does anyone have any good ideas for a very CHEAP way to make a wooden play stove? i figure i need a shelf or box of some sort, or some boards that i can easily put together with my crappy drill. i have no experience with wood projects, so if anyone has an idea for something really simple....or a "pattern" online or something. i want to just paint the burners on myself, and if i get really fancy maybe i will put something on for the knobs.... it dpesnt have to be an oven, but if anyone thinks it would be easy to make an oven door that opens and shuts safely for a toddler, do tell! any reccomendations about how to find untreated wood?

I'd be interested in any ideas as well. I want to make a stove, sink, and fridge out of wood, but I think it's going to be expensive. Right now we're using a little tykes one that someone was giving away at a garage sale, but DH wants wooden ones.

We made one easily out of 1x12's. I used wooden knobs. The hardware was the most expensive part. It is cute and easy, modeled after one my dad made me when I was little. i have a pdf file of instructions I can email along with a picture if you are interested. pm me with your email addy if you'd like.

At ds's preschool, they have a homemade stove/sink, and it just is a wood box with hinged door. On top, I think it is paint for the burners and also has a metal bowl (like a mixing bowl) dropped in to a cut out hole for the sink.
Also, when we had ds's home "kitchen" in storage, he was happy pretending boxes with drawings of a stove, oven, and fridge parts on them. I would keep it simple and let your dc's imagination fill in the details.

Here is an awesome one - an entire kitchen - from another board I frequent. It's all from small cabinets by Ikea (real wood - no particle bd)

I believe she also mentions some cheaper cabinets from Target for a more budget minded set. SO creative!!!

I was just thinking abou tthis this afternoon - we have some kitchen cabinets we tore out when we were redoing the kitchen. They seem to be a good height for DD. All I'd need to do is add the top and make burners, etc., for it. I could even get fancy and cut out a space for a bowl (how do I get that fancy? lol I'm not crafty enough to keep up with my dreams lol).
Has anyone else done this? Used an old cabinet? Do you first build a little pltform to set the cabinet on / make it more stable?
Thanks for the ideas, moms!

I'm going to attempt to make this for dd for Christmas this year. I like it because it has more work space than other play kitchens and I love the cutting board. I just wish I knew if it would work to attach a door to the front of one of the shelves to turn it into an oven. Not sure if the shelves would support it.

Dovie---about how much do you think you spent on materials for making the stove? My DH was going to make one Saturday so I'm just wondering what to expect.
Thanks!

I love it! I also want to add the oven door. I have to run this by DH tonight! I'm so excited!!!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the knobs make a clicking sound when turned? I keep thiinking about the card on the bike spokes trick, but can't seem to translate that to a knob on a stove. Any ideas??? TIA

holy blast from the past! i posted the OP in 2003, when ds was just a year old!!!
i never did make the stove.i was really serious about sdoing it but then i think life got in the way. at some point i ended up using a box of some kind. i dont know if it was wood or cardboard, i cant remember. i made black paper "burners" and i think i put some huge buttons or something for knobs. i am pretty sure it wass cardboard :lol
that would be a fun project though..
