Yeah, I know this is a bit early...:nut

Anyway, when my mom was still having babies there was no choice, everyone wore cloth diapers.
When my sister had her first baby, 15 years ago, my mom claimed cloth was just better all the way around and bought my sister a thingy with a diaper service. She used it for about 3 days and said her son had a constant rash from the plastic pants/rubber pants/what ever they're called that go over the diaper to keep everything from getting flooded.
She switched to disposable and he never had another rash ever.

I would really rather use cloth for both heath and green reasons. I've looked at several different sites and boy have cloth diapers come a long way from my mom's triangle with a big safety pin.

So what's the real, new low-down on cloth diapers.
Are there simply some babies that can't do it?
Is there a better alternative to the plastic pants/rubber pants/what ever they're called that go over the diaper to keep everything from getting flooded?
What is the best and most affordable site to go to? I'd really like not boring, nasty white, but I think organic is much more important.

www.diaperswappers.com and www.diaperpin.com are two good sites for up to date info on cloth diapers and of course the diapering board here.

There are so many different systems. We do cloth for both enviornmental reasons and to avoid chemicals and synthetic materials. So, we do fitteds with wool covers and try to stick with organics. I would have loved to do prefolds but they simply don't work on my skinny thighed boy but that might change with the next baby so we'll give them another try.

I prefer to support WAHMs whenever I can so I usually shop from sellers on hynacart - www.hyenacart.com

We do have a bunch of organic cotton dream-eze fitteds from Mt Diaperstore that I got on sale for seconds - http://mtdiaperstore.com/

Some other affordable stores:

www.abbyslane.com
www.emibeans.com
www.diaperware.com

HTH a little!

For as much as I've used them (not much due to ECing), I've absolutely loved my Motherease One Size.

I bought from nurturedfamily.com in the past. I use pocket diapers because they are easy and I only cd part time.
Diaperware.com is local to me and Inge is in my local moms group, so this time I will order from her. :)

Not in your DDC (sadly, hopefully the October one) but I used Mother-Ease One-Size for both my kids and love, love, love them. I tried all kinds of cloth dipes and those are definitely my favourites.

Good luck!

I am glad I saw your post. I was just about to post the same thing. I have 3 and have used sposies with them. I really really want to cd #4. The start up cost for cding seems to be way out of my league though. I have been researching making my own and have decided to try the Very Baby AIO pattern. We'll see how it goes.

Oh gracious, there are so many more choices than prefolds and icky rubber pants! My personal favorite system is fitteds with Motherease Airflow covers, and the occasional Chinese prefold. I like wool too. :love

Have fun and try not to get too overwhelmed!

We use pockets on dd (mostly Bumgenius or Haute Pockets) but I'm planning on doing prefolds and fitteds with covers for the new baby for at least the first couple of months. They are much cheaper and since a new baby goes through more diapers/day I figured I could afford more of them.

My mom bought me some Kushies, and I made a bunch out of t-shirts that are one size pockets. I love cloth diapers!

Sunny Kat, you should visit the Elimination Communication forum here on MDC too. Very interesting! My dd2 was an EC grad at 21 months. We started her at three months, but I'm very seriously considering ECing this one from day one.

I've been making diapers for Miracle Diapers, so I'm planning to make my own too. Here's some that I made recently that I'm going to use for myself. Here's the link

The chloe's toes goes together quickly, but it's really hard to get the elastic tight enough. I've been NOT prewashing the elastic, then washing it to get it tight enough easily. The very baby pattern is really easy and has great directions. And it's sooooo cute!

My mother thinks cloth diapers are evil because they gave my brother a rash, but it was just the detergent she was using to clean them with. *sigh*

I am hoping to EC.
