View Full Version : Shocking complication
Ensemble 05-01-2008, 08:54 PM I simply do not know what will provoke the outcry and backlash that convinces/shames the American medical establishment to stop engaging in the "service" of medically pointless genital surgeries on newborns.
I doubt it will be this (http://psotblog.typepad.com/psotblog/2008/05/confidential-pe.html) [warning:graphic].

:( God. How is male circumcision NOT considered genital mutilation by the world?
theretohere 05-01-2008, 09:28 PM I can't look- what is it?

A skinned foreskin. What I dont understand, is circumcision is not even viewed in the same way other surgeries are. If they were, even people who supported circumcision would speak out about horrors like this, and what we all can do to correct these complications from happening. But they dont. It just makes everything so much more horrible.
MCatLvrMom2A&X 05-01-2008, 10:02 PM A degloving injury due to the mogen clamp. It is writen by a Dr. asking other Dr's if they have ever ran across that kind of thing before. They also mention Gamco and bell (plasti I assume) that can cause this.
I write because ....unknowingly had a cuff of the foreskin folded back under itself over the bell. The result was a "ring of the treebark" with the under lying mucosal surface not cut through.
Yeah the foreskin is now a ring of treebark :censored:
Oh and this little gem toward the end
In any event, it’s no “biggie”, easy to correct, no significant or permanent sequelae.
If I typed out what is going on in my head right now I would be banned for life :hopmad:
Nathan1097 05-01-2008, 10:02 PM I don't understand. It looks like they took the outer foreskin but LEFT the INNER!
MCatLvrMom2A&X 05-01-2008, 10:07 PM Yep Nathan just the skin got removed not the "meat" for lack of a better term :(
Nathan1097 05-01-2008, 10:18 PM Yep Nathan just the skin got removed not the "meat" for lack of a better term :(
I understand that's what they're talking about, but I actually see skin covering the glans. It looks like the outer layer of foreskin is gone but the inner is still there, along with tight-ish shaft skin.
MCatLvrMom2A&X 05-01-2008, 10:35 PM Yes the foreskin is still there just without the skin on it.
Night_Nurse 05-01-2008, 11:27 PM It's horribly sad.

i don't get what the point of that is, doesn't that defeat the purpose of circing to begin with? (not that their really is one but...) i'm guessing that was by accident? i'm pretty good with medicalese (work in an animal hospital) but i can't figure that out.

What is wrong with people?????? It's really hard to be understanding and "meet people where they're at" ...when seeing this as some kind of reasonable risk for something that wasn't medically necessary is "where they're at."
MCatLvrMom2A&X 05-02-2008, 12:11 AM Yes it was a mistake. The Dr. didnt put the clamp on right resulting in the degloving. I am trying so hard to not think of the pain that little boy was in and praying that he was one of the lucky few who get a nerve block for pain. :bawl:

yeah that would do it. degloving is nasty, i see it at work in animals after getting hit by cars. *sigh*
Claire and Boys 05-02-2008, 02:27 AM I Can't even look at the pic and I feel sick reading the responses :( poor baby.
LavenderMae 05-02-2008, 06:26 AM That poor little baby. :( I wonder how those monsters explained that away to the parents.
mntnmom 05-02-2008, 08:19 AM What makes me so mad is the casualness of the dialogue. It's just "one of those things, anybody dealt with it before". No concern at all that this poor boy has had his most delicate parts mutilated unessasarily. No concern for the longterm complications. Just another day at the office.
cherri0196 05-02-2008, 08:33 AM Yes the foreskin is still there just without the skin on it.
OMG!! That is sick!! (I couldn't look either)
:( Poor Baby
Doodlebugsmom 05-02-2008, 08:49 AM That is nauseating. That poor, poor little guy. I'm going to hug my little (intact) guy extra hard when I pick him up from pre-school. Thank God I was well informed about circ when I had him. Although, I like to think that something in me would've made me think twice about cutting my baby before I became educated.
Quirky 05-02-2008, 11:05 AM I don't want to look, but for those of you who can -- is this a place where you can post or leave comments such as "What the hell is WRONG with you people??"

Several people have left comments there.
To be clear, the picture there is from a case different from the one the original doc wrote in about.
Dave2GA 05-02-2008, 03:36 PM Patial degloving and degloving injuries are very common. I have dealt with several such cases. It should not happen if the circ is properly performed, but I am convinced it happens every day.

I think I see what happened but it's going to be hard to explain. Yes, it was accidental and appears to be caused by carelessness.
First, you have to know that the Gomco Clamp works by sheer force basically welding the two skin surfaces together and sealing the blood vessels eliminating the need for sutures. Think of a pair of pliers with two skin surfaces between the jaws and such pressure being applied that the two skin layers are permanently welded together.
In this case, it appears that when the bell was placed over the glans, part of the foreskin was captured under the bell, part of it was stretched down the shaft and part of it was pulled up through the frame and was eventually cut away. This left two layers of epidermis (outer skin) captured under the mucosal layer. (inner skin) This is what is causing the bulging appearance.
This was a problem that had to be addressed immediately since all of the blood supply in the captured epidermis was terminated and the skin would necrotize. This would be likely to cause a systemic infection that could endanger the boy's life.
I suspect they split the crush site apart and removed the isolated two layers of epidermis and probably sutured the incision back together.

I know the casual no-big-deal feel is sickening.:(
You know, I have so often felt like people do not view newborn babies as real human beings, but as objects. I doubt if a a much older boy or a grown man had something like this done to him that it would be talked about so casually.
It all makes me sick to my stomach.

Ask the baby if it's "no biggie". Oh, wait, the baby has no voice yet...
I have a question...
If I went to go have my son circed and he came back like that, I would not want them to go anywhere near him, much less have him recirced (hopefully correctly, this time!). Is this even fixable without circing at this point? I hope if his parents have any more sons, they remeber this and leave him intact.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I dont know if you heard of the story from Canada where a boy died from his circumcision itself (loss of blood). It got a fair amount of media attention, and they did an interview and they said if they had another boy, they would circumcise again.
I just want to slam my head into a desk, I dont get it. They already have a daughter, perfectly healthy. If their second child had been a daughter, she would still be alive today. Being born a boy in the western world, certainly has its dangers. Especially with parents as careless as this.
