View Full Version : If your baby was posterior...

...what did it feel like?

I was told by a CNP yesterday that my baby is posterior, and I really just don't think she is. I keep reading about signs of a baby being posterior, and I don't have any of those. I know she is head-down and generally faces my left side, but I've felt her rotate her back to the front and other side, too. I feel no kicking whatsoever in the front, just some fluttering down by my cervix, which I assume are hands, and every once in awhile she will push a foot out, creating a bulge on my left side, right about where my kidney should be.

I know it's probably impossible to tell how a baby is lying without actually being there, but I'm just looking for your experiences and opinions so I can get a better idea of what the posterior position is really like.

Thanks!

I've only ever had posterior breech facing babies, and I've only ever felt the heaviest kicks down and to the front. But since I've never had anything else I can't really compare what I feel against proper alignment.

I can't be of much help with my previous experiences, but http://spinningbabies.com/ has some good info on baby positioning that you might be able to use.

It felt like I was pregnant with nothing but arms and legs. I think he switched back and forth from time to time before labor but decided to go through labor posterior. Your back will tell you at that time. Back labor is pretty intense. There are positions you can get in to encourage your baby to rotate, if that happens. I didn't get a chance to try any of it but for sure will if it happens again.

I didn't feel much movement at all. So my mainstream MWs sent me in for two N/S tests at week 34 and week 37. I also had lots of random low back pain. Baby was still slightly posterior when I went into labor, then I stalled out after only three hours; I went to a chiro in the AM to get the Webster adjustment and it helped get things moving again and to help him turn a bit more. It helped a bunch, although he still didn't come out the right way, he was crooked.

Mine have all been OP as well. I don't think I got kicked any differently than my friends.

baby may not be exactly occiput posterior (completely sunny side up). your care provider might have used the term posterior more generically and baby might be more like occiput transverse, which could be very possible if you're feeling all your kicks on one side.

have you seen a chiropractor, or tried an inversion or other suggestions on turning babies from the spinningbabies.com website? after having two occiput transverse babies that gave me back labor and whom we spent a lot of time getting to turn during labor, i was bound and determined to keep it from happening again. so i started seeing a chiro at 34 weeks. at 37 weeks my baby was completely OP, but at 38 weeks, right after a chiro adjustment, i did an inversion, and the baby turn perfectly OA and stayed that way until she was born at 41w5d :thumb from what i've read, adjustments and inversions won't encourage a baby in a good position to turn into a bad one, so i would say there's no harm in doing it even if you're not sure it's necessary (there's more info on that at the spinningbabies.com website too).

My last son was posterior all the way out. And I could tell.

For me, I could tell he was posterior because every once in a very long while he would rotate (but never stay) and I could feel his hard back down my front. But most of the time I could not feel his back on either side or in front (meaning it had to be along my spine).

So this is what I look for when I am finding position. The baby's hard back.

the back labour was awful. they turned him with forceps. i don't know if it had anything to do with it, but he kicked me in the ribs a lot. i felt like the one side was bruised for some time after having him.
