View Full Version : Appeal for boy name recommendations
~Megan~
03-26-2008, 11:34 PM
So I've got a feeling that this baby is a girl but everyone else seems to think its a boy.
We don't have a boy name. Dh has a hard time finding anything he likes. So our combined rules.
-not too common
-not too odd
-not Biblical
-sounds good with the last name dunn (cuts out nearly all -en, -on names)
Some names I like but he doesn't.
Lachlan
Jude
Lukas
Micah
Callum
Can you help us out?
(I'm not sure why this seems so important to know right now!)

I would consider Gavin and Miles too common for my preference.
Emmett is nice. I'll run it by dh but I can already guess...:eyesroll

What about Anden, Aven, or Owen? I know they all end in -en, but they sound good to me with Dunn...am I missing something about the -en endings?

How about Jesse?
It could be considered Biblical, but "Jesse Dunn" just sounds good, IMO.

I'm a big fan of Laura Wattenberg's Nymbler (http://www.nymbler.com). By putting in the five names you suggested as inspirations, nymbler generated the following for me:
Tomas
Reid
Riordan
Duncan
Malachy
Emmanuel
Finn
Keane
Lazarus
Broderick
Rowan
Graham
Tiernan
Matthias
Glyn
I'm guessing that Emmanuel and Lazarus are definitely out for you and that Finn and Glyn might be tricky. Maybe one of the others is interesting? That's also only the first page of results. Another idea is to plug in your children's names as inspirations and see what it generates for you.

Names that end with -en or -on tend to sound rhyming when said quickly or even just normally. Take my fil for example: Don Dunn. Nearly rhymes and sounds odd to my ear.

I've used nymber so many times! It picks up on odd things like because we spell ds' name with an 'e' and its commonly spelled with an 'a' they think we like really weird spellings. His name is also one of the few -on names that works well with our last name.
On the list you gave I do like Finn but dh has turned it down. We considered Rowan for a girl but its a bit to GN for me. That's another thing, I don't really like GN names.
The name I like best on that list is Keane. Though it does nearly have that rhyming thing with both names ending with the 'n' sound.
*sigh* I almost wish that naming wasn't a big deal for me and I could just name my kids the top most popular names and be done with it.

GN?
We're also having a lot of trouble coming up with a boy name (although we have a lot more time). We're mostly sold on a first name for a boy, but there are 3 possible spellings and we're torn on those. We're at a complete loss for middle names...there are a half-dozen that we *could* go with, but none of them are just right.

I am looking for a boys name with the much of the same criteria you have...
Nathan and Wyatt are the only boys names I (sort of) like right now. Sometimes I think the duration of pregancy is just to decide on a name, lol!

GN is gender neutral.

When I hear Dunn I think Irish....is your DH's family Irish? Anyway, I tend to think Irish which is also the name path I am going. I like Patrick and Sullivan. I really like your choice of Lachlan!
DH and I are alot like you and your DH. DH and I both are thinking girl and have our girl name set in stone. Most others think we are having a boy but DH won't agree to a boy's name. He is so convinced it is a girl at this point that he has stopped discussing boy names....he may be in for a shock in the delivery room!

Well if popular is out you might want to check trends in other places.
I too like Keane but it is and its various forms top ten in Ireland if my brain serves me correctly...
some of those names are biblical....Malachy is biblical..Matthias is too no
well lets start off with what feeling are you going for

I think with a one-syllable last name, 1 or 2-syllable first names just feel too short. I'd go with something with 3 or more syllables.

The boy name that I have picked out is Price (after Vincent Price) if you like it, you can have it.
I really like William (I'm biased though, it was my grandfathers name) but with the short forms and nicknames it wouldn't work.. Will Dunn (well done) Bill Dunn (buildin')
Cyle
Jullian
Loni
Adam
Neil (no not that one, sounds too much like kneel down)
Corey
Colin
Trevor
Parker
Jesse Dunn does sound pretty cool...
Names are so hard, especially when you have a name for 1 gender already picked out and love it, but for some reason feel the need to have a name for the opposite gender just in case.
You'll probably change your mind about names a few times throughout your pregnancy, and then once you see your baby, the name will just come to you. Also, from what I've heard, generally the dads really don't get much of a final say as far as names go, but it's fun to get them involved throughout the pregnancy, so who knows, you might have a little Lachlan.

That's funny I looked up trends in the UK. My mom must like Scottish things more than she knows as my brother, sister and I all have names in the top 20 for Scotland! I hadn't ever thought they went together before.
As for feel, I like a classic name with an old fashioned feel. Something masculine, not in the least bit gender neutral. But not something that you know other people, especially kids with the name.
Ds is Greyson and its perfect. Grey is an awesome middle name. Greyson is old sounding, distinguished too. Its also a bit English sounding and I tend to like names from the UK (more Ireland and Scotland than England though).
Does that help at all?

I put Keane on my list as its a clan name.

English place names can be also cool....
http://www.countrylovers.co.uk/places/placnams.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_forms_in_British_place_names
there are some cool ones in the last link...
but I think names should have a personal connection as well as sound good.

We go for Irish names as well, have you seen this site?
www.babynamesofireland.com
It has traditional Gaelic spellings as well as English versions of the names if you are more into the English-sounding (and spelled!) versions.
One that came to mind when seeing Greyson as your DS's name was Angus....very traditional, definitely a boy name, and it has that UK link.

I also was just thinking about how the sound of your last name is the same as Dunne which makes me think of the writer Dominick Dunne and his director/actor son Griffin- those both flow and sound great with the last name. I think you only need worry about the phonetics of an -en/-on/-in end if the name is one syllable like your FIL's name.

Other short names have the same problem. If they are only 2 short syllables then the rhyming still happens.

I love Noah but its really common here. When dd was in Kindergarten there were two in her afternoon class and two in that one teachers morning class. I don't know about the other K classes but this was in a school of only 400. That seems like a lot to me. It is a nice name though!

Other names we came up with for #2 before we found out that she was a girlie were:

Oliver (this was our #1 pick for a second boy)
Sebastian
George (I just love George so much for a little boy :love)
