Lame, huh? What are we, a bunch of over-tired, leached-off-of mothers or something?? LOL!

I have a few recent BAD dr experiences to pass on to whomever wants to store it away for future reference...

Nutritionist at Dayton Children's Hospital (unfortunately I don't remember her specific name, I was too infuriated by the time the appt was over). She apparently thinks that RICE CEREAL is the cure to all growth problems. Yep. A baby who has not gained any weight or height in over three months MUST have rice cereal, that's the ONLY way he'll grow. She insinuated basically that I'm starving my poor kid by giving him *just* breastmilk plus a little tiny bit of solids a day (high calorie and nutrient solids, by the way, like avocado, banana, winter squash, etc)

Allergist/Immunologist...Dr Parker. I had heard good things about him...yet he seems to think that it unlikely that a baby would truly honestly be allergic to foods in mother's breastmilk. Intolerant maybe, not allergic. But it's probably just coincidental that he reacts when I eat those foods, but doesn't react when I avoid them. AND he seems to think it's perfectly normal for a breastfed not-in-daycare baby to be sick 8 times in 10 months, two illnesses requiring hospitalization, three requiring ER trips.

ENT...Dr Zeller. Now he wasn't bad...but we did disagree on course of treatment. Connor has congenital conductive hearing loss and consistently fails hearing screenings and has been evaluated as significantly delayed in communication (particularly receptive, slightly expressive). We are almost 100% positive that he is capable of hearing if it weren't for his external ear defects preventing sound from getting into his ears (they did one test where the transmitted the sound directly to his inner ear and he responded appropriately) Taking all this into account, he was initially inclined to "watch him for a while and see if his ears start to grow on their own". !!! Meanwhile, my kid can't hear, can't speak, can't walk or even stand... No, I want something done NOW so he has a chance at normal hearing and speech development. He's 10 months old already! How long are we going to let him go without hearing??

And then the pediatrician I searched so high and wide for...Dr Thomas at Primed Pediatrics in Huber Heights. Good dr overall, and I'm not going to "fire" him yet. However, he thinks it perfectly reasonable to supplement breastfed babies with poly-vi-sol because first of all, they need iron. And don't forget Vit D (because I never ever let my kid get ANY sunlight...sarcasm) plus, it won't hurt the kid any, so why not give them extra vitamins??

And on the topic of iron...we have lab proof that Connor is NOT anemic, yet he still wants me to give an iron supplement "to prevent him from becoming anemic." WTF??? He's starting to eat solid foods now, I'll give him natural iron before I supplement!!!!

Okay...sorry, I meant to just pass on bad dr info, it turned into a vent :)

Good dr info...pulmonologist, Dr Stark. WONDERFUL man, supportive of mother/child. Willing to talk, willing to consider other options, willing to explain things, never ever rushes you, always returns phone calls...he's just, well, wonderful!!

So all that said...how is everyone?? What's up with rain and 60 degrees outside?????? Where's the snow?

Wow mama! I am so sorry to hear of all of your Dr problems. I hope you are able to find the help that Connor needs! I think Drs forget that we don't just have these problems for the 15 minutes we see them... we actually have to live with them every day, all day. And in your sons case, actually mold his future as well.

Hugs to you!!!

I'm doing ok. I can not believe my little guy is already 3 weeks old! Of course I can't believe DD#1 is already half way done with Kindergarten or that DH will be starting his terminal leave in just 3 or 4 months! I don't feel as post partumy (is that even a word? Well it is now...) as I did with the girls. I wasn't depressed or anything with them, but I don't remember feeling so much like myself again so quickly after having them. I actually feel quite normal. It's nice. I am however tired and grumpy today since yesterday every time my little guy went to sleep DD#2 decided to wake up her little brother!! And then at night I seem to just doze because everytime he wakes up I do too to see if he needs anything. (Although, amazingly I feel refreshed and somewhat energetic today too.) Usually he's just moving or something. He has only been waking up twice a night the past couple of nights to eat, but then again he is also staying pretty well attached to me for the few hours before bed time. But I'm adjusting and am mostly happy and in a good mood. Still working on getting back into my groove, taking over my "chores" and creating a new routine that works for me and the kiddos. We're cloth diapering him (ok *I* am cloth diapering DH is avoiding the diapers, but at least he washes them for me...) And BFing is getting better and better each day. Sometimes his latch leaves much to be desired (YOUCH!) but that's mostly at night when I don't even think he really wakes up to eat hahaha. But even that is getting better. I was actually able to fall back to sleep while feeding lastnight. (BTW THANK YOU Bobbi for your help and visual the other day it seriously did helpy me! I'm a visual learner...)
As for the weather, I'm LOVING IT! I mean I love snow and winter and all, but I'm totally in renewal mode right now. Gearing up for all the changes this year has to offer and all that.

Kriket: Your siggy still freaks me out for some reason. :p
Now that you're around I might be getting more into this site.

I totally agree that the weather is nuts!!!

For those other than Kriket, I'm Candice. I have 2 boys: Milo 12-13-06 & Jareth due 5-15-08. I don't fit into the "crunchy category" very well, but I'm interested in BFing resources in the area. It didn't go well with Milo & I'm hoping things go better with Jareth.

Are there any family friendly BFing groups around here? I'd like DF to be able to come too. He is a big part of my support system after all.

WIC at the Sunshine Center is starting a weekly group soon if anyone is interested. :) Maria would be the one to contact there.

Anybody have any breast pump rental advice or know of an affordable place? My insurance covered mine. There's a momma asking on the 2007 thread.

That was me asking about the rental. I'm looking for a medela lactina to rent. Bfing is not going well and I'm currently exclusively pumping for Luke. I was renting a lactina from Medicine Shoppe, but the $60/month is a little too pricey for me. I bought an Ameda Purely Yours, but it doesn't seem to be working near as well as the Lactina, and I'm a little worried my supply might drop. So anybody know where the cheapest place is?

Just wanted to post that I found a place that rents them for $45 the first month and $35 after that. It is in Tipp City called Babies N Blessings if anyone else is looking.

It might be a good idea to go to a La Leche League meeting. I am one of the leaders and my co-leader may have some connections, she is a LC and works for WIC... Give me a call if you need anything, my number's on their website.

Hey Nikki!

Did you like any of those clothes?? How's your little man doing??

Good week for us...more appts for Connor...I'm trying to get his two surgeries scheduled, but it's a logistical nightmare!

I'm busy at work, but logging some overtime (which I get paid for!).

I need more sleep...but what else is new??!! I got six hours the other night (not continuous. of course, Connor got up twice) and it felt so good!! I really think that one 4-hour chunk (uninterrupted) would make me a new woman!

I wish it would snow more...Ian and I need to do some serious sledding!

Ooh Sledding! That would be fun!

The little man is doing mostly good. He has been throwing up a lot but I'm reading that is pretty normal, although Kirsten did too and her ped said she had reflux. Thankfully they didn't try and get me to switch to formula, but they also basically told me she would outgrow it and not to worry about it. She did of course. Anyway. He's even had it come out of his nose a couple times. I've cut out dairy and am seeing if that changes anything. I just started the other day to really make sure I'm cutting it out. I also wonder if he is just swallowing a lot of air, because sometimes especially at night (though he never throws up after bedtime.) he does that hunting thing and grunts a lot and tries to latch but it takes a few times and during that he does seem to suck in some air. I don't know. Other than that he seems to be a pretty happy baby and he sleeps pretty good. I'm working on starting to "school" Kirsten again, since he sleeps for a couple hours during the morning. Yesterday he actually slept good most of the day. I thought that was kind of nice until he woke up at some point in the wee hours of the morning to play. So of course I was awake and playing with him. So I didn't sleep as well as I would've liked. But that's ok. The night before that he slept pretty much all night waking up to nurse a little one time. Although I still wake up everytime he moves or grunts.

I was reading a post on mdc lastnight about moms who are bothered by baby's grunts and stuff at bed time because it keeps the moms from getting good sleep. I thought it was kind of funny, because I totally understand that and it does annoy DH some, but it doesn't bother me too much. Yeah I miss the sleep, but I LOVE watching him as he is stirring in his sleep. I love the sound of his little grunts. I love most of all when he settles in and I realize he sleeps just like I do and looks a lot like me! Maybe because everyone is always telling me my girls look like daddy.

As for the clothes. I am horrible! I still haven't had a chance to look at them, but will definetly do that today. I'm slowly getting my groove back and starting to get things settled again and in order. I still haven't sent out or given out my holiday cards to people yet and I had them mostly ready by the time my little guy was due!!!

Fellow Dayton Moms:

I need your help, if you are willing. I want to try to get MVH to change their policy with regards to family beginnings birth center there. I would like to specifically get them to change their policy towards VBAC patients and not allowing them a natural unmedicalized birth, and also allow them the chance to have a water birth or labor.

I am not pregnant right now, but if we decided to have more, I want my family beginnings birth experience again. I had it with my second child, but was transferred out for my third due to breech presentation and fetal demise. For my fourth I never made it in again she was heads up breech but turned during delivery to transverse, which necessitated a c/s.

Hi!
I live around Dayton too, and know couple of screen names from other places.
2boyzmom, I see your LO is not growing, interesting thing I got into (which is controversial to many people) is reading up on Weston Price nutritional research. Google Weston Price organization and you will find interesting info about breasfeeding mothers diet, especially supplementing with cod liver oil for VIT A and D, eating whole milk raw milk etc., eggs. I know this kind of diet is not in agreement with most people, but I kind of follow it and I have really thick milk and my LO at 4 mo is 18lbs 6 oz. Worth checking.
Also I found out me eating peanuts causes my baby eczema, so yeah your doctor is full of ....

At the risk of sounding "lame", what's everyone been doing lately? This thread has been strangely quiet for weeks!

While I'm at it, La Leche League of the Dayton area is holding some special meetings over the coming months. We have been fortunate to get Tracey Merkle, area nutrition expert, to come and do 4 lectures which are always informative. Here's the schedule:

Feb. 26-Dairy and Soy and the problems with them w/Tracey Merkle
March 25- Couples meeting
April 29- Allergy Season w/Tracey Merkle
May 27- Ear infections, colic, and thrush w/Tracey Merkle
June 24- Toddler meeting
August 26- Pre/post natal nutrition and the introduction of solids w/Tracey Merkle

The meetings with Tracey will begin at 7:00pm at Corinth Presbyterian Church. The Couples and Toddlers meetings will begin at 6:00pm and will be a potluck of some kind:eat:; I will post more details about this later. These meetings are open to dads or anyone else that is interested in these topics.

If you would like to attend a meeting that Tracey is lecturing on an RSVP is requested. Please call the Back to Health Center office at 433-3241 to let them know you plan to attend so that enough handouts can be available.

Hi Heather
We haven't been doing very much. The cold weather has been keeping us in. I'm ready for spring! Luke has been battling a cold pretty much since he has been born. He has it for 10-14 days and then it will be gone for a few days and then come back. It is annoying and I feel bad for him. For good news - Luke is completely on the breast now. Mostly with a nipple shield, but he will occasionally latch without it. It has been a little over a week since I've had to pump. I took the pump back today and I have 545 oz of breastmilk in the freezer! I'll see you at the LLL meeting next week

You might be a good person to ask... Why are there so few couples meetings? I was truly interested in LLL after my first was born, but didn't feel comfortable not being able to have my main support person there to learn with me. We had horrible latch problems followed by health problems & I'm nervous about those things in the future. I've thought about it again since I'm due in May, but I would think an organization like LLL would be more family friendly.

Just jumping in here. I am not sure where you live, but the Troy Chapter of Dar a Luz network (www.daraluznetwork.com) just started in January. For Feb. the speaker is Melissa Stricklin, IBCLC and owner of Babies' n Blessings. She will be speaking about breastfeeding (of courses lol) and pumping, storing etc. with a Q&A session.

Since this chapter just started the group is small, but all are welcome including children and dads :thumb The meetings are the last Tuesday of the month at 7PM. Location: YMCA Miami County-Robinson Branch Troy. St. RT 25 A, just off I-75. (It's basically in Tipp City :wink) more info: Troy@daraluznetwork.com

Wow Jamie,

Have you considered being a milk donor? 545 ounces in your freezer? I have info on donating milk to the Human Milk Bank of Ohio especially if you don't think you will be using it. Don't let it go to waste though! It is a simple process requiring a blood test (that the milk bank pays for) and the drop off in Dayton is Children's Hospital. Your milk would go to help saves the lives of babies who desperately need it.

Cognito,

La Leche League offers monthly series meetings for mothers who breastfeed and include the topics: Advantages of Breastfeeding, Baby Arrives, The Art of Breastfeeding and Overcoming Difficulties, and Nutrition and Weaning. We repeat the topics 3 times a year but every meeting is different and we tailor it to suit the mothers that are present. Most fathers do not want to come to the meetings but we try to occasionally include meetings, like couples meetings, for the fathers who do. The Leaders are unpaid volunteers and it's often difficult to find the time to do lots of extra meetings. We find that many mothers are not comfortable nursing their babies openly in front of strangers, especially men, and asking their questions too, so series meetings are usually women and children only to make all mothers comfortable. Plus it is really nice to have a time specifically for mothers to meet other mothers, become friends, form playgroups, talk frankly about things...consider it a GNO (Girls Night Out).

Dads are very important to have as primary support people. What La Leche League provides is practical experience from trained Leaders who are/were breastfeeding mothers with the most up to date breastfeeding information available. We are always available by phone and at meetings to give help and support as well. We definitely promote the role of fathers but also recognize that they don't face the same things with breastfeeding and birth as women do. They can be great coaches and cheerleaders but sometimes it is important to have women to talk with and learn from that have gone down the road you are on. The benefits in coming to La Leche League Meetings are endless. You have a place to go and enjoy mothers you have things in common with but also welcome babies. It is also a consistent group where the topic is always related to breastfeeding without a sales pitch. We have no agenda other than to help mothers breastfeed their babies.

I hope you will check one of the meetings out. I'm sure you would find it very enriching.

Heather

ok, i'm jumping in here. fellow dayton mama here of two wonderful boys....9 and almost 6. I'm currently pregnant with a little girl who is due around the middle of May.

It was a very rough start at the beginning and I had a lot to battle through and for awhile, I was scared I'd lose her, but with bed rest, meds, and the caring of my wonderful partner....she's thriving and we will be making our 7 month mark next week! YAY!

I went to Jeanna's Dar a Luz meeting at the Greene a couple of Tuesdays ago and plan on going again next month as well.

The doula in me was able to use some connections to get into Dr. Guy's office (i'd worked with them before as a doula and Lisa seems to remember me well enough) and into Family Beginnings. Why so hard??? Because after my divorce, I was left with no ins. and finally got onto Care Source. As it turned out though....NO office would take "new" care source patients and I kept being turned down. (I got three turn downs from Dr. Guy's front desk before I finally asked to speak with Lisa herself)

So...it just goes to show that with a little persistence, things CAN happen for you in wonderous ways.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Thanks Heather. It just doesn't sound like LLL would be the place for me. GNO really isn't something I desire at all. I work 9-5 & we spend evenings together as a family. My 13mo currently goes to bed at 7 too. I'm hoping at some point he will at least stay up to 8 so we can do more stuff. I might see if the WIC meetings will allow dads. DF goes with me to all the appts there. I got a call about a possible group getting together through there from Maria.

Birth is most definitely a money making venture. Well, not if you have a UC. The price of a HB midwife in Dayton was $900 before Dar a Luz. Now it something like $1800.

Thanks Cali for the book info...always good to have a librarian in our midst. :)

This is me today---------------->:cold:

I used to go to Dar A Luz as well...now I go to a friends house and have informal meetings where we get to watch birth videos and talk about how wonderful natural, drug free birth is. We have moms-to-be over and try to fill them full of positive birth stories and try to eliminate their fears. Its a supportive environment without anyone trying to convince or sell anyone on anything.
I found Dar A Luz to be interesting. Honestly I have not appreciated how they've handled their business, so I bowed out...but I do still mention the meetings to many moms to be.
I was around during the situation you mentioned Pinky--I won't go into any details since it wasn't my business. However, it was very suspicious and vindictive--two descriptors that make my skin crawl...so I bowed out.
For those involved with any groups or meetings--I hope they serve you well. We all need to find the right fit for ourselves.

Wow, hi Dayton ladies!!

I haven't visited this thread in a long time, looks like I've missed a bit!! LOL!

First off, for those of you who don't know, Connor FINALLY has a diagnosis...see my siggy for a link. He has a chromosomal deletion that is causing all of his problems. It's SO NICE to finally know WHY my baby has been so sick and we've struggled so much!!! Read my blog if you want details of how we finally got the diagnosis.

I want to quickly throw out a *huge* THANK YOU to the local LLL leaders and friends who helped me keep Connor on the breast and as healthy as possible. This syndrome has the potential to make him VERY sick, yet we've managed to avoid anything major and I owe it ALL to my LLL friends :hug

I wish I could join in on the birthing discussion, but both my kiddos were hospital births, and Connor having this diagnosis of a genetic syndrome pretty much risks me out of any future home birth. Our future children likely have a 50% chance of also having this syndrome (assuming myself or my husband carry the defective gene, we're waiting on genetic tests on both of us right now) I've heard of Dar A Luz, some people seem to like it, some don't. I guess it depends on the person. I definitely don't like cattiness in a group of professional women, no matter who they are. But since I didn't directly witness any of it, I guess I'd give them a try at least if I got pregnant again. I didn't know there was another birthing group around here...I'm interested in learning more I guess. Someone will be getting a PM from me if I'm ever pregnant again! Sometimes I think that a more relaxed setting can be better...

And on a side note... I'm LOVING this snow!!! I know you guys think I'm crazy, but I love snow!!! Yay! It finally looks like winter outside!

Connor has more surgery on Friday in Cinci. Wish us luck!! Then he sees the infectious disease specialist on March 4th, and the pulmonologist the week after. But then we have a bit of a respite from medical things for a while (except for his weekly therapies of course...speech, physical, and now we've added ASL classes)

Anyone here familiar with immune disorders? Connor has low t-cell lymphocytes which is common in his syndrome...hence the visit to the infectious disease doc.

Stay warm everyone!!!

My 20 month old son Benjamin and I are visiting right now, and haven't been out much because of the weather, but I was wondering if there were any special things to do in the area? I am from Oklahoma but my parents live in Centerville/Washington Township. My 20 month old son Benjamin and I are visiting right now, and haven't been out much because of the weather, but I was wondering if there were any special things to do in the area? I am hoping to visit Trader Joe's because we don't have those in OKC and I have heard good things about them, but what else is around here? We will be here for another week or so.

http://www.metroparks.org/_home/eventResultsParent.aspx

You might check into one of these events. The Infant one of course is for babies up til age 2. The stroller one is up til age 3.

The Dayton Art Institute is also a fun place.

Hope that helps at least a little!

Sweet Feet,

I co-lead three groups, East Dayton-Kettering (2nd Tues of month 7:00), Greene County (1st Wed. at 10:30), and Huber Heights (3rd Tues at 10:00). You should come to the meeting next Tuesday night at Corinth Church (where we have the EDK meetings) that Tracey Merkle is guest speaking at. She is really terrific! I posted info about it on page two of this thread. Let me know which one you are interested in and I will send you the directions and stuff.

Its quite a drive from centerville (45min i'd say?) but Jungle jims is bigger and more fun than trader joes. I love trader joes and I shop there all the time but as far as looking for something fun to do, it would be more of an adventure. http://www.junglejims.com/

Check your local library for story times. I think there is a story time, not sure what ages, at Starbucks in Oakwood on Monday mornings. Last I heard they had free hot chocolate.

Hi everybody, it has been a while since I've posted, but I just found out that I *may* be pregnant, and I am having no luck searching for a homebirthing midwife. I was hoping some of you ladies from the area might be able to give me some refferals! Thanks in advance =D

Busymama07---I say wait until you are sure you are pregnant before you interview midwives.

When I was pregnant and interviewing HB midwives, I was sad to learn that there was only one willing to attend a birth for a first time birther (me). Now however, you have more options. :)

Busymama07--

If you don't find what you want in a midwife in the Dayton area try Cinnci, Columbus, even surrounding states. There are other midwives around who will take you if you're willing to do a little driving.

Given the legal climate right now you'd probably be hard pressed to get specific names of midwives posted online. I suggest mentioning it at a dar a luz meeting, a LLL meeting, or other meetings to try and get acutal names.

Here is something that we can focus our energies on as well.

How about natural birthing for those who have had a c/s. No place in this area will allow a c/s to waterbirth or labor, it is in this area turned into a fully medicalized experience.

I am not prego right now, but feel that since FB wont allow VBAC's I have no choice but to homebirth. No clue if any home birth midwifes will do VBAC's, so it leaves me with basically a UC.

Oh, and to the person who had a time finding a provider with CareSource ---

Trust me, I so understand and know what you mean. The few OB's who are taking new patients only are allowing a limited number per month you are due (ie like 2 or 3 Caresource patients in the month of December). I swear I called the entire list, and one of them actually refused me as a patient because I didn't want pain medication.

Right now, you are basically stuck with one of the four clinics (Berry Clinic - but good luck getting in before you are 1/2 way done with your pregnancy; Women's Center on 1st Floor Berry Building; Southview's Clinic - too many hoops to jump through -- meet with a nurse takes about 3-4 weeks to get - go over history and pregnancy testing, etc, then another 3-4 weeks before first OB apt; then Lifestages).

Hey! It's me, Bobbi, from the other group! :)
Yes, our options for birth are always limited by insurance, then by Drs willing, then by their regs/rules. HB is a valid and valuable choice for us. Yes. there are birth attendants who will work with VBACs.

Now...I want to address the term MIDWIFE. "A person, usually a woman, who is trained to assist women in childbirth." So...define 'trained."
In our community we seem hesitant to call a person a midwife--especially with the political climate right now. Some think a degree program is necessary...some believe experience is the key. Regardless of which way you lean I will tell you this...we do not have any practicing homebirth midwives in this area that are CPMs or CNMs (there may be one in Cincy, but not sure...). The 'birth attendants' in this area are diverse. One has been doing births for many years (15+??), one is a paramedic, one is a medical massuse, most are doulas, one specializes in herbals...

I can guarantee that if you wanted to have a VBAC at home there would be MWs, attendants, or whatever you want to call them, there for you.

How was Connor's surgery? I hope everything went well. Are you going to teach Ian ASL too? The library has some Signing Time DVDs. I'm not sure how you feel about TV, but they are only 30 minutes long and Lyela loves them!

Ok, so what are some of the upcoming kids sales in town...I have become addicted to shopping for girl clothes, and have to pair down my spending a bit ore we will be in the poor house.

Also, are there any groups for learning scrap booking?

Just another note on the Signing Time DVDs. You'll have to request them, and there is a line. I've been waiting almost 2 months for the Great Outdoors one.

The Kid's Sale at Christ United Methodist is April 19.

Mark your calendars for the next Kids' Sale on April 19 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tons of "nearly new" items will be available: stollers, cribs, pack-n-plays, high chairs, outdoor toys, clothing, books, games, vidoes, and more! This sale benefits local charities as well as the Children's Ministry here at Christ Church.

We are currently accepting donations of new or gently used items for babies and children.

For more information, please contact Carrie Hauser (937-293-3151) or thekidsale@christumc.org.

I'd love to hear about other ones. I got a lot of clearance shopping done for DD last year, but we didn't have any ultrasounds so I could only get gn things for DS. And there aren't much of those!

There's a new scrapbooking store in Kettering Towne Center. There may be groups there. I know that there is a group that meets in the Wilmington Stroop Library and every Monday there are breastfeeding/scrapbooking meetings at the Sunrise center. I've been considering getting into digital scrapbooking. The only time I can scrap is when DD is napping and then most of my time goes to lugging out all my stuff and then putting it away. I found a site that prints 12x12 pages for really reasonable prices. Scrapbooks Please (http://www.scrapbooksplease.com/index.aspx)

I have made a few digital pages through Sam's Club for about $1.86 a page (like an 8X10 size). I did these for DS1's preschool field trips this year.

There was just a kids sale posted on Craigslist for like early march in fairborn/yellow springs area.

AprilMay-

I'm SO sorry I didn't respond to you! I haven't been back to this thread in a while...I spend all my time over on the special needs forum (come on over and meet all my virtual friends!)

Connor's second surgery went well, I wrote all about it in my blog, you'll have to go down several posts to find it, it was an action-packed adventure getting to and from Cinci :)

Connor's surgeon wants him to wear hearing aids, but because of his ear deformity, he can't wear ones in his canals, so he has to have bone conductive hearing aids. We go back to Cinci on Mar 24th for a follow-up, repeat hearing screen (post surgery), and hopefully to be fitted for the aids!

Yes, we're teaching Ian ASL also. He knows all the animals and about a dozen words right now. He learns really quick! Connor understands the concept of signing, I see him "hand babbling" a lot (when he's independent playing he moves his hands all over and stares at them inspecting them...kind of like babbling with his hands!) He has two or three signs he knows on his own, and he responds to several others. He's coming along!

:)

*waves* Hi! I'm not new to MDC, but another thread made me wander over to FYT in the hopes of finding more mamas in my area.

I'm not quite "in" Dayton, but I'm not quite "in" Cincy, either, so I'm a mama w/o a tribe. :(

DP and I currently have two older girls, 11 and almost 9. We'll be jumping back on the ttc wagon as soon as the RE calls us to let us know we're getting to the top of the donor embryo list. (Should be between May and July)

*When* (being optimistic!) I get pg, I WILL have a vbac. I'm leaning largely toward a homebirth, but have some Cincy ICAN recommendations for a vbac friendly OB in the back of my mind as well.

But, hey y'all! I so often feel like I'm the only (pick a descriptor) lesbian/liberal/mainstream-questioning/non-sports fanatic in the area!!! Nice to see there are people who have some similarities here!

For the first two months of my baby's life he was unable to nurse, so I pumped exclusively for him. My milk supply was so abundant I ended up with over 500oz in the freezer in a little over a month. I have donated around 300oz of that to a friend in Wa state. I have about 200oz that still need a home. now that my baby is fully on the breast there is no way we will be able to use it before it expires. So if you or you know of someone that is in need of bm please let me know. The milk needs used in the next month or so.

Ladies,

If you are looking for something fun to do with your families tonight stop out at the La Leche League Breastfeeding Celebration at Delco Park in Kettering! We have the Mayor coming to sign a proclamation making May 9, 2008 La Leche League Day, Kettering's Police and Fire Departments coming with a squad car and fire truck, and lots of great things that we have to raffle and auction off. The Celebration is from 5-8 at the picnic shelter!

I wanted to check out the BFing Celebration at Delco Park, but was still in the hospital with my new little guy. He made his debut May 6th by emergency cesarean & then had to stay an extra day for jaundice. My milk didn't come in until day 5 so we did supplement for a few days to battle the jaundice, but now he is exclusively BFing. I'm sooo happy!
I hope the event went well. I had my own special event... I spent Mother's Day with the 2 sweetest little boys ever :)

ETA: Southview has become much more baby friendly since I had my 17mo. They had my baby to me within 30min of surgery so I could BF. They do more testing in your room & encourage rooming in now. The LCs were really helpful & were quick to get me a pump to stimulate supply since I was having trouble & upset about supplementing. The hospital was also very accommodating & gave us guest status to stay with our baby the extra night he was under the bililights. They might not be the crunchiest, but it was an excellent experience

Thanks for asking about our event, it went very well. The turnout far exceeded our expectations, especially considering the horrible weather. I would guess we had at least 150 including children. It was so nice to see all the like-minded mamma's in one place. Another exciting part was when the Mayor read the proclamation that declared May 9 La Leche League Day. He said quite a bit about how breastfeeding is the best for moms and babies, how it needs to be supported, ect... It felt like a historical moment.

Congradulations on your new little one. Enjoy!

I'm glad to hear that it went so well. I would have really loved to be able to attend a family friendly event like that. We do everything as a family so it would have been great. We haven't been able to get out as much lately. Hopefully it will be an annual thing & we can make it next year. :)

Hey Kriket!
I'm sure enjoying my time off, but I do miss the silliness at the office. How's office life treating you? We decided on nicknames for the boys. Their official nicknames are Mighty Midget & Mini Midget for right now. :) Milo is doing better with Jareth, but I still don't think he knows what to make of his little brother. Jareth is already over 7lbs so the BFing is definitely on track. I'm loving that sling I bought. I've used it grocery shopping twice now. I haven't tried it for NIP yet since we only make short trips & I'm still a little dependent on my nest of pillows to get comfy. I think it will work once he's a little bigger & less squiggly. Well there isn't much more of an update. You'll probably see me here a little more. My other site is having issues. :( I might get on messenger sometimes too. If Scott gets too fluttery, then remember there's always that back up plan. ;)

Is she doing better now that you are dairy free? I did find someone that is looking for bm for her adopted daughter if you are interested in donating.

She is doing great since I am dairy free. Unfortunately Aidan left a gogurt wrapper laying around and she found it...her poor face, chest and hands were nasty looking for a bit.

Need ideas on where to look for the as needed child care provider. I need child care as needed, and it will probably be a lot this summer as I am trying to get back into working a lot.

The boys will be in camp 1/2 days for about 5 weeks, and then there is the little girl.

Anyone have recommendations. I would prefer someone close to downtown so there is not a lot of driving.

Hi all!

We are coming to visit my in-laws in a couple of days and I wanted to ask you a couple of practical questions...

1) WHere can I get seventh gen diapers (or the like)? I am thinking Dorthy Lane?

2) Is there a second hand place where I could send my in-laws to look for a booster seat? Our hook-on-the-table one dosn't fit with their table.

THey live in Kettering. Thanks much for your help!

Hello!

Since #1 has been answered, I'll move on to #2. There is Once Upon a Child (http://ouac.com/) located in Beavercreek and near Showcase Cinemas. There is also Kidz Again (http://www.kidzagain.com/) in Centerville.

In Ohio it is illegal to sell raw milk. Now, you can purchase a share in a cow on a raw milk farm and get your milk that way from any of the cows on the farm, not just yours.

Go figure.

BTW - are you looking for a high chair or just a booster to sit on a chair at a table? If you can promise I will get mine back, I think I have an extra i can loan you right now.

Ladies:

I need ideas on where i can purchase baby foods (ie finger foods) that are dairy free.

Our Ped wont come out and say it, but I think DD2 is allergic. She got a piece of DS2's mac n cheese and broke out with red blotches. A week later she found one of his yogurt wrappers and her breaking out was much larger and worse (entire mouth area instead of just a few spots, was also down a bit on the chest, her knuckles that came into contact with the yogurt, and she also started to get little hive like bumps in the red spots). There were things also early on, that lead me to become almost completely dairy free in my diet.

But she is really enjoying some finger foods now - mostly teething biscuits. But everyone I have found except the occassional box of Nabisco at Big Lots has dairy in them.

She is also not a huge fan of baby foods yet...she would rather have the bowl and spoon and food to make artwork all over herself, the floor and her clothes.

Our ped is Dr. Blumberg with Ohio Pediatrics. I like her so far. I guess I'm just thankful she took a "difficult" patient such as myself after Dr. Seiler dropped us. :wink No one in the office has ever messed with our intact son. She's really cool with my vax plan, although several nurses have been not-so-supportive. She's pro breastfeeding, although I don't know how she is with extended breastfeeding because we just started going to them when Yuri was 2 weeks old. You do have to see a nurse practitioner every other visit, and I'm not impressed with her. She comes off as someone who always tries to find something wrong. We just went for a check-up and she commented that we'd have to keep an eye on my 4 month old's bowed legs. Show me a 4 month old with straight legs. Seriously. :eyesroll

Dr. Julie Myers in Centerville is ok, she has no problem with non-vaxing parents, but did try to talk us into circing...

Dr. Eberhart at Cornerstone in Springboro is good, but his office seems very pro-vaccination. I guess it depends if you're ready to stick to your guns, as with anyone. No problems with circing, very pro-breastfeeding.

We see Dr. Eberhart at Cornerstone. He has been really awesome with my kids, supportive of extended nursing and doesn't mind that we don't vaccinate. We saw Dr. Ellis the last time for my 6 year old's well check and again she just noted that the chart says we don't vax, I confirmed and that was the end of it. And I agree with Devy, they don't talk down to me and they will take as long as we need and listen.
Recently my son has been diagnosed with a speech delay and the office was super quick about getting the forms to Dr. E to sign and fax back to the speech therapist. It made getting him into therapy go smoothly.

I don't personally, but I know many who've said they've had really great experiences with them. My backup doctor is Dr. Horlacher and he is REALLY great! He uses the brithing center there, too. Actually, Dr Horlacher and Dr. Guy use each oher as backups for the birthing center. They both seem to be very natural/realxed-birth friendly.

Does everybody know someone who works there? Seriously! My friend's cousin works in the office, too. She was asking if I was interested in getting free gift cards or something by participating in one of their studies. :irked:Yeah, that will happen. Give me a $10 WalMart gift card and I'll let you test a meningitis vax on my baby. :thumb

I wish we lived that close, especially with gas prices.

That meningitis vax study irks me! We do vax, but my baby isn't a guinea pig. What made me more annoyed is that it was grandma giving us the info! :eyesroll We already stay in the office for an extra 30min or so to watch for reactions. They know I'm not fully vaccinated due to alleries. Why would I want to experiment?

They always ask us about carseats. It's on their checklist of things to ask at well checks. Milo was 20# at 9mo & the NP said make sure to keep him RFing til 1yo. I told her he would be RFing longer than that since our seats go to 35#. Then she argued that we only have to do it til 1yo so why do it longer. :irked: They only give the bare minimum requirements by law & never discuss best practice.

It's weird they ask us about different things. They never ask about sleep training, just if he sleeps on his back in his own bed. I just say yes. We're part time co-sleepers. :wink If somebody doesn't feel good, needs snuggled or is scared of thunder, then they can camp out with us for a while.

I find myself fibbing more & more often. Really, I go to them for medical stuff & keep tabs on growth curves. My 18mo still gets a bottle once a day, we're not worried about using an open cup, the boys can sleep with us if they need extra attention & we're cautious with new foods. I just tell them the "right" answers to all the questions. :thumb

My posts are starting to get long. I think I need more adult interaction. :)

Unfortunately you don't get to pick who will have most of your appointments and attend your birth. I specifically asked to have most of my appointments with Margie but they prefer to have you rotate through the three of them. Not that it mattered, since Dr. Woods ended up attending my birth.

Thanks ladies!

MedMart on Smithville had ones available for sale. Geneva at WIC explained how to get one purchased through insurance. MedMart faxed the paperwork to my doctor & my OB filled it out & faxed it back to them. All I had to do was go pick it up.

I absolutely love it too! I may have a chance at getting my supply back up. It's the one built into the bag with a cooler section. It only takes me 10 minutes vs 30 minutes with my Avent manual (which I still love). Now it's easy to pump every 2 hours.

I'm also meeting with Frankie at Southview tomorrow for a lactation consult. Hopefully I'll be able to get Jareth to latch right. That would be way better than pumping all the time. Anyone have experience with a baby that bites or chomps? He's only 6wks old & he's not teething. I wonder if he picked up bad habits from supplementing & being weak from jaundice. My milk took forever to come in it seemed & he was severely jaundiced. I held off as long as I could with the supplementing.

I found out my dentist is BFing friendly. I went in today with an infection in my gums. He gave me a fax number to have the ped send a list of safe antibiotics. This makes me happy! The nurse practitioner at my OB's office wouldn't even look for a safe antibiotic for me when I was pumping for Milo & I had to pump & dump. Needless to say I complained about her & never see her anymore.

I'm rambling again...

Thanks again ladies.:)

When Luke was born he didn't know how to nurse properly. He looked like he was latched right, but he wasn't sucking right. He was chomping. I didn't discover this right away and ended up with seriously sore & infected nipples at 10 days pp. After talking with my ped and a LC I decided to completely take him off the breast and do straight ebm until my nipples could heal. That took about a week or so. I then started trying to get him back to the breast. At this time we still didn't really know why he was causing so much pain, because from the outside everything looked correct. I met with several LCs including Geneva & Linda over the next couple of weeks. We decided that he wasn't sucking properly, but chomping. We had him checked for tongue tie by Dr. Notestine and he was fine. It was the conclusion of the LCs and Dr Notestine that he couldn't use his jaw muscles properly. I started taking him to a chiro - Dr Dunnington. After about 8 visits with the chiro his jaw started loosening up and he was starting to use his jaw. By this time though he was pretty nipple confused. He didn't want to latch more than a couple sucks. After 12 visits at the chiro she said that he should be able to nurse effectively now. So, after reading on kellymom I decided that we needed to get over the nipple confusion. I finally was able to get him to nurse using a nipple shield after about 3 months of being ebm only. I was able to wean him off of the shield when he was about 4 months old and we have been exclusively breastfeeding since then. He is 6.5 months now. At the beginning I didn't ever think we would see the day that he would just latch on to the breast happily and cause no pain. I'm glad I stuck with it. Geneva & Linda should be able to give you names of chiros if it is something you want to look in to. I don't know if it will be cost prohibitive though if they don't take your insurance. It cost us over $500.

I was lucky in that I didn't have supply problems to overcome. I had an overabundant supply and ended up with over 500 oz in the freezer that I have since donated to other moms. Good luck working through this. Have you been able to go in and see Geneva?

Thank you!

You're giving me some hope. I saw Frankie at Southview on Friday. I can't get Geneva to return my calls. I'm thinking she might be really busy since Maria is on leave.

Frankie said everything looked great, but my letdown was too fast. (She accidently got shot when she was checking my breast... oops!) She recommended some new positions with baby more upright. She was thinking that might be causing the problem. He wouldn't chomp while I was there (of course). She suggested spending 24 hours in bed & nursing on demand. I made it 16 hours & am still on the verge of tears. It's like the very tips are blistered. It kinda feels like fresh rugburn. I'm supposed to call to check in tomorrow with how it went. Maybe I can get some help using a shield. I haven't been able to get the hang of it on my own.

I guess I'm back to pumping for now. It is helping me to have the new pump. It's quick & easy to stay on scedule. Plus it has made a slight difference in supply.

I really appreciate you sharing your story.

I had a little bit of trouble getting a hold of them also and then I had to wait a couple of weeks to get in to see them. It was a pita. I would just keep trying. Linda also works there which is who I my appointments were with, but she had Geneva come in also since she was a little stumped. My letdown was also very fast and furious which caused issues. Have you been to www.kellymom.com? Also have you been able to get in touch with a La Leche League Leader? They are often more accessible and should be able to give you in person help. If you don't know any let me know and I can give you a contact. What city are you in? The getting in bed and nursing is great for upping supply. They recommended it to me, but like you after a short time I was in serious pain. I would try to stay away from the shield at this time, because it can cause supply issues and since you already have a low supply you don't want to cause even more problems. They also tend to suck on it more like a bottle than a breast. Have you tried any suck training with your finger?

Again, thank you so much! I'm new to all this. I didn't make it far with pumping for my first because I was really sick & didn't know about all the resources available. Now there's a chance at success.

I think Ian has Chicken Pox. He has about 20 on his scalp, and 10-ish on his back/shoulders/neck. They started as what I thought were bug bites (we were on my mom's farm in Michigan this weekend, so it was plausible) but then got scabby and now are yellow crusty. I started getting suspicious when I realized that he had none on his arms or legs, and he was wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts all weekend, so he should have *some* bites on his arms or legs.

I got really suspicious when I noticed two spots on Connor tonight, I KNOW he didn't have them this weekend, they're on his back along the waistband of his diaper.

I am nearly 100% positive now because I went to talk to the neighbors and both of their girls have a few spots as well. Both neighbor girls had the vaccine and also had confirmed chicken pox last summer (mild case), so I guess they're just the unlucky ones that not only get CP despite the vax, but get it more than once!

I haven't decided what I'm going to do with Connor yet...I'll call his pediatrician and infectious disease/immunologist first thing in the morning. Chicken Pox is one of the viruses I was cautioned about when his immune deficiency was discovered. He is at high risk of complications. However, his latest lymphocyte levels (tested May 30th) were almost in the normal range (following a month of Ceftriaxone via a PICC line). So maybe now's a good time for him to get them, if there ever is a good time.

If I get it confirmed that we do indeed have Chicken Pox, our house is open to anyone who wants to "visit"! Ian's first spots showed up Saturday night, and they're still weeping, so he has a few days of contagiousness left. Connor's spots still look like bug bites, no blisters yet (as of bed time at least) so he has perhaps a whole week of being contagious still.

PM me if you want to come over and I'll send you directions :)

I'm having some issues with Dr. Guy and the midwives (which I'm seeing more and more as common right?! *sigh*) I have caresource and I've already registered at family beginnings, who else delivers there?

:(

Anybody here feed their dog a RAW diet? I'm going to be switching my dogs over and I'm looking for a cheap local supplier for meat and bones. Does anybody know of any local butchers or someplace else I should look?

Ok ladies I need some help.
I have Caresource & a Rx for a pump rental, but I can't find one! So far MedMart, Advanced & Able Care either don't have or don't carry them. MedMart said maybe next week.
I'm googling & calling around, but if any of you know someplace that usually has them in please let me know.
I have 3 Medela pumping kits already so that's not a concern.
Thanks in advance to anyone that has ideas.:)

I just talked to Geneva at WIC & she's helping me coordinate a possible purchase. :)

I have one you can barrow until you can find one. I have a Lactina Select. I think Hocks pharmacy, or Good Sam Hospital might have them in their pharmacy.

their is a butcher on smithville that has bags of bones for pretty cheap. can't remember the name, it's right there before you get on 35 it has some generic name like "east daton butcher actually I think that is the name. :lol

my dogs are raw, We can get chicken backs and things from there pretty cheap too. My dogs love tofu too, and eggs, but they only get them occasionally. They LOVE seaweed like kombu after I make stock and Nori. Really don't try to feed your dogs a "special" diet, just buy what you normally eat (if you eat meat) in a less processed form and they get the scraps.

we should go to the dog park some time and have a doggy play date!

Thanks Kriket. I will have to check them out. I'm planning to follow a "prey model diet" I don't think we eat enough meat (or have enough leftovers) just to give them the scraps. I have a 12yo American Bulldog around 70lbs and a 8mo Bullmastiff that will eventually be 100+

man, you're going to be needing a lot of chicken! Also if you know any deer hunters, once deer season is over deer carcass is perfect for dogs! I have a 5 lb min pin and a 40 lb Australian shepherd so, they are cool with a people sized portion! :lol

Yeah I can't wait for deer season because my dad is an avid hunter. I will have plenty of venison. My sister actually still has some left in her freezer, but she is thinking of doing Raw too, so I'm sure she will use it

mamas, are there any really cool farms local (ie moped-able distance I don't have a car) that have tastys? I could have swarn there was one that has FR chicken and things on dayton-xenia. I know Frank's will be opening soon, and I've thought about taking the bus down to the 2nd street market. Has anyone ever been there? I hear that its cool, but is it 'cool-cool' or soccer mom 'lets get an organic latte' cool? RTA kinda scares me, COTA in Columbus was WAY easier to figure out. Really I just need eggs and cheap seasonal things that I can can (<-hehe) and dehydrate.
Or if any of you pretty ladies have anything that you are trying to get rid of we can work something out!

Does anyone know of a good gynecologist in the Dayton area? I need someone who is wholistic and open to talking about alternative remedies.

TIA

Kriket,

The 2nd St market is just ok. It has been better in the past, although I have not been there for a while. They don't have many restrictions (if any) on what they allow people to sell, meaning a local farmer could sell tomatoes that he ordered from another state, thus he he did not grow them locally. So in this case you are supporting a local farmer, but not local crops. Some of the vegetables are organic and some are not. Some of eggs are free range/organic and some are not. Then there are the small farmers that don't have the money to pay to be certified as an organic farm, thus can't call their eggs organic but still practice organic farming.

The market management is also not very professional or respectful to the vendors, but shopping there does give you an opportunity to support smaller often family businesses that are mostly local. The market has lots of crafts, gifty things and food serving vendors and less food than you would think, or it did the last time I went.

Are you scared of the bus for safety reasons or because you think you'll get lost? If it is safety reasons, don't be. I don't think you'll have problems on a Saturday morning. The RTA has a number to call to help you as well.

not scared for my safety, I'm a 'grain fed' farm girl so not a whole lot shakes my confidence. Mostly that I will get lost :lol which is a very real possibility. COTA runs in circles, where RTA seems to run from downtown out, then back in I imagine, just doesn't make much sense to me. I may go check out the market saturday. I anyone wants to come out too you can't miss me, I have red dreads :D Just come up and throw up 'yo MDC sign.

The midwife that I am seeing for my prenatal care has gynecological patients as well. I love her dearly and plan on seeing her as my gyn after the baby too. Her name is Pam and she works with the midwives of Good Sam. Call the Lifestages office there (they have reg. doctors too, and as a warning, their office/nursing staff can be offputting as they aren't as warm and loving as the midwives) to set up appts, etc. (937) 277-8988

Hello, I’m kinda late with this post, but I’m 22 weeks pregnant with my first and in the Dayton area. I’m a patient of Dr. Horlacher(and I guess Dr. Woods), who is pretty cool so far.

However, can anyone tell me how he is as far as low-intervention births? Unfortunately, I have no support for a low intervention birth. My mom had all her kids delivered by a general surgeon, and my peers that recently had kids all say “get that epidural, girl!”.

I don’t want a heplock (I’ve been hospitalized a few times and even the dimmest of attendents can find my big ol blue veins) and I want to avoid an epidural if at all possible. I’m open to other possible pain management, but I’m just not sure what’s out there.

I read that Dr. Horlacher uses the Family Beginnings center too. Like the water birthing center? Sweet, I would love to use that if he’s the Dr. there too.

When should I talk to him about all of this? I know I’m probably late but I’m just so lost with this.

I’m getting the Bradley method book for my SO and I to read. I’m not sure if there’s a Bradley instructor in the area. I’m just a little terrified of giving birth because it can get so medicalized so quickly and I have no support except for my SO.

From what I hear about Dr. Horlacher he is one of the most natural friendly Dr.s in the area. I believe he does attend births as Family Beginnings. Talk to him sooner than later about the birth your are hoping for ;) Yes, there are Bradley classes in the area.

Also get yourself a good doula :thumb

Dr Horlacher & Woods were my OBs for my last birth. It was a water birth and completely intervention free (no drugs, iv, heplock, AROM or constant monitoring, minimal vag exams). Dr Woods was completely hands off during the entire thing. Even during pushing/delivery he just watched. I'm the one that "caught" Luke and brought him to my chest. I suggest you talk to them about your wishes at your next appointment. They both deliver at Family Beginnings and that is definitely where you want to go for an intervention free birth. There are a few extra things that you have to do to be eligible for Family Beginnings, but if you call them they will tell you what they are. Off the top of my head you have to take a childbirth class, go on a tour, be completely low risk and have a pediatrician that will discharge the baby within 24 hours after birth.
I took Bradley classes with my first and they were great. You can find Bradley instructors here:

I think cost varies. I haven't used a doula, because I didn't know about them with my first and I felt comfortable without one with my second, but they are generally highly recommended
