What's Annapolis/Baltimore REALLY like?

Hi. I have some questions for those of you who live in this area. I am a lesbian (I have a partner) with a toddler son and another on the way. I consider myself mostly "AP" and love Mothering. And my partner is very into alternative healing and all that. We visited Baltimore and Annapolis last year and fell in love with the area. We have been looking forever for somewhere that we BOTH felt comfortable moving to (We currently live in Chicago area, but want to move). My partner is from Florida but for several reasons we don't want to move there. We like the ocean, and I love the proximity of several big cities and lots of culture.

Soo... Do you think this is a place we might fit in? Any advice? Does anyone know about how liberal it is? We really like the Annapolis area, but we're open at this point. Thanks!

Annapolis is kind of a melting pot of just about everything in the state. I think, mostly from hearsay, that there are active gay groups in the area -- and that they love a sushi bar dowm thataways somewhere.

Baltimore has a few active gay hotspots (I don't know if the Hippo is still in business, or Lambda Rising bookstore).

As far as local gays and children, I don't know.

Central MD, as I define it, is a loose triangle between DC, Baltimore and Annapolis. Most of it is pretty liberal. Southern and Western MD, and the Eastern Shore -- they're not nearly as accepting.

I have been to Annapolis once and loved it. I have been to B-more frequently but I really dont know too much about those areas in regards to what you are asking about.

I will say though that the area of Washington DC called Dupont Circle is very gay/lesbian friendly. I work in Dupont Circle and you will find lots of stores, clubs, bars all that are very gay friendly. You will be able to pick up all kinds of publications (Washington Blade for example) and newsletters geared to gay/lesbians. There is a Lambada Rising bookstore in Dupont Circle as well.
