DS (21mos) has been really cranky since several days before I found out I am pregnant. He also keeps saying "eat" all day long like he is starving. He still nurses a ton, but sometimes it is productive nursing (like no milk). And he is beginning to wake up at 7:30a and says "Eat" whereas he used to sleep in until 8:30 or so with me. This is really early for him especially to demand food that early since we nurse in bed in the morning off and on. Could my milk have already changed and it is now not as filling or there is not as much? I don't really feel like my supply has dropped.
I am just trying to figure out why is uncharacteristically cranky lately and says "Eat! Eat! Eeaaattt!" all day long.

Two days before my + preg test my toddler starting sticky his tongue out at me and refusing to nurse. So I think it's definitely possible for your milk to change immediately.
Yeah my supply dropped very early on. I got pregnant about 6/17 and was emailing my LLL leader a what the heck is wrong with me letter on 7/9. It was breaking my heart and I felt really bad for my DD, like I had let her down or something.

Same thing here, my supply dropped pretty quickly, before BFP, and is still pretty down. DD keeps trying to get more milk out, but its starting to hurt when she nurses :(

Yep. DD1 complained for several days before I got a + that there was no milk anymore. She was 3y so very verbal, but still a very avid nurser. In fact, her instance that my supply was all gone was why I took the pg test. :innocent I never got my milk back before DD2 was born either.

2 weeks after conception (and before I knew I was pregnant) my boobs totally deflated. I was wearing something that normally showed some nice cleavage and I remember being stumped as to what was going on... By 8 weeks the milk was totally gone. So it absolutely can happen rather quickly. Just think of the incredible hormones surging through your body right off the bat while it builds a baby.. It really seems to depend on the person/body.

I've been freaking out about this as well. My ds is 10 mo and I'm 8 weeks. He's been crying and hungry :( so I've started to increase his solids as much as possible and give him some fortified milk to drink out of a cup. We still nurse as much as he wants and I'm trying not to beat myself up about this. I realise that he will still nurse for the comfort/emotional benifits, even if I can't keep his tummy full.
Whatever you do, keep offering the breast. It's no longer 100% supply and demand. You'll supply what you can but if you miss feedings you won't make that anymore and none of the low milk supply things will work anymore.

I should add that my ds was almost 2... so we obviously were not feeding alot to being with at that point (as compared to a 9 month old).

Original poster here...well my sone is 21mos so he eats a lot of solid foods but he also nurses a ton still too. But it isn't all productive nursing, much of it is comfort or boredom nursing with not actual let downs. Which I don't like. I like when he is actually nursing to get some milk and then is done, for the most part.

It can definitely change early on. My supply started decreasing pretty much as soon as I conceived, and we had to give up nursing by the time I was 10 weeks because there just wasn't anything there.

I am 6.5 weeks pg and have a 21 month old as well. I noticed changes in his nursing before I knew I was pregnant, in fact it was one of the clues to me I should go pee on a stick.
With us it was marathon sessions, fussiness at the breast, going for his sippy cup after or during nursing. He starting cuddling his cup while nursing so it was handy when he wanted a big swoosh of liquid.
My supply tanked immediately when the hormones started effecting my body. Maybe your milk has changed taste. It seems to me that those hormones are pretty powerful and basically effect nearly everything in your body.
Congratulations on your new little bun!

12wks preg now but the first sign I was pregnant EACH time (I m/c at 5 wks) was my supply began to drop. Since I was EPing I could count the oz and I had been stable for months. By 7wks preg my supply was basically gone. :(

I'm not pregnant yet, but want to start trying this cycle. My milk supply already seems to be doing this. Will pregnancy make this worse? Maybe he's just been nursing more lately and I can't keep up. I just started drinking mama's milk tea. Hopefully that will help.

I wonder if this is what's happening to me! DH and I are trying, and my period is due any day now, and in the last few days, especially at night before bed, when I'm pretty empty anyhow, she has been biting me and scratching me while she nurses....... hmmm, maybe a test is in order....

Might just be that your milk tastes different. When I was about 4 weeks pregnant with DC no.2 my DD1 (24 months) kept on remarking that my milk was the most yummy thing in the world :D
Unfortunately it dried up completely in about 3 months and she quit nursing at 27 months of age :( (and there went my plans for tandem nursing...)
