Turkey? My husband's parents are both Turkish Cypriots. I visited Istanbul a year and a half ago and LOVED it! I'm now hooked on Turkish foods (minus meats as I'm a vegetarian). The streets of Istanbul reminded me of what Paris must've been like in the 1800s along the Left Bank. Everyone sits outside eating and drinking and chatting away. Beautiful place. :thumb

I'm a US transplant... moved to UK May 07, found out I was pregnant almost as soon as we arrived. We are planning on returning to the states this summer. But in the meantime, I know nothing about where I live and don't know anyone. I'm a brand-new SAHM still trying to figure out how to "do" the whole SAHM-thing.

Another US expat here. After 11 yrs in the US with my English husband, we moved here in Jan 07. It was hard work moving with two small children, but we're all settled in now and love it - making good friends and love the area. Although there's a definite lack of crunchiness around here that keeps me coming back to MDC!

Another US ex-pat!
I am thrilled to say that I am about to live in Southeast London again. My husband (he's English) and I have been in Brooklyn for the past 3 years, and while we've absolutely loved our time here, the baby on the way in October told us it was time to go home, which was always the plan anyway. It was bit edgy for the past few weeks as we waited for my Indefinite Leave to Remain to be reinstated, but it came through yesterday and we're flying home in 12 days!
We'll be staying with our wonderful ILs for a few weeks while we look for a place, but we're aiming for something in or near Brockley.

Hmmm, big place or little place?
My next guesses would be Leek, Rainow or Congleton... Or i guess Wilmslow, but you're getting up against Stockport then. And it depends too on if you're counting Buxton as a town or not. My brother used to work in Buxton - he's in Stockport now. My other 3 brothers are all in Macc still :)
It's not Cheadle or Cheadle Hulme is it? My family's recent history, such as it is, is in Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme!

Oh my goodness - really?! I'm an American as well, and I've lived in Blantyre with my family (dh - British, and 4 kiddos) since 2001!
What brings you to Blantyre (and where were you before that?)?
And here's the reason I've been digging around in the Finding our Tribe Area (I don't usually have time):
Here is a video that Democrats Abroad is trying to spread far and wide - it is very easy to register to vote from abroad, and more important than ever in this election year.
I vote in Virginia, which all the polls suggest is very close - I'll definitely be getting my ballot in! If you are American and living abroad, please make sure to request your ballot soon so that you can vote in this very important election:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amukRM9SSoo
Just a reminder for all of us ex-pats - get your ballot request forms in (the Democrats Abroad site makes it very easy to fill in the necessary form) pronto so you'll be able to vote in November!

They might be on MDC, but I bet at least one of them comes to LLL and SlingMeet in Oxford!
I'd be keen to meet some other MDC mums/moms in the area. If people are interested, I can try to organize something or other in Oxford in a few weeks. Or we've never been to Cambridge and are always talking about how we mean to go...

You're probably right! I went to a small sling meet in Abingdon about 18 months ago but I haven't been to any of the Oxford ones as we are sort of out of slings now and going round in different circles like school and home ed which makes the time of some things difficult.
We are in Oxford once a week with other home edders at SOAP on Whitehouse Road if you ever want to come and talk to anyone about home edding:)

I just posted an intro but I'll post here too :-)
We're Canadians who are currently living in Seattle, WA. We've been here just under 3 years.
We're relocating to London for my husband's job at the beginning of November.
his office is in Camden, we'd like to live as close as possible to the office but with 5 kids I'm thinking we may need to look a bit farther afield. Any tips on where is a good area to live with kids? We're very AP, unschoolers and would like a family friendly area, not too pricey ( I hear that this may well be impossible and so am prepared for it!*grin*) where we have access to shops and transport links in to DHs office and where we can hopefully get by without a car. Any North Londoners have an opinion on whether I'm totally nutty and have unreasonable expectations?
I'm open to any and all suggestions!
It feels good to see so many ex pats here! I'm super excited to get to the UK and start exploring and meeting people.
Warmly,
xo

You might be in luck - North can be much cheaper than South. Try looking in Hackney. Or just north of Camden. Don't go West of Camden, it will get way too expensive.

hi everyone!
DP and I are new to the UK. he has citizenship because his mom was born here, but she left when she was 15 so this is the first time he's lived here. we're canadians as well, from southern ontario, and right now we're living in frimley green. it's a little town near camberley in surrey, but at the end of this month we're moving, probably to woking, still in surrey. DP works in frimley and i'm currently job hunting so woking is driveable distance to his office and commutable to london on the train should i wind up working there.
DP owns his own business and works from home usually, but he's doing an office contract while we're in the UK this year. we're here for about a year and then it's back to canada for 12-18 months to tie up some things, then after we get married in october 2010 we're moving here for good. we don't have any littles yet, but when we do they'll be homeborn and homelearned as well.
it looks like there's a big north american expat community here, which makes me feel a little more relaxed about such a huge move.
nice to meet you all!

I used to live in abingdon (just south of oxford) until last year and may be one of the MT mamas people have seen around :)
I now live in the Isle of Man (half way between liverpool and belfast) and I think I am the only person on the island with a MT although I have seen a couple of mamas with ring slings. When me and my DH go out each wearing a DD in a MT we get all sort of strange looks, it is very funny!!! I also make a point of NIP whenever I can simply because no-one else seems to do it :)
