hi! we are also concidering moving up to Alaska. I would appreciate any cost of living info, or if anyone knows anything about the land parcels the government sells. here is a link

http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/mlw/landsale/otc/subdiv_sc.cfm#area5

I have no idea about locations, but someone here mentioned they were from Palmer? somewhere within an hour or 2 drive from anchorage may be good.

There are some interesting looking parcels, of course there are no photos, but the prices and map locations have caught my eye. alot on area 1. we were thinking living near a river, maybe not the ocean or large body of water.

money would be a big factor. getting a government parcel wouldnt be realistic because of development costs, maybe not for awhile. we are pretty low income, but are more concerned with land so would live in a shack if it provided shelter and warmth.

the weather seems relatively do-able. we are in cleveland, ohio now, and it hovers around 10-20 in winter, but with wind chill goes around 0, or below.

I have so many random questions, i know. i dont even know where to start to get info.....?

my dh is an independent tradesman, so a proffesional job transfer wouldnt happen, we would have to start fresh there.

I'm from Alaska! I don't live there now, but I go back to visit family.

Palmer is a nice area. I lived on Kodiak Island (don't move there...) and I would travel for sports. We would go to all the cities under Anchorage. Palmer, Wasilla, Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Seward. My favorite city is Homer. It's quite far from Anchorage, but it is AWESOME there!! It's on the ocean, and it's beautiful. Lots of glaciers to look at, fishing to do. Homer is a great town. If my memory serves me correctly, the drive to Anchorage is about 4 to 5 hours.

Have fun deciding!

Homer is about 4 hours So. of Anch. The whole Kenai peninsula is gorgeous!!! Of course, the Mat-Su Valley is also beautiful--this includes the Palmer area. We've looked at a lot of the gov. landsales out there for cabin property. Never found anything perfect. You just really have to look at each piece and weigh the pros & cons. Palmer is about an hour from Anch. 40-50 miles maybe?

Re: jobs, I'd go online and check out what kinds of jobs are avail. A lot of construction work is seasonal.

The weather is fine. A lot drier cold than Ohio, so you'll prob. like it:)

This is the main paper. YOu could prob. google for a little Palmer or MatSu paper w/employment ads.

Good luck!!!!
