I've come across two other knitting mommies in this DDC without even trying. Any others? Who's on Ravelry? I'm howe2knit on ravelry- feel free to friend me. What are you all knitting? I'm selfishly knitting socks for myself. I need birthing socks. I can't think about knitting baby things yet.

Oooo, birthing socks...good idea!
I'm LaurenAnanas on Ravelry too, but I'm not "out" as pregnant there yet. Too many real life friends who don't know yet.
I have already started on some baby socks and they are killing me with the cuteness. I knit some cotton bibs last month, "for the gift stash," but I think they may get rolled over to my baby's stash.:)
I'm planning to do at least one simple cardigan, maybe some wooly pants, and some accessories, but I'm leaving the blankets for my crafty friends. My mom knits too, and I think she's already planning some Dale stranded-color masterpiece. She is such a sweetheart.
My main knitting plans for the summer are to do a bunch of holiday gifts, so that I have fewer things to worry about in December!

Same here. I work for an LYS and noone there knows yet, so I'm being cautious that coworkers/students/customers on Ravelry don't know until I've officially told the gang.

I went ahead and joined the pregnant Ravelry groups yesterday. Trying to stay positive.
I've made a baby sweater and a baby shrug but I was planning on giving them as gifts IF dh's cousin has at least one girl (twins). If they have boys, I'll keep them. Of course if we have a boy, I'll just give them to the next friend who comes up pregnant. Being military, we ALWAYS know someone pregnant.
I'm working on a pair of longies right now and have ordered some luxurious alpaca blend yarn for a bunting. I'm a yarn addict.

I'm knitting longies already :lol I'm so excited about having a fall baby that I couldn't resist buying fall yarn :D

I'm also not "out" about being pregnant yet, so I'm also not knitting anything for this baby yet either(call me superstitious--I didn't knit anything for DS until I was three or four months along either).
If anyone wants to find me on Ravelry though, I'm the same username there as I am here! The beauty of getting into something early, nobody's swiped your name yet!

yet another knitter on Ravlery!
I'm Twisted String there and happy to make more friends!
I'm not "out" yet either but I'm excited to be knitting for this little one.
I am 100% doing some happy labor socks for myself.

I'm fairly new to knitting. I've been doing it off and on for a couple years, but have only done scarves and a baby blanket (no patterns or changing of needles or type of knitting needed, :lol )
I'd love to knit longies for babe, but have no idea where to start. How complicated is it compared to doing scarves? What yarn is best? What size needle?
Thanks :thumb

Totally not a bad word! I'll fight anyone who says it is! That's what I teach at the shop I work for. I knit more at home, but professionally, I crochet more.

You could totally do it with a good pattern. I'd try a hat first. I'm a firm believer that hats are nearly perfect as a second project. Once you figure that out, you're set. Do you have a yarn shop in your area? They nearly all have classes and will help if you get stuck on a project with stuff bought there.

I wish I knew how to knit!
I don't have any grandma or anyone to teach me, though... and I don't think I could learn from a book.
Hmm... maybe there are instructional DVDs :D

I wish I could knit longies right now!
I am finished up other projects and need to start another for DD's bday! Then I want knit up some shorties for DS! He grew so fast that he barely wore any of the ones I made last summer!

There are some instructional DVD's out there. Leisure Arts has a pretty good one. There are also alot of online videos.
Are there any yarn shops in your area? Most of them have classes.

I'm horribly slow at knitting. But in theory I'm going to finish DH's hat in time for next winter :wink then do DD's cardigan for next winter, and then hopefully start on longies for the baby.
What yarn do you use? I was thinking peace fleece and then learning to dye it, I just dyed roving for felting (here (http://greenbeanboutique.blogspot.com/2008/03/wet-felting.html)) and that was FUN, so I want to dye my own yarn too.

:knit I'm a knitter! Although I'm not on Ravelry. :gloomy:
Booflies, I taught myself to knit from picture directions, so you might do fine. Give it a try!
I'm thinking about starting this baby hat pattern (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babynewhat2.htm) in some neutral color. Maybe ivory with a white ribbon. Will go out tomorrow to buy supplies to make the "announcement to the grandparents Easter basket" and am going to pick up some yarn for a hat as well. That's assuming tomorrow's pee-stick is still +, of course.

Another knitter here! I just joined Ravelry and I'm littlenest on there. There is so much to explore on Ravelry...I didn't even know you could have "friends"!
I haven't started knitting anything yet for this babe, though I'm itching to get started on some longies. I'm going to wait awhile yet though, because just in case something happens I don't want to have a tiny pair of longies as a reminder (I've miscarried in the past, so I'm a little paranoid :()

Hi Cara! (it's Emilie from thelittlenest blog :))
I've used Peace Fleece for some soakers for my ds, and in my opinion it might be a bit too scratchy for that super delicate newborn skin, though I know others have knit up newborn longies and soakers with it. Maybe someone who has used it for newborn stuff will chime in.
I'd love to start dying my own yarn also :love

Oooh, knitting is something I just have not been able to make work. I try it for a week, get frustrated, and then throw it back into the closet in my sewing room for a few months. LoL. Crocheting I can do, but I suuuuuck at reading patterns, so I can't crochet much. Yet. :P

Crochet patterns are tough. I teach crochet and one of the most popular classes is how to read a crochet pattern. The best way to learn to read them is to start off with really easy patterns and just jump in. It's like another language or shorthand or something.

I use peacefleece for shorts/pants and did for the last baby. My recent batch of yarn seems to be softer than what I had previously bought, and it does soften with washing.

I'm a knitter! I'm CocoBean on ravelry. I'm just 4 weeks preggo and already planning my nb wool stash! I did not cd dd from birth (started at 9 mos), but will start right away with this one. Plus, we'll be moving from our toasty, radiator heated condo (where we kept the windows open during the winter! in Chicago!) to our own single family home where we'll be paying separately for heat. So, I know this baby will not be lying around in a t shirt and diaper! I'm planning to knit sleep sacks, soakers, longies and kimonos. I have way too much yarn, so, unless I decide to go totally organic (and I shouldn't; I need to knit what I have instead of buying more!) I'm already set in that department.
How many of each would you knit for a nb stash?

Oh, I just started knitting again in January for friends' babies. I have two friends due in the next few months, one baby blanket done and another on the needles. And then I get to knit things for MY baby!!!
I learned to knit when ds/dd were 2, but quickly realized that wasn't going to happen with two 2-year olds (I recently found the wad of yarn they'd unravelled and tangled in a brief period of maternal inattention). Now I'm obsessed with knitting. I've got 3 projects going at once, including my first pair of socks (ergh - itty bitty needles and stitches, icky). Unfortunately, I'm also hyper-obsessed with natural wools and have already spent WAY too much money on yarn. But my two big projects are baby blankets and I want organic cotton wrapped around a newborn baby!
I'm teaching ds and dd to knit. Dd is finally getting excited about it, after several false starts. Ds is an absolute natural - perfect stitches his first try, but he's not terribly interested.

Anyone know any good patterns for diaper wraps? We don't like pull-up style, so something w/ Aplix closures?

Oh me me me!!!
I'm finishing up a crochet blanket I started for ds2 and then it's open season on baby stuff. I'm having a hard time deciding what though. I tend to not use anything I make. I don't find any of my stuff practical.
Hmmm...
Just registered for an invite at ravelry...never heard of it before

If you want to knit something, Little Turtle Knits has a buttoned cover pattern (among others): http://www.littleturtleknits.com/pages/diaperingpatterns.php
I haven't bought any patterns from them, so I can't vouch for anything, but they look like a good idea.

Warm Hearted Woolies has one . . . and I think it's free. I knit it for a friend last year and really liked it.

I love knitting! And crochet. Although I'm terribly slow and always choose the most complicated patterns. But it is so satisfying. I'm crocheting a blanket for my sister's baby and knitting a bamboo/wool blanket for our baby. Would love to hear more about patterns for diaper wraps.

Thanks, ladies!
Here's the link for the Warm Heart Woolies pattern:

Looks good (and free :D )
I like the Little Turtle's pattern, too, but not the $13 price. It looks like the main difference is ribbing in the crotch (which I would expect to make it more absorbent and stretchier). I'm thinking about modifying the WHW pattern to add ribbing. . .
