View Full Version : THE "Most random, 'huh?', strange craving you've ever had" THREAD

What is the strangest, most random craving you've ever had and maybe a funny/interesting scenario that the craving occurred?
My husband and I were driving along (I was about 3 months along) and I suddenly, without warning or any kind of buildup to it said outloud, "BANANA CHIPS!"
:scratch (husband)
"Seriously, we must get banana chips. Pull into that Fred Meyer and let me go get some!"
So we did...and they were good.
What about you?

Stove top stuffing. I haven't had the stuff since I was a kid but I had to have it. My husband and daughter watched me eat it in digust. :lol

It was the most satisfying meal I have ever eaten.

Tom's of Maine Fennel toothpaste.
Couldn't get enough my last pg and I'm the same again this pg. If could I'd be brushing my teeth with it 12 times a day. DH laughs every night when I brush my teeth for 10 minutes saying "mmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMmmmmm."

But OMG are they good. Numm.

Jalapenos on my pizza.
Pepperoncini peppers. On a sandwich.

I've been craving those giant-sized Smarties that come in the giant Smartie roll. DH thinks it's misplaced pica and I just want the chalkie texture, but I think it's the straight up citric acid, because i'm also quite into limes right now.

Oh yes, in addition to my toothpaste thing, I am ALL about smells. Particularly essential oils like tea tree and lavendar. Oooh wow. I have a diffuser in our laundry room with TTO in it and I love just walking into the room and inhaling. No, "love" isn't strong enough, I CRAVE smelling it.

I think it's weird that all these foods that I normally won't eat, I love when I'm pg. Anything spicy, I'm all about. Poppers, salsa, spicy V-8, oh yeah! Plus things like cole slaw and raw onions--usually, I think those are nasty, but now, I'm loving.

Weirdest craving so far: a cheese milkshake. I didn't give in, because where would I get one?

Poutine - French-Canadian dish consisting of french fries, beef gravy, and cheese.
Seriously, it was the only thing that settled my stomach for the first three months...Thank goodness the restaurant down the street from work makes excellent poutine.
ETA: And homemade bread and butter pickles that my co-worker canned last season. I begged her for her other three quart jars and inhaled the pickles within a week.

Sandwiches. Of all kinds. Subway, ham sandwiches (with pickles and tomatoes), tuna sandwiches, pb&j, ect. And my fridge has filled up with every kind of pickle. Bread and butter. Dill. Sweet. Relish. :lol Of course I've always been a pickle junkie but lately I *have* to have them.
And as far as smells I'm totally going nuts over here! I run a daycare and have a little 17 week old in my care. I keep wanting to sniff his head remembering how wonderful my son's head smelled as a baby. And the little one's head smells like *nothing* to me. So so weird. Especially with my increased sensitivity.

Lucysmama - I am totally a smell weirdo. I don't have the same pool craving you do, but I can fully imagine it. What IS that? I enjoy some smells so much I don't want the enjoyment of them to diminish after pg! Like tea tree oil, I've never really liked it and sometimes thought it was a bad smell, but right now I just can not get enough of it.
Last pg all I wanted to eat was baloney sandwiches. (I never eat baloney in real life!) So at least this smell thing seems a little healthier!

I totally hear the poutine craving, not something I would normally eat but I love it right now!!!
As for other cravings, I have been in love with grilled cheese, watermelon (we have eaten 5 so far this season), pickled fiddlehead ferns, banquet breast meat chicken nuggets (not something we eat regularly) for lunch, Unsweetened iced tea (normally I'm a diet coke girl)
I think that is about it.
Oh and I love the smell of this one shopping plaza near me. There is a longhorns steakhouse there and the smell of steak and french fries coming out of that place is just heaven. And I don't eat steak.

Ditto for the fiddleheads!!! You were with me when I bought my 3rd pound of fiddleheads at the farmer's market - and I am desperately craving more of them, esp. now that the season's almost over. I normally love eating season to season, but this sucks!!

Warheads. You know, the super sour hard candy? I haven't had them since I was about 11 but all of a sudden I needed them. I picked up a couple at a candy store and they were so puckery and delicious. A few days later I found a whole bag at a drug store. I ate it in two days. By the end I could barely even taste the sour any more, I had become so desensitised to it.

Weirdest craving so far: a cheese milkshake. I didn't give in, because where would I get one?
When I was little, we didn't have a Steak and Shake in our town, so whenever we were on a road trip and passed one, I imagined that they had big blenders into which they put steak, mashed potatoes, and butter to make a shake. So perhaps they could make your cheeseshake, too. :D
I'm big into smells, especially this awesome company called Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com) that makes amazing and unique vegan perfume oil blends. They had this cool sale a few years ago called Chaos Theory where you paid your $20 and they sent you a random, numbered vial of something they had formulated but not marketed. Mine arrived, and it smelled like hot lemons and sugar, and I was so disappointed. But now that i'm pregnant, all I want to smell is hot lemons and sugar, and i'm practically bathing in the stuff. Ah, serendipity.

I wanted a gravy sundae... Mmm Vanilla icecream dripping in gravy :eat:
I didn't indulge because I was full but when asked at our favorite restaurant if there was anything I wanted this popped out of my mouth and sounded SOOOOOOO good. And I don't even really like their gravy. Our waitress would have gotten it for me in a heart beat too but I really was full.
Mmm poutine... We used to get the stuff at Costco or KFC but we just moved and the closest place to here is A&W for poutine... It's not bad but it's chicken gravy not beef... But it has the cheese curd... whereas anywhere else in this town it's just cheese and gravy :irked:

ok i am decidedly NOT pregnant, but when i WAS pregnant, i CRAVED the smell of chlorinated water, like from the pool, or the local fountains for the kids to play in. OMG the thought of that smell would make me salivate.
also. Charlies laundry powder, the smell of it straight from the bucket, into water, it would make me salivate so badly. i did NOT want to eat it. but i did want to stand there and huff huff huff all i could.
i am a big sniffer anyways, but when pregnant i CRAVE certain smells.

I don't think I'd classify this as a weird craving, but I'm constantly craving club soda and mineral water. At first I put tons of lemons and limes in it, but now I just drink it straight.
Talking about smells, mostly I just can't stand the smells of a lot of things. But DH's Uncle was totally making fun of my BIL (the oldest in DH's family) at a family party telling him how my MIL liked to sniff gasoline when she was pg with him. :raz
DH's Uncle said that my MIL would make my FIL go get the gas cap off the car and wrap it in cloth for her to inhale happily. We all ribbed my BIL about it, but DH's Uncle likes to spin yarns so we thought he was just making things up to be funny.
Well when DH and I were over at his parent's this weekend, both FIL and MIL confirmed that it was true!! :scratch MIL said she just couldn't get enough of the scent.
DH who is the baby in his family looked kinda worried and said, "Uh Mom, did you have any sniff cravings while you were pregnant with me?" :lol

haha- this thread is hilarious! and stiring up my appetite =) if only i could find pepper jack cheese in NZ...
unfortunately, we live 1 hour out of town, so often when i have a spontaneous craving, it is unattainable for the immediate moment- though it usually sticks if it's a strong enough one!
i'm about 10 weeks along & often super queasy, but for the past week i've been eating peanut butter & jam sandwiches with corn chips (between the bread, that is). not TOO weird cause i ate similar variants as a kid, but my dp thinks it's pretty weird.
i'll have a couple days of only eating crackers & bread & boring things, then suddenly i wasnt spicey pad thai! makes NO sense to me...

I'm not pregnant, but so want to be. And loving this thread!
With my dd I once had to go directly to the store, buy grapefruit juice and drink it. Just once. And I don't think I have bought it any other time in my life.
Ketchup. I was too ashamed to just eat it so I had to hunt around the kitchen for something I could reasonably put ketchup on.
Beer. Gave in and had a fake one.
Vegemite!! This was problematic because you USED to be able to get it in Canada, but you can't now. So I was asking everyone to keep a look out and everyone kept saying "oh Safeway/IGA/Save On has it all the time", but they didn't! Worse the people that suggested Marmite, gross! Thank god for the Aussie owned Cobb's bread and their cheeseymite roll (like a cinnamon bun but with cheese and vegemite instead). So good!
I am ttc now. I have a BIG jar of Vegemite already in the fridge.

I really should just learn how to make the stuff...The dish I mostly crave is Chicken Makhani.
Oh gosh, today is our weekly Indian food trip...We leave in 30 minutes. Yum.

My last pregnancy I craved McDonalds Fish Sandwiches. OMG GROSS! I only gave in a few times.
:eat: Me too! So weird, since I don't normally even like seafood. I force myself to eat some for the health benefits on occasion, but the McDonald's fish sandwich certainly doesn't fall into that category.
The strangest craving I had last time was lobster! Very weird because I'd only had lobster once before in my life as a kid and couldn't stand it. Even wierder because I had the craving the entire time, from the first trimester on. It was so strong I was driven to distraction, but never gave in due to mercury concerns (and because I know it's not something I actually like!) It went away as soon as she was born, much to my relief!
