View Full Version : Dumb Question Starr 02-11-2008, 11:39 AM Whats the difference between follicles and eggs? Are they the same thing? BurtsGirl 02-11-2008, 12:42 PM Yes and no. From my understanding the Follicles are the casing that holds the egg. Eggs are microscopic so we can't see them with an ultrasound but the follicles act as a bubble that hold the egg until it's ready to be released. RunnerDuck 02-11-2008, 12:46 PM Yes and no. Yeah... the egg develops inside the follicle... in a fluid... when you have ultrasound they can see how many follicles are developing and once the follicle reaches ~18mm (depends on treatment and Dr's views) it is assumed the egg is ripe and you will take your trigger shot. The egg itself is, I think, about the size of a period in something of normal sized text... I think you can see it with the naked eye but not on an ultrasound scanner! I have read that usually only about 20% of follicles will actually have a mature egg at trigger - not all follicles will yield an egg. Only way to get the count on that for sure, though, is if you are doing IVF. |
