I was wondering where you went to. Congrats on pregnancy. Are you going to do an unassisted delivery? How exciting. :love

I always wish I had some Mommas to talk to when my 7 (almost 8 year old) is swimming in the public pool and I am stuck on the sidelines (trying to give him swimming confidence by not being IN the pool).

We are in tucson & would love to meet new families...
im just not as great at keeping "dates" with two kids... I pretty much follow their lead, which means there are days at a time we stay in or around the house.
but i have a soon to be 3 year old and a 5 week old... where around town do you live or would like to meet?

I'm game as well although we'll be moving soon and prob out of state although we're still not sure when or where.
inchijen, you're me last year! Dd was born in July and my ds had just turned 3 in May. I think it's a great age spacing.

Me and my friend have been thinking about trying to get a "toddler" play group started, and I was just coming here to write the very same post!
My DD is 13mo and her's a few months older, we have been going to the birth centers mom and baby group, but our "babies" are kinda getting too big :(
We have toyed with the idea of starting a group at one of the bookmans mtg room or something like that...?
Just yesterday though we noticed a flyer by the library for the "Stay and Play" group I think it is something like 8mo-36mo. So we are planning on checking that out. They have them at a few libraries around town I guess. Thats all I know so far. We are planning on taking turns on going to the one nearest because she's NW and I'm SE. The first one we're going to try is next tues at 9am-10:30 (I believe), at the Golf Links Library.
I'm hopeing my older kids (13DD, and 10DS) can hang-out at the library, not too sure how that will go.
We're open for anything!

Hi! Where? When? I don't drive so I'll have to figure out the Sun Tran plan. I read that your ss is 10, is that right? My dd is 10. And I have 3 ss's. They won't be with us, as they aren't living with us these days, but, it will be cool to talk to someone else with the blended family experience. I'll keep posted. We will be moving back to Tucson from Avra Valley in about a week or so. Looking forward to playing!

i've got one two year old... we dont do schedules much, but we do tend to go to the zoo, the botanic gardens, mrs tiggey's, and our new love-- the splash park up at dodge and river... brandi fenton park. early in the day and late in the day, otherwise, as ds proclaims: "hot out! cool down." :lol

You're at Goodfellow right now? That's where dh and I met (we're one of those infamous tech school marriages :wink ). I was there for 7 mos for my tech school but that was almost 5 yrs ago now. I actually miss that little town. There was a chinese restaurant there that had the best buffet ever :eat:

I would also love to join a playgroup. I have a 2 year old dd and am expecting a little ds mid July. Dd comes to work with me so she gets a lot of adult attention but I think she really needs more interaction with children around her own age. Either early in the morning or later in the evening would work best for us, other than that we have unscheduled days off.

Well, it looks like there is a few of us that would like to get together. Now we just have to figure out a time and place. Saturdays are good for me, and may provide more opportunity for mammas to make it. Any suggestions? Sorry it took so long to post again. I've been waiting for my new babe (due on June 9th...still not here).

ok.
this saturday from 9 am til around 11 am
himmel park, purple playground at the north east corner, near the library-- i'll try and get the table under the tree and hang orange streamers or something.
i'll be the blonde with messy hair in a sun dress on a striped picnic blanket blowing bubbles. ds will be the wild 2 year old toe head wearing tie-dye and carrying his rainbow umbrella. dh will be the tall guy drinking an iced mocha.
bring kids, dogs, hubbies/partners/etc, coffee or drink of choice, and snacks as needed......
see you there?

I think this Saturday I could do an earlier am, but if other moms want to do the noon time, I'll just wait til next time. Napping is the bane of our existence. He starts heading toward a nappish attitude around 11, but sometimes doesn't sleep til 3! So I try not to push it after that time. Gelato for brunch, even, is fine with me, but it may be a touch odd for others... We do love the Edith Ball though.

Ladies - I posted this as a separate thread, to make it prominent:
http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?p=11808334#post11808334
it also looks like a good opportunity for us to meet together there, perhaps?
If there is interest, perhaps we should PM each other our cells so we can find one another - don't know how crowed it will be.

That sounds great - I think I'll hit the BF fair first, and then head over there later, if you're all staying for a bit - or go there first, depending on when you meet. I probably won't make it anywhere before 830 am, even though we get up by 630 usually (not by choice, mind you). It just takes forever to get enywhere from here and to get everyone clean/pottied/fed/clothed.

I would love sabino too. dh said he is would be up for the racquet club and water park or anything really.... which is shocking since he usually searches for excuses to miss these sorts of things :wink.
I looked at the racquet club site and it only had lists for july, it is still going on right? since it is the 1st? I worry about these sorts of things= showing up and it not being the right thing.

Frost is a divine gelato place that dropped from the heavens to Tucson in a couple locations - i imagine you're not going to the one on Oracle & Ina.... I know I've seen others but I can't remember where. Anyway, tonight's out for me (although I'm in the mood to eat gelato anytime) - guests are coming over.
My niece will be visiting this week and she loves to swim - we could probably bring her to the Edith Ball and meet you there sometime, but I'll wait till she gets in to see what the agenda is - she's been to Tucson before so she's seen many of the sights already, but she may want to revisit something or the other.

Husband not so interested in friday night bbq, but it would probably be rained out anyway, getting difficult to coordinate niece activities into it all.... But I REALLY REALLY REALLY look fwd to seeing you all again. Soon, very soon, we will be HOT HOT HOT and VERY DRY again. I'll try to enjoy the monsoonness, humidity and all.

lol, everything went well. I started having contractions at about 3 and went into active labor a couple hours later. Long enough to go get my husband from work and bring him home with me! I didn't really progress much until my water broke a few hours later and then it was almost like one constant contraction. It was very intense and fast after that. It also took some work pushing him out as he had his arm up over his head and then his shoulder got stuck. Lisa told me he's the biggest baby I could have made! Aurin Sebastian was born at 11:47pm on the 5th, weighing 8 lbs. and 20 inches long. :love I am SO glad that's over! It wasn't as enjoyable as my dd's labor but at least it was fast and everything worked out so well. My mil took charge of dd, which was perfect as she didn't even mind not being with us, and she woke back up just in time to see him come out. We lucked out because it was her last day in town. I don't know what we would have done without her!
Anyway, hope to get together again soon. :thumb

ok... so- the chiro appt i was going to schedule for sat am is unavail.
I either have to try for tomorrow at 930/10 or wait until next week.
Its for my 4 month old... so i need to try for tomorrow....
BUT- i will not know for sure until 8 am tomorrow bc the chiro was closed when i called and the chiro didnt have their schedule in front of them. :o

OR- i can make it on saturday.
I dont make this stuff up folks, i swear.

Great meeting you all! We looked at the "diamond" again when we got home and it really isn't one. I compared it to my mom's diamond under a microscope and it has pits and scratches on it and air bubbles in it. I looked on Craigslist and no one lost a diamond. Looked on Tucson Weekly too. I think it is glass. Erik said he'll take it to a jeweler, just to be sure, but it was probably from a kid's jewelery. Oh well...

Oh, when we get together next I want to hear more about your uses of prickly pear syrup. We just made some prickly pear jelly and are going to harvest some more prickly pears tomorrow... it would be cool to use the syrup for other uses, too.

I will have to ask dh if he wants to open the store tomorrow morning so the kids and me can stay longer otherwise, it wouldn't be worth it for us to come since we'd have to leave immediately. We can definitely do something Wednesday without a time restraint.
OliveJewel
09-14-2008, 12:36 PM
I forgot that tomorrow Noah and I go to an arts and crafts class at 10 am. (Just signed up for it last week.) So we wouldn't be able to get to Brandi Fenton until around 11:30! :(
I would love to chat prickly pear! I have to admit, the flavor is a little odd at first, but it grows on you. I harvested prickly pear in San Diego that was creamy green when ripe and it tasted so sweet. Here, the prickly pears that I've found are not that sweet and have a touch of bitterness, but still a complex flavor.
If you ever find a stand of cereus cactus with fruit (http://www.desertagriculture.org/Scan0005-2.jpg) try these fruits (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Cereus_peruvianus_fruit_RJP_01.jpg)! No glochids, and they taste like kiwis!

So this is completely off topic but I had to share. I just had this conversation with a customer at work:
how old is your baby?
5.5 weeks.
that's a perfect age to wean him and just start giving him cow's milk.
that sounds absolutely horrible for him.
no, it's great. That's what my wife did with both our kids.
why would I do that when I make my own milk that's better?
well some people just don't breast feed. Cow's milk has the same stuff in it as formula.
really? hm...
OMG! Seriously?!

Cow's milk! Even my friends who DID wean their babies at that age wouldn't THINK to give them cow's milk! :irked: I think they usually wait til the baby is one-year-old. Oh yeah, I went to UC Davis, big ag college. There was a dairy farm on campus, right next to my dorms. I would go at night to visit the baby cows (taken away from mom and lived in little pens.) They would suck on your hands and loved to be massaged (poor babies). Anyways, I had a friend who worked at the dairy and she told how one of their chores was mixing the formula for the baby cows. I said, "Formula! Why don't you just give them the milk that you're taking out of the moms." She said, "They get dehydrated from it... you have to give them formula." :jaw
Wed, 10 am, Splash Park... got it.

Mildred & Dildred's is presenting "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."
TWO performances.
Friday the 19th the show will begin at 6pm, as usual.
Then, an encore performance Saturday the 20th at 11am. As always, the plays are free and fun for everyone.
Also, there will be a secret sale on each day of the play (the 19th and 20th). Take 15% off anything and everything... if you know the secret password.

I think I'll probably work Tues/Thurs mornings this week, so a Wednesday get together would work for me. Though I could also work Wednesday and play Thursday! I just like to tell my boss on Monday what my schedule for the week will be....
We're having a great weekend! Rob is working, so I've been spending lots of QT with my mom and my kid, it's been quite wonderful. Though I just remembered that today was free admission at the children's museum and I was going to check it out... guess that's not happening.
So I'm up for getting together Wednesday morning! I like Connor park and brandi fenton, and don't have any other suggestions as I'm still the new mom in town.
OliveJewel
09-21-2008, 09:11 PM

Wednesday at Connor sounds good to me! I've been to a couple other parks these last 2 days and now I REALLY appreciate the shade at Connor. What the heck, designers of other parks?
What time Wed. We could probably do around 8 or around 10... give or take depending on naps.
Hannah, the Children's museum is $5 for kids 2-18, and $7 for adults, though they have memberships. Once a month they have a free admission day, so i was planning on going then and checking it out--but I missed it! It looks like the next free admission day is October 4.

Sunflower (East Side) or New Life (Central). Co-op has big selection, but too far for us. And herb store is right next door.
Ok, maybe next week we can do pool. Noah has been really anti-pool the last couple of days anyways because he got shots Monday (his first ones) and he didn't want the band-aids to fall off. Also, since we have a pool, he is reluctant to swim in other pools. I guess it feels weird to him.
About the shots, we got him DTaP(whooping cough, tetanus, and diptheria--which I think is an intestinal bug) and Flu, as a buffer for Micah. Each thigh received a vaccine. Each injection site got red and warm. I think the flu one was a lot worse than the DTaP. It is subsiding today. He WAS kind of calm in demeanor on Tuesday, just wanted to lay around, but no fever. We watched him carefully for adverse reactions. I feel okay about it because we waited this long. When Noah was Micah's age, I was never around other little kids--Noah was much more insulated from viruses. I figure Noah is the biggest vector for our family. Just wanted to share my experience.

Unfortunately, Friday my dad will be using the car again! He is taking an Anatomy class at Pima to see if he likes the medical field. Personally, I think that will not give him an accurate view, but it's his life! He's quirky.
Our ped is extremely understanding. He totally recommends vaccines, but if you decide not to he won't bring it up.
I'm thinking about giving Micah infant cereal, with the added iron. He seems so hungry and he's so big. I'm amazed that my body can do it, but I just have a feeling that it's time and the iron would be good for him. Isn't that silly that it's such a big deal to me? :o

OliveJewel- I think it is so cute that Noah didn't want to get his bandaids wet.
Jen- ok, so I'm totally digging the ring sling. Thanks for letting us borrow it! it sounded at the park like you know a few sling makers. Would you give me the contact info so I can get one of my very own? The ring sling is WAY more comfortable than the other sling, and just easier for the around the house stuff than the Beco. I think it'll really help save my hips and back when Carter is in those "don't-you-dare-put-me-down" moods.

my dh is just like you.
im kind of loving this weather :o especially early in the morning at the park. i have been going like everyday. lol
if we happen to get up super early tomorrow we may head up to sdm, although oktoberfest really does sound quite fun too.... i had forgotten all about it tbh.
i think we are heading to the reptile show this afternoon.
i dont think i can do the pool without dh though. makes me too nervous to having a baby in the sling & k loose. plus i have this previously undisclosed aversion to chemically treated water. :bag:

lol! i knew i liked him. :thumb
i just checked weather.com, and it looks like there might be thunderstorms on mt lemmon tomorrow. :(:(:(:(:(:(:( i get like this with certain things re: baby, but he's been each year of his life so far, and it will break my heart if we dont get to go! :o
i hear you, re: pool. i dont think i could do *anything* sans dh with two kids. :o i got over my chemical pool issues with years of swim team....but i hear that one, too. :eyesroll
mmm. i'm more social in winter, i swear. :D

exactly- and I also tell myself I would rather be able to enjoy early mornings and late nights in the desert summer than weekends maybe for 10 minutes in northern winters...
because goodness knows the snow is only pretty for a minute.:cold:

very true. i almost never miss icy brown slush. and our summer storms are bliss. :treehugger: it's also easier to escape the heat and sun than it is to "escape"/"beat back with a big stick" the gloooooooommmmmmmmm.

I'm up for meeting at the pool next week. DS might not swim because he only wants to swim in our pool. But we'll go once just to see it. He might be tempted.
Have you swam in Sabino Creek? I HIGHLY recommend it--it's therapeutic for me.
We went to the zoo today-- me, my dad, and boys. DH is working the plant sale at ASDM. Zoo wasn't too crowded--there's a lot of happenings this weekend! Loft cinema sounded fun. Do they do stuff like that every Saturday?
Ligeia, hope you're having fun; we'll see you tomorrow!

I couldn't agree more-on all the above!
I also don't do well in this heat...would LOVE some :cold: too!!
It was SOOO hot :( at the Get Fit fest. DS had a blast though.
I usually hibernate ALL summer too...but with DS and me +baby cooped up together well, just HAD to get him out-for ALL of our sanity!!:wink
DH and I are actually "trying" to figure a way to move out of state because we are increasingly HATING the heat more and more every year. DH is a Chef and says he feels like he is "baking" from the inside :lol
We're thinking Oregon, or Minnesota (my home state) I know:cold::cold: we'll see.

It was a blast! Cute movie
No they don't :( In the summer they did. We never made it though:irked:
After a rest we are going to the concert at Reid Park tonight. Anyone going?
OOPS! its UDALL park 7pm

I LOVE scarves. :) I wish I had way more of them because they are just so much fun. At least if it has to be cold, it makes up for it a little by getting to wear a festive scarf. :p
Yeah, I'll be happy on Monday when all the show mayhem is done! Hope to see someone there tomorrow since we can't really do anything else this weekend. We just got the keys to our house today!! As soon as everything is put together and we're done with the craziness, we can have a get together at our new house if everyone would like. Thought it would be nice since you were talking about not wanting to visit a public pool. It has a pool and we will only be using the bare minimum of crap to keep it clean so it won't be gross.
Should we do another park get together next week then? :)

indeed i did- but jared wants nothing to do with any african tortoise.... :eyesroll
*apparently* his mom (who passed away and left us this house) had a thing for sonoran desert tortoises and they had a very lively one that would open the screen door and come inside... when she passed away dh was in boot camp and they gave her tortise away to a rescue? so now that i want a tortise he wants to seek out hos long lost tortoise.
:eyesroll
i want one that will be a huge hundred pounder.
i want a freaking tortise NOW!
:lol
i sound crazy- but i fell in L O V E
ive never seen a tortoise up close... i wanted to snuggle :)
