Hello,
Anyone ever used a completely original name? What were the responses you got?
Thanks!

I actually had a made-up name picked out if this were a girl. I'd been telling everyone our name choices from the start and everyone loved it since it had such special meaning:
My dad's sister's names are Anita and Edith. We've always been a close family and proud of our history. When my sister and I were littler, we had trouble saying "Aunt Anita and Aunt Edith" so we called them both Aunt Anedith. I thought it was a great way to honor them both equally, so if this were a girl her middle name would have been Anedith and we could have even called her Anne for short if it were her first name.
Personally, I've never taken into account other people's opinions on a name because no matter what you pick, it will be made fun of when they are young. 'Tis the way of life, you know. :wink I pick something that has meaning and connection for the child, that they can be proud of and enjoy when they're teenagers (and beyond) and want to be unique. There are four girls in my family: Johanne (pronounced Yo-han-ah), Deborah, Karen and Adela (Ah-day-la). Even though they're all traditional names somewhere, two of us had some very German ones to contend with. We all hated our names when we were little, but Adela and I are in love with ours now that we're older and can appreciate them. Debi and Karen now just feel a little like the middle children that got cheated out of "the specialness". :p

My friend's daughter is named Neveah (as she says, 'heaven spelled backwards'), usually Nev or Nevvy for short. She says people love it, compliment it all the time. It is pretty, and I think the nicknames are adorable.
There are soooo many kids out there with composite or original names, I don't think anyone bats an eye anymore. People would probably think it was weirder if you named your baby Millicent or Arnold. Anyway pretty much any combination of sounds is a 'classic' name somewhere.
I myself am a fan of 'traditional' American names.. all the names I like are Greek, Latin or European.

I'm not a fan of names that are made up just because someone thought that combination of sounds was cool, but that's mostly because I think names should have some connection or meaning to the child. Since your choice does I don't see why you shouldn't use it. If you are prounouncing it something like "Ann Edith" you might want to put the extra n in there, it will make it easier for people reading it and trying to prounounce it.
Oh just realized that the second poster was Anedith and not the original...sorry..
I guess what I said is still my opinion though..if the name just 'sounds good' I'd think about it carefully, your child might want a reason for their name other than its melodiousness, but if the name or the individual parts do have meaning for you than I think a made up name is just as real as any other name...in the end, they were all made up by someone!

We made up my daughter's name out of nowhere and this time around, the front runner for the new babe we made up as well, based off of a name we had liked but wasn't quite right. As it turns out, my daughter's name is Polish and this new one we thought of is an old African name. There are SO many names out there, it's hard to even "make up" anything! If it's a nice sounding name, my guess is it's out there somewhere and it has some meaning for some culture. At least that's what my experiences have been! :)
