Hi everyone and Congrats!
I've been a little hesitant to come to this site since I had a missed MC in December. Last time, I went to the Dr. early on, had a pap done, had the HCG levels checked, had an vaginal U/S at 7 weeks. I know that it isn't terribly rational, but part of me feels that it all contributed to the mc.

In any case, I am kind of reluctant to go to the doctor until this little one is a little more firmly in there, ya know? I was supposed to go this week, but the nurse called to reschedule for next week. I was relieved. Part of me thinks I should go to make sure everything is ok. I am 35 and this is my 3rd, so maybe I should make sure the HCG levels are ok, etc, etc. The other part doesn't want all the poking and prodding. I'm going off the assumption that all is well in there and developing as it should! I'm much less stressed that way. Anyone else waiting to see the doc?

Are you going to get an early U/S done?

Nice to meet you all!

Libby:)

I'm waiting to see anyone but its because I can't decide who I want to see! Last time around I saw a mw until we discovered I was having twins at 31wks. While I was trying to find an ob the twins were born with the on-call doc who picked me up in the ER. So I guess she is my OB now. :dizzy: Anyways, I think I'm going to go with the mw again so I've contacted her but I don't see any reason to rush in. I do want an early ultrasound to check if its twins again (which would mean switching back to the ob!) so I'll probably try to set something up for nextg week (I'll be 7wks. then) and see if they'll grant me a u/s around 8wks. Unless you're concerned about something I would say sit tight and let that little embryo burrow away and grow!!! Congrats!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with waiting to go to the doctor! My midwife doesn't see folks until 12 weeks, so with my first, that was the first time I saw anyone at all. The only reason I go earlier since then is because I need to establish myself as a patient with my OB in case I need a hospital (because I did with the first - came at 29 weeks), and I also want the dating u/s in case I have another preemie, so we're all on the same page as far as dates go (my kids measure a couple weeks ahead later in pregnancy, and the OBs assigned to me didn't believe my son was 29 weeks and thus they let him come that early instead of waiting until closer to 32 weeks as they should have done).

I don't see any reason why you need to get your hcg checked. Will it change the outcome of your pregnancy? Can they do anything if your hcg isn't doubling? If you're more comfortable waiting, I say wait.

I'm waiting too. I can't figure out what would be the point in going--I know what vitamins and supplements to take, I know the date of conception and beyond that I can't figure out what they could possible do for me. But, I avoid ultrasounds, so I end up getting very little care throughout the pregnancy.

Hi! I'm waiting too. Okay, I'm only 5 weeks as of tomorrow, but I'm still trying to figure out what/who I want to see. I liked our previous mw, and so she's an option, but I now have a friend who is a mw and I'm thinking about asking her. Would that be weird? So, knowing I have 7 weeks to make a decision I'm not thinking about it too much. Good luck to all of you!

I'm starting my mw search (we're in a new state so my old mw isn't an option), but I won't be under care for several weeks yet. Early pregnancy is pretty straight-forward -- just get through the day and eat as well as possible. I'm already on a really clean diet b/c my dd has a nasty thrush infection so I'm just hoping I can keep it up.

I'm right at 5 weeks with my fourth child. I have no history of pregnancy complications, I know roughly when we conceived, I'm feeling pretty good right now, and I'm fairly experienced in what to expect during pregnancy. I plan to wait to see the doctor until there's a chance of being able to hear a heartbeat, probably around 10-12 weeks or so.

I'm going to see my midwife briefly tomorrow to check my hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. I had a miscarriage and subsequent hemmorhage in April and was severely anemic upon discharge from the hospital. We're not doing an ultrasound or any other stuff besides that. I won't be seeing her for a real prenatal until I'm 12 weeks.

I went ahead and made my 1st appt, but i'll be around 11 weeks then. I dont' see any problem with waiting. If you're not having any problems and are taking good care of yourself, you should be fine!

It's not weird to have a friend be your midwife. The CPM-in-training who caught my 2nd baby is a friend of mine, and I've asked her to do it again for baby #3 (she'll be a CPM by then). I asked both her and the main midwife I used for my last 2 pregnancies to attend me together. I love them both! :love

I'm in no hurry to go to the doctor myself. What will she do for me? Just start the scary testing... ugh, I hate that part.

You always have the option of saying no to any testing you don't agree with :Hug

Yep, just say no to any tests you don't want. I skip the AFP and the GTT.

My mw scheduled me for my first appt when I will be about 9 weeks. A little early I thought, but I did have a 20 week loss a few months ago.

I researched doctors, finally decided upon one, tried to schedule, found out she's not taking new patients til August, pondered that, finally decided to still go with her, and now find out I'm not covered at all by insurance for maternity.

:(

So yes I'm waiting to see a doctor until I can get this figured out!!

(btw, I would totally LOVE a midwife, we're just in a land without, it seems. . .)

I'm not in any hurry. My midwife scheduled me for a little over 8 weeks and that sounds peachy. If I'm offered an early u/s I plan to decline it as I know my dates quite firmly.

I'm waiting until I'm probably 13 weeks along, my midwife said it was no biggie :) We're out of town until then with DH's work and I don't really have a need to go to anyone up here and we're pretty solid with dates so no rush. It's crazy, with DS I was so impatient because they wanted me to wait until I was 8 weeks just to have the initial interview and 12 weeks for my first appointment and I thought the world was ending :D

Have you talked to crunchy people who are "in the know" about such things in your area? You might have midwives that are underground. ;)

Sorry about the doctor and insurance issue. :(

I am working on talking to the crunchy in the know people, and it really does seem like the only midwives are 2 hours away. I live in a flatland Texas town that is 6 hours away from every other major city. :( Thanks for thinking of me.

I got in touch with the midwife I am wanting to use today. We had a great getting to know you talk on the phone and she said she would like to set something up for next week--at my house. I had assumed that I wouldn't see anyone until closer to 12 weeks--I am 7 right now--but now I am kinda excited about meeting her next week!

Many midwives will travel 2 hours away--I know mine does.

If it's your first baby or if you have had normal length labors, I think 2 hours away would be ok. Just be sure to call your midwife as soon as you go into labor, especially if you have a family history of fast labors (as I do - my family doesn't usually go more than 5 hours).

My midwife is about an hour away.
