I was on it once way back in my early 20's. It was an awful experience. I was not monitored. I was told to go off when I felt ready--no tapering was suggested. I relapsed and became worse.

That being said, I still feel that, like any mainstream medicine, it is not a one size fits all deal. For some people, Prozac may be beneficial. It wasn't for me. Nor was Paxil.

I take 5-htp along with a good diet, exercise, and meditation. Even with those, I do still take a low dose of Effexor, but I am hoping to one day control my symptoms naturally.

Good luck to you!

Hi, I started Prozac during the second trimester last summer and it was a godsend to me. I'd tried a couple of other anti-deps in the past that were not a good match for me. Prozac has been sooo helpful in reducing my panic/anxiety attacks, the constant self-criticism, feelings of not being good enough, and thoughts that kept me awake at night. I will say that I've had some slight side effects that haven't subsided (e.g., dizziness) with my increase from 20mg to 30mg and my psychiatrist is looking to lower my dosage of Prozac and stack a bit of Wellbutrin.

For me Prozac made a huge difference in reducing irritability, and increasing patience. It has made me more like my old self before children. The other day I was actually snapping my fingers to music and dancing around. Wow.

Good luck to you. Have you tried anti-depressants in the past? Everyone responds differently to the meds out there. I hope this one works for you. If not you have a right to keep searching until you find something that works.

Due to my extreme sensitivity to meds in the past, my psychiatrist started me on a quarter dose for a week, then half, then three quarters, then full dose. Increases have been by a half dose and I've tolerated them quite well. Starting at such a low dose I still had some strong side effects but nothing that disabled me from meeting my work and home responsibilities. This was very important to me.

Let us know how things are going for you. Good luck. :Hug

ETA - like the OP I notice that proper diet, exercise, sleep and supplements are important in feeling balanced and healthy, and I try to keep on top of good habits in those departments.
