Hi Mamas,

I hope you don't mind me stopping by after a long absence to start your August thread and let you know about Tacoma's World Breastfeeding Week Celebration, next Thursday. I'll be stuck at the market, but I encourage everybody to go. (Stop by the market and say hi afterward if you like, it's kids day!)

Hillary Ryan of Wai Baby just sent me this press release:

Tacoma Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

Mass Nurse-Out In the Park Scheduled

Tacoma, WA- Breastfeeding babies, their families and the community that supports them will gather on Thursday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wright Park to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7. The celebration will feature a mass nurse out at 11 am to set the record for the largest number of simultaneous breastfeeding babies in Tacoma, as well as remarks by local lactation consultant- Debbie Knox, IBCLC. Gift bags will be provided to the first 50 families.

La Leche League’s 2008 World Breastfeeding Week celebrations recognize the importance of supporting mothers so they can achieve the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.

La Leche League advocates creating optimal conditions for mothers in several critical areas of support, including family and social networks, healthcare, workplace and employment, government and legislation, and crisis or emergency response.

Tacoma’s celebration is co-produced by two locally-owned, mom-run stores: Wai Baby (owned by Hillary Ryan) and Best Loved Baby (owned by Sarah Simmons, Bronwyn Judd and Ida Simmons). Representatives from many other local organizations will be present including The Birthing Inn, Tacoma Labor Companions, North Tacoma La Leche League, Bates Technical College and more.

I got an email about that this morning and was coming here to ask if anyone else was going and if so, would you like to meet up? I plan to go, but I don't want to be a loner! :p

BTW, what market are you referring to?

Oh sorry, the Broadway farmers' market downtown. I have a booth there, with bubbles and play dough and chalk for the kids on a nice grassy area by the stage. It's on Broadway, between S 9th and S 11th, across from the Children's Museum, which is free every Thursday through August.

Okay, haven't been to that one yet (just moved here in June) but I want to go.

Man, I won't be able to make it. DH comes home on block leave that day. Plus, I still live on the eastside.

I won't be able to make it either, but that does sound like fun.

Barbara, how is your DH doing?

I have a feeling that we will be leaving the Tacoma Area for a while. My 'goal' is to stay through August, but then I am probably going to pack up and drag the kids to my parents. We are not going to try and rent our place here or anything so we will technically still live in Tacoma. But the past few weeks have just been seriously trying, so to not end-up as a CPS case I think we need to move.

But at least once a month I will be in the Tacoma/Puyallup/Camp Murray area so maybe We might be able to meet up sometime.

jenyum - my DD loves all your stuff at the farmers market even though I don't think I have ever introduced myself to you, I didn't really realize that you posted here, even though in some thread way long ago it was mentioned that the tacomamama site was ran by a MDC mom. I just want to say THANK YOU for that site. The calendar on it has saved my sanity more then once.

Alohamelly - did you know that a Ft. Lewis moms group was recently started on meet-up.com? I know one of the organizers. Might want to check that out if you have not already.

He is doing good. He is no longer on profile, just in time to start packing things up and go home :lol He was already trained on most of the things they were doing at AT anyway because of his job at Ft. Lewis.

I am not a Mom yet but, I am pretty AP. We are hoping once this deployment ends that DH gets his job at Ft. Lewis again. He's National Guard regularly.

Next year. He is AT now and goes to MOB on the 18th.

I'll be moving to Auburn the first week of September, so we could always try to meet a bit after that...if you'd like.

I am really mad at the Army today. DH called and said he would be home today, that was at 10am. Then, he calls and says, we aren't leaving until tonight, that was at 11:30am. By 1pm, he calls and says "sorry babe, can't leave until tomorrow."

I hate having my hopes crushed like that. Especially during my fertile time and we are STILL TTC.

My sister and I picked him up yesterday. He at the Armory now, cleaning cause after the deployment they might be going to a different Armory, in eastern washington this time.

We are heading out on Sunday to go camping and I am so excited!

So we put our house on the market yesterday. When it sells, we're moving to Tacoma and I'll really be a Tacoma Mama. :)

Hello all, I've been MIA as I constantly forget to subscribe to the new thread.

I am starting an attachment parenting meetup this wednesday the 20th of August.. I really miss having frequent face to face contact with other ap parents so I'm hoping this will get the ball rolling. I plan on holding this every wednesday morning for a few months and seeing how it goes.

You can find it on meetup.com by searching for attachment parenting in tacoma

I will hold the first meetup at my house from 9am to 11am. PM for more info or go to meetup.com.

I know I've only met a few of you, but I'd love to meet more!

Kids and parents welcome and bring an ap friend if you want.

Hi everyone! Just stopping in to put out an offer! I've recently gotten into photography, and I would love to have some practice shoots with you and your families/children :joy: I'm in the Puyallup area, but don't mind driving 20-30 mins to meet at a park, or some other location.

For some examples of what I've been doing, see the link in my sig for the photography blog.

Would be really cool to get the chance to meet some of you. PM me if you're interested and we can work out details. :thumb

Hey all, I am still here. Just two more days until my DH deploys. I had to change my username, for security reasons.

My nephew's 3rd birthday was today. We spent most of the day up at my parents in the blistering heat and are now at home in the living room in front of the a/c.

Only a couple of more weeks until I move. I am so excited to be a south sounder again.

Awww man, I won't be able to make it. That is likely to be the 'last day' for MC to play with Daddy. They put it on the 'Tacoma Mama's Meet-up' as well though, just so you know.

My Mom and I dropped Hubby off at 4 am to Ft. Lewis. I am still catching up on sleep since we didn't go to bed the night before the drop off.

I am going to start packing up stuff starting tomorrow. I am still too tired to do it today. Plus, I hate packing and the longer I can hold off the better lol.

Hi girls! I'm in Puyallup too. I was on here about a 1 1/2s year ago and my profile got lost, so I'm starting over.

BellaLuna, good luck on the move. All I know is every time I move, I swear I'm never gonna stockpile crud again, and I'm never moving again. lol

Aud- excited about the AP group! I have wanted to go to the other AP group, but it's waaay up in Redmond and just can't justify the drive. :( Looking forward to meeting you soon and talking babies.

Miranda, I've been reading your blog for awhile and had NO CLUE you were in Puyallup. Congrats on your little stair climber! :D Wanna get together at the swings in front of the Puyallup Library?

Aloha - wanna get together?

Jenyum - my DD loves your place at the market too. Must make a point of saying hi sometime. I get shy when I'm out and about tho. :)
We should schedule a time to get together and meet local mamas! :joy:

Are you looking for a ped? If so Fir Creek Pediatrics (http://www.fircreekpediatrics.com/index.html) in University Place is HIGHLY recommended. When I have littles, I plan on going there.

I move soon! I started packing some stuff yesterday. I started with DH's clothes though *sigh* that is always a hard thing to do. I think I will pack up DVDs but not seal the box. Might start packing up my kitchen stuffs too.

I am so nervous and excited to move back to the south sound. I don't know the area very well. DH made me promise to learn a bunch of different ways to get places and to work on my fears of freeway driving. :lol

Ooooh no, I'm almost positive Tricare won't cover any of that or naturopaths.

BellaLuna Rayne
08-20-2008, 08:06 PM
I am on Tricare too and I pay outta pocket. Molly charges me $80/visit, which is less than she was charging me at her old clinic.

I was recommended Barbara Staab, ARNP by someone on here. She's covered by Tricare.

We had an appointment there last week and it was great. I plan to keep going back.

I was looking for Family Medicine since I want to be seen as well. I'll keep that one in mind, though.

I am also looking for a Family Medicine doc which is why I was coming to this thread tonight. I really need a doctor for myself since the kids are covered. We went to the Tricare office in Madigan last week and I found out that we automatically get assigned docs at the hospital on post unless we opt out by signing a waiver. Then, if there's a doctor you want to see, as long as they're in network, you can see them. Just put their name on your waiver. No need to transfer to standard or anything. Therefore, I need a doc for myself! Right now I'm assigned to the internal medicine clinic cause that's the only dept taking new patients.

I have another question! I have a lot of things I'd like to part with. Things such as bedding, towels, pots and pans, dishes. Where is a good place to donate these items to?

DancingOtter
08-21-2008, 06:40 PM
We've been using freecycle.

I decided to go with the Fir Creek Peds for the kiddos. I saw the doc I was assigned at Madigan today and really like him a lot, so I think I'll stick with him for now and just take the kids off post.

BellaLuna Rayne
08-22-2008, 01:51 PM
Goodwill is another place to donate to or Value Village takes donations.

I had to pick another random doc to get back on Prime, stupid Army kicked me off. I'll just change my PCM once I move. I enrolled online so that may be why they didn't have the PCM I was thinking about. Even though I go to the Naturopath, its nice to have an allopathic doc as back up.

I am still plugging away at the packing, kinda hard to do when ya live with other people who keep using your stuff.

Freecyle ... eh. I did join the Lakewood Freecycle last week and I may offer some of my items there but when we were in NC, I frequently had no shows or people picking through and taking what they wanted and it turned me off the whole Freecycle thing. I just want this stuff gone. I was hoping someone would know of a DV shelter or another place like that where I could take this stuff. It's not junky at all.

BellaLuna Rayne
08-25-2008, 01:50 PM
Isn't there a place like that on Lewis? Fisher house...I think.

I go to sign my lease on Friday and I am hoping to move in to my new place this weekend. I may have to beg, cause I know she wanted to make sure it was really clean. I need to get out of this house ASAP. My sister and her friends keep breaking all of my stuff and I don't have the money to replace it. *sigh*

It will be so nice to get outta this place.

This article (Http://www.thenewstribune.com/308/v-lite/story/183555.html) was in the paper awhile back about Tacoma Housing Authority seeking donations for foster kids setting up their first apartments.

I'm so bummed. I live just outside of downtown, in a fabulous condo with a fabulous landlady. She's the best and this place is great. We anticipated settling in for a few years here while figuring out "what next".

She called us yesterday to tell us that they are working towards buying some huge dream home, and will have to sell all their properties, so if we wanted first crack at buying the condo we could. Well that owuld be great, in a year, once credit is figured out and all. And she's asking about 150K over what 3 condos in the building just went for. She's nuts. There's no way.

She says that if they put it on the market she'll tell them that the tenants would be happy being here for a few years, but come on, what buyer is going to do that? And even if they did, the landlord wouldn't be our fave lady!

So we'll likely have to move at the end of the lease (she said they won't do anything until close to lease end). Again. That makes a move here this May, a move to the old apt (across the street) May of '07, in May of '06 we moved into the landlady's townhouse (awful place but brand new so she didn't know), and before that we were almost 3 years in a horrid apartment (landlady was the manager of the complex), before that we were a year in BIL's condo. Moving is expensive, stressful, and my son really hates it. But there's no way we can afford to buy this place. Renting was just fine.

Dangit.
