Old Thread (http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=924491)
Have a I ever mentioned that Nico goes to sleep when he hears my alarm clock? And is frequently awake for at least a full hour before? :dizzy: Apparently, he does this in August as well.
Happy August. Mmmm, what is that? The faintest little whiff of Halloween. :joy:

ugh Mad was up and down last night, going pee (okay it's a good thing she wakes to go pee instead of sleeping though it), but then she wanted to play, stood at the top of the stairs crying for me, which woke me and I told her it was time to sleep. She wanted to watch cartoons and I said that it wasn't cartoon time. I fell back asleep, woke up to her needing to put her pjs back on. Noticed that the light was on in her room. :eyesroll I don't know how Carson slept through it.

Happy August! Jake woke up at 6am wanting to celebrate August :eyesroll I think it has something to do with him going to bed at 7:30 last night.
Lee.. how big is your parents house? $4,000 would be doable probably.. but much more than that.. not so much.
Their second home is about 1600 sq feet.

Yah, I kind of wonder if Nico wouldn't be waking up, and I mean wide awaking, at 3am if he wasn't going to sleep at 7. They seem to be related... but I so like the early bedtime! What to do...

My house is bigger than that so I am sure it would be more expensive than that.
So any idea's how to keep a 21 month old from playing with the plugs? He pulls the outlet covers out, he unplugs and plugs back in anything that is plugged in. None of my children have been as fascinated with outlets as him.
Yeay!! It's almost fall!!
OH yea I have another question I wanted to ask last night.. but I was tired and forgot.
I made jam for the first time. :D I am pretty sure it turned out good. Jars are sealed... it looks like it set... but the directions say to remove the bands and store in a cool dark place. Why would you remove the bands? Once you open it, how do you re-close it if you remove the bands? I am confused. :scratch

If they sealed correctly then taking off the bands (NOT the lids) will not affect what you have in them. If they didn't seal correctly then what is in them will get gross whether or not you take off the bands :wink
FWIW I never take the bands off what I can.
Oh, happy August!

Chase does this too. We bought some outlet plug covers that fit over the plugged-in cords and prevent him pulling them out. In other places, we've put furniture (couch, bookcases) in front of the outlet.

:scratch I've never heard this advice. Nor have I ever done this when making jam. But the lid part is what seals the jar, so you don't really NEED the bands until you break the seal. Then the band holds the lid on. :shrug

i had like NO sleep last night. between Niamh staying up til 3. then slightly drifiting off, then Addy waking for water, a BAJILLION freaking times, (ok maybe she does drink too much water) and Morgan getting up for work at 5:15, then Addy being up, and wanting to conversate.
i am exhausted. i really feel a lil loopy.
hopefully my mom can chill with Addy later while Niamh and i nap.
i too smell candycorn and pumpkinseeds. :joy:

And yes. VERY tired this morning. Thought I had enough flour to make bagels, discovered I don't... before I got dressed, so I have this VERY wet dough proofing in the oven... Guess I'm going to the damn store in my jammies.
I'm smelling pumpkin pie this morning. Mmmm...
Would there be any interest in a HFCS free halloween celebration? I'm thinking of doing one this year.

Hi everyone! I guess I better introduce myself before the thread gets far too large and intimidating! I'm Nicole and have been lurking on MDC for years. I've been in and out of PDX over the past two years for a PhD program over at PSU. Luckily, DH found a job in PDX for this coming year, so we are all going to be there together starting August 20th! Hurray! Oh, and "we" includes myself, DH, and our 8 month old son, Martin and a cat named PITA.
We live off of Belmont and SE 39th. Part of the reason why I'm introducing myself is I know that baby needs more interaction with children and I wouldn't mind more with like minded mamas. So, I'm going to try and keep up with this thread and see if we can't come out to one of the play/park dates in late August.
I also am thinking that I need some mornings during the week to work on some research (seeing as that is the reason we are in PDX... well that and people are wonderful there!). So, if anyone is interested in doing some sort of pre-Preschool (I'm thinking 9-24 months of age in September) childcare swap/coop in close-in PDX, I'm all ears.
Finally, I'm trying to learn how to knit. If anyone wants to be my knitting tutor (really, just show me how to finish shorties and longies... I have the basics down), that would be great. I'm an excellent seamstress, so perhaps I could provide some hints there in return.
Alright. That is enough for now. Looking forward to getting to know you all better!

A few of us gather most Wednesday nights at Abundant Yarn on SE 13th (http://www.abundantyarn.com/), sans kids. Anytime you want to come meet us, I'm sure one of us could teach you how to finish. What pattern are you using? Abundant also has a Mom & Kid knitting on Friday mornings, but I can never make it due to Chase's nap time. And I would personally love some tips - or maybe just motivation? - to finish my half-done sewing projects! :D

I called a fireplace store and you can definably convert a gas fireplace "space" to a rear venting pellet stove.. so I think that is the route we are going to take. I found one online that also burns corn or cherry pits. :thumb While I don't see much use for that at the moment, the option to covert to something else may be useful in the future. :D

One thing I wanted to mention with the pellet stove is that there are different companies that make pellets and the pellets are not equal. brand a might work great in joe's stove but not work well in yours.(so don't go out buying a ton of pellets the first time out. buy a bag or two of each kind so see which burn at a steady pace in the stove you pick out). Also, was it last year or the year before there was a shortage in pellets. And some of the pellets that could only be found were for animal bedding.
Also you'll want to get one that has a programmable thermostat and a push button start or they're a PITA to try and start with the fluid stuff.
When we bought our from Gordon's on Broadway. Back in 2001 they were the cheapest and I didn't feel pressure from them when we first went in and said that we were just looking.

Oh yeah, we lived in a rancher that had ceiling heat when I was a teenager. I HATED it. So very, very, inefficient, since heat rises.
Our apartment in Eugene had ceiling heat too, but it was a two story townhouse. We figured out that it was more efficient to turn the heat on for the downstairs room than upstairs, since the heat would come up through the floor.

Wah. All the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli DVDs are on sale at Amazon, and I can't spend any money. I want them all. Wah.
I am so flipping POed I could scream.
Dh is extending our driveway and poured cement to do so last weekend. He also wants to our a pad further up to store the garbage cans on ect.
Well the cement was delivered on the 14th. On the 18th he went to the hospital and was unable to work on it. So last weekend, against the judgment of his doctor he hired some of the neighbors to work on the driveway and got that part poured. He still has a pallet a half of cement tarped in the driveway along with the empty pallets.
So I get a visit from the code enforcement officer that they have complaint about construction debris stored in our yard. He can see there is on going work but code says you have 14 days only to store it. (14 days starting from when he first saw it.) He also said he will work with you if he sees it is diminishing due to work and not just being stored there indefinably. But he has a question about the grade of the driveway and has called the building inspector in to look at it. :irked: So now this halts work until he looks at it. Not to mention they aren't done and were going put river rocks between the slap we poured and the neighbors retaining wall to keep water from flowing into his yard. :irked:
I called and left him a msg. I hope he calls today so DH can work on this over the weekend.
On another note.. while I have no proof at all.. since they also gave notices to my other neighbors, I believe VERY VERY VERY strongly that it was the new real estate agent of the people across the street. They have been trying to sell their house since September and have nothing. The sign changed to new company on Monday and now this? Yea it's really the fault of the tarped cement that has been in our driveway since July 14th that their house hasn't sold since September.
I even made DH go out and make sure the yard was clean last time they had an open house. :irked:

We're usually there by 7pm. They close at 9pm, and serve beer & wine :drink So it makes a nice simple kind of moms-night-out.
Oh yeah, we lived in a rancher that had ceiling heat when I was a teenager. I HATED it. So very, very, inefficient, since heat rises.
We aren't crazy about our ceiling heat, but I do kind of understand the concept - it's supposed to work just like heat from the sun, by warming up the THINGS in the room, which in turn warm the air. We got advice from my dad's friend to only turn the heat on when you were going to be in the room, and to close all doors. It works TOO good in Chase's room, the smallest room in the house, and not so great elsewhere. The one great thing about it is it is SILENT. Still, I'd much rather have radiant floor heat, like Lee; it's so much nicer to have toasty tootsies and a cool head than the other way around!

Can I vent for a moment? (I know I can!) My DS HATES his daycare. He wakes up half the time saying "don't want to go see friends!" And I know he's getting older and is bound to have more bumps and scrapes, but this last week he came home with huge scrapes on both knees, little ones on his back and one on his foot from where they let him wear shoes with no socks BECAUSE HE WANTED TO! hello? he's three. he also wants to jump out of our window four flights up because he thinks it will be a "really big jump". Why is a three year old making these decisions?
So the kicker is that this daycare is new and is only for the summer until his regular daycare opens in the fall. I really can't think of (or afford) any alternatives, but the whole situation makes me nervous and unhappy.

bad day care really sucks, i have been there. and it's so hard on them to change out of that, too, it sticks with them. my preschool does let them choose to not wear shoes- then they learn Why and what happens, make their own consequences. we do get bump reports, tho, if it's that many things, there should be a report.

Congrats Eliza!!!!
Welcome Nicole! that was weird, another Nicole! :D
Queston!!! My MIL has graciously offered to shampoo the carpet before Baby makes her appearance...I NEED suggestions on a good somewhat more natural carpet cleaner that doesn't cost a fortune.
I will be making plans to be out of the house, but would like to offer a suggestion about what to use to clean the floor other than degreaser. Sigh!
I survived the floor being replaced yesterday. ALL DAY! I have to be away when she's cleaning though...Sigh again...
Thanks for your help ladies!

Oh Nicole, I'm SO glad you got that taken care of beforehand, than having to deal with that post-partum.
My father in law came to visit a week and a half after Ruby was born, and decided that that would be the PERFECT time to gut and rebuild our shower downstairs, which is where the nice bathtub is, so I had to take all of my sitz baths upstairs in the HOT, non-insulated upstairs bathroom during a nasty heat wave. I'm still upset about that. :lol

Nichole I use Simple Green. I got it at Fred Myer with the other carpet cleaning solutions. It does need diluted though.

I'm starting to wonder, although I haven't tested yet. But the lack of milk and the not picking up in that arena does make me wonder. I also have been HUNGRY lately.
But stranger coincidences have occurred in the past, so I'm giving it a little bit of time. But if things are still weird this time next week, I guess I'll test.

Hi, I'm Carrie, I live in Vancouver, and I thought I should try to brave the Big Thread this month. I don't have a computer at home, so posts from me will probably be erratic. I'm stealing some internet time at the in-laws' house right now while the little one plays outside w/ them. :lol
Y'all have probably met me if you've been into Milagros on a weekend lately -- I work there Fridays through Mondays. I have a 2 year old son and a husband (and a dog and cat).
:fingersx: Good luck Eliza!!
So any idea's how to keep a 21 month old from playing with the plugs? He pulls the outlet covers out, he unplugs and plugs back in anything that is plugged in. None of my children have been as fascinated with outlets as him.
We use tape -- lots of masking tape. And furniture. And onestepahead.com has some nifty plug protectors for things that are plugged in that I was going to get, but luckily (knock on wood) the kiddo seems to be leaving things alone for the time being.
Would there be any interest in a HFCS free halloween celebration? I'm thinking of doing one this year.
Yes, yes, YES! Please. I loathe HFCS. My son reacts to it SO strongly. It's like giving him crack. I can only imagine what it does to his poor body. I'd love to have a get together where he could actually have fun w/out me having to police every bite he takes. Although he does have to avoid dairy, too...

I haven't used it so I don't know how well it works. The bottle did say that it could be used in a carpet cleaner.

Tonight when Shawn got home from work, he stepped out of his car, and an egg fell out of the sky just missing his head!!!!
It was a regular chicken egg. Not like a . . . . you know, tree nest birdy egg. It must have either fell out of a tree or off the roof. Or maybe someone threw it? I have no idea. It seems like a sign or something.

So Pauline, do you still want to go to the Farmer's market tomorrow morning?
Oh Hedy I forgot to tell you. It's not happening at the High School as per usual. Tommorow, on Sandy, approximately between my house and yours, is The First Annual Parkrose Cruise In And Neighborhood Festival
Havn't you seen all the banners? :wink
The police will be out on Sandy in full force to discourage the um, "usual foot traffic" and there will be, well, some sort of festivities involving Classic Cars and the local businesses. Should be intersting.
And that's where the Farmer's market is going to be.
I think we are all going (Shawn's off work) to look at the cars (Shawn and Sophia love cars) and I guess just see what's the hubbub is all about.
Let's go to the regular farmer's market when we get back, okay?

Maybe I should . . . :scratch I could keep it in the laundry room. It would never be found there.
No one ever talks about this sucky part about being partner with someone who is trying not to drink. That you can't drink either. Oh well, I'll drink with my parents next week.
Oh I know. I don't think that is always the case, but it sure seems prudent in yours. :( Uh, that said... if we have our date, you'd have a long bus ride home to off gas a drink or two. :) I'm just sayin...

There's that cruise in and farmer's market on Sandy up by me. Do you know what a crusie in is? It's where all these folks that have classic cars that are all souped up drive somewhere and park and you can walk around and check out their cars. It's actually more fun than it sounds. It's kind of far for you to bike maybe but Nico might like to see the cars. Sophia loves them. Of course you can't touch them. I guess there are some other festivities going on but I can't say what exactly.
Anyway, if you came out here, you would be welcome to park your bike at our house.

Chase still gets up at 6:30. Every. Day. Goes to be at 8pm, too. The best news, though, is that he sleeps fairly solid from 8pm to 4am or a little later :bigeyes Some nights he wakes (me up) once or twice, but goes back to sleep easily with a little repositioning and cuddles. :love
There is a cruise-in today in Milwaukie, too. (http://www.northwestclassicautomall.com/events.ihtml?step=2&eid=2700) Near the bowling alley, across from Mike's Drive-in. We wandered down last year because the music was so loud!

It's "might" because of crowds and exhaustion, plus I have to go to the library and farmer's market, but yeah, I'm 100% certain that Sprogly would love it. You should see all the paper airplanes in my house, it's an obsession. Joi's MNM made several really cool paper airplanes for Sprogly last week, and he takes great care of them, and takes them back and forth to daycare. We are to look for a book about paper airplanes at the library today. Which reminds me, I'd better look in the catalog before we go so I know where to look.
Which stretch of road are you talking about? There's no alternate route?

I know what a cruise in is. I grew up in the town next to Graffiti Night. You know, where the actually movie was filmed? And they still had it .. every .. single.. year.. until it was banned in '92. :(
I wonder if they have reinstated it yet. Graffiti Night is basically the same thing as Hot August Nights in Reno. Which.. I think should be this weekend. I wonder if that is why everyone else is having a "cruise in."

Going east on the hawthorne bridge. Dealing with the cars merging onto and off of that bridge going eastbound is truly awful. I could get off at the OMSI exit instead of going down hawthorne, but after omsi the roads aren't kid friendly until clinton. There's all this great riding space in portland, but it's segmented into little bike friendly islands. What's it called when animals lose their habitat and aren't able to migrate because of mass freeways cutting through their normal path? That's how I feel about biking in portland. And by myself, no problem. With the love of my life on the backseat... not so easy.

I understand. Could you throw the bike on the bus to go over the river?
Gods willing, I'll be making a bike commute from that general direction, so I'll have to learn the ropes myself.
Man Alex just feel off the bed and he was holding his arm funny for a few minutes. I got scared cause our old insurance expired yesterday and the new insurance kicks in "I think" on Monday. (Something about the first fill day of his 2nd full pay period.)

The google group isn't even relevant to the calender anyway. The only connection was that I sent out an invite to the people on the google group as a way of reaching the most people with one address. I suppose I could do the same with the yahoo group, but as it turns out I have to add people individually anyway, so just pm or email me your address and I can add you.
Or, if a person is on the google group they can check the posts and there will be a link there.

Sophia and I took a nice nap together. I was feeling pretty unappreciated this morning so I verbalized my feelings to Shawn and now I have some chocolate bars. I do like chocolate bars.

Good for you!
Ugh. Ru now has a bit of a snaggletooth. It's not horrible and doesn't seem to be bothering her at all. I only noticed it when she smiled at me earlier. Apparently she fell on the patio while everyone was outside this morning, and I was in the shower.
Dentist? Hm. I have a chipped tooth that got that way when I was 7, and I never did anything to it. It's still totally fine. Never had any problems with it.

Today at the farmer's market Sprogly couldn't catch a break. First we thought we were getting in line for popcorn, but it turned out there was a long line going the other way (I really didn't see it) and people made it obvious that they would have been disgruntled, so even though we'd waited, we left. Then Sprogly had to go to the bathroom, and when he turned to say something to me right before it was his turn, a woman walked right in front of him into the stall. Who cuts in line in front of a child doing the pee pee dance, anyway? Then again, when he wanted lemonade, and I gave him the money and he waited in line, and someone who was right behind him ordered the last lemonades, right over his head. I said something, but the guy just scowled at us and walked off. The only other thing they had left was iced tea. The girl behind the counter was only a high-schooler, otherwise she'd have had a brand new asshole, because I swear she looked right at Sprogly before giving the lemonades to the guy.
He really likes getting in line and ordering by himself, but I guess I have to teach him to assert himself, because people don't even see him. We went back to the popcorn place, and this time I told him to remember who he was behind in line, and don't let anyone get ahead of him, just to say excuse me if they do. So he did fine.
We got a book about how to make origami airplanes. How exciting. I love the library.:)

Bre chiped a tooth when she was about 2ish. She fell in the bath and hit it on the faucet. :( It is one of the teeth that need work now so I don't know if has to do with the chipping or just cause it's one of her front teeth. I never did have any work done (remember that $3,000 quote and his refusal to do only what needed immediate attention?) So I don't know. We didn't have dental insurance at the time it happened and I didn't think it was a big deal... but now I wonder if it had anything to do with that tooth going downhill.
Anyone have a good dentist on the Eastside? I will NEVER go back to Gental Dental again.

Ugh, you might want to get her teeth checked. The fact that it chipped could mean that she hit it really hard, but it could also mean that it was weakened from a pre-existing condition that you'd want to know about. You might also get it checked because it can be chipped to the root (the roots run very close to the tips of the teeth in baby teeth) and you might not know it. If she's like Nico, she might just go about her day in pain and not let you know. If you took her to Pike then I can assure you he wouldn't try to cap it or crown it or do anything unnecessary unless there was a real problem.
That said, check for looseness - some is normal, it should improve in a few weeks; a lot of wiggle would be worrisome. Or it may turn gray or darken - which means the tooth is bleeding internally. That can either go away, or not. If not, then there's a chance it would need to be treated as well as a chance that it would be just fine. HTH, poor Ru. :hug

OH! I bought Nico a new helmet while I was at my bike shop. It was priced at $40, but my awesome mechanic gave it to me for $25. And he was able to put it on a wiggly, no-nap Nico without an incident. :thumb Nico has been wearing this helmet for 4 hours and counting. :love
Oops, spoke to soon. Now we're practicing putting it on and off. Also, he has some truly spectacular hippy hair today. :love

I would go to the dentist. Talula's chipped tooth was one of the first signs of decay, and if I had gone in much earlier, I think her teeth would be a lot better off now.
I think I figured out why I was confused about the calendar. I still can't open it, but I was looking in the Yahoo group and now have figured out it's teh googlez.
We had a lovely day. We went out to breakfast at our town's amazing bar/diner. Then we went to the Antique Mall, which is more radness than you can wrap your brain around. Joey got some nerdy stereo stuff that I don't understand and I got a green vintage purse. Then we went to the park and didn't even see any shirtless mulleted dads drinking Miller cans and cursing at their kids and threatening to "whip" their "ass red."

Thanks! I'll check it out more thoroughly. It seems to just be the bottom left corner of her left incisor, and she did land on the cement patio, so I would think that's probably what did it. I don't see any discoloration.'

I just had to close the window to this room because the smell of dog shit emanating from our neighbor's 5'X5' dog pen which is RIGHTOUTSIDE is overpowering. It was so bad I thought Ruby was sick and had a really nasty diaper. Her diaper is dry.
What can be done about this? It's seriously disgusting and making me want to puke.

So if Nico is going to sleep around 7 and waking up at 3 or 4 ready to go, that's 8-9 hours. I wonder if I cut out his naps too early. A kid can't get by on 8-9 hours, right? That's way too little sleep. But maybe he just can't stay in bed for 10-12 hours at a time.... Ugh. I think that's the root problem here. He needs a nap, and thusly, to stay up a bit later than 8. I think I'll at least try it and see if it makes a dramatic change like I think it should.

I don't know, Hedy. I can't think of anything at all. I know you've been worried about that dog.
