i've heard that craving crushed ice is from a deficiency of something but i agree, it tastes sooooooo good!

and it doesn't seem to give me heartburn like drinking water does....

finally an opportunity to use the new smiley! :eat:

My sister (who is not pregnant) just got her test results yesterday from her bloodwork....she was craving crushed ice like crazy and has been feeling very fatigued....she is not just iron deficient, she is extremely anemic. She has what is called Pica, of which one of the symptoms is craving crushed ice.

Not saying that you're anemic but it's very common to be low in iron during pregnancy (I was w/ my 2nd and I am again w/ this pregnancy too) and the craving crushed ice thing would lead me to think perhaps there might be a low iron issue.

I was extremely anemic, but at my last appt. they said that my iron looked great. I was taking iron supplements, but now I am not. Maybe I should try them again.

i think I will ask at my next appt.

I was anemic with the last two pregnancies, and not with this one. (Whoever gave me that tip about cooking in cast iron was SO right.)

But I LOVE chewing crushed ice, pregnant or not. I only like it in tandem with a drink of some sort, though. NOTHING beats milk, Ovaltine, and a couple of cubes of ice whirled up in a blender until the ice is all crushed. It's my nightly treat.

Ice is divine!!! I just had my iron checked and it was great- same thing happened with ds1's pregnancy. I just crave ice when pregnant but my iron levels are not only normal but on the higher side...:shrug

Oooooooh, the crushed ice sounds absolutely wonderful, even though my teeth are WAY too bad to let me eat cold things without incredible pain.

I'm having a horrible time convincing myself that I am NOT anemic, since the midwives just randomly put everybody on Floradix during all of my previous pregnancies, since we didn't know how dangerous iron supplementation could be.

I'm sure my hematocrit is a BIT low, but neither dd's nor my own observations would be consistent with even borderline anemia, I'm just not absorbing the iron in my diet as well as I might. I finally couldn't stand it any more and am upping my intake of alfalfa and nettles, adding in liquid chlorophyll and yellow dock capsules, and also buying oranges when they look yummy to keep up my vitamin C levels which is important for optimal absorption.

I feel better already, but still wish I could chew on crushed ice.

I've always heard that chewing ice (crushed or whatever form) indicates sexual frustration.... but I doubt there's anything to that!

:lol one of the girls at work was teasing me about that after watching me chow down on ice cubes on break. Its strange...for once in my life I'm too tired to feel frustrated...

Only when I'm pregnant, Mindi; normally I'm more relieved that all the manipulation and exploitation and head games are over than I am frustrated.

At this point in the game (33 weeks) I don't think I'd know what to do if I woke up to find Brad Pitt in my bed ready to do the nasty anyway.
