it with speakers in my bedroom!
p.s. mine is the old school 15 gigs one, definitely more than enough storage!

I really want to get one in case I want it. My old one has horrible sound quality and the battery is going so its time for a new one. We'll see, I guess, right?
If I get one I'll definitely get some good quality speakers for this new one and have it ready. I've been collecting songs that hit me as good labor songs for months now, it would be much easier than screwing around with CDs or (lol) mix tapes.

My DP and I, both have the iPod shuffle and have loved it for a year now, and now we are finished with them.
They hold enough even for him (I could listen to the same 5 songs for weeks and be happy that I just have music). The problem is, you cannot choose your songs and the only way to get past music that isn't working for you (very very important during labour) is to hit the skip button. It is often hard to tell what song you've reached if the song has a quiet start, then you just have to skip again. I have a few long albumbs on mine (one of which is Glen Gould, classical music where each song is about 26 seconds - 1 minute but there are 50 of them) and skipping through that gives me a panic attack.
I would say yes to iPod, no to shuffle, yes to headphones AND speakers. My ears are small and they are ALWAYS popping out and rubbing funny. And if you can plans to get into water....I don't suggest anything in your head!
